History

Established in 1990.

Since 1990, Drs Russell Baer and Martin Marcus have been practicing dentistry together. In 2003 University Associates in Dentistry became their practice with Dr Baer concentrating in implant dentistry and Dr. Marcus concentrating in cosmetic dentistry. That has created the leadership that University Associates in Dentistry /​Dental Implant Institute of Chicago is proud of. Associates Drs. Kathryn Delfs (general dentistry ~ concentrating in invisalign), Matthew Hallas (prosthodontist~ with an emphasis in implants) and Rauf Yousuf (periodontist) enable UAD to meet all of your dental needs under one roof!

Dr. Baer is an active member of the Academy of Osseointegration and the International Congress of Oral Implantology. His passion of implant dentistry led him to the former Soviet Union, where he founded and serves as Academic Director of the Chicago Center for Advanced Dentistry. The center is the leading training center for oral implantology and advanced dental techniques in the former Soviet Union, with offices in Moscow, Kiev, Vilnius, Almaty and Mumbai India. Dr. Baer continues mentoring and educating general dentists on implantology at our UAD location. Dr. Marcus grew up with a passion for dentistry in a family of dentists including his father and brother. His interests lie in the areas of cosmetic and esthetic dentistry. Dr. Marcus uses Cerec technology, which allows him to place crowns, fillings and veneers in ONE visit. He is a member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Chicago Dental Society, Cranial Academy and Seattle Study Club.

The dentist seems nice, as does the hygienist I had. I’ve only had 2 cleanings, one exam, and one chip repair. The chip repair done only lasted less than 6 months, which is disappointing, but my main complaint is the the arrogant and rude front desk staff and schedulers.
I just wasted my entire morning because the scheduler got it wrong. I made an emergency appointment two days ago for this morning. I made it for this morning because that’s what was offered to me over the phone. The scheduler said, «How about Wednesday at 10:30?» I said, «Great. Wednesday works.» At no point in the conversation did the date come up and nor did the word «next.» So because the date was never mentioned or the word «next,» as in «next Wednesday,» I arrived… on Wednesday, today. Only to be told it was for next week. So morning wasted.
But that wasn’t the worst part. The worst was when I questioned this, and the woman who had made the original appointment got straight up bitchy with me. No apology, no customer service. Instead, she got this crazy look in her eyes and pulled some seriously unprofessional attitude by snapping at me, «I don’t remember what I said. I didn’t record it.» Well done. I will return for my chip repair because I think I am owed that since the first one didn’t last long, but I don’t need to come back to your office after that. So you did the Blackhawks’ dentistry for a year or two? Who cares! You still owe the rest of us some graceful customer service and humility.
My advice for others, there are plenty of dentists in this town. Find one whose front office shows a little respect and knows how to schedule an appointment.

I have seen Dr Zalay quite a few times over the last two months because I had terrible problems with my teeth. I felt significant pain during and after eating. Now I can enjoy meals again. Dr Zalay began with a complete assessment of my teeth and designed a treatment plan to fix my entire mouth starting with the most severe problems. She did most of the work herself, but sent me to Dr Peinado for root canals. It increasesd my confidence that she wanted the best care for me, even if someone else got the fee. She had to remove some teeth and make some crowns. She was patient, kind and considerate throughout all the visits and the rest of the staff were also courteous and professional. Dr Zalay is a caring woman and a talented professional. I recommend her without hesitation.

I recently saw Dr. Zalay and am beyond happy with my switch to University Associates in Dentistry. I can be a bit squeamish about seeing the dentist but having a cavity filled by Dr. Zalay was actually a pleasure — I’m not sure how that is possible but I somehow walked away with healthy teeth and having truly enjoyed my time in the chair. I felt at ease, taken care of, and that I was in the hands of a consummate professional. Highly recommended!!!

Dr. Baer and his staff are excellent. Russ has been my dentist since 2000.
Recently I had an implant done. Honestly it looks better than my original tooth! I’m so thankful my smile has gotten better with age. :) Really. He matched the color of the implant to the rest of my teeth perfectly. That was not easy to do. The tooth I lost had a root canal from a childhood baseball accident. It was darker and distracting in my smile. I get comments now more than ever of how young I look.

I have been a patient of University Associates in Dentistry for at least fifteen years, and I recommend them to everyone who needs a great dental group. The staff is amazing, and always nice. It is a pleasure to go there, as much as that can be said for dental work. The professionals are talented individuals, and they handle every aspect of dentistry right there — implants, gum grafts, the works.
They recently went one notch higher in my books, though. I convinced my sister to come for a check up, after having put off dental work for a very long time. The dentist discovered a lump on her neck, which turned out to be cancer. They went one step further, and got her in for dental work that needed to be done before she could start radiation and chemotherapy within days. She’s doing fine, and we have the good professionals at UAD to thank for that.

Wow!
I was a historical person who avoided the dentist at all cost. Having worked with the people people at UAD that has changed forever. I had a situation that seemed simple and turn out to be fairly complex to the point that Dr. Zalay, Dr. Martin and Dr. Baer all evaluated my situation. We decided on a plan and the staff stayed past closing time do assist with my procedure.

As a Dentist and Implantologist myself. I have watched Dr. Baer perform countless procedures over the last 15yrs.. He the best in the Chicago area for any and all dental needs. he is among the top 10 best impantologist in the world. When I need an Implant I will be flying from Santa Barbara CA. to Chicago to have him place my implant. I want the best when it comes to my teeth. and this is office is where I go. I moved to Chicago about two years ago and my dentist back home recommended Dr. Baer and his team. He said if I lose a tooth these are the guys to help me out! :) I don’t ever plan on losing teeth however my experience at UAD has been a pleasant one so far!
My hygienist is Kathy Laskodi and she’s great. You won’t find many hygienists better than her! I have seen both Dr. Baer and Dr. Taylor for my check ups and recommend them both. I have also worked with Dr. Marcus for a consultation to get a gap closed.
Overall, UAD is good and their staff very professional and friendly. As long as I live in Chicago I’ll keep coming back to them. And if the Chicago Blackhawks trust UAD with their dental care, you know these guys are good!

THE BEST!!! Dr. MARCUS is the gentlest most sensitive dentist I have been to. After 20 years with a dentist who retired, I went to 3 others. Had posts from teenage years and needed an implant. 3 others messed up. I have trigeminal neuralgia, a severe chronic facial nerve pain that caused me to not be able to even brush my teeth for 6 months. He was so patient, kind and understanding. Did everything he could do to avoid triggering the pain. I now live in Washington DC. Fly home to Chicago to see him. I won’t go to anyone else until he retires. Which I hope is a long time from now.

I was a first-​time patient and had an excellent experience. The staff members were friendly and intelligent, there was no wait, and Dr. Marcus was great. I had a relatively simple cosmetic procedure and he explained exactly what he what he was going to do so I felt completely comfortable. I have always had average experiences with dentists in the past — either the wait time was ridiculous, they lectured too much, or they were a little creepy, but Dr. Marcus and his team were excellent. I would definitely go back.

I feel truly lucky to be Dr. Baer’s patient. Within less than a year, I had a tooth pulled out, an implant, a crown on another tooth, and a filling in a difficult spot — all done by him. I think he is a much better specialist precisely because he hasn’t narrowed his specialization as other dentists regularly do. This allows him to approach his patients’ dental idiosyncrasies holistically. While other dentists I’ve seen in the past tend to exaggerate the problem in order to make you realize how good they are at fixing it, Dr. Baer never boasts. He does not need to – his expertise is obvious. Moreover, his is realistic, down-​to-​earth, with a good sense of humor.
The staff at UAD is wonderfully competent. No false smiles to cover omissions. No long waiting. They really seem to know how to schedule. Everyone is behaving naturally and their main concern is doing a good job. On top of all that, while UAD is not cheap, they seem to by slightly cheaper than other good dentists in the same area.

I have a MAJOR dental phobia, in addition to being blessed with not so great genetics and thus not so great teeth. I originally went to UAD over a X-​mas holiday years ago as I had lost a tooth and my current dentist was out for the holiday, and I couldn’t find anyone else to see me. I was in pain and in a panic — and Dr. Marcus saved the day. I went back until I lost my dental insurance, saw no one for a couple of years (not good) and have just started going back again on a regular basis this year now that I have dental insurance under my husband’s health plan. Once again they are working with me to fix my variety of dental issues.
True, it is not cheap, but it is SOOOO worth it. I have seen Dr. Marcus and two other dentists there, and everyone is kind and patient with me and my phobia… they’ve probably seen me crying and about to hyperventilate on several occasions, but they work with me on my issues, go at my pace, are very gentle and do a damn fine job too. Unlike other dentist’s offices I had experienced, I have never been mocked or teased or even looked at funny when I burst into tears or ask them to stop because I feel panicky. They are so good…
I could go on and on — I just can’t say enough nice things about UAD and their entire staff. Major thumbs up in my book.

Been going to UAD for about 5 years now after I started randomly grinding my teeth. My godmother’s referral got me in for some «emergency» work to handle that minor issue quickly and I signed on to be a regular client ever since.
Dr. Marcus kills it and, unlike past dental experiences, doesn’t make me feel guilty for not doing things with my teeth and gums perfectly. Two examples:
«I should floss more huh?»
«Yes, but ease into it.»
«Do I *need* X-​rays?»
«Yes, but you can always wait ’til next time.»
Knock on wood, I haven’t had any problems since so I can’t speak to the other services, but if you’re in the City and confused by the options (I swear there’s a dentist on every corner these days), Dr. Marcus is definitely worth checking out.
Showing me the «before» picture from Duncan Keith’s 2010 playoff «mishap» was a tad much though ;) In any case, I hated the dentist more than anything until I started going to UAD.

My teeth are good. No dental work-​so I only go three to four times a year for a cleaning. I also don’t carry dental insurance.
They do good work. It’s not cheap, $ 150 for a cleaning.

Dr. Marcus and his team are absolutely wonderful. They are all completely professional and easy to talk to. I originally went to get full on top veneers and Dr. Marcus was nothing but knowledgeable, kind and made me feel at complete ease. One of the steps in my veneer process was a gingivectomy. It sounds completely horrifying but with Dr. Marcus it was completely painless. It is a process where they numb you up and re-​shape your gums so that they look more symmetrical to your face. I did not feel a thing — only a slight shot of Novocaine which is normal. Given the amazing look of my new gums I decided not to go through with the veneers and Dr. Marcus could not be more understanding. His goal is to make you look good. He never pushes or rushes.
I have nothing but amazing things to say about Dr. Marcus and would recommend him to anyone looking for a nice, professional, easy to talk to dentist in the city.
