Shit Fountain

I have been wanting to check this out for years. My hubby would just look at me when I would bring it up. Entertaining a 9 year old provided me with the perfect excuse. Having worked in a zoo for 34 years, I felt this was something I really needed to see. I love kitsch and this takes it to a whole new level.
NYW, needless to say, the 9 year old loved it and I think I even heard the faint hint of a chuckle from my husband. That alone is worth 5 stars!

Because its a fountain of shit, that’s why. All hail the shit fountain.

When I lived out in the dirty jerz, there was a magazine called Weird N.J. Basically they published places like Shit Fountain that are off the wall and off the beaten path, and, well, weird.
See, this is exactly why I love Shit Fountain. It’s exactly just that, a fountain that looks like a giant shit. Attractive it is not, but, how often does one look down in the toilet and think: my god, I just created a Van Gogh?
Shit Fountain is always good for a laugh. Mostly because even though I’m over 30, my sense of humor will never truly get past that of 12 yr old Keith.
So, Shit Fountain is and will be for the foreseeable future. Some people can’t get past it, but, let’s all have fun with the picture of a giant turd and run with it, mostly because sometimes we need a giant turd in our lives.

Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?
It’s a fountain. It looks like poop. I expected to find this in the middle of a park, but it’s location is possibly more odd than the sculpture itself. On Wolcott near Augusta, walking down a tree-​lined, residential street, there it is. It is practically in someone’s front yard. I have to wonder how a shit fountain affects property values.
It doesn’t do anything. There is no informational plaque. It’s just a big pile of poop. My husband said it would be better at butt level so people could take pics to make it look like they were pooping. Since there’s a real lack of purpose or artistry here, I have to agree with him.
Worth a looksie is you’re in the neighborhood and for bragging rights since your friends probably never heard of it. I can’t believe we ate pie, chocolate pie, after this. Good thing Minnie from «The Help» wasn’t around.
So why see Shit Fountain?

Holy shit, there are actually reviews for this place?! I can tell everyone on Unilocal about how awesome this little fountain is? SWEET!
Back in the fall of 2008, I used to live in a huge apartment on the corner of Wolcott and Chicago (then the apartment building burned down and I had to move out — it was in the news — true story). Whenever I walked to Division (nearly every day), I’d pass this unique little sculpture. At the time, I was well-​known in my little circle of friends for saying, «Everyone Poops.» I even had the children’s book. I still do – along with «The Gas We Pass» and another book on how to decode your poop for some light bathroom reading. And a blog called «Everyone Poops!» (It’s not there anymore.) So… poop defined me. Therefore, this fountain was pretty much the icing on top of the [shit] cake for me. I loved showing it off! And I’m thrilled that other people love it too.
Who knew that shit could make me happy?

The kids were drivin’ me crazy and it was only a couple of days into their winter break.
I had to get out of the house and go do something…
so I got onto google and I typed ‘weird shit in Chicago.‘
This came up.
I have to admit…
I’d never heard of the Shit Fountain before.
‘Could it possibly be real’ I wondered.
I got the kids in the car and I plugged the coordinates of this mystical sight into the GPS.
I told them we were gonna see something cool.
I didn’t tell them exactly what it was.
It was going to be a surprise.
‘This better not be like that time you took us to see all the Dutch windmills in Illinois in one day dad’ one of them chided.
They’re still bitter about that.
‘I hope it’s not some historical marker or something like that either.‘
I only told them that I was gonna take them to see something like they had never seen before.
Parking the car I gathered them up and crossed the street…
When they saw it their jaws dropped…
they looked at each other and one of them said…
‘dad… you’re an idiot.‘
Followed by…
‘I’ll be in the car’
and ‘me too.‘
I thought it was kinda edgy though.
I heard that it’s a piece of protest art created by a guy who got sick of people not cleaning up after their dogs.
I thought maybe it was a commentary on the state of Chicago politics.
Regardless…
it was a very quiet drive to the Chicago History Museum after that.
‘This better be a real museum dad.‘
If you wanna check out the Shit Fountain in Chicago it’s at 1005 N. Wolcott Avenue.

It’s not every day you see a brazen pile of dookie… unless you’re living near the corner of Wolcott Ave and Augusta Blvd… then it’s normal.
I heard about this place on… yup, you guessed it Unilocal!Thank’s to a fellow Unilocalers review, this place was put on my «What the hell is that!?!» Radar.
Here’s what’s awesome about this gem of place:
It’s poop and it’s bronze. No trying to Decipher the «Meaning» of it… It’s right there clear as day «Shit Fountain»
If you look at the actual gallery though, you’ll find a large wood carving of an angel, not as fun as «Shit Fountain» but, a work of art nonetheless. There’s quite a bit of detail that was put into it.
I’d say check it out, plus, there’s plenty of food joints and bars in that area too. Great little «Local Flavor» after hittin’ up a bar.

Ergonomic design, interesting use of mosaic tiles as accent pieces, and nice font to proclaim what it is (SHIT FOUNTAIN) aside… the water tastes funky…

5 Stars… bc mentally (and I’m told this almost daily) I’m 5 years old.
Poo, Poop, Poopy, DooDoo, Dookie, Dung, Caca, Crap, #2, Growing a Tail, Dropping the kids off at the pool, Prairie Doggin’… really, I could go on forever… but so many ask me not to. Anyway you skew it, I’m down with the browns.
I had very few requests for my birthday this past year.
1. Brookfield Zoo– it’s tradition and on any given March 30^th you’ll surely find me here… most likely in the Aardvark housing area.
2. Showmen’s Rest– Circus Cemetery? Hyup. I want to go to there.
3. Shit Fountain– because, and let’s face it, we’re all full of it and it’s not everyday or every neighborhood that you get to see this kind of low brow humor on the reg.
Simply Put: I love this fountain bc/​I love poop and stories about it. Having a monument dedicated to #2 only excites me more and to give it anything less than 5 stars would have my friends, family, coworkers, lovers, acquaintances, and anything in between question my loyalties.

Post Post Script: Isn’t it funny how some parts of your body are allergic to certain thing, but others aren’t? Main Example/​Ponder Point: Your butt can have poop in it and you’d be just fine, but your mouth, on the other hand, would have some seriously strong words and reactions to the 2s. #ilovescience

Surprised the Gf by bringing her here. If I would have told her, she would have poo-​pooed the idea since it was turdy minutes away. Be sure to come on a sunny day and not a crappy one so that you can experience the magnificent brown colors of the pile. This statue is just dumped in someone’s front yard and looks out of place on a residential street. You can bring the little squirts and tell them that it came from a dinosaur that ate a high fiber diet.

Went here over the weekend. Pretty much what you’d expect. The side of the piece has the name carved in big letters, and actually says the S word. A great place for a funny picture. There are a few other art pieces by Jerzy S. Kenar in the area. I like the bird silhouettes in the tree in front.
Definitely a fun place to take visitors.
