Join us in our vintage loft & learn the art of letterpress.

Tandem Felix Letterpress is a letterpress print shop & teaching studio, specializing in designs printed by hand from vintage movable type.

We host Workshops, One-​on-​one Sessions & Regular Classes, where you can print-​your-​own project!

Whether it’s printing your own wedding invitations or creating posters in a team building workshop, we invite you to be as hands-​on as you’d like!

At Tandem Felix, we work with you at every stage to create printed goods that leave a lasting impression.

History

Established in 2013.

Tandem Felix Letterpress is Jamiel Dado and Elizabeth Isakson-​Dado.

The couple met in 2006 at a rock show in Detroit. Jamiel’s indie rock band was playing, and Liz was selling her hand-​printed t-​shirts. They have been collaborating ever since.

After their wedding in 2011, Liz & Jamiel moved to Chicago and became involved in the local music and art community.

Inspired by their creative background, Liz & Jamiel founded Tandem Felix Letterpress as a working studio, with an aesthetic equally inspired by the history of fine art printing, and the DIY attitude of Rock & Roll.

Manager

Elizabeth Isakson-​Dado is an artist and musician working in installation, hand papermaking, letterpress printing and new media.

She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Wayne State University (2004), and a Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Book & Paper Art from Columbia College Chicago (2013). Her paintings and artist’s books have been shown at Detroit Contemporary, Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Center for Book & Paper Arts.

Elizabeth was named Top 20 in their 20’s by Crain’s Detroit Business, Lyceum Visiting Artist at University of Michigan Press, Featured Emerging Artist at Wyandotte Art Fair and has received an Access Arts Grant for Public Art in Detroit.

Before starting Tandem Felix Letterpress with her husband, Jamiel, Elizabeth was an adjunct instructor of Letterpress at Columbia College.

One of the coolest places I’ve been in years. The loft building that houses this creative studio is amazing… it doesn’t stop there. Liz is knowledgable and generous with her energy, her expertise and her art supplies… I went for a letterpress class and Liz was as genuinely excited with the prints that we (the students) made as she likely would have been for one of her own prints. Liz has so many fonts and cool «bits» that can be used in creating creative prints… cool stuff like a few rashers of bacon cooking in a cast iron skillet — who knew?
It would be hard not to feel inspired in this space, under the direction of Liz. The loft is peppered with countless prints created by Liz and her husband. The music in the background while we worked was played off of a turntable. Musical instruments are among the «cool elements» of décor found around the loft — leading me to imagine that the couple breaks from their work to have a jam session…
Just adored Tandem Felix — I cannot wait to go back!

My fiancé and I were recently engaged and were looking for ideas on how we wanted to handle having the announcements printed. We checked out the Renegade Craft Fair and found some interesting letterpress items and were convinced that this was the way we wanted to go. We called a few different places to discuss pricing, etc. and they were generally pretty expensive, and most weren’t local. My fiancé did some research and found Tandem Felix online. We traded some emails with Liz, the proprietor, and were told that we’d get to design, and actually assist in the printing of, our announcements.
We really liked the idea of getting to have a lot of input into the design and were looking forward to learning something about letterpress. We visited the studio in the Lacuna Studios in Pilsen (which were awesome) and chatted with Liz and Jamiel for a half hour or so. They were totally cool and their individual studio is very comfortable with music instruments, some audio equipment, a gorgeous ‘old timey’ letter press and examples of the work that they do. In short, their individual studio was very comfortable and inviting. We chatted, went through the process with Liz and set up an appointment for a month later.
When we came in the month later Liz welcomed us and was extremely helpful to us. She let us come up with the design ourselves but assisted us in the more tedious/​difficult parts of the letterpress process. It was great to see and participate in the whole process from beginning to end. Working the actual letterpress was even more satisfying. By the end of the day, we had announcements done and they looked great (we might be a bit biased). We were very pleased with the whole experience.
The cost was VERY reasonable (I’m not going to say how much it was because I want to give them latitude in case they choose to increases their prices a bit, which would be totally justified).
Also, it was BYOB so we were able to sip on a tall boy and listen to some tunes throughout the process. 5 stars.
