Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft

This place is heaven to me. The location is great, being by a dollar store, Starbuck’s and across the street is Target. What more do you need? Came here recently for some fabric and ended up walking out with so much more. Everything is pretty easy to find and the employees are quick to help.
I am a craft master now. Thanks Jo-​Ann Fabrics.

I am not at all a huge crafter, but when I have a project, I stop into this Joann. Here’s my list of pros and cons.
Positives:
–The store is huge and has a large stock of items.
–There is a large parking lot.
Negatives:
–Check out and fabric measuring lines are always long, even at odd hours.
–The layout is confusing and the sections are not so obviously marked.
–The staff is sparse. When you do find a staff member, they are neither friendly, nor helpful, nor knowledgable. In fact, they act a bit inconvenienced when you ask a question.
–It is not particularly close to public transit.
The negatives outweigh far outweigh the positives at this Joann!

This has been the worst experience I have ever had for framing. Don’t ever do it here. It took them 2 weeks longer than stated, I had to call to keep asking where it was, the frame is ordered off site and didn’t come in but no one called me to let me know what was going on. I finally got it done and there were SPOTS all over the professional photography I was having framed. Unbelievable. They said they would try to fix it. No call with an update for 2 weeks. Finally called and talked to the manager and she told me that when they tried to fix it, they smeared the photo. Unbelievable. They are obviously not professionals at this. They ruined an art piece I have purchased. I am hoping I can get another one from the artist. They are refunding my cost and I am getting my money back for the framing. Will NEVER have framing done there in the future.

ALWAYS has LONG lines. Not enough assistance in the store either. The assistants that are there are not actually crafty people so its a ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ shot you are going to talk to someone who has no clue.
Good selection of fabric and yarn. The Jewelry making supplies are cheap/​generic and mostly for those wanting to just connect things and be done.

Waited for over 20 mm to check out today. Only one person working the register while the line continued to grow. At least one person walked out. Not a good way to run a business.

i have been coming to this location since March because the other Chicago location seems to be lacking. however, i have NEVER bought fabric here because they are of less quality than a fabric shop. on occasion i *try* to buy drawing/​sketching supplies for my teenage son, BUT they are OVERPRICED. (plus they DO NOT carry high quality items, like the Prismacolors my son loves.)
i.e., i bought a 5 pack of Sharpie fine tip markers (all black). the price for them (without a coupon or discount) was $ 8. go across the street to Target and you can buy them for four dollars and some change.
some items are priced to be more expensive than other stores. if you use a coupon then you will think you are getting a discount. in reality you are paying what another store offers at a cheaper rate.
they do have good deals here and there but it really depends on the time of year you are purchasing and what the fine print on your coupon says.
returns…don’t get me started. if you a return an item with your receipt you should be good. but lose that priceless piece of paper and you are doomed! you will get back what you paid MINUS a 50% discount because they assume you used a coupon when shopping.
as for the store itself, it is clean and usually well stocked. i would like to see a better organization system for the craft books since there are at least three different locations with a variety of books, in no certain order or category, not including the front shelves where the magazines are.

INSANE lines and slow, unhelpful staff! Seriously, don’t go unless you have low blood pressure and a couple of HOURS to spare!

I love crafting and was so excited to have a craft store walking distance from my house. This place is depressing. I wandered around the aisles, and needed help with some cord. There were 2 employees standing behind the counter who seemed downright irritated I dare ask them for assistance.
After that, I decided it’s best to get out of there, and walked to the registers, which were completely deserted, no indication of what register was open. There was a girl at the front with her back to me, on the phone. I stood there for several minutes, so tempted to just give up and walk out when she turned around and said «Yeah.» I said, «Really? Yeah?» and she just looked at me. So I told her I wanted to check out and she halfheartedly did, with her back turned to me the entire time so I couldn’t catch her name tag. She rang up one of my items and gave me the total without being aware that there were other sitting RIGHT NEXT TO IT. Why? Because she wouldn’t even turn around! I could have just walked out with the things unpaid and she wouldn’t have noticed or cared.
Never going back, not even worth it.

I love shopping at this store, always great deals and great supplies, but I have to say I am not impressed with their customer service. Every time I check out at this location, the cashier women are always so rude! I’m always polite and they never smile or ask how you are doing and when you ask any question about your purchases they get an attitude with you. This has happened to me almost every time I go, which is often, and I always leave the store feeling like I did or said something wrong. And it’s always the same two or three women that are so rude. I’m going to look into finding a different craft store or location. They need to train their cashiers to be more friendly.

This place is grim. It’s best if you know what you want and have a plan prior to entering. Stay for more than 20 minutes and you could be dragged down like Artax in the Swamp of Sadness.

Once in a blue moon the craft bug bites (aka insomnia+internets) and I get motivated to make something awesome that will amaze everyone I show and leave me feeling like Martha Stewart.
In *reality* my projects always end up looking like a third-​grader did them. BUT, when I need supplies to create my useless garbage or someone who can answer my annoying questions, JoAnn is simply the best. Their selection of fabrics is extensive, and they always have great sales on other supplies. Their staff is super helpful and they offer a variety of classes which I hope to take advantage of one of these days when I’m ready to step up my game to junior-​high quality swag.

This location is massive, and has basically every crafty thing you could think of.
I’m a big fan of their yarn section, plenty of colors and options to choose from. I like that they have it organized pretty much by brand/​weight/​material, so it’s easy to navigate.
They also have a great selection of home décor, found a few great frames and a really cute birdhouse here. And, of course, they have tons and tons of different fabrics.
They have a lot of great sales. Always check on your phone to see if they have mobile coupons, I did today and I scored a 20% off everything coupon.

If you want to waste hours of your life attempting to get something framed, use Joanns custom frame shop. We checked it out because it was «65% Off». Considering their «regular price» for a simple mat and frame for a 24X37 print was ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS the 65% off price puts them right in the realm of «Over-​priced».
The manager on duty in the department had no idea what mats were available in that size and allowed us to go through the entire process of choosing one, deciding on it and pairing it with a frame before another employee came along and informed us that in fact the mat could not be used on that size art.
«Why not?»
«The computer won’t let us do it.»
«Could you perhaps call the mat company? Isn’t this a custom shop?»
«We don’t know. The computer won’t let us do it.»
So we started over. 2 hours later we finally had a combination that the almightyComputer allowed and left tired and irritated. The manager vanished in the course of this saga, never to return.
Over 2 weeks later I received a call from Joanns saying that their warehouse did not have our selected frame in stock. Our print was still sitting, un-​matted and unframed.
The favored expressions of the employee (who took over for the manager who peaced out without explanation) was «I’m not real sure» to every inquiry.
«Could you ask your manager?»
«She was the one helping before that didn’t know about the computer»
«Ah.»
This place is a great example of corporate America drooling all over any service based industry, tossing under-​trained employees at complex problems, putting ridiculous price-​tags on things only to «mark them down» to uneducated customers. What a terrible store. We had over 20 items to be framed for a business and will gladly pay more elsewhere. I will never go back to this sad dying franchise.

I wish I had Kathleen M with me for this visit!!! Mental note: bring a fabric aficionado and quilting goddess whenever going to a store like this. I somehow got by on my own though!
They have a nice parking lot but they are located on a busy street and have a cramped entrance to the store. I’m used to going to a Joann Fabrics where I am promptly greeted by alacritous employees. This Joann was different. I actually needed an employee this time and there was nobody around.
I started walking around and a guy in blue pants and a police sweatshirt asked if I needed help. I thought he was a fellow customer who was either extra helpful or flirting. He told me he was an employee when I questioned him about it and then he pointed me toward the custom framing department.
Two employees were gathered around one customer when I arrived at the custom framing department. It took them a few minutes to acknowledge me. When I said that I needed help, one of the employees came over but seemed less than interested in assisting me. Her attitude made me not interested in spending lots of money of custom framing. Instead, I found a 50% off frame in a nearby isle.
Next, I went to the fabric section and found tulle 50% off! I couldn’t have been happier! There were several waiting customers for cutting and one of them told me to grab a number. The girl who helped me was cheerful, funny, and helpful! She helped me calculate how much tulle I needed for my project and then got it ready for me. It was great.
The best thing about Joann Fabrics was that everything was inexpensive. Nearly all of my items were 50% off and I was able to use a 60% off coupon for my one full-​priced item. In fact, my 60% off coupon was one that I pulled up on their website on my phone!

The selection is really nice here, and I dig how the place is laid out. They always seem to have cool fabrics that get me motivated to do another project.
If you go in expecting very long lines and poor service, you can get out alive.

I’m never shopping here again.
This store is a complete mess. There was a line 15-​deep with one cashier on staff. There is ALWAYS a long line but this time it was insultingly awful.
The cashier called for help and 10 minutes later the store manager, Joel, slowly sauntered up to the register. Then, after another 10 minutes they called in someone from framing to ring people up as well. At this point there were probably 30 – 40 people in line. Absolutely unacceptable.
Furthermore, they now only give cash back on purchases made with a debit card.
GOODBYE!

So, I really like what they have to offer in the store and their prices, but for the love of God… get more people working at the register! EVERY TIME I go into this place, I mean EVERY SINGLE TIME, it doesn’t matter if it is 9AM on a Tuesday or 5pm on a Saturday, there is a line 20 people long. And it does not move fast. Seriously, hire more people.

I love the fabric here, but to be honest for craft supplies I would much rather be going to Michaels.
This place is full of older employees that seem like they hate their job, it’s sad to know that these type of people still get employeed. No enthusiasm, no smile, just a «next in line». Feels like those awkward movies where everyone is a robot and has no feeling or thought and just walk around with a stank face. This type of environment makes you not ever want to set foot in there again. I’ve purchased fabric about 4 times and the line to even get it cut its ridiculous with only one person cutting, as other employees sit around conversing. Might as well just bring my own pair of scissors and cut my own piece of fabric at the rate they are going.

Big store, huge selection and friendly staff. I asked someone where to find a rather obscure item, and while he couldn’t tell me exactly, he did give me the general vicinity to search.
Check out is a single queue with multiple servers, so moves quickly. I will definitely be back!
