Dunsmuir Brewery Works

We had an amazing experience last night at Dunsmuir Brewery Works! We’re dark beer fans, and their stout was perfectly balanced and delicious. The food was also decadent and delicious. We’d recommend the mussels! But we’ll be back to try the elk burger, which sounded awesome as well. The live music gave the evening the perfect ambiance, and the warm and friendly conversation with the sweet couple that runs the place really rounded out an amazing evening, and the perfect end to a day up at the mountain.
Highly recommended!

Great burger and beer. Cute and fun ambiance. My husband did not enjoy his Rib eye… under cooked and bland mashed potatoes.

This quiet town holds several unexpected gems — this brewery being one of them. Friendly service. Great food with solid flavors, seasonal flavors, well-​combined tastes and notable beers. My pecan-​crusted red trout topped with garlic-​paprika butter with fried leeks, mashed potatoes, and butternut squash was delicious! Large portions, solid and delicate flavors combined. The six beer sampler had excellent variety with IPAs, imperial, stout, and barley wine. I wish this was located closer to the Bay Area! Definitely better than Gordon Biersch or Rock Bottom Brewery.
The food just takes a little while to finish but it’s well worth the wait in this relaxed town so make sure to order a drink to chill and just enjoy the ambience.

Staff over worked with 15 tables 2 waiters and a bar server it still took 45 minutes to get 6 samples and 3 growlers filled after choosing the beer, filling the growlers get the bill to find out it was $ 30 a growler. Knowing that I would have chosen different beer. Will not be back

Good beer, friendly staff, and the best pastrami Reuben ever.
Reuben was on toasted rye, with gooey melted cheese. Pastrami was tender, very flavorful, and fell-​apart like corned beef. Much better than the traditional sliced version, which I find to be a bit chewy and fatty.
Would give it a five star review, but the slaw that I selected as a side was pretty bland.
I will likely stop here on my next pass through the far-​north of California.

The food and beer is great here, and I don’t generally like beer! The Liquid Sunshine (a summer offer) is the best if you are like me about the taste of most beers. They often have great music.

On a scale of 1 – 5 the food is a 6.
I live in Redding and don’t hesitate to drive 45 minutes just to eat there a couple times a year. And nearly every chance I get to eat there when I’m in the area I do (commonly after some outdoor recreation).
Definitely get the beer cheese bread and hot wing appetizers.
Their beers are great. They usually have a half dozen on tap, a mix of their product and other north state breweries.
The setting is great, a quaint, smaller building with a nice outdoor patio (sometimes with live music).
So why I am not giving it 5 stars? Unfortunately the place always seems one waitress short. And due to the smaller sized kitchen, the food can take a while to prep, and consequently arrive. So DEFINITELY get an appetizer.
If you’re looking to get in and have your meal and leave, might want to wait til your next trip when you have more time.
But this place is the perfect place to relax, have a beer and great food when you’re not pressed for time.

This place is the best brewery in the area!
The beer is the best, and their food is excellent. The vibe is always great, and the service very friendly. I Suppose the most important factors here are, the beer is the best, and The water it’s made with is the best. I love the bomber mini growler refill, perfect for the midnight train ride to SF!

Four stars for a great meal and fun dining experience. We ordered chicken sandwiches and they were fantastic. The chicken wasn’t overcooked and the seasoning was just right. The roll was soft and fresh. I had their coleslaw side and this was the highlight of the meal. It was sweet, with some raisins, but not so sweet that it was overpowering. Go there for their coleslaw. Stop reading and go now.
The setting itself is a bit divey but this isn’t a problem if you’re going for great food. There was a live band and we were told they have bands Thursday through Saturday nights. They were an older bunch of guys and sounded fine. One of the staff was cooking what looked like a beautiful burger on an outside grill, so I’ll have to check out their burgers next time we go back.
Our waitress was nice, friendly and quick to offer suggestions about their menu and sights around town.
Their beers were OK. I was a bit let down, since I ordered a flight. The best of show was their porter, which was very good. I would try them again but was initially underwhelmed by their beers.

I sampled most of the beers … they were all quite good, but they had been having equipment problems, so their selection was pretty limited.
I would gladly go back to have another round though.
Their Salmon BLT was absolutely delicious though. It sounds like a very basic sandwich … but its one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had.

This place is so damn cool it makes me want to quit my job, move to rural NorCal, and build a tiny house.
This town is tiny and adorable while somehow still managing to not be hideously touristy. Perhaps it’s the fact that it’s far for major population centers in both Oregon and California.
I wouldn’t have even noticed this town with the Scottish (assuming) name if it weren’t for the fact that I like to eat good food and drink good beer after I climb.
Dunsmuir is located pretty close to Castle Crags State Park which is a wonderful place to rock climb impressive granite spires (and hike too!) and a horribly, spirit-​crushingly, expensive place to camp. You may as well get a hotel it’s so expensive. I’m only mildly exaggerating. *insert damning comment about California over-​population here*
Anyway the food here would be notable if it were in a city like Portland. It’s not just «good for a small town in the middle of nowhere”-good. It’s good. I had a burger that was incredibly gourmet and not-​at-​all pedestrian (sorry that sounds like a back-​handed compliment, that’s not at all what I mean). It seems like you can phone-​it-​in on burger construction and folks will still rave about your place having «the best burgers» (n-​n-​Outiay), but here they don’t.
Everything on the menu looked local, unique, and hand-​crafted.
The beer was also very good.
And so were the crowds. Old California traveling hippies, young tourist families, local pub lizards, bearded beer geeks, etc. They had live music here one of the nights, as well. This place is quite the local hangout, prepare to make friends!
Protip: If you’re into breweries, be sure you inquire about getting a «passport»!

After a day of hiking the McCloud Falls, we stopped at Dunsmuir Brewery for dinner. We had a group of 7 and they were able to accommodate us easily. The staff was very warm and attentive.
The Chicago brat and the broccoli slaw were delicious. It was nice to have lighter side options versus the traditional fries, chips, etc. Although they had run out of most of their own brews due to the busy summer crowd, they had a great selection of beer.
Live music was provided by a jazz band playing Nirvana songs. Coloring books and crayons were available for the kids.
If you’re in the Siskiyou County area, this place is a must.

Sadly, the brewery’s boiler broke down a few months back, so the taps have been mainly given over to «guests» — well-​chosen ones, natch. Our waitress informed us on July 4 that new beers will be live in a couple weeks.
Whatever you’re drinking, though, the food is great. The Mrs. declared that the fish street tacos «make me want to curse,» the raisin-​onion chutney sets a new bar for the humble bratwurst, the warm German potato salad will make you wonder why so much glop has been dished out and given the potato salad a bad name. And summer is for freshly grilled veggies straight from the barbecue.
The vintage building in historic Dunsmuir suffers a bit in very hot weather, but you can always cool off with a beverage. Looking forward to a return trip for the new batch of brews.

Pros:
*Smoked salmon blt was good.
*Lots of beers on tap if that’s your thing.
*Patio area was a nice treat on a hot day.
*Parking was easy and on the main street.
Cons:
*Staff isn’t attentive.
*Infestation of flies inside and outside.
*Asked for water… gone long enough to fetch from the river.
*$ 3 for a can of soda? No wonder the water is warm.
*Menu items hit and miss depending on inventory.

I have been here more times than I can count. I’ve tried almost every item on the menu. Tasted many of the beers, of which I have favorites of course… but I have yet to find one thing to be unpleased about.
The food is incredibly tasty and a bit gourmet with decently sized portions. Their good beer is in high demand and they run out fast, but I wouldn’t want them to change a thing.
The inside dining and bar is intimate and the patio is large and beautiful. You can see the mountains and trees from every table.
If you live near or are just passing through like myself, you must stop here.

I LOVE craft beer. Anytime I go anywhere, I’m always on the lookout for new breweries to visit. On a camping trip to Castle Crags State Park, I took the opportunity to visit Dunsmuir Brewery Works.
The brewery is located in tiny downtown Dunsmuir, CA, and features a restaurant and bar. There is both indoor & outdoor seating. We arrived at an off hour, between lunch and dinner, and quickly found a table by one of the front windows. The view of the surrounding pine covered mountains was pretty idyllic!
Between the husband and I, we tried the majority of the beers they had available. Everything was great! Seriously. No missteps at all. My favorite was definitely the Rusty Spike Imperial Red and the husband loved the Blood, Sweat, and Tears IPA.
Pints were very well priced and short pours (a great option if you want to taste more than 2 beers and not get completely wasted) of any beer on tap were available.
When I visit new breweries, especially ones that I know I won’t be able to re-​visit often, I love to get a growler to go, both as a souvenir and as a way to enjoy the brewery’s offerings again. This can be problematic, though, if the husband and I visit more than one brewery/​purchase more than one growler, because we may not be able to drink the beer quickly enough before it starts to get flat. Thankfully, DBW offers a bomber (22 oz) in addition to their growler (64 oz), which we definitely took advantage of.
All in all, this is a great brewery. I will definitely be back the next time I’m in the area.

Also Came here on my road trip. Definitely one of the better place my wife and I enjoyed. The craft beer was excellent! All very fresh and flavorful. I ordered six different samples so I know what i’m talking about.
We shared an Adobo chicken sandwich, again very delicious and fresh! Chicken was cooked perfect.
Our server was super busy, but did his best and was pretty attentive at that!
The bill was just under $ 20, and I was VERY happy after I saw that! especially compared to other places in the area (if you know what I mean, see other reviews)
All in all, great spot, if it weren’t 5.5 hrs from home, I would be a regular!

A bit on the expensive side, but the food is surprisingly gourmet. More upscale than your average place.
Beers were solid. We tried a sampling. Unfortunately, they did not have the two we really wanted to try on tap, but we did get to try 3.
We both ordered the nut burgers. And they were very, very good. Among the best vegetarian burgers we’ve ever had. They come on very good ciabatta bread. I enjoyed it, but my husband would have liked them to have put it on the fantastic hot dog bun that was used for the kids’ hot dogs. I don’t know where they get their bread items from, but it must be local and they were very fresh.
