RobotCity Workshop

I recently attended a birthday party here. Every detail was perfect– kids were engaged and learning about circuit boards and built a robot. Had a wonderful experience!

I came here for the Robot Date night and my boyfriend and I choose two robots to build. One only took ten minutes and the other took about 40 and we were kind of watching Wall E in the background. The staff was super nice but I just can’t justify the price of the ticket and paying an additional 20 or so for each kit (and then was charged extra for the batteries). I wouldn’t recommend this.

review is based on a single visit i made approximately 2 months ago or so. i was in the area and robocity came up on the Unilocal app as i was just browsing for local businesses near by. i like robots and i have a pre teen nephew who has shown me an interest for DYI assembly type of toys.
service was amicable and helpful. i wondered around for a few minutes asking a few questions and checking out their merchandise. i ended up getting a pretty neat robot that walks and when it falls, it gets up and keeps on going, like a boss. pretty cool right? idk, things like this amuse me (f you, dont judge me)
the kid loves it. and to find out they do these other activities, it seems to me like i am missing out on something here. definitely on my things-​to-​do-​in-​chicago list.

My boyfriend and I were visiting from NYC and booked the date night here. It was so much fun and so relaxed. I’d recommend this to anyone. Bring some wine (there’s a liquor store on the corner if you forget!) and a good attitude and you’ll have a blast!
It would be cool if you didn’t have to buy the kits, if it were just included in the price for the night — but really — not a deal breaker. I did one that was $ 16 and my boyfriends was about $ 20. Well worth it.

Me and the bf did the workshop there. we had so much fun. Brought wine and had good times. We watched the movie Short Circuit while we were making our Tamiya Tiger. It was really fun. The cute little robots brought us our wine and popcorn. I really want one of those.
One thing I really liked about them was that they were constantly checking up on us. They actually gave us time time to finish. That’s a good really good point.
I kinda had to sober up because you have to think (not much) to make the tiger. Still not sober as I’m writing this review. Lmao. I guess we didn’t sober up enough and we didn’t finish our Tiger. But hey, there’s always when we get home. Keep up the good work guys.

Incredible place to take your kids. Staff is attentive and knowledgeable. The workshops are very much worth it and scale the difficulty to different ages. A Must visit!

We had our 5-​year old son’s birthday party at Robot City Workshop. It was awesome! I can’t say enough good things about the customer service and staff — Nick and Bill created a fun environment and were patient with seven rowdy boys. The kids loved building their bug robot and playing with the robots in the store. The setting is small, but perfect for an intimate party.
We brought in pizza from Giordano’s, snacks, drinks and a cake. Overall, the logistics were easy and everyone had fun.
If you are looking for a unique kid’s party this is the place. Everyone raved and will definitely return to purchase more robots. Highly recommend this hidden gem.

My girlfriend and I went on the robot date that this place offers on HowAboutWe.
We built a robot while Wall-​E played and drank some wine (the date is BYOB). Then there was robot trivia and we dominated. We got to take home the robot we built and won an additional robot in the trivia. The robots we could build as part of the date package were pretty basic little toys (you can buy more complicated robots).
I’ll definitely be going back to buy robots as presents in the future. It’s a neat little shop.

Well, I stumbled across a recording while I was cleaning an R2 unit I recently purchased (I think it might’ve been stolen). I didn’t know what it was talking about.
My Uncle recommended that I take it to Anchorhead to have the memory erased.
I ignored him, I tend to be a bit of a rebel. I get it from MY FATHER.
I wanted to get this issue fixed fast, like the Kessel run in 12 parsecs fast.
I was beginning to lose hope, but then I had a NEW HOPE.
I could’ve gone across the street to Robot EMPIRE, STRIKES BACK around six months ago have really slowed service and they have an awful policy on RETURN. OF THE JEDI mind trick they’ve tried over there, I dont want to be the one to FORCE the issue.
I think everyone knows how this story ends.

Came for a date night for How About We.
Had an absolutely awesome time, and got a cute robot out of it.
It’s recommended to eat first as the date includes a movie and robot assembly. Also you can byob and that’s something I’d also suggest doing.
A good time was had by all

Robot Date Night. Do it.
Nick was a blast, building robots/​eating popcorn (delivered BY A ROBOT)/watching super cheesy robot movies is a pretty badass way to spend two hours, and as my boyfriend so eloquently asked, «why is everything so reasonably priced?»
Oh and it’s BYOB. Literally the only way to improve upon something that’s already this fun. BYOB robots = un-​improve-​able. Not a single thing I’d change.
Except for that part where we bombed at robot trivia. But the consolation prize was bubbles, so…

Well my robot kept threatening to take over the world, and it was scaring the kids. So we took it to Robocity workshop, the best robot repair shop this side of the Mississippi, and the fine gents of this establishment neutered our robot Stan, and now he’s a sweetheart, an absolute teddy bear. Robocity Workshop, from the bottom of my heart and those of my children, thank you for correcting our previously diabolical robot.

and while it was fun, I can’t possibly justify the $ 55 cost! You get to build a robot w/​a few other couples — each couple gets one robot — while watching a robot-​related movie. It’s a cute idea but the robots cost $ 15 – 25 and you’re watching an old movie in a brightly lit room where you have to bring your own drinks and food. What is the extra $ 30 for?
Building the robot was fun (although, ours didn’t work and ended up having to be repaired & re-​repaired which ended up making it worthless b/​c it was a bubble robot & all the bubble solution ended up getting spilled before we could even try it out) but we could have just as easily bought a robot kit from the store and then went home to build it, resulting in just as good of a time.
Unless they invest in some spotlights for the tables where your building the robots, dim the rest of the lights so that you can actually see the movie, offer complimentary soft drinks, and throw down some real robot knowledge, I wouldn’t come back.

Such a cute little shop with cool toys and friendly staff. I just had my sons fifth birthday here and it was GREAT! The guys running the party (Tom and Domo) were patient and sweet to the little kids while teaching them about circuit boards and building robot bugs. The kids played with robots, built some and then ate cake delivered by an old school robot.
It. was. awesome!!! The price was better than most kid party venues in town and they supplied the paper plates and goody bags to boot!

I’m really not sure why no one has written a review on the Robot Date Night. If there is a review, the search didn’t find it. Anyway!
I live in the neighborhood and happened to walk past RobotCity Workshop on my way home late one night. I mentioned to a friend that is obsessed with robots and she informed me that they put on a Robot Date Night. Needing an idea for a fourth date, I registered for the following Friday. My date and I were the only couple for that date night. Nick was there to lead the evening’s activities and could not have done a better job. We decided to build two things, a bubble blowing robot for her and a hovercraft for myself, all while watching Short Circuit. We worked with a small circuit building kit typically used to teach kids about circuits, motors, and batteries and played with some small robots available in the store. A robot served us drinks and pop corn and there was even robot trivia. I’m terrible at trivia and my loss proved that this time would not be the exception.
I can’t recommend this enough. Nick put on a great program and we both had a thoroughly enjoyable evening!

RobotCity Workshop is such a cool small business. I discovered it when I went looking for a cool gift for my boyfriend’s 4 year old nephew, and wanted something that was more creative than a video game or a sports jersey. All the guys in the family are engineers, so a robot would be the perfect gift. The staff suggested the Wacky Wigglers robot from Gears Gears Gears, which goes together sort of like Legos but with big plastic gears. No wiring needed. On Christmas morning, that was one happy giggly 4 year old! I put it together this time, but he’ll grow into it over time. Building toys are just awesome.
This place is a neighborhood gem. It’s also on my must-​do list of recommendations for out-​of-​town visitors.
Staff is really knowledgeable, and can point you toward the right robot for first-​timers. They know whether it’s about just putting parts together, or whether it requires basic wiring and soldering skills. There’s a lot to choose among, so as the kids get older you can upgrade them to more complex robots.
I learned that RobotCity Workshop offers kids’ parties and is looking into opening a second location in the suburbs.

Awesome small business! We had our daughter’s 7^th birthday there, and one of her guests declared that it was the best bday party she had attended all year. The robot– and circuit-​building activities were stimulating, and the kids seemed to really get into it. The various robots to play with we’re so much fun for young and old alike. What really slayed the kids was the robot that wheeled the birthday cake into the party!
The staff were impeccably professional and great at engaging the kids. That day, Mike and Nick were the entertaining and attentive instructors, while Greg manned the store and was all-​around helpful.
The robots (Smart robot, in our case) were fun and easy to build. All the kids were excited to be able to take their robots home. I really appreciated that it was easy to set up our food, while they provided all the decorations, paper products, and goody bags. Lastly, the store itself, though small, is STUFFED with all things robot. So cool!

Robots automatically equal five stars. That’s a given, but I’ll elaborate more…
It was my friend’s birthday and when I asked his wife what he would like as a gift she told me to «buy him something weird.» So I popped into RobotCity Workshop.
I had been in this store once before with Zak O. but totally forgot that it was there because (1) we had been drinking and (2) we had been drinking a lot. I remembered playing Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em robots with him and debating weather or not his cat would be scared to death of a Roomba. I also remember marveling at the full sized R2D2, asking if it worked, and wondering what my life would be like if he followed me around everywhere. [Conclusion: It would be awesome.]
This time around I was sober and on the hunt for «something weird.» The clerk, who was incredibly nice, showed me some robot kits, some tiny creepy crawly robots, and some robots that were out of my price range. I finally settled on a robot magnet that crawls up and down your refrigerator.
When my friend opened his gift he wanted to go home right away to try it out. Robot success!

Was walking up Sheffield to Wrigley with the fam today and came across this great little shop. We had so much fun looking at everything and checking out everything we could reach that we were late for the baseball game.
After the game w stopped back by again and decided to adopt a pair of nano hex bugs and got a little habitat for them… it wound up being $ 36 after tax and everything. That’s only two dollars more than that amazonian on-​line shopping place, and we got to play with them as soon as we got home… sweet.
I really wanted to get one of the Robotic Arm Edge kits to play with since they looked cool, maybe next time. The other thing they are carrying right now is the remote control R2-​D2 that was featured in Robot magazine last year… looks so awesome!
One suggestion… more Vex kits and how about a remote control Dalek? Yes, I am a nerd, and yes, I absolutely need a remote control Dalek to play with.

Geeks, dweebs, nerds, boffins, eggheads and other creatures who love anything robotic, this is your haunt. A wonderful shop filled with robots of all types including nice collectible pieces. Books, magazines, directions and a bunch of how-​to kits are in great supply. Kudos to a clean place that dweebettes can visit without feeling they’re in someone’s basement.
But…you’d think they’d have a collectible of the robot from Lost in Space? How about a Dalek from Dr. Who? Maybe Twiki from Buck Rogers?
