Crepe House Uni

I am SO sad.
I tried to go here last night after dinner on Picnic Day, but they were closed! Forever! Apparently they closed down in March 2010. More here:
These delicious crepes always made my sporadic trips to Davis a little sweeter. I used to get the gelato crêpe with hazelnut gelato just because it reminded me most of nutella ice cream. I tried other ones too, which were equally as good, but I guess it wouldn’t help to review those now ahha.
I guess I’ll have to go to SF for my Japanese crêpe fix. *cries*

i forgot to mention that within a week after posting my review of this place, the manager left me a message on Unilocal,asking for feedback to improve the crepes. Clearly the business cared about making their customers happy with their foods.
+1 more star for the manager last year. I’ll try this place again next time I’m in town and update my post.

This place is awesome! Lots of delicious crepes to try! These are more traditional Japanese crepes, so don’t go in expecting a crepeville-​like meal. The focus is more on the crêpe itself (which is delicious). They also have a bunch of other menu items worth checking out. …for example, the curry rice is even better after a few drinks (they’re open late on the weekend).
It’s a fun place just to hang out, too. They have free fast wifi as well as PS3 and WII, so you can just chill here and get drinks and food or whatever. The workers are all really friendly, too, so say hi!

I first got addicted to these kind of crepes back in high school when I used to venture to J-​Town in the city. My favorite is the one with strawberries, chocolate syrup and whipped cream (add on nutella for that extra sweetness).
The people that work here are always very friendly and helpful. Last few times I’d gone here there were only a few other people inside (and half of those few were the ones that worked there). Despite the emptiness of the place, it took them quite a while to make the crepes although I guess it shows that they are taking their time to be precise and not just smashing everything together in a hurry.
Good for if you want to eat there — not good for if you want to take your crepes to go. They put it in a paper/​plastic cone/​sleeve thing and don’t have any to-​go boxes so if you want a crêpe, I’d suggest eating it right then and there — tastes better right after they make it anyway.

If you’re complaining about their uniforms, get over it! the workers don’t wear their skimpy outfits anymore, although they are on display. I don’t understand why so many people made such a ruckus over their costumes?
Prior to having Uni’s, I haven’t had a crêpe since six years ago. I vowed never to eat a crêpe because of it’s simplicity. I mean who would pay $ 5 for tin pancakes, whip cream and a drip of chocolate syrup as a to go meal? With Crêpe House Uni they have a lot of their selection plastered on their front window! So many flavors and so many ideas! I never knew that you could get a crêpe with cheese cake or a sandwich! BTW, if you feel grossed out about the idea of a sandwich in a crêpe, then get over it! There are TONS of other crepes restaurants that make sandwiches.
I had their cheese cake crêpe and I LOVED IT! I like to see how they make it all too! There are plenty of seats all around & a outdoor patio but it’s a bit difficult to find parking since the location is on a busy main street.

Sadly, one of Davis’ many overly PC busybodies appears to have gotten hold of this place and the staff no longer wears stylized maid costumes in the Japanese style. Sigh.
Sad, and it eliminates one of the things that made the place unique. Still, it’s a nice place. If you’ve ever had a Japanese style crêpe, this place is pretty much a standard example of the form. Personally I prefer these kinds of crepes to traditional crepes, but it’s something of an acquired taste.
For your first time a desert crêpe or a more «safe» crêpe is probably your best bet, once you’re used to the flavors, try getting more adventurous.

The don’t wear those crazy costumes/​uniforms anymore, I wonder why.
I first went here when they had just open not that long ago and had a dessert crêpe. Being the fatty that I am, I added in chocolate gelato and strawberry on top of the «rare cheesecake» and whipped cream. The whole concoction came in a flimsy plastic wrap taped into a cone. It was quite difficult to eat and half way through, the whole thing melted and meshed together into one unappetizing blob at the bottom of the plastic cone. I haven’t gotten a crêpe from here since, not that it wasn’t good, but because it was on the expensive side (I think it was almost $ 7 because of all my additives) and a bit messy to eat.
Now I only come here for the gelato. The workers are extremely nice about sampling since they offer different flavors frequently. The scoops are pretty small, especially since they go for $ 2.50 a scoop, but I know now to come during their happy hours (
). Wednesdays are an especially good deal, dollar scoop! I want to come here every Wednesdays now!

I’ve noticed this shop for a while, but until a few days ago, never chanced to walk in. To me, it looked like a nice rendition of Sophie’s Crepes ala San Francisco’s Japan Town. However, Uni Crêpe House is so much more than that – a creperie that transports you from the quaint streets of Davis to the edgy streets of inner Tokyo.
To begin with, Uni Crêpe House is technically a maid café (though I did not see any in uniform when I went). What is a maid café? Well, pretty much every guys fantasy. A maid café insists of a café serving confectionery delicacies all served by attractive girls in French style maid ensembles. If you wanted to, you could even purchase a maid or gothlic lolita dress at the creperie for a mere $ 200 dollars or so (I do believe those items are hand made).
The food, crepes in both savory and sweet varieties, are about the closest thing you’ll get to Japanese style – with prices to match. My friend tried a Japanese style crêpe, filled with green tea ice cream and anko (red bean paste), while I stayed with a more American style route and opted for the tropical fruits variety. However, if ham and cheese, tuna or vege sounds good to you, I’ve no doubt that those are equally delicious. They have quite a variety for sale, all displayed nicely outside the shop in plastic replicas.
The ambiance in this shop is edgy yet relaxing, with ample room for diners to leisurely enjoy their purchases. It’s also decidedly Japanese with Japanese music streaming in over head, and one of their two TVs sporting NHK (Japanese Broadcasting).
The only fault I found to the place was the amount of time it took them to make a crêpe. Perhaps they were understaffed, or the clerk was new, but either way it felt like it took a good seven minutes to turn out a crêpe that should really be ready in under five. Yet, as I wasn’t in much of a hurry and was pretty stoked about everything I saw in the place, I could easily overlook that shortcoming.

My friend and I had been intrigued by the display of fake crepes in the front window for months, so last night, we finally headed over there to check it out. What a waste of money.
Hardly anything looked appetizing. A cheese burger crêpe? Really? Why not just go to a burger joint? A pizza crêpe? Just go to a pizza place.
I’m sure the dessert crepes could have been good, but the dinner crepes were so unappetizing and such a disappointment that I won’t be returning here to check them out.
Save your money. Go to Crepeville.

My little child-​like co-​worker took me here after work one night, and i felt very uncomfortable! I didnt belong, there was people there that i see wasnt on my level. Not being mean, i feel like i was too ghetto to be in such a innocent environment. Well, after a few more trips back to crêpe house. i stopped thinking crazy and sat with the nerds, geeks, etc and enjoyed my strawberry banana nutella crêpe.
My bf even liked the décor, its simple and cute! I love the outfits the server girls wear, its sexy and cute. but not too much.

Japanese Crepes, till 11pm on a sunday is madness and the prices are really good, most places in LA charge a minimum of 5 bucks for one.
the staff is really friendly and i dig the décor, think pink berry but less commercial, they told me a guy came out from japan to draw the mural along the wall which is pretty sick. I will be back.

This is a spot that you’d find in many places in socal since in socal there’s larger Asian enclaves. That said, this place seems to cater to the Asian lifestyle of eating. It is similar to places like Genki Living in socal.
You can never really go wrong with good desserts and a fun setting for people to enjoy the desserts in. The interior is artsy and unique. The uniforms for the females enhance the experience of being in an Asian dessert spot.
The Gelato is bomb. I like the vanilla bean. When I was there, I had something with red bean, green tea gelato, and rice balls. It was pretty good but I forgot what it was called. My friend had the rare cheesecake and said it was good. I want to try that eventually.
I also want to eventually try the cheeseburger crêpe and the German-​something crêpe. They sound weird and I am attracted to that weirdness.
If you want to be safe, just get a gelato crêpe. Maybe with some red bead, yum.
The drawing on the walls are pretty cool. I think just a black Sharpie was used.
One cool thing is that they have Rock Band available for play.
I’ve never played Rock Band in the middle of a restaurant though. That was pretty cool since they had wireless guitars and drums. They said that they were looking for a wireless mic for the game. Wonder when that will come.
I’ll come back here. Good atmosphere and good desserts.

Not only does the décor kind of grate on me, the fake display crepes especially, but I can’t help but feel bad for the poor servers. Take a look at those outfits. Imagine if you actually had to work, wearing an outfit like that. Every day. In public. I can’t imagine what they must have to put up with.
I would overlook it if the food was any good, but sadly the little Japanese maids can’t seem to put together a decent tasting crêpe. It was a somewhat creepy, and entirely uninspiring experience.

My good friend and I decided to try this place today for my birthday lunch. Nice choice!
The atmosphere of the restaurant is very modern and hip. There’s a cool mural across the walls with a sort of farm theme. I know weird huh? However with the contrast of the simple black lines against the rather white walls, the mural was actually really interesting. Then there are the bright green and pink accent walls to go along with the mod furniture which added to the stylishness of the restaurant.
Since it was lunchtime we both started off with some savory warm crepes. I had the mushroom pizza crêpe and my friend had the ham and cheddar cheese crêpe. The pizza one was yummy. It was like eating a very light crust calzone with a good amount of filling in it. My friend thought her crêpe was tasty as well.
Finally we decided to move onto dessert. YUMMY GELATO!!! No frozen yogurt for us! My mango and her green tea totally hit the spot! We really wanted the thai tea but they had just ran out. Darn! We’ll just have to go back there next week I suppose.
Did I mention that you can play the Wii there? It’s first come first serve but awesome!

For the record, I’d like to clear up some misconceptions. I don’t work here, but I do know a few things about the style of Japanese crepes. The crepes titled «cold dessert crepes» also mean that not only are the insides cold, the crêpe itself is cold as well. That is the style of the crêpe. The «hot dessert crepes» are the ones that have the freshly cooked crêpe. The reviews complaining about the fact that the crêpe is cold did not understand the style of a cold dessert crêpe. If you’re used to eating at Crepeville, please understand that this is a different style. This place is, however, similar to other Asian crepes, kinda like Q-​Cup. But again, not exactly the same.
I personally like the texture of these crepes better than the crepes at Crepeville. The dessert crepes are really good; I haven’t had any of the savory crepes yet. But yea. yummy. :)
The décor inside is really really cute! The service is awesome; they really try to preserve the Japanese nature of the café, including the manner with which they serve you, down to the way they hand you your credit card/​cash. This attention to detail is much appreciated. :)
I’m just sad that they opened after I graduated from UCD, so I’m not around much anymore. :(But every time I’m in the area, I always stop in.

So, I’ve been wanting to eat here since it opened… finally got the chance last night!
Got the hot dessert crêpe: almond choco with espresso bean gelato. Now, although very very yummy, I was quite confused as to how I eat the crêpe w/​the gelato in there. Sure, they gave me the lil flat edged spoon… but it was kinda hard once i got towards the bottom since it was kinda melty. Perhaps I shouldnt have gotten the hot crêpe, but whatever!
The crêpe was tasty and the filling was yummy. the gelato was really good. I wouldn’t say it’s better than ice krimski but it’s a nice lil thing to add (for an extra $ 1.50) to the crêpe since the filling isn’t too much.
Price wise, the crêpe came out to ~$ 4.50…which I thought was kinda pricey for what you get… oh well, this crêpe was shared between two but i could have certainly eaten the entire thing myself. hehe.
Yummy crêpe. Reasonably priced. Takes credit card! Clean inside. Friendly employees. Nice TV. Parking (in theatre garage across the street).

Having been to Japan and eating Crêpe there, I think this place is pretty close. Soft, moist crepes with fruit toppings is quite common there (i wouldn’t be surprised if this place is a chain in Japan). Like the real japanese music.

I’ve been dying to try this place since I heard about it, having had Japanese crepes in Japan. We ordered cold Tuna and Egg, German Potato, Teriyaki chicken, and jumbo mix. All of us enjoyed our crepes, but it wasn’t very filling. The sizes are about half of what you would get at Crepeville. In a way it’s good because American food sizes are always too big anyway.
We ended up ordering two more dessert crepes — strawberry, banana, chocolate and apple, cinnamon. Yum, delicious!
I especially liked their crepes, and could have ordered a couple plain crepes to chow down on.
Service was somewhat slow, but they acknowledged it and apologized.

Are these Japanese-​themed creperies going to take the place of the frozen yogurt fad? If so, I would definitely welcome it!
I have always been a fan of dessert crepes, so this place is going to be a must for me when I visit Davis. They also offer hot crepes, Italian sodas, coffee, and gelatto.
However, for the price of about $ 4 – 5 bucks for a crêpe, I’d like my baby to be a bit filled up with the goodies. Needless to say, the filling of my crêpe felt a little flat (refer to picture) compared to the place I used to get my crêpe-​fix for about the same price (AND it came with a big hunk of ice cream!).
Still, the concept of it is interesting with some of the employees dressed in french maid outfits and Japanese music playing. I’d definitely come here again.

2.5 stars because the crepes are soggy, even though they make it fresh in front of you. The filling is good though. i had the Cinnamon Apple and it tastes like apple pie! It’s like 4^th of July all over again =)
This place just opened less than a week ago, so I’m pretty sure it will get better. Oh, the interior is very cute. The colours remind me of a watermelon.
Crêpe House isn’t nasty, but there’s room for improvement!
