Sobo 151 Czech Bar & Grill

I always think it’s funny when people assume that when going to a clearly non-​American run/​focused bar they think that they should be experiencing something like a Chili’s. Czech beers are supposed to be poured with two inches of head. Service isn’t supposed to be lighting fast. Not everything will be spit-​shiny clean.
That being said, I love Sobo 151. When you’re in need of booze and grandma-​style Eastern Euro food, while ABBA plays constantly (classic) and English is rarely heard; they more than fit the bill. Went for lunch today and the bartender Oko was great. Poured my drink (s) nice and strong, offered the special and chatted with me throughout. Win.
Food was great as always. Goulash isn’t quite my grandmas, but hey, she’s Austrian and maybe the flavors aren’t supposed to be the same. And my grandma doesn’t serve double gin and tonics for $ 3 on Thursdays.

One of my favorite lunch spots. The lunch specials are always amazing, the staff is super friendly (often times the owner will be serving at lunch as well)…and the place is never busy for lunch.

I don’t remember going here, but who am I to argue with Unilocal’s data mining? And to be fair, I was sober maybe only 20% of my time spent in Dallas so it’s entirely possible I was here. Not seeing anything on my account history, but my buddy Dave was paying for a lot of my drinks. Dave’s a cool dude, and it was nice to visit him in his new home.

Sobo 151 is a hockey bar that serves food. The interior is welcoming, bright and screams HOCKEY! The hockey stick shaft rub rail is a cool touch.
It seemed that the majority of parking was on the street and there was also a small lot on Maple (I think). But I did not feel comfortable squeezing my vehicle in that lot. I ended up parking about two blocks away. No biggie.
The front has a large bar, is filled with adequate number of tables and a very huge TV. There are some smaller tvs as well. The back, where we opted to park our selves, was large with a smattering of smaller high top tables and some TV’s. The back is dominated by three pool tables. This is a lively bar and has a great positive vibe.
Our server was very nice, smiled and was great. She apologized a handful of times because, I guess she thought that she was slow at bringing this or that or didn’t stop by enough. However, I did not notice any of this. I thought she was great.
I chose this place because of the Czech food. I grew up eating this type of food and I make it myself. I enjoy sampling the food at these type of places. There are a handful of variations on Eastern European dishes and I’m definitely not a snob about any of it.
Overall, the food was ok. Fyi, when they say dumplings come with your meal, they mean about a quarter of a loaf of bread. They are not technically dumplings. Bread and dumplings are made with just about the same ingredients but «cooked» differently. I’m not gonna lie, I was kinda disappointed. But I could sop up the gravy with the bread. The food was comforting and filling. I opted for goulash which I honestly do not make, ever. The meat was tender but the gravy I did not like all that much. The flavor did not appeal to me. My son chose chicken paprikas and he seemed to enjoy it. However, he did make sure to mention that MY chicken paprikas is better. Damn straight, boy! My husband ordered pickled sausage and soup which came with rye bread. He thought it was all fairly decent.
The Czech beer was wonderful. I had not tried any of the beers offered until I came here. They were really good.
If I lived up in Denver I would come here, mainly to watch hockey, not for the food.. .. which was not bad. I just did not enjoy the food as much as I’d hoped.

Great Green chili Cheese fries, good service, and a great wine selection! If you want fine dishes, try to visit this place. You won’t regret for giving this place a try. The staff was very particular to all the important details and knowledgeable enough in all matters.

My wife is first generation CZ to this country. We have spent a minimum of 17 days in Prague and Central Bohemia every year since 1991. We own a flat in Prague and a chata (small house) in Sazava on the banks of the Sazava river. We know Czech city and country cuisines. We are also family friends with two restaurants in Prague and Strabina Skalitce, so we eat out there a lot.
This place is pretty good for an ex-​pat hangout, actually it is pretty faithful to what you find in CZ with the exception of being more high tech. No one on staff spoke CZ this day though. Wasted my CZ language skills :-) .
Waitress made usual recommendations, but I settled for the usual working man’s CZ meal; Goulas and Bread Dumplings with a side of Red Cabbage. No Shopski Salad on the menu, also no beer cheese or Topinky either.
The cabbage was spot on as what you would receive at most any pub or restaurant in the CZR. There was a bit of wine finish that was most appropriate. The beef in the Goulas was absolutely perfectly braised. Fork fall apart and the bread dumplings were light, not too dense and boiled/​sliced correctly. They do not do the brambury (potato) version here.
The gravy of the Goulas was very good by US standards, but it lacked the black pepper and heavy onion notes I am accustomed to when eating the CZ’s local versions. It was still very good and did not taste as if it were sitting in a stock pot all day getting burnt and sour. It also seemed to be missing the marjoram herb, instead they opted for what tasted like chopped parsley instead.
Pivo is pivo here without the 10* taps like in the CZR.
For the Metro Denver area… You are lucky to have this place.

Everything is pretty much the same as my first review, except I have discovered the most awesome dish in the world: Sobo 151’s Czech Garlic Dip. If you haven’t tried it, you are missing out. Stop being a loser! Go to Sobo’s now to order this dish.
Note: Don’t plan on kissing anyone for the rest of the night. The garlicky goodness of this dish will totally make up for it, though.

The Czech food is fantastic and their specials are definitely worth a look. The kielbasa is without compare and by far the best I’ve ever had. The staff is friendly and makes an effort to make you feel at home. The pool is on point and this is really the place to test your skills. Overall it’s a laid back bar with no pretensions and the place to go for unique food with fantastic people and simple drinks.

I had roasted duck, it was excellent, I didn’t have one like this for a while. Definitely coming back for some more Czech food and beer.

This place is the typical dive bar but it’s got a great local crowd. There is karaōke on Saturdays at 9:30 which is free and loads of fun. The staff is so friendly they will even join you for a round of karaōke. Drinks are average, good variety on tap.

I’ve always been curious about Sobo since moving to Denver about 2 ½ years ago. Continuously, I drive by and always say to myself, «I really need to try Sobo. It’s really a damn shame I live only a few blocks away and have yet to go.»
Then, finally, the day arrived where the ‘Sobo’ stars aligned and I biked my way over to a birthday at the Czech eatery and bar.
It’s definitely boasts a sports bar interior with numerous TVs streaming sports, and billiards in the back. I could foresee some fun nights here, especially surrounding a big game or late night shot-​taking. We did not partake in the sports side so much as the authentic Czech cuisine on the patio. For a robust Wednesday night birthday party of about 20, we had one kick ass server that didn’t miss a beat. Being a native of the Czech Republic she helped navigate us neophytes to Czech cuisine to discover a delicious Easter European meal we’d enjoy.
I eventually went the potato pancakes — essentially a delicious version of latke. Although I didn’t go the adventurous route, like the Goulash or the pickled Knackwurst, the pancakes were savory, delicious, and generous… definitely giving me the reason to return.

This place offers some awesome Czech beer and a mix of both Czech and American food. We decided to ignore the chicken wings and the such and only tried the Czech-​style dishes.
— The potato and herb pancakes were tasty but underseasoned even more my Russian-​likes-​everything-​underseasoned taste
— The cheese and salami plate had some awesome salted pickles on them. Sweet and sour, pretty great!
— The chicken paprika with dumplings had tender chicken and a decent sauce; the dumplings had a great texture
The server wasn’t super-​friendly, so it comes out as a middle-​of-​the-​pack place for me.

It’s not often that I mention a restaurant’s patrons in a review, but I have to say I was really impressed by the people who were here. Last night when we visited, we arrived early and waited on the patio for the rest of our people. All those who came out to smoke noticed us and positioned themselves on the other side of the patio. It was such a little thing, but I thought it was so very polite of them!
Anyway, on to the restaurant. The waitress did an incredible job of serving our large party outside. I cannot give high enough marks for the service. Not everyone ordered food, but I did: I had the pork schnitzel and shared hubs’s bratwurst. Both were SO good! I don’t have much experience with Eastern European food, so I’m not an expert on what might be «authentic», but everything I ate that evening was delicious and I would definitely go back for the food.
Honestly for us last night, the dining and drinking experience was totally secondary to the fact that we showed up to hang out with friends. From that standpoint, the evening was a great success. This is a great place to hang out and socialize.

One of my favorite sports bars in Colorado, Sobo 151 is an easygoing european joint on the very happening South Broadway. The food is excellent and the bartenders are some of the greatest, most decent people you’ll meet. Karaōke nights are always fun here, the pool hall is private and cheap, and the atmosphere is simply the best for watching soccer or hockey.

It’s been almost 5 years since I showed Sobo a little love so it is overdue. Honestly, pretty much just hit this place up at lunch and it’s normally quiet — I understand it can get pretty rowdy with larger crowds watching sports, shoot pool and singing karaōke in the evenings so I can’t comment on all of that but lunch is relaxing. Usually, the charming Czech import bartender is doing double duty as a waiter. He probably only sees us a couple of times a year but he has my Pilsner Urquell waiting for me before I’m even seated. I’m nothing if not predictable.
There is a whole roster of dependable bar food standards but for me the choice is between a number of their very good Czech/​Eastern European centric offerings. This last visit I (and the lady friend) both had their perfectly grilled veal brats, sauerkraut and house made potato salad. A friend who tagged along with us had the deep fried ham and cheese sandwich and wolfed it down — looked good but it should come with a health warning for sure. If you ask nicely the waiter will bring you a jar of their private stash of wonderful imported Czech mustard — perfect with the brats. They also have a daily homemade soup offering (chicken noodle today) but I am a fan of their sauerkraut soup in cooler weather. Today I was totally happy with brats and beer though. The brat plate was $ 11 — pretty reasonable considering the prices being charged in South Broadway’s hipster haunts these days.

Nice place. Good service. Haven’t been exposed to Czech food but seems close to German food? We ended up just snacking on chips, salsa, and onion rings. So we’ll have to try it again for a more extensive experience.

Authentic-​as-​hell Czech food, a great array of Czech and local beers to choose from, and staff that are cool as the other side of the pillow. The pool area is a bit ratty, but shit look who hangs out there haha.
Protip: Don’t go during a hockey game unless you *really* like hockey

I’d come back if friends want to go karaōke-​ing. But, would I come back just to hang out? Prolly not. Because… well. The bathroom in the front room was disgusting. Not just stinky and kinda dirty. FILTHY DIRTY GROSS GAG GAG GAG, my friend bleached her shoes when she got home kind of dirty.
We were there for 3 hours… and no one cleaned it up. I’m sorry, but if this is the bathroom the staff has to use, I don’t want to drink or eat anything out of this joint.
But the karaōke was more fun than I expected. So, there’s that. four stars for karaōke. 2 stars as a place where food and drink are served.

This place was very good! I came here with my European friend who said this is the best place to get Czech food (like I have much to compare it to).
We came in on a Wednesday night, after giving up on parking at wing night at pub on penn (cap hill sucks if you are in a car). I am so glad we checked this place out! There was plenty of parking and the place was very wide open. They also have pool tables here.
They have various specials every night but Wednesday they have rum & cokes, bartenders choice beer, & one other thing for only $ 3.
We had an appetizer of the garlic dip which was sooo good, but wow! So much garlic! Then I got the kielbasa, which was HUGE and delicious. My boyfriend got the schnitzel for $ 9 but for an extra slice of meat it is $ 12. I don’t know how anyone can order 2! These pieces of meat are gigantic! The people who came with us got wings (bumming that we missed wing night at pub on penn). So anyways, it is cool they have some American food here too.
Totally coming back! Highly Reccommend!

A Fun czech bar! If you have any friends that speak Czech bring them here and they’ll feel right at home. The wait staff is excellent and the bar owner is very nice too. Did I mention The food is awesome too. I’ve now had 3 things I can’t even pronounce but they’ve always been good. The potato cake appetizers are excellent for a starting dish & the czech beer on tap is an excellent choice for washing them down.
Con: Came here for a concert on a Saturday night: bar was understaffed and our food took about an hour so it was a little disappointing but overall a good experience.

Pretty authentic Czech food. Debated between 3 or 4 stars… I spend a considerable amount of time in the CR as most of my family lives there, and the food here definitely filled some of the voids of not having gramma’s cooking in awhile. Of course, nothing could ever compare to the magic she makes happen in the most bare-​bones kitchen, but Sobo tried.
The bramboraky (potato pancakes appetizer) taste very close to the ones you can pick up at a stand in any Czech town square, but the garlic toast was bad; it came on regular French bread (like the 99cent baguette you buy at the supermarket)… That’s not how we do it.
For entrees, we had a schnitzel (got a good vote), kielbasa (also liked), and pepper chicken AKA kure na paprice. The problem I had with the chicken was that I really enjoyed it at first, and then I realized I knew exactly what it tasted like — the kure na paprice mix that comes in a packet from Knorr. So disappointing. That’s like going to an Italian restaurant who will cook you the best pasta, then tasting Heinz on your spaghetti. Bummer. But I did enjoy it before coming to that realization. :)
Sobo has a very lively atmosphere, nice vibe — even if you’re not a sports fanatic, and limited parking. I’d say it’s worth a visit, especially for those not familiar with the cuisine. Take your tastebuds on a vacation.
