I first brought my cat to South Paws a month ago when she was referred there by my vet for an ultrasound. She stayed a few days for diagnostics and treatment. I’ve since brought her in twice to remove pleural effusion. I was impressed by the facility and the staff. I felt my cat was in very good hands, no matter which doctor or nurse was assigned to her care. I highly recommend SouthPaws.

My dog has had two surgeries here after tearing ligaments in both hind legs. I’m so glad we came here and couldn’t recommend them more. Dr. Brehm and all of the staff here are exceptionally kind, attentive, and skilled, from the consult to all the follow ups. Wyatt has recovered really well from both surgeries with their help, including follow up x-​rays and physical therapy, which were included in the overall price of the surgery. The surgery was expensive, but the total was comprehensive and included the follow ups I mentioned before. Dr. Brehm spent a long time with me before the surgery answering all my questions when I went in for a consultation, and did a great job with both surgeries. He’s an excellent doctor and I am so lucky my local vet referred me here!

NEVER see Dr Nancy Bromberg. This was the worst experience I have had with my dog. I took in my shih tzu to get her eye checked. My mom took her before and said to be aware that Dr Bromberg has a bad attitude against rescue dogs and to be aware of it.
I had the muzzle on my dog but she took it off by the time we got in the office. Dr Bromberg came in, looked at my dog and said I need to put the muzzle on her and she will only be back until I get the muzzle on. She did not introduce herself or even say hi or how are you. She is just plain rude. I was working on getting the muzzle back on and I did but she kept getting it off and she bite me.
Dr Bromberg came back in with Amy and Amy was able to get in on with gloves. Dr Bromberg said «I don’t understand why you have a dog like this when there are so many better dogs out there who won’t bite you. Just get a different dog.» Then she laughed at me and my dog. I kept saying my dog is a great dog and she has come a long way. She ignored me. The office did a good job trying to calm me down but that still doesn’t make it right for someone to tell me to get rid of my dog just because she bites. She is a shih tzu. She has no right to say those things to me. It wasn’t just me. She also said it to my mom as well. My dog is under a lot of training and she is getting better. How dare Dr Bromberg tell me to get rid of her.
I will never see Dr Bromberg again and I hope no one else does either.

I’m giving them 3 star based on their internal communication issues Ihave discussed with one of the doctors. Suggest you stay on top of your animal’s medical problem!

My dog needed ACL surgery so we were referred to South Paws by our vet. We brought our dog to Dr. Siemering. He examined our dog and scheduled surgery for the next day.
We brought her in and they put her under full anesthesia only to be told that when they went to perform the surgery, they discovered a staph infection on her leg (the same one that was examined the day before) I must note my dog is a pit and doesn’t have long fur meaning it was clearly visible. He then had the audacity to try to charge me for the anesthesia; however, after we went back and forth, he agreed to waive the fee. He then gave me medicine to clear it up which didn’t work. I spoke with my primary vet who was a little confused as to why that medicine was prescribed as it is not the first line of defense for a staph infection and is very expensive.
Nonetheless, we went forward with her surgery and 6 months later she is still limping and in pain. We have since moved out of state and while at first Dr. Siemering was helpful in finding a resolution he later declared that after spending nearly $ 5,000 on the surgery I should go and spend another $ 250+ to get her an X-​ray. When asked if I could be reimbursed for some of these additional fees he replied that there is no reimbursement and then refused to respond to any of my voice mails /​texts. His professionalism, not to mention his veterinary skills, leave a lot to be desired. I recommend you take your dog to another doctor in the practice or go elsewhere.

I brought my puppy in VCA SouthPaws Veterinary Specialists for an orthopedic assessment this afternoon. The facility is clean and nicely decorated with comfortable furniture.
The staff are warm and professional. In addition to thoughtfully bringing coffee/​bottled water to each person seated in the waiting area, everyone appeared genuinely empathetic to those waiting and their pets. Needless to say, this is not what I’ve come to expect from veterinary staff so I was impressed.
We saw the surgeon Dr. Jeff Norton. He was very informative, helpful, and willing to answer all of my questions. I’ve seen very few doctor’s for my own health with such a polished bedside manner.
I don’t think I could have come away more impressed with this facility.

Great place for all of your pet concerns

I have usually taken my dog to Southpaws for surgery or emergencies. The one time I did not it turned into a disaster. So back to Southpaws I went where they had to do three redo surgeries on my dog for a very poorly done TPLO done elsewhere. I was trying to save a few bucks and well… That didn’t turn out. The staff at Southpaws are compassionate and caring. They value your pet and realize your pets importance to you. This to me makes them invaluable. I appreciate all the hard work Dr. Norton has done on fixing my GSD. There’s something to be said for a dog who’s had 5 surgeries now that still walks in the door there with her tail wagging! Can’t say I would be the same! This shows me that they give her the care and attention she needs. The other place we went to my dog was shaking and tried to bite the surgeon. Anyone that knows my dog will tell you there had to be something that happened as she would NEVER do something like that. She loves Dr. Norton even after several surgeries and happily walks in for her appts. I cannot say enough how much faith and trust I have for them. In the one time we had a bit of an issue the administrator there proved their reputability and made things right with a generous monetary adjustment for our troubles. I am a vet tech myself of 10 years and You can’t beat their care in my experiences. I feel since now being a part of the Vca chain they are trying to remain like they used to be as much as possible. Vca is so corporate. I have personally found Southpaws to treat me and my pet with respect and dignity one concern I had when they became Vca. But so far so good.

Worst experience EVER. Supposedly this place has a great reputation, so I took my dog there after my regular vet failed to recognize my dog’s painful symptoms and recommended them. The vet did a cursory exam, took my money, and sent us home saying she should be fine. My dog was writhing in pain later. It’s a holiday so my regular vet was already closed. I suspected a urinary tract problem and I asked if we could come in for a urinalysis and not have to pay a second exam fee and was told no, I would have to go to a different vet at their clinic and pay for a second exam. Then they blamed ME for not properly describing my dog’s symptoms, which I had explained in excruciating detail and gotten worse since my visit, and for not requesting lab work, although they never told me a urine test was an option (I was already going back to the regular vet for blood work so told them that wasn’t necessary). The vet absolutely did not perform due diligence and explore even at least some possible causes. If you take your pet there, be a pain in the butt, prepare to help with the diagnosis, and don’t leave until you get answers.

Dr. Bromberg and her staff in Ophthalmology have gone above and beyond for our dog! They squeezed him in when his cornea ruptured and performed surgery after a full day of appointments. The care has been great. The only thing which would’ve helped would’ve been more information about what to expect and what the long term care plan would be but otherwise, everything went great!

Southpaws is home to possibly the most kind, caring and thoughtful staff I have ever encountered, and it says something about the practice that veterinary staff want to work there. I’ve been there for a number of reasons with various pets but I want to give props to the oncology doctors and techs. Not only do they take time to answer questions, but they do it realistically and honestly without giving you any false hope or inflated information. I appreciate that. And when your baby is ready to go over the rainbow bridge, they couldn’t find a more caring place to do it. In direct response to another reviewer here on this page, the staff is human, and they’ll have busy days and hectic days and days where phone calls are very hard to sit down and make. I can understand that when your fur baby is sick, it’s frustrating not to hear from your doctor, but from what I’ve seen at Southpaws, these people work hard and do their best for every patient. They will never just not call you back, or push you off to a tech. Give them a little credit, especially since oncology is often more sad than it is happy. I would send anyone I know that needed a specialist to Southpaws in a heartbeat. Keep up the excellence, Southpaws staff!

LESS THAN 12 HOURS after writing my initial Unilocal review about my unsatisfactory experience with VCA South Paws in Fairfax (Rt. 50), Virginia, I received a call from South Paws. Tom Saunders identified himself as the VCA South Paws Fairfax Hospital Administrator and he was unhappy. This swift response was in stark contrast to my 3 day effort to get a question answered.
Mr. Saunders demanded to have a conversation with me about my Unilocal review. I told him there was nothing to talk about. Without a pause, HE IMMEDIATELY REPLIED, «…then I am going to cancel Rosie’s Tuesday appointment (her 2^nd chemotherapy session {SIC}), and you can tell me where to send her records.»
I replied, «Are you threatening me»?
Tom, «No, I am not threatening you, but… if you are not happy with our care…, we don’t want you here.»
He demanded to know why I hadn’t come to him first. I explained I had no idea he existed! It was a difficult and adversarial conversation. I am actively grieving for my canine friend who is at the end of her life — and he is berating me. I stated that my expectation of communication with the vets and staff at VCA was not unreasonable and had not been met, that I HAD complained to staff about the difficulty communicating. I was now crying openly and felt humiliated and bullied by Mr. Saunders.

What I experienced at this specialty vet practice was a complete failure of administrative support and poor communication channels between myself, the paraprofessional and the professional staff at VCA South Paws, Fairfax, VA. It is Tom Saunders’ job to fix these issues — not blame the client.
In the medical world his threat would be illegal; patient abandonment. However there are no legal equivalents for vet practices. This industry is largely unregulated with very little independent oversight or regulatory/​legal statutes governing veterinary practices which protect consumers and their pets.

Since this large, national corporation moved into animal care, they have bought and monetized hundreds of independent vet practices. The result? Costs to obtain specialty animal care have skyrocketed while individualized, carefully coordinated and empathetic treatment and support is harder to come by.
I have since changed to a different provider of oncology services — smaller and not corporate owned — to help me make some very difficult treatment decisions for my dog at the end of her life.

Having a difficult time communicating with the ONCOLOGY vets and their staff in this South Paws practice about ongoing palliative care for my dog Rosie, who is dying of bladder cancer. The two oncology vets — Dr. Hofer and Dr. Shaffer — are only sporadically available to return telephone calls. On Monday, I called with a simple question… my only telephone query since treatments began three weeks ago. My call wasn’t returned until that evening by their «patient care coordinator», although I had requested that a doctor return my call. That exchange with their PCC was followed by multiple voice mails and email exchanges with several different technicians. It didn’t feel as though any coordination or communication was taking place. The technicians were acting as gatekeepers and «go betweens». Most frustrating, this three point communication scenario led to inaccurate information being relayed to and from the physicians. In additional, the oncology staff lost the initial lab work which was essential to evaluating her condition.

I cannot say enough but a big THANK YOU to the staff at VCA animal hospital this was my second time unfortunately my dog was diagnosed with diabetes by his regular vet I was told to bring him to the Er so I did I brought him here and they did the best job ever! My dogs dr. Was dr. Stiller she was amazing I got personal updates from dr. Stiller everyday mind you remy my dog was in for 48 hours. When I had questions she called me back quick I love the service here it’s amazing the care is great you pay what you get :).

We rushed here around 11 pm on a weekday because our 15 yr old golden retriever was very ill. She had been diagnosed with a tumor and we knew it was a matter of time. The staff immediately brought out a stretcher and attended to our baby. We unfortunately had to put her to sleep but the staff ensured the entire experience was the least painful as possible. Everyone there was very compassionate and we never felt pressure to make any decisions. The vet on call met with us several times giving us constant updates on her condition. In the end, she didn’t make it, but we are thankful her last moments were in a sitting room area in the clinic surrounded by us. A week later we received a very nice condolence card from the center.

My dog had spine surgery there, but four months after it, her paws kept turning inward, and her legs kept collapsing under her, with an unsteady gait. The surgeon was not very responsive after the surgery and was too busy to see her for 2months; when I called and insisted on some sort of aftercare and some answers to this problem, I was told she needed therapy from their star therapist Carol Wasmucky; I agreed., took my limping dog to her, paid a whopping $ 200 for one hour of instructions for generic home exercises which I could have gotten free from UTube and, 3 months later, the wobbly legs and the turning inward paws have not improved in the least. Two observations: Wasmucky never did preliminary research or checked the MRI, which would have guided her to an insight into the cause of the paw/​leg weakness; the exercises she prescribed were generic to any dog with leg weakness and did not address my dog specifically for the paw-​turning-​under problem; and, where does she get off charging such an extreme price without even a degree? My rheumatologist, with an MD and 3 more advanced degrees, charges $ 150 for a visit; my acupuncturist, with a PhD, charges $ 75 for an hour; so, how does Wasmucky get away, with her relatively limited education and experience, charging $ 200 for one hour, a lot of which was taken up looking for treats and trying to get my dog to follow instructions?
Ten years ago, I lost two dogs to them who had cancer, but not before they worked up thousands in lab tests and got mileage from their fancy machines.
I will know better than go back to Southpaws and Carol Wasmucky in the future.

Took good care of my puppy and it is super clean and professional. It is a bit on the expensive side though.

We were referred to this hospital when my dog’s vet suspected that he may have a malignant tumor in his kidney. Everyone at the hospital was very kind and friendly — each of the specialists scheduled a consult with us and spent almost all of the time during the consult on the floor with my dog.
They took their time to explain things to us, and answered all of our questions. I felt that they were very thorough.
I feel that my dog received excellent care here.
He ultimately had one of his kidneys removed, and is now a much happier dog.
If you have an emergent issue, or an issue that requires a specialist, I would recommend this hospital.
The only reason that I’ve given the hospital four stars instead of five is because they were less than communicative with us after my dog’s surgery. Up until that point, I always felt that I could communicate with the staff and the specialists — and that they were willing to speak with me. After the procedure, it was more difficult to get them on the phone.

Southpaws was a referral from my primary care vet after we discovered my dog had lymphoma. We have been patients of Dr. Wesley Campbell in the Oncology Department since November and the experience has been top-​notch. Dr. Campbell and the rest of the Oncology staff are so genuine and caring, I couldn’t imagine trusting this level of care to anyone else.
Patients that go to Southpaws are dealing with an emergency, chronic or life-​threatening issue, so the cost of the specialized care you receive does reflect that. Having enjoyed an extra 6 (and counting) great months with my four-​legged member of the family has been expensive, but worth every penny.
I can’t recommend Southpaws enough for their Oncology Department. I would love to never have had a reason to visit in the first place, but I’m glad that my pup has the quality care she deserves.

Our dog got into some Easter candy, and after he spent most of the day vomiting we decided it was time to take him to a vet. The folks at South Paws were very nice. They determined it wasn’t urgent and so it took about 45 minutes before the doctor could see him, but when she did see him she was very nice and thoroughly explained everything. The prices seemed reasonable based on the services, and they called to follow up a few days later just to make sure everything was okay. I hope we don’t have any more dog emergencies anytime soon, but I’m glad to know that this place is there if we do.

When a beloved 14 year old cat recently suffered an overnight stroke and our regular vet was not able to take us quickly we were referred to Southpaws. It was a Saturday morning of Easter weekend and when we came through the door stating what we expected the issue to be Eva, our cay, was quickly whisked back for evaluation. We had time to fill out basic paperwork before we were escorted to a private room to wait and with preliminary results.
The staff kept us well informed, gave us a broad range of options and certainly didn’t push us to the most costly and aggressive life sustaining treatments but also made it clear they were available. In short, they let us decide about the balance of quality of life vs length of life. Sadly, with the myriad of underlying conditions made clear by a rapid blood panel done in house we were left with the terrible option of saying goodbye to a beloved part of our family.
We were given as much time as we wanted to hold her, pet her and say goodbye (tears are rolling down my face now as then). When we called the doctor in, we had hour cat curled up comfortably in a lounge chair, both of us rubbing her, listening to her purr watching her paws flex and knead in that happy cat way. She was not stressed, she was loved and always will be. The doctor let us know quietly what she was doing as she did it and perfectly balanced the roll she had to play with giving us the space to grieve and experience our loss.
Having friends who quit the field of emergency vet because of the strain of seeing people on terrible days, I can’t say enough about the kindness and understanding shown alongside the professional way the staff here performed. It was one of the most soul wrenching days of my life (and I know how silly that sounds to some) but it was made better in the comforting setting and skilled hands of the staff here. While I hope to never see them again (Eva’s brother sirs on my lap as I type this), it is nice to know that day or night there is a place I trust to rush too.

Came here on Easter Sunday, they did not have any patients, but made us wait for almost 2 hours before seeing our dogs!
Their excuse: we have several emergency cases we are working on to stabilize!
All along the vet was back in her office chatting with 2 other female staff!
NOT GOOD!
They are not attentive at all!

One word. Dangerous and terrible.
Ok maybe that’s two words. But here are a few more to describe how bad of an experience we had.
Let me point out I work in an ER for humans. We have very strict protocols and how we see patients and how the are organized in an ER. This place didn’t even LOOK at my pet before the assigned her to be «non urgent» and we were put in a room for 45 minutes where not a single person came to take vitals or check on our cat. In a human ER this would be unacceptable. First protocol of ANY ER is triage. Triage your patient so you know the acuity and urgency.
After waiting for 45 minutes, we came out to ask what was going on. They said they deemed her stable based on her complaint and didn’t need to even take vitals or exam her.
We promptly left and went to Friendship Heights. Guess what was the the first thing they did at reception? They said «lets look at her to make sure she’s ok and that she can wait out in the waiting room.» Wow! What a concept!
At least triage your patient FIRST before deciding where to put her. Something apparently South Paws never learned. DO NOT take your pet here.
Another review mentioned «the wait can be long but can be true anywhere». Never happened at Friendship Heights. You get what you pay for. You want shoddy care with high prices, South Paws will give you that.

The VCA helped us take care of our dog after another owner lost control of their dog and it ended up attacking ours. We needed to get stitches for our dog and we needed to have someone insure that the wound was properly cleaned. VCA helped us when our dog was in need and we are grateful for that. This happened very late on the weekend and the fact that they were responsive when we called and saw us right away was a comforting feeling as I was extremely livid at how this issue started.
Shortly after we got our dog stitched up we took our dog to our regular vet to ensure everything was done properly and to make sure the gash was healing well and the our personal vet had no issues with how the wound was cleaned and stitched up or the medications that were given. I was very happy to hear that and am thankful to VCA for ensuring that our doggie was okay.

My dog and I were in a car accident and we were out of town. I Unilocaled the nearest and highest rated 24 hour vet clinic and this place came up. Since my dog’s leg had a gash running all through her upper leg exposing her muscle, I rushed over. We were greeted professionally, but I was not allowed to be present at her examination, which I found kind of weird –but, when in Rome…
They came out with what in hindsight I understand was their «worst case scenario estimate». I get that they’re 24 hours and this is why their services’ cost is exorbitant. I also appreciate that they need to do expensive blood work to determine if my young dog’s kidneys and liver can handle anesthesia, and also that though my dog is conscious, alert, not exhibiting any pain, not even barking, at any time, that on top of everything they need x-​rays to make sure there were no fractures when one can easily feel her ribs and entire body and find none. The x-​rays were more expensive than the suturing. They seem like overly zealous amateurs, but I have no choice but to follow their lead.
When I ask when I will be able to pick up my dog the receptionist gives me an attitude of ‘whatever the doctor said’ and ‘she’ll be ready when she’s ready and we’ll call you then’. Three hours later (the maximum time the doctor said the whole procedure would take) I have not heard from them. I call then and the receptionist tells me that my dog is in surgery in that moment. Ok, it’s a busy night.
They call me 1 hour later. I pick her up and to their benefit I will say that the initial estimate was exaggerated. They found that the wound was not as deep as first thought; therefore, there would be no need for drainage and the bill went down a little bit. They give me care instructions, medicines and a list to refer to for dosages and times.
We wake up and I as I try to prep her meds I realize that the names on the medicine list are different from the names on the pill bottles! Hello?! This is why you charge exorbitant amounts of money to make things easy during an emergency, not difficult. After all, I was also in pain and disoriented because of the accident, out of town and now I have to do their work for them too?
They sold me this paper thin elizabethan collar for $ 35 that ties with a shoestring, too large for my dog and which she easily took off=Useless. As if ALL this isn’t exasperating enough, I examine my dog’s stitches after giving her the meds and realize that the wound is partially open, glistening with blood.
I call, inquiring in a polite manner, and get an attitude again as if I’m overreacting and I’m ordered to send pictures of her wound. I send pictures, don’t hear from them in 1 hour and ask to please be called back as my morning is dwindling away and I cannot take care of the errands for which I came to Virginia in the first place. Twenty minutes later they call asking that I bring the dog as they cannot determine from the pictures what’s happened.
I come in with my dog, they examine her (without me present, again) and conclude that since the wound is in a high mobility area that her flesh must have given way to one or two of the stitches (she hasn’t taken one step since she left the clinic) and that the «best course» is to let the open part of the wound heal from the inside out. The cherry on top? The doctor announced they would not be charging me anything for this visit.
Later in the day I decide to take her leather collar off to make her more comfortable only to find that her slide-​on ID tag is missing. The only place it can be is at the clinic as they probably took it off for surgery. I call to ask if it’s here and to please look for it. They called back 2 hours later saying that they couldn’t find it. Thank you Southpaws for more inconvenience and expense.
I give them one star because the experience taught me a lot; otherwise they get 0 stars.

My dog got surgery there due to an urethral prolapse. Costed $ 3,500 to «fix it» and neuter the dog and 6 months later he had the prolapse again. The doctor at South Paws warned me that could happen but still, paying 3,500 for ‘no results’ was disappointing.
Now my dog has ACL and needs surgery, so I have called them and also Friendship Animal Hospital and South Paws for a quotation on the cost of surgery. Here are the results: Friendship Animal Hospital: $ 4600, South Paws: $ 3,800. My vet recommended South Paws, so I am going to try South Paws again.
Update: the rupture of the ligament was partial and knee stability was still good, according to South Paws specialist. Therefore he made a few recommendations to avoid major damage and avoid surgery for the moment. The dr. also explained they tried to reduce the prolapse as much as possible the first time but, as the dog grew, so did its urethra and probably that’s why there is still a bit of a problem with it. Overall my degree of trust and satisfaction where greatly improved after this visit and my score moves up from 3 to 4 stars. The cost of treatments of vets in this area still seems too high to get 5 stars.

South Paws will do a great job of treating your animal, but be careful that what they recommend is actually necessary. My dog was brought to South Paw’s for a dog fight wound by the place where I boarded her. I was away on a trip and never saw my dog or the extent of her damages so trusted South Paw on their judgment. I had a terrible experience and will never bring my dog/​nor recommend South Paw to any pet owner.
My dog had to undergo surgery to explore the wound which involved cutting her open to discover that nothing was wrong thankfully. When they called to receive permission for this surgery, I asked them to remove 2 warts since the dog would have been under anesthesia. When I got to South Paw’s to pick up my dog that night, I found out that they failed to remove the wart.
The vet said they were not able to see if the wound had punctured all the way through, and highly recommended that the dog go through a painful and very expensive surgery. The surgery determined that nothing was wrong but ended up costing me nearly $ 1000 extra. With a more seasoned vet, they may have decided to wait before doing this procedure. If the wound went all the way through the critical area, then the same surgery would have had to been performed plus a little extra.
The vet also failed to remove the warts on my dog when I told them to. I was told after that there was not enough time, and was also told from someone else that they were unable to locate them. They are both very obvious and impossible to miss. Another animal hospital told me that they can either freeze the wart off or do a needle biopsy which are very simple & quick procedures.
The vet also failed to locate other bite wounds from the fight which were on her nose and on her ear which did not require any procedure.
Everyone at South Paw’s was very kind, but failed to follow through. My messages to the office manager were never delivered. When I spoke to the office manager, she never delivered my message to the Director or the director failed to get back to me. Only one person at South Paw’s which was the Critical Department manager had actually followed through on what they were suppose to do.
When I finally got a hold of the manager (and she talked with the Director), I was told that I would not be reimbursed for the incomplete procedure (which cost several hundred due to the anesthesia). I asked for the physical exam of $ 125 to be removed since at the very least, they failed to do that to which they refused.
There are many other animal hospitals in the area and I would recommend seeking other alternatives. You can be assured that your dog would be in safe hands at south paws, but just be weary that they may be looking at their bottom line when suggesting options. They may suggest doing the safest option which is way beyond what a more seasoned vet would recommend.

I absolutely love the entire staff here! Everybody is so helpful and we have gotten amazing service and care. I would highly recommend them for their neuro specialist & emergency services (and yes the prices are high — have you been to an ER lately?). If it’s not an emergency service and you can wait then I would suggest seeing your regular vet.
Back to neuro — I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Talarico! She is seriously the best vet I have ever met!
When we were in for an emergency they offered us water and granola bars which was such a nice touch! And all the rooms have rugs and comfy chairs… making the visit more comfortable for all. I just love the warm, homey feel they offer here.
If they weren’t just specialty and emergency, I would make them my regular vet and drive further for the care, support, and comfort they give.
