Scruples II

When I moved to the area a few years ago, I was looking for a salon so I gave Scruples a try due to its convenient location. My first appointment was with Nina for a shampoo and blow dry, and I’ve been going to her ever since. I thought Scruples would just be another overpriced salon but was very pleasantly surprised. Nina is a very talented stylist and colorist. Her pleasant, sweet personality is an added bonus.

I began going there when I was at the nearby hospital, and urgently needed a manicure. The people who work there were incredibly kind and thoughtful, besides doing a great job. I have been back a couple of times, for pedicures and haircut… same wonderful experience. I will keep going back… the building they are in is ADA accessible…

I just moved into the area and it was time for a haircut. I decided to try out Scruples since it is across the street from my residence. I walked in and checked in at the counter. The lady who checked me in told me to walk and go find my hair stylist. This is my first time there so I do not even know who I am looking for. I roamed around aimlessly and embarrassingly, but no one acknowledged me. I also noticed that there is no waiting area. I finally asked a lady doing nails with a customer for help finding him. She just pointed and told me to sit in any stylist chair. I had nowhere to put my coat or my bag and no one offered to take it for me so I just put it on the hairy floor. I saw a guy talking on his cell phone in the back — maybe that is who I was waiting for (and it was). After a couple minutes my stylist finally found me. He did not introduce himself. He did not ask my name. He did not even say «hi». He just waved, pointed, tapped me on the shoulder and played charades in order to communicate with me. I felt very awkward throughout the whole experience. Maybe there was a language barrier that prevented him from talking, but I think he should at least know how to introduce himself in English if that is the case. The hairstylist did take his time with my hair, and I was satisfied with the result. However, I doubt I will return due to the awkwardness and lack of professionalism.

My son has been in RIC for over a month and my short haircut was beginning to look flat and shaggy. Based on other reviews, I made an appointment with Nina. She was wonderful. Most hair stylist do not understand the concept of «please trim off ½ inch» and always cut way too much off. Nina held up my hair and confirmed how much I wanted cut before she ever touched it with sissors. She did a great job, my hair looks like it was cut by my usual stylist. In addition, she seemed to understand that I was tired and just wanted to relax and not talk. Highly recommend Nina, you won’t be disappointed.

I love my hair stylist — Nina. I went to her after trying a lot of hair stylist, though her English is a little weak she understood that I needed a change. She cut my hair and it looked amazing. People actually thought I had a perm when it was my actual hair. My hair routine was cut to next to nothing with this hair style and I was happy that I don’t have to put any hair styling product or straighten it every morning.
The next time I went — I wanted a different hair color and she colored it perfectly. Highly recommended, just for Nina.

Well, I’ll see what the cut is actually like after it dries. This place left a terrible taste in my mouth regardless of how the style looks when I dry it myself. I showed up for my appointment and my stylist Paul was on the phone and they said he would be with me when he was done. When he finished that phone call, he promptly picked up the phone and started another one. 10 minutes isn’t a long time to wait, but since there is nowhere to sit I was able to witness this lack of attentiveness. Since this was my first time here, I was starting to feel hesitant, but the shampoo from another woman (while Paul finished call #2) was really nice and relaxing.
During the cut, I warned Paul not to cut my bangs too short when he started to comb them because they curl, and bam, he didn’t listen and now they’re way shorter than I like to keep them. He informed me that to blow dry my hair would be another $ 35. I don’t mind paying $ 45 for a haircut, since I don’t like to lose a lot of length it’s a glorified trim but I like a nice treat, but $ 80 is way, way too rich for the twenty minutes he spent with me.
So he said he could «rough dry» it for free, and it’s the frizziest I’ve ever looked after drying, even when I just finger comb my hair at home. It’s like he wanted it to look bad, and when I pointed out how frizzy it looked he just told me that’s what happens when you don’t do the full dry. I’ve never felt like a stylist wanted me to look bad after they did their work, but that was how I felt when I walked out of there. The location is super convenient to work, but I am never going back.

I waited for my stylist for 25 minutes and she never showed up.
I had booked my appointment a week in advance for a 10am color and cut. At 10:25, I asked the receptionist if she never how much longer it would be before the stylist arrived, and she told me that she didn’t know and that she only handles the spa and not the hair salon. I then asked the receptionist if the stylist even knew that she had a client waiting, and the receptionist said she didn’t know. Nobody else was working there. I left. I was very upset because I had canceled my whole morning for this appointment. I’m stunned at the lack of professionalism here.

Have been getting waxed threaded mani pedis and my hair done here for years. I literally have tried a million places and they are the only people who know how to manage my hair. My hair is frizzy and damaged so I get trims every few months. I have ways had an amazing experience. Once I got my nails done and was in a hurry so didn’t wait for them to dry I literally ruined every nail and they redid it for me free of charge. Amazing salon love the location and their product selection. Just be sure to call an hour or so before your appointment to be sure they are running on time. Loved this place!

Noreen has been cutting my hair for over ten years. She’s the only person I trust to make me look decent, and she is a genuinely nice person. When Scruples combined spaces with the spa across the hallway, they ended up with a much cleaner space, too. Can’t recommend Noreen enough.

I can only vouch for hair color/​cut and pedicure — 5 star.
I first chose this saloon for its use of Goldwell color, often difficult to find and the very best for me in staying power.
Noreen tweaked my formula ever so slightly to make my blonde even more natural looking and gave me an even nicer version of the layered, face-​framing, but still long-​ish hair style I’ve enjoyed in my past two homes.
It’s always hard to move and trust a new person with hair, but Noreen is as good a listener as a stylist and I was soon at ease. Have now had hair colored and cut by her multiple times over 6 months, and my husband has become a regular customer as well. Son was very happy with his cut there while visiting over the summer also.
Yes, you will find a mix of customers here that is perhaps unique in a «fancy» neighborhood — from senior residents of the building to young students of the nearby universities. And the place may lack showy, ostentatious feel — but do you really want that? I don’t.
If your priority is a well done cut and color in a comfortable atmosphere, this is the spot.

Noreen did a great job on my hair. I was in from out of town, staying at the W hotel, and this place was close. Very pleased, thanks again Noreen.

Haircut was decent, not great, but stylist did not know what styling products were. I’m a dude, so I really don’t need much of anything, but if I ask about products or pomade or clay and u give me a blank state and say you don’t have anything, I assume you don’t know what you are doing. I would not go back to this place

I go here because it’s close by and they have a deal for students.
In general, they’re fine, but not great. A few pet peeves: I don’t like it when my stylist smells like cigarettes (I don’t like the smell of smoke in general, and when they’re touching me and standing in close proximity, it’s almost nauseating); some of the stylists don’t really lather your hair– they kind of slap the shampoo on top of your hair and then just wash it off (very odd, I’ve never seen anything like it).
Not somewhere I’d seek out if I had a choice, but it’s convenient and adequate.

Stopped by Scruples today after a seven year hiatus, Georgette still works there and is as good as ever. Back in grad school, I had a short, military-​ish cut, and now I have a bit more length, but Georgette was great with my current, longer do. If you are an Asian guy, highly recommend Georgette. I usually go to Uni in Arlington Heights to get my haircut, since it is a Japanese place and they know how to cut longer Asian hair, but I don’t think it’s necessary with Georgette around.
Also, is it just me or are there a lot of weird negative reviews about this place? Not paying employees on time, owing money on a lease, sounds like someone has a personal beef that is unrelated to the services provided. And a lot of the negative reviewers have very few reviews. Just saying.

Extremely unprofessional salon. Not only do they always run behind on their appointments, the management berates the staff in public. This place is too overpriced for the quality of service offered. Don’t bother coming here.

Got a haircut here recently — first time downtown after years in Evanston!
But I was pleasantly surprised at how well they understood what I wanted and gave me a great hair cut! I believe my hair was cut by Georgette…
This place doesn’t seem to be doing too well generally — they close a few hours too early because of no business and I’m wondering whether it’s going to shut down soon…

do not ever go here for waxing services. period.
i have been getting brazillian waxing services for 7 years and i have never had someone do such a terrible job!
she actually tore my skin, and bruised me all over. i was bleeding on the sides by my thigh.
