History
Established in 2010.
Chris and Emily began baking in Crested Butte in the winter of 2010. First selling bread out of the house in a small CSA style operation to friends and neighbors. Mountain Oven was created in March of 2010 with the intention of growing to sell at the summer farmers market. Gathering friends around the tasty cause, they soon formed into the «breadmafia» as locals began calling it. A gang of friends who baked and danced into the night in group effort to produce a reasonably priced highly nutritious product for the town and its people.
Thus began the spread of positive energy.
Now Mountain Oven is an establish bakery that sells a variety of products to health food stores and restaurants in the Gunnison Valley.
Our home location is our new bakery café located at 21 Elk Ave in Crested Butte, open for business with bread, baked goods, breakfast and lunch, and coffee through our partners First Ascent Coffee Roasters.
Meet the Business Owner
Chris S.
Business Owner
Mountain Oven founders Chris and Emily both studied agriculture, food culture, and a number of intersecting environment issues in their years at Hamilton college (where they met and began co-creating). In the creation of the bread business they paired that foundation of knowledge with their passions for creation, community building, social change, and a love of good food with a humanitarian/environmentally minded ethos.
Chris focused his academic focus on agricultural studies in school, forming a concentration which examined agricultural models from a philosophical perspective. Chris also focused a lot of energy on community building at school, helping to found a cooperative living house of twenty residents (where he learned to bake sourdough breads) and helping to found a ½ acre community farm on campus. Chris’ passion for food, from seed to feast, underlies the working philosophies of Mountain Oven.
