Hallmark Inn

I would give 10 stars if I could. This review is long overdue. Last summer we were evacuated from our Winters home due to the Wragg Fire. While the Red Cross could not have been more helpful and comforting, sleeping was really difficult, especially for our elderly mother-​in-​law, who is 90. The next day someone lets us know The Hallmark in Davis is giving free rooms to evacuees, so we called and they could not have been more gracious. We rushed over and were given keys to two beautiful rooms and slept like babies. The next morning we enjoyed that wonderful free breakfast of nourishing oatmeal. We kept waiting for a catch but there was none. Just a nice bunch of people looking to help in any way they can. Thank you, that kindness meant so much! By the way our house was saved as all were in Winters. Firemen are my heroes too!

We stayed here for a mini reunion with some high school. The rooms were extremely clean and spacious and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The restraint attach to the hotel is also wonderful. This is the place to stay in Davis.

While the stay itself is good, great location and usage of bikes; I feel the staff is now just phoning it in-​borderline rude.
It used be very professional and cheerful but it now affects the overall experience with unprofessional disposition by front desk girls upon checking in, unnecessary!
Could it kill front desk staffs and the restaurant staff to actually be happy and cheerful? The maintenance is always nice and accommodating and general manager when there and out front is always inviting.

I stay here at least every other month and is normally rate it at 3 – 4 stars. It’s a decent place with a free drink at night and pretty good breakfast. What caused me
To write a review though is my experience this trip. Unfortunately I got food poisoning from a local restaurant and the symptoms hit hard last night. At 5 when I finally called to ask for seven up they immediately brought it to me. Then at 8 when k realized how bad it was, I contacted the front desk. Cassidy went out of her way to help me find what doctors/​clinic I could go to with my insurance. She even offered to call a cab. They’re working with me on a late check out so I can rest up as much as possible after the doctors visit before driving home. The funny thing was after I got back from the doctor, my key wasn’t working. Even though I had to sit outside my room for a quit moment while they let me in. They were so kind. Even the maintenance guys who had to fix the door while I was sick were so kind and understanding. I feel well taken care of. Thank you!

If you are wanting to get actual sleep here, I would suggest staying somewhere else. The only thing that could have made my room louder would have been a pack of howling wolves, a trumpet player, fireworks, and half a dozen crying babies under my bed.
Seriously, the train runs by on tracks very close to the rooms — your bed actually shakes. Drunk college kids walk from nearby bars through the parking lots yelling and laughing until 3 am, and apparently garbage day is every day from 0630 – 0830 with loud trucks banging and beeping nearby.
The room had a very funky smell and is outdated, especially for the price of 275.00 for two nights.
The staff was not overly friendly and the housekeepers wouldn’t even smile back or say hi. They started working in the halls early in the morning and you could hear them laughing and talking very loudly. I got a phantom knock on my door early in the morning and when I answered the housekeeper just looked at me like she didn’t know what was going on and turned her back and kept working.
I had to call maintenance up to get my heater working. Very difficult thermostat to get to work.
The balconies are all connected so it felt very unsafe as someone can walk to your back sliding door by simply walking to it. This means curtains stay closed all the time and I didn’t feel Comfortable opening slider for fresh air.
I did appreciate the 8.50 voucher they give you for breakfast at their little café but wish it was open a little later for those who like to sleep in.
They provide Bee Kind products which I love.
The location is what makes this place. It is close to everything downtown and just across the street is a movie theater. TONS of restaurants and shopping super close.

I like that you can find little shops, park and food in walking distance. The hotel is nice and you get a free beer or wine between 6−7pm. Also, up to $ 17 for breakfast for 2.
Beds and pillows are ok. Our window was facing the theater and it was a bit loud. The train is right next to the hotel. It’s not gonna wake you up but if you’re sensitive to sounds while you sleep it might. Woke me up. Goes by pretty often 3 times between 5:30−7 am.

I’ll keep this short and sweet:
Pluses:
1) friendly helpful staff
2) one free beer /​wine per person.
3) free/​partly free breakfast (free up to $ 8.50)
Minuses:
1) DISGUSTING carpet in our room (room 158). Our feet (all three of us) became black from walking on it for just minutes. Taking off socks, walking around the room, getting into shower leaves black smears all over the bath. The carpets feel greasy, look dull and dirty and are downright nasty. UGH. YUCK. It is clear that these haven’t been steam cleaned in many years. If you want to run a hotel and charge people money for it, you need to properly clean the carpets from time to time.
2) Dated rooms
3) No safe in room
4) Sink faucet totally funky, and hard to operate.
We will never return here for the dirty carpet reason above. Run a hotel properly or don’t be in the hotel business.

A charming hotel. Double-​paned glass to keep out the sounds of the nearby trains. A giraffe statue outside my window. What more could a guy ask for?
Oh… an $ 8.50 breakfast voucher. That was a nice, complimentary touch. And a free drink at the bar! That was a cool perk.
Overall, I was satisfied with my stay here. Nothing went wrong, my bed was comfortable, the café food was good… and the train didn’t wake me up. :-)

I love staying at this hotel. It’s a non smoking hotel and no pets are allowed. Breakfast was outstanding, beds are comfortable. They provide shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, shower gel, cotton buds and swabs, shower caps (which were excellent quality to be disposable). You can hear the train nearby but they provide earplugs just in case. I used them, my husband did not. The staff is friendly and the hotel lobby looks like an art gallery. The location is superb, in the heart of Davis. Next to the hotel is a wine tasting room and a wonderful ice cream shop. This is the way all hotels should be. This kind of places is very hard to find. A must if you visit Davis, CA.

we stayed in plenty hotels throughout out our vacation, but this one stood out as the best. They had the great personal touches that no other hotel had; a quiet AC, mood lighting, shower caps, earplugs, qtips, cotton balls etc. The location is also in the middle of everything. TIP: I did read the reviews here and told the agent to get me a room away from the train tracks and they gave me exactly what i requested. The BK coupons for the café felt like I ate out and the food was awesome way to start a day. Complementary bicycles, thumbs up!

Nice hotel in a great location, however it’s right next to the railroad tracks and the freight trains passing kept me up all night with noise & my bed shaking. I was here for business and got really bad sleep while here. When I told the front desk, they agreed that the noise had been bad but didn’t do anything to compensate for my lack of sleep. At the bare bones, a hotel needs to be somewhere to sleep at night… I definitely did not get that here.

Check in was a breeze, it took less than 10 minutes. I was booked for an entire week so I was pleased to see that they offer complimentary Wi-​Fi, 1 HH drink per room per night during 4−7pm, complimentary breakfast at the café downstairs, and free overnight parking.
After inspecting my room, I was pleased with what I saw, but it was pretty expensive for what you get all things considered– even being downtown ($ 150/​night).
Here is my big ol’ caveat: If you’re sensitive to sound and movement, I don’t know if I would recommend a stay. You are right in the heart of downtown, and only a street away from the train that runs through Davis. I definitely heard the train throughout the day/​night and at one point my room even vibrated/​shook from the train going by. This was especially annoying in the wee hours (5−6am). They do place ear plugs by the night stand which is a nice gesture, and while I do like the ambient noise of the train running down the tracks the honking & whistling when the train pulled in every few hours is what really bothered me and made it difficult to sleep.
I didn’t even think about the train when I booked my stay at the Hallmark, and even still it shouldn’t have been a problem. The sad fact though, is that it was. The windows/​doors to the rooms do not seem double paned, so lots of noises really seemed to be an issue for me.
You can’t really beat the downtown location, so if you aren’t sensitive to sound definitely consider your stay at the Hallmark.

Nice big room. Everything clean and comfortable. Very helpful staff. Very nice made to order breakfast included with room. Beautiful lobby. I borrowed one of their bikes for the day so I could do part of the Davis bike path with my student. Everything in downtown or campus within walking distance, which is a HUGE plus when coming to visit Davis. You have to eat in downtown Davis and if you’d like to enjoy an adult beverage, you can just walk back to this hotel afterwards.
Near the train station, so you can hear them, but they did not waken us. We were on the F street side of the building.
Really nice pool area and free drink each evening, which could be taken poolside.

The room was actually quite nice. It was bad luck that we chose it tho. I was so tired! My truck broke down late so we had to stay in Davis. Would have been better at a motel 6 or ANYWHERE not right next to the train station. ALL NIGHT long the train was
Coming and going. I couldn’t even hear the train it was the whistle that woke me up… every time. Worst nights sleep of my life. We even asked for the quiet area ya right!!! Then once the cleaning ladies started at 7am going in and out of rooms, not one time did they close the door gently. SLAM. Every. Single. Time. All morning long. Sheesh. Going to take a nap now.

My friends, a couple from Japan, spent two nights here last week and had a wonderful time. The location is great, the staff is great, the price was more than reasonable.
This is an AMTRAK traveler’s paradise!

When I was little, I would stay here while my parents traveled to Davis for conferences. It used to be Ramada Inn.
As a grown up, I’ve stayed here too. Their rooms are pretty clean and quiet. I really like how it is situated in the heart of downtown where you can easily walk to all the local eateries or go see a movie if you’re looking to pass some time.
Their bathroom products are really nice too. I think the product line is called Bee something. It is made out of all natural products. In the mornings, their breakfast is pretty good. I like that the breakfast lounge gets converted to a study or hang out location in the afternoons. They also offer you coffee too in the lobby. I highly recommend coming here.

Pros:
Decent, clean room with reasonable amenities for the price
Responsive and friendly maintenance (Couldn’t get my computer to connect via our TV’s HDMI, but they figured it out. Had to disconnect the cable TV first, and then it recognized the HDMI)
Cons:
Disclaimer, I am a light sleeper. So if you’re average to heavy, your experience may be much better than mine.
Only one thing, but it was very significant. The noise. I even requested their «quiet zone» in advance, and was told I would be getting such a room, so I can only imagine that this is the quietest area available. I couldn’t sleep. The train noise was very apparent, and it woke me up every time it came by. Apparently trash day is Fridays, because Friday morning I constantly heard what sounded like dump trucks… at least a couple separate dump trucks at different times (but possibly three), stopping and emptying trash and moving on. At one point, I heard music blasting from either another room or a car outside, and it went on for about 20 minutes. I was too tired to get out of bed to see exactly where it was coming from.
In short, I had just come in from a long trip, already going on lack of sleep, only to experience one of the worst nights of sleep I’ve had in years. Upon check out, I planned to ask the front counter if I had indeed been placed in the quiet zone that I requested, but the opportunity never came up, because the person at the front desk didn’t even bother asking me how my stay went.
I won’t be back to the Hallmark Inn. I really wanted to give more stars because of the help from maintenance, but I just can’t do it in good conscience with how horrible my rest was.

So I got into UC Davis (applause), and in the midst of the excitement I thought I should take a spur of the moment road trip to check out the town. I checked out some deals on
, and called the actual hotels to compare rates. The promotions offered by the hotels couldn’t compete with those online so I booked a room for one night through
.
We take the trip from Los Angeles to Davis, and we are extremely surprised to find such a nice hotel for the price we paid. It really was beautiful, and the rooms weren’t bad at all. Nothing to complain about there.
It’s really the events that followed that bother me. I go to pay my AMEX, and notice two charges (one from
, and another for $ 85 from hallmark inn). I immediately call Hallmark Inn, and nobody picks up. So I wait an hour or so and give it another try. This time I speak with someone who tells me they have no idea why it was charged, but if I want something done I need to speak with her supervisor. I’m fine with that, but then she tells me he is out of the office at the moment. I ask for a better time to call back to speak to him, and she says she can only transfer me to his voicemail (not answering my question). I get transferred, and leave a clear message with name, number, etc. I wait a few days before realizing I’ve heard nothing back.
I give it another try. Same thing happens. Supervisor is out, and I need to leave a voicemail. I wait another couple of days, and still receive NO phone call. I give it one last shot, and explain to the woman on the phone the lack of response I’ve received. She tells me all she can do is transfer me back to the voicemail! I hang up, and call my credit card company to handle the charge. Weeks later I get an email saying my account has been credited because the hotel has NOT RESPONDED.
Don’t stay here, and if you do use a credit card that will stand up against any charges they attempt to apply to your account.

The Hallmark is the most convenient Hotel in Davis. It’s located right in downtown Davis. They did recently remodeled the Lobby. As far as the rooms are concerned they are clean but dated. Each room has a small Flat screen TV mounted on the wall. This recent stay the Hotel was completely sold out that meant the parking was packed, the breakfast and happy hour was over whelmed with people. At 8:30 am there was not enough hot water to take a shower.
Tips on the staying at the Hallmark Inn:
Ask for a room that does not face the railroad tracks.
There are usually special rates for certain organizations and affiliations.
Breakfast is included.

While I think this inn potentially deserves 3.25 stars, the lack of cleanliness of our room drops it down to two.
There aren’t very many hotels to choose from in Davis, and the Hallmark Inn offers many free superb amenities and a central location. It is difficult to resist free wi-​fi, a free cocktail per guest (not room), free spread of daily breakfast, ample parking (there is an underground garage), and free bike rentals. Pricing is moderate given the amenities and central location — the inn is directly downtown and many restaurants are within walking distance (including a bar to the rear). The rooms were large and spacious with fridges and microwaves in each, an actual mirrored door closet, and balcony with seating. The bed was comfortable and large though the pillows were kind of lumpy. While I thought that a coffee maker in the bathroom was odd (and kind of gross), the bath towels were surprisingly plusher than expected. The Beekind bath amenities made by Gilchrist & Soames was a nice touch.
However, I did find the actual grounds to be kind of dilapidated — there was some construction going on with the walkways and to access our building required a bit of walking. The elevator was slow and no permit was displayed (but is kept on file). The room was kind of dusty in the corners and along the wall edges. We were in room #264 and we could hear just about everything going on outside in the hallways, hear murmuring from neighboring rooms, hear people walking around in the room above, and hear the train in the distance. If a neighbor had wanted to get some intimacy on, I get the feeling that it would have been heard.
Okay, so the thing that really killed it for me was that I found a number of smallish black hairs all over the white coverlet on the bed, a hair on the sink behind the faucet, AND a freaking pube in the corner of the tub!!! That was incredibly disgusting to me. This was immediately upon check-​in and I felt for the duration of our brief stay that the room wasn’t as clean as it should have been. As we were only in town for a wedding, I didn’t feel the need to switch it up (given that three other weddings had blocks at the Hallmark Inn). Therefore I carefully inspected the bath towels before using them.
I’m not sure why I would really need to stay in Davis again, but I would probably do more research as the Hallmark Inn would not be my immediate first choice.
