We also offer guided mountain bike trips using our fleet of high quality Trek and Gary Fisher mountain bikes, guided flatwater kayaking trips on beautiful, undeveloped Ocoee Lake #3, and unparalleled whitewater kayaking instruction with a fleet full of Jackson Kayaks.
We are located within easy driving distance of Atlanta, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Birmingham and western North Carolina, making us a great option for a day trip, or a full weekend getaway.
History
Established in 1996.
Larry Mashburn is the managing partner and founding member of the Ocoee Adventure Center. A long time avid whitewater kayaker, Larry became involved with the planning and organization of the 1996 whitewater slalom events in the Atlanta Olympics. After spending so much time in the Ocoee River Area with the Olympics, Larry decided that starting a rafting company wouldn’t be such a bad idea. He left behind a successful career in retail consulting, and all the amenities of city life in Atlanta, Georgia and moved to the simple life of the Ocoee. The rest is history! OAC began taking rafting trips in 1997, providing the longest, most playful trips on the river. Years of great service have led the company to much success and growth. We started with one bus and 6 rafts — now we own 4 full size busses, 3 mini-busses and 40 or so rafts. We started with just a small log-cabin building and one tiny parking lot. Now we still have a small log cabin building, but a whole lot more parking.
Meet the Manager
Peter H.
Manager
2010 will be Peter’s 5th year managing the Ocoee Adventure Center, and his sixth year living in the Ocoee area. Peter’s mom brought him to the nearby Hiawassee River when he was about 5, and he’s spent as much time as possible here since. His family built a cabin about 30 minutes from OAC’s outpost when he was in high school; just about every weekend of his youth you could find him paddling his canoe on the Ocoee or other area rivers. While attending UGA he took a brief hiatus from the river, but it always remained close to his heart. After college Peter continued to live in Athens, GA, selling real estate, and again started making weekend trips to the area. A real estate deal brought him back to the Ocoee and a strange series of events found him managing OAC. Finally living in the area that’s always felt like home to him, says Peter: «Instead of sitting in an office, a bad Monday morning for me means I’m short one raft guide and I have to get on the river myself — oh dang!»
