Specialties
The Pence Gallery is a nonprofit art organization that showcases the work of local and regional artists. We display 12 exhibits annually of work in all media, and offer talks, workshops, and films to engage people in talking and learning about art. Children’s programs for school groups and families are also available. Our gift shop is full of hand-crafted items, primarily by local artists, and proceeds go to support the gallery and the artists themselves. Our free receptions are from 6 – 9 PM every second Friday of the month, when wine, food, and conversation make the Gallery a great place to be.
History
Established in 1975.
Dr. Joe Pence, Davis dentist, gave the land and original building at 212 D Street to the City of Davis, in the hopes of dedicating it to the community. A group of artists and local residents (including Robert Arneson, famed ceramicist), petitioned the City for its use as a nonprofit art gallery. Central to its mission was educating the community through art exhibits and programs for children. The Pence Gallery Association established a new Gallery on the same grounds, which opened in 2005. This created three gallery spaces, including one used as an art classroom, a full kitchen, and gift shop area. While the Gallery receives no funding from the City of Davis, it is located on land owned by the city. The Association owns the building and covers all costs on its maintenance. The Gallery is run by a volunteer Board of Directors, a Director/Curator, Assistant Director, and Gallery Assistant. Volunteer opportunities are available.
