History

Established in 1983.

Robinson’s No. 1 Ribs was created after Charlie Robinson won the Mike Royko Rib Challenge in Chicago, IL. in 1982, beating over 400 other contestants, including the sponsor — Mike Royko.

Due to continuing demand for the «best ribs in town», Robinson’s No. 1 Ribs was incorporated in 1983, and Robinson’s Barbecue Sauce Co. shortly thereafter.

The restaurant is now serving as a sub-​contractor to several major Food Service Management companies, and provides daily lunch service at the University of Illinois — Circle Campus and University of Chicago, and occasional lunch service to several other companies. Additionally, Robinson’s is a fixture at most of Chicago’s annual summer festivals, and many event venues, including Soldier Field, McCormick Place, UIC Pavilion, University of Chicago, and UIC Student Center West.

Business Owner

Charlie Robinson is the President and CEO of Robinson’s #1 Ribs and Robinson’s BBQ Sauce Co.

Charlie is very active in his community, donating to various activities and community organizations, especially churches and schools in needy areas.

He hires many disadvantaged youths, which gives them a chance to earn income, while also learning about the restaurant business and-​more importantly-​gives them a sense of self worth and respect.

Charlie has received numerous awards, including the Nicholas Award in 1983, Augsburger Ribfest winner (1987), National Rib Cookoff in Cleveland, Ohio (1988), Royal International Barbecue Sauce Contest (1990) the Blue Chip Business of the Year Award (1992), and the City of Chicago’s «Certificate of Merit» by Mayor Daley for Taste of Chicago High Sales. He has earned certificates of appreciation from Chicago Public Schools, the Wilbur Wright College Fund, the Deputy Sheriff Recruiting Program, the Salvation Army.
