Fredericka Manor Care Center

My room was very hot and it often took over 1 hour for my call light to be answered. They stole my clothing and No One here cared! The woman in Charge Shella yelled at my daughter when she was asked about my clothing. I will never return here again!

This is a difficult review to write. My aunt, 98 years of age, a retired Registered Nurse, has been under the care of Fredericka Manor Care Center for several months now.
The ironic background is that my aunt, along with my mother, owned a senior care facility in Chula Vista, and often checked on the fees and services offered by Fredericka Manor. My mother has passed on, and now my aunt is in Fredericka Manor. Their rest home was sold.
Please note that the Care Center is a completely different facility than the senior residential housing facility, although under common ownership and located contiguously.
My aunt needs care due to a heart attack, which has left her quite weakened physically, although mentally and emotionally she is as healthy as ever. Being a retired RN, and a former owner of a senior care facility, she knows what to expect of Fredericka Manor. So far, she has stated she is satisfied with the care she has been receiving.
My observations are that the staff members treat her with respect, professionalism and kindness. But as a visitor, I recognize that sometimes staff members can be on their best behavior while being scrutinized. And my aunt has mentioned one or two exceptions that she was able to rectify on her own.
Her daily routine is as active as possible, under the circumstances. I have accompanied her on her daily (sometimes twice daily) physical therapy sessions. I think it is remarkable what the staff has these octogenarians and nonagenarians like my aunt physically accomplishing. Oftentimes, the road to recovery (and return to home) depends upon the progress that physical therapy can expedite. The PT staff is excellent, according to my aunt. I agree.
The food is OK, also according to my aunt. Honestly, it didn’t look bad at all when served, but the bane of all cafeteria-​style food served on multiple floors, is the lack of warmth. The meals arrive generally lukewarm, but certainly edible. I’ve tried the coffee, and it’s better than expected.
Fredericka Manor publishes a schedule of daily activities that looks quite comprehensive. It is up to the individual patient to decide which, if any, activities to attend or participate in.
So far, so good. My aunt judges Fredericka Manor to be A-​OK. I have found no basis to disagree.

Fredericka Manor Care Center is an overall «OK» facility to send your loved ones. The NURSING staff are all very helpful. But they are over worked and understaffed. One nurse who was working on the floor seemed to look terribly sick to the point where she couldn’t focus on her job and had a temperature of 103! Not only is that harmful to other staff and visitors, BUT TO THE RESIDENTS. The downside to this facility, Administration is very unresponsive to family requests, and doesn’t seem to care about their staff. Don’t you need staff who is fully aware and healthy to tend to resident needs? Administration always says, «we’ll get back to you» «we’ll work on that» but their actions do not show. This review is coming from the inside, so believe me when I say, administration is not understanding to staff, family members, and residents like they SHOULD BE. They are NOT honest on their state survey or to their staff, and does NOT deserve 5 stars.

My mom was in Fredricka for over 7 years, she was well cared for until she passed away. I love the fact that the staff was always encouraging her to get outside, and to eat, problems we had had with her when she was at home. I Thank the staff for all of the hard work that they do, many homes smell bad and the patients are not alert or dressed, my mom was always encouraged to do more and interact. Thank you for all you have done for our family.

In 2013 my grandmother was transported to this facility for rehabilitation after a hip replacement surgery. The staff are made up of interning CNAs and LVNs, and only 1 RN to manage a single floor. During the two week stay, we never saw or were introduced to a single doctor, despite several requests. The male workers would bathe the female patients without the help of a female nurse, which i dont find ok at all. My grandmother developed a bedsore which is a result from not being rotated in her bed. At the start of that bedsore, my mother made it an issue to get it healed, because it was started due to negligence. Eventually the staff told my mother that the bedsore had completely healed. Not long after that, they hooked her up onto a respirator where she later went into cardiac arrest. the nurses were using Kleenex to clean the foam from her mouth;; unprofessional and unsanitary. When we got to the hospital the doctor alerted us of the gaping bedsore she had on her back; about 6 inches long and two in a half inches wide, so bad a specialist had to look and care to it.
For a whole week they lied to all of our faces, telling us the bedsore was healed. That’s a breach of a nurses code of ethics; absolutely no integrity; who knows what other negligence happens when the family members are not there.

I want to give my impressions of the skilled nursing facility. Fredericka Manor proudly states it’s been providing care for nearly a century. Make that perhaps fifty years for their nursing facility, which feels like a throwback to the 1960s. Lots of scuff marks on walls, old fixtures — the place hasn’t aged well at all.
While many of the nursing staff who cared for a relative were very good to excellent, we found the management to be pretty non-​responsive. Oh, they said the right things, like «we’ll be right on it,» blah blah blah, but seldom followed through.
My brother was in charge of the relative’s care, and when I visited, I found some appalling conditions. Even after both he and I brought those condiditons to the attention of management, they were not fixed. They were addressed only after outside professionals intervened.
I pushed to have the relative transferred from a more expensive facility to Fredericka Manor in order to save money. She died there, and Fredericka Manor was, let us say, unhelpful in the last few days of her life.

PROS: Nice older facility, has plenty of activities. Admin Director was very nice and compassionate about her job and her role at Fredericka.
PROS: Plenty of staffing
CONS: They don’t take good care of the «resident». They have to be told what needs to be done. ie: check soiled resident, check oxygen, check blood pressure, clean out his mouth, etc. Usual response from nurses, «Oh, he’s fine». «He’s ok». «Everything looks good». They get very defensive and would rather blame it on «someone» else than rather own up to it and say, «This is what were going to do to take care of this». Or let me call the Doctor to find out what the next step is. Dr basically washed his hands of the situation after finding out our Dad had been unresponsive for 2 days. 2DAYS!!!
The short story of this place… I would NOT recommend this place to anyone that is in need of care due to lack of independence and spiraling health issues. If your looking for a place to dump someone off and be forgotten, this is the place.

Friendly staff, fun activities for the patients/​residents, nice quiet location.
