H&R Block

I engaged H&R Block to do two things: 1) correctly file my tax forms; 2) provide me with expert tax advice to help minimize my taxes. They assigned their most senior person in that office who was supposed to be an «Enrolled Agent».
They failed to file the forms appropriately (didn’t provide other state forms to state of CO), which caused the State of Colorado to deny my refund, plus take many many months to investigate. Even though I purchased «audit defense», H&R would not assist in the investigation AT ALL. Then after CO determined H&R paperwork error, they gave me my refund minus $ 600 (apparently some sort of penalty fee).
H&R did not pay the penalty fee, and acted like they didn’t even know me each time I tried to speak with them about it. As far as advice, their «Enrolled Agent» never even tried to provide any advice. Thanks H&R «do nothings»!
Do yourself a favor… get someone who knows how to prepare taxes to file your forms… NEVER TRUST H&R BLOCK… they are thieves and swindlers with no expertise in their claimed field!

I recently moved to Colorado from California, so I had to find a new source for tax preparation. There is an h&r block office close to my new house, so I thought I would give them a try.
I am self employed and have a very simple tax situation– nothing out if the ordinary. The tax advisor that I worked with was absolutely incompetent and has no place working as a tax advisor. She was not able to complete my tax filing without constantly bringing a supervisor over for assistance, and did not even know how to use the software on the computer. After being told the filing would take 30 minutes, I left the store over 2 hours later completely lacking any confidence that my taxes were filed correctly. H&r block needs to do a much better job hiring competent professionals.
On top of my dissatisfaction with the employees, I feel completely ripped off by the price. I paid nearly $ 600 for a basic filing. I had paid less than $ 200 for the same filing last year with another firm (with whom I feel much more confident with).
I am overall completely dissatisfied with my entire experience. I would never recommend H&R block to anyone, and I will certainly never use them again in the future.

I went to H&R Block at the end of the 2012 tax season armed with all my info from 2009 – 2012. I hadn’t filed taxes in a few years, so there were four years to complete. They started with my 2012 tax year, then went back and did 2009 – 2011. I paid well over $ 200 per year. I was in the process of buying a house and needed to get these done.
After sending all my taxes in, I tried closing on my dream house. They said I couldn’t because my taxes weren’t complete for 2010 and 2011. As it turns out, my «tax professional» had sent the wrong forms in and I got both years returned. I couldn’t buy the house I initially wanted to buy.
I went back into H&R Block to get my money back. They said they’d be happy to do so but I had to give them the receipts. I asked if they couldn’t look it up. They said no, which seems ridiculous to me.
I couldn’t make it back down there until tax season this year. My intention was to get my money back and give them a chance to redeem themselves. Well, I had my receipts but this new person said that my refund term had expired and I couldn’t get my money back. He did so AFTER doing my taxes. Now I have to pay ANOTHER $ 300!!!
I am livid. They clearly say in their commercials if they make a mistake, your tax returns are free. Well, they don’t stand by their own policies and they lie to their customers.
I’d have been better off doing my own taxes.

I had to file an amended return after having submitted taxes online through H and R Block’s online form. Naturally, I went in to an H and R Block location to perform what should have been a very simple task.
I called and they assured me that it would only cost $ 99 for said service.
So I went in and the guy who helped me was very nice, but forgetful and kept referring to the wrong tax year when documenting my stuff. Just a teeny bit scary. Sir, we are talking about calendar year *2009*. Please block out 2010. Please.
Anywho. There is no integration between the internal systems at H and R Block and their web tool. In fact, had they attempted to import my web-​based forms in to their tool, they would have lost all my data. Awesome. So he had to manually re-​enter all my tax data to get to the point where he could make even a minor amendment. (That’s right, 2009, you’re doing great)
So, my asbent-​minded accountant did manage to complete my amended return. Then presented me with a bill in excess of $ 500. Even an H and R accountant knows that $ 500 is greater than $ 99. But I had to have my return in the mail that day. He deducted the money that I had already spent submitting my forms online and I ended up spending around $ 235 when all was said and done.
I’d say go here if you’re the type that likes to take risk. Real risk. Not like bungee jumping off a bridge, that’s kid’s stuff. Risk like the kind that can get you you audited or land you in jail.

I dread April 15^th. I hate doing taxes. For me, it doesn’t get any better than paying someone else to do it for you. I don’t want to learn to do my own taxes, I just want to hand them over to someone and have them deal with that headache for me. This is why I like H & R Block. I can run in, hand them all my piles of papers and then run away. In a few hours, they give me a call and generally I just have to pop back in and sign a few things.
This location is even open all year long so if you have questions about your return after April 15^th, you can ask them. This was very useful for us last year when we filed for an extension, but then decided to have them prepare our return for us. I don’t mind paying for this type of service. They seem to find us more money than I’d even know to look for.
I especially love that they don’t shame me for a lack of mathematical skillz.
