We’ll Keep You In Stitches

I discovered this little shop in 2005 and have been buying yarn and meeting to sit and knit here ever since. I already knew how to knit, but the ladies here are always helpful and kind and assist me with technique and patterns. I have only purchased my yarn from this shop here in Chicago (I tend to purchase yarn in cities I travel to as well if I stumble upon a knit shop).
This is not a shop that offers classes, but if you purchase your yarn there, they are more than happy to assist you to teach you the basics. Note — that this is not a shop where your hand is held. Most everyone I have met here over the years is an experienced knitter, and they come several times a week to sit and knit and chat. It is a nice environment.
The owner and the ladies who work here are not 20 something knitters who are in it for the hobby of the moment. These are serious knitters who know their craft.
I would highly recommend popping in. And the ladies are not mean here. If you treat them kindly and with respect, then you will get that in return.

The name is cute; otherwise do not waste your time. Owner (?) could not be bothered to get up from her project to welcome us. All yarn in plastic bags. Store hardly stocked. Evidently keeps uncertain hours so not always there even during posted hours.

This store was wonderful! The ladies were sooooo helpful! If we lived in the Windy City my husband would always know where he could find me. The yarn was exquisite.

First, I would bet money this woman, or a family member owns the property and uses this store as a knitting «room.»
Terrible location, stale smell, not easy to browse items.
More importantly, I called first to see if they had what I needed. They said they did, but when I got there it was obvious that they just didn’t listen to what I asked for.
And they seemed irritated to have partially gotten through the transaction only to cancel, rather than apologetic for having given me wrong information and wasted an hour of my time!

This place is wonderful for beginners! I came in and was immediately greeted by a sweet older Russian lady who told me to take off my coat and get comfortable. She asked what I was making and I confessed that I wanted to learn to knit and she reached for my hand and told me to talk to Betty and she’d teach me how. When I found Betty and told her I was new to knitting and what I wanted to make she sat me down and got me started. I am making dishcloths and she helped me find the right yarn then asked me how many inches I wanted it to be. She got me started and sat with me until I got the hang of it. Once I felt comfortable I checked out and she told me to come back if I have any questions at all. I definitely agree with one of the other raters: If you are polite and respectful then you will have a GREAT experience with this store!

GREAT store, with lots of high end beautiful yarns, but there’s also a large box of half-​priced yarns, often enough for a full garment (not just single skeins!). Betty, the owner is very helpful, and will write patterns for you and help you if you’re stuck with a problem. They don’t offer formal classes but will teach you how to knit as long as you buy the yarn there. They also offer finishing, and have lots of needlework canvases and yarns, too. I love this place and have been a loyal customer for more than a decade.

Sure, the older, fancy ladies who congregate there to knit all day can be snotty; I’ve seen them snap at girls who go in with attitudes themselves. IGNORE THEM.
As for the owner, I’ve found that the secret to getting good customer service here is similar to the trick I must work with my elderly «proper» aunts: respect, deference, and dignity. Don’t barrel through here, don’t be too loud, don’t act entitled, don’t simper, and you’ll do fine. Really, you set the tone of the interaction here — if you behave well, she’ll treat you well. If you’re a bad customer, she will you no quarter.
As for her sister-​in-​law, the wonderful, warm-​hearted Russian woman who does the professional knitting for customers, I can’t say enough good things about her. She is an amazing teacher, and I love talking with her.
This shop is totally worth putting on your big girl pants and best manners.

I love this store– It is tiny and off the beaten path but the ladies are very helpful and they have a good selection of neat yarns. I originally went in there because I didn’t know how to cast off a scarf I had fumbled through and they were more than willing to teach me and show me new tricks. They are a little expensive but it’s a boutique shop so I understand. They are helpful and will order anything you can’t find.

I’ve always loved this tiny store. It’s hidden on the 4^th floor off of OAK but the selection is pretty good and there’s a Russian lady who works there who is so helpful and will start a project for you and pick out the right needles for you. I was a beginner when I came here and they made it so easy for me.
It’s not a fancy looking store and the prices are not cheap but it’s worth it for good quality. I think this is the only store around the area for good yarn so if you’re around, go there.
BTW, there are some ladies there who aren’t the friendliest but don’t mind them, just go in with an open mind.
