The Toasted Frog

The first time I went to The Toasted Frog was over two years ago up in Grand Forks, ND. I lamented the fact that they had this amazing restaurant, and if I ever wanted to eat there again I’d have to drive an hour north. Lo and behold, the powers that be brought The Toasted Frog to downtown Fargo! The food and drink here are the exact same as the original, with the added caveat of having some beers from local breweries here in town. My wife and I went here recently to celebrate (for personal reasons), and our experience couldn’t have been better!
We started off with a couple of their appetizers, the Fried Cheesy Pickles (pickle spears, wrapped in Havarti, and served with Sriracha-​ranch sauce) and the Pork Belly (pork belly, served with balsamic-​blueberry compote). For dinner, my wife had the Fish Tacos, and I went with their special, a Roasted Pork Loin served with a side of Creamy Polenta. For dessert, we tried their Lemon Cake, and it was really good! We finished off our meal with a couple of drinks from the bar; Taylor’s Port for me, and a Bananas Foster Martini for my wife.
So glad Fargo has its own Toasted Frog now; not that I ever minded driving an hour to go to the home store up in Grand Forks, but this definitely saves on gas! LOL

Really something special! Great atmosphere. Great service. Super menu. The kind of place that you come for awesome food but hang out all evening.

Hands down the best food, service, and atmosphere we have encountered in downtown Fargo. Try the signature fried pickle.

This place is worth a try. I like the portion sizes. You can actually get an apatizer and an entre and not want to die afterwards.
The food and drinks are fantastic, as is the service.
Protip: don’t Park on Broadway. Grab a spot on an adjacent street and walk. Trust me on this one.

Hit or miss. The first time I got the fish and chips special and it was amazing! For dessert we split the baked Brie which was stellar! However the second time I had the caprese salad and was not impressed. The cheese tasted past its prime, basil tasted old and the prosciutto tasted off. Hopefully it was just a one time thing. Atmosphere is great. LOVE the outdoor patio!

Tonight we were celebrating a friend’s anniversary! This was my 2^nd time here and everyone else’s 1^st time. Of course we ordered fried pickles as they are delicious at Toasted Frog! We ordered the margarita pizza as well as the chicken pesto both were phenomenal. The waitress also informed us that pizzas are now ½ off after 10pm (too bad we were there at 8pm).
They have great staff and wonderful service was provided. We will definitely be visiting again soon:)

Ok people, here’s how to use Unilocal.Go to a city where you know no one, ask around for good local places to eat. Go to said establishment (AKA toasted frog), sit at bar because, well, it’s a bar. Tell wait staff you’ve never been there and probably won’t be back. Ask for recommendation. Order it. Savor. Rate on Unilocal.Repeat performance tomorrow night at a new spot.
What was the recommendation? I had one of the specials, prosciutto wrapped cod with local peas and carrots. I don’t even like peas. Awesome. Carrots tasted like real carrots. Sauce was something rich and creamy… don’t remember what.
Even got a nod to head to the donut shop across the street tomorrow… get there early for the maple bacon doughnut, she said. You better believe I will!

The Toasted Frog is an eclectic casual-​fine dining restaurant that just recently joined the downtown Fargo scene. It’s calling cards are a better-​than-​average cocktail bar, a unique assortment of food entrees, and wood-​fired pizzas. It should be said that the Toasted Frog is a regional favorite with sister locations in Bismark and Grand Forks, and most of my local friends who were familiar with either of the other two options were absolutely pumped that a branch was finally making its way into the heart of the Fargo scene. In North Dakota fashion, the Toasted Frog does a great job of appealing to local preferences and in presenting it in a casual, though clearly still fine dining way. It’s a nice option for small to medium sized groups, and I’ve even seen the entire place booked for local companies. The place can get quite busy as it is still new and a popular destination for dinner in the spring and fall especially (before people start heading the the lakes every weekend).
The food is really quite well done, and I’ve enjoyed all of the times I’ve dined there, and I also really enjoyed sitting at the cocktail bar for appetizers. For appetizers, I highly recommend the fried cheesy pickles, which are an interesting take on the ‘frickled pickle’ – interesting mostly because it features a dill pickle spear that has been fried in a wonton wrapper (rather than sliced pickles as is common otherwise). On one visit I also sampled the scallops which were tender and cooked to perfection; they were cooked just enough to be cooked through but otherwise had a pleasant light texture and were simply delicious. The roasted pork belly is also highly recommended, although it tends a little bit more to the heavy side for an appetizer. Last, but certainly not least, the Toasted Frog seasonally serves oysters on the halfshell (a set of 3 at $ 2.00) a pop, and these are the perfect accompaniment to a nice cocktail as a warm-​up for dinner downtown.
For dinner entrees, the wood-​fired pizzas are enjoyable, and most people that I know would recommend the fish tacos, which feature grilled Mahi Mahi and an assortment of well done accouterments. But, the first time I was there, a friend and I sat at the bar while we waited for a table to open, sitting quite serendipitously next to one of the off-​duty line cooks/​chefs. When we found out he worked the kitchen, we both hopped on the opportunity to ask what he’d recommend there, and he was answer was quite easy – the pork tenderloin. As he explained it, they put alot of love into it back there, but it’s one of the less ordered items. After ordering it for dinner that very night, I have been hard pressed to find a menu option that was even on par with how delicious that entrée really is; it is highly recommended.
The Toasted Frog is a really great downtown dining option with great North Dakota credentials. It falls somewhere between casual and fine dining with a few menu items that truly offer some fun, unique tastes. Very much worth a visit for locals and should be a certain stop for visiting food afficianados. Tips: Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations as you might be surprised how really great they are. Ask for one of those big window seats if you have the people to fill a table because I can’t imagine a nicer view in the downtown area. I’ve been when it was expectedly busy, but you can get the same or even better experience if you are a little before or after prime dinner time.

Great food but slow service. Although our waitress wasn’t the best and the lack of communication between staff resulted in slow service, the food was very good. The open face sandwiches are fantastic and they have a large variety of food options for a small unique restaurant.

And redemption!
We gave The Toasted Frog another chance on a summer night before a long weekend. We called ahead because we know they can get busy, but there was no wait and we were seated immediately. We chose to dine outdoors in the nice little space they made in the gap between the downtown buildings complete with hanging string lights, it was lovely. Our server was great, he was attentive and ready to answer any questions we had concerning the menu. There was never a long wait for drinks or food to come out. They have a decent choice of beers, although a couple that were on the menu we learned had been replaced when we tried to order them. The food was very good, seasoned and cooked well. My significant other ordered the scallops from the appetizer menu and commented that he had never had scallops prepared so perfectly. We both ordered sandwiches for our main course, which were also good and the portion sizes of everything we ordered were perfect, it’s so nice not to get a giant pile of food dropped in front of you when dining out (something that happens far too often).
Overall, our second experience at The Toasted Frog was excellent and we would happily return.

The food was terrific. The cheesy fried pickles were delicious, as were my fish tacos. However it seemed like our food order got lost. (We were seated immediately, but waited about an hour for food. No idea what happened??? But the waiter and manager were very nice… buying us dessert and a round of drinks to make up for the goof. The delay was beyond any I have ever experienced… but I would come back because the people are good. Oh, and the lemon cake dessert was yummy!

I ordered a steak medium that came out still raw. Food was subpar at best and overpriced.

My coworker and I went here the night of the Spoon concert and it was pretty busy for a Tuesday night… we could either sit at the bar or wait for 30 minutes for a table. We chose the bar and the team there was super friendly and attentive.
I had the Moroccan Lamb Burger and it was delicious. The server recommended that I get it with the Pineapple Mango Salsa; WOW what an amazing combination!
My coworker had the open face pulled pork sandwich and I could smell it from my seat… it was very enticing!
We will most assuredly return on our next visit to Fargo.

I waited for them to open in downtown Fargo and it was worth the wait. They have a great section of beer, wine and liquor. They offer a variety of small and large plates and off menu items. Good service. Wait times very as they tend to be busy.

Dim lighting, classy feel without being uppity, good music playing in the background.
Fried pickles are a MUST. It would be a crime to go in without trying them because they are so damn good, trust me.
I tried the fish tacos for my entrée. They were really good, but assemble-​it-​yourself style which I wasn’t really feeling. If I am paying $ 15 for a dish, I don’t want to put in the work to assemble it, but maybe that’s just me.
Overall, it’s a pretty cool place. I would go back to try more of the food and drinks.

The Toasted Frog was a nice addition to this downtown block and people must be liking it as it seems busy any time I walk or drive by. It was very busy when I stopped in by myself on a Thursday evening. Since I was alone, it was relatively easy to find one of the several open stools at the bar. If I wanted a table, I would have had to wait, as some of the others at the bar were waiting for.
The tap beer selection was adequate and I was able to find a good beer I had not tried before. There were plenty of good options on the menu and I decided on a spinach & mushroom pizza, as those are two of my favorite veggies so it was nice to see them together on a pizza. The pizza was very good, with a thin crust that is crispy on the edges. The pizza would be enough for two people or one person who is very hungry (I didn’t finish mine). If I was not eating alone, I may have went for the Lavosh but they are big and I would have wasted half of it.
The only downside of my visit was that it took quite a while for me to get my food, but management made a point of apologizing (without me asking or giving some type of non-​verbal cue) for the delay and that it would be out soon. The manager apologized once again when she delivered the pizza to my stool.

Stopped in one evening with my girlfriend after having our flight delayed. We ordered a couple beers to toast another night in Fargo in February rather than Palm Springs.
The two of us decided to start off with the cheesy fried pickles appetizer as we would decide what to split for an entre. It would be our second time ordering the pickles as we had stopped in during the holidays for a beer. I immediately recalled how delicious they were after the first bite. We settled on the fish tacos for dinner, which surprised me as my girlfriend doesn’t care too much for seafood. Four warm tortillas came out fajita style with a mango salsa, fresh avacado, and spicy sauce. We finished the plate more than satisfied. However, I remembered my girlfriend’s mom had previously mentioned sharing some tasty s’mores at the Toasted Frog, and seeing them on the menu we decided to go for it. They came out freshly toasted on skewers with chocolate and cherry dipping sauces. It was seriously amazing. You cannot beat a good s’more.
If you’re looking for a not ouragously priced date night. This place is it.

A few weeks ago I called Toasted Frog to find out their happy hour specials and I was told they didn’t’ have one but would soon. Okay cool, we obviously went somewhere else that day and a few weeks later I was with a group after work for an early dinner at 5:30 before an event. Well, they since have implemented Happy Hour but it ends at 5:30…I guess to me, if you’re going to bother having one you should let it last until 6:00. I know that’s caddy but that really bothered me!
On terms of food, I ordered the Chicken Pesto Melt with fries. This sandwich was such a disappointment. It wasn’t remotely hot even though it was covered with melted cheese. If you get a sandwich served that way you expect it to be hot and have gooey cheese.
Last time we visited we had one of the wood fired pizzas and the fried cheesy pickles. Both were fantastic so if you don’t want to be disappointed I highly recommend both of those.

Came here again with a party of 20+ and although I was very impressed by our server who was able to manage such a large group, I was pretty disappointed by the food and drink that I ordered. I told her I really enjoyed the Manhattan the last time I was here, and so she recommended the Smoke & Mirrors. Excitedly brought the drink to my mouth and almost spit it out. The initial taste was fine, but it had a really strange aftertaste of permanent markers. She added some cherry juice to it after she asked how it was, but unfortunately this may have made it even worse. Friends all thought I was crazy for comparing it to permanent markers (since I am safely assuming that none of us have actually tasted permanent markers), but we passed the drink around and they all agreed. They were having a special of calamari that came with chorizo sausage and a lemon aioli (which sounded delightful because who doesn’t love extra sausage with every meal?), but this was pretty disappointing as well. The chorizo was spicy good, but the calamari didn’t taste fresh and was really fishy in taste.

This place is okay. Since it’s so new the wait is ridiculous so make sure you call ahead.
The fried pickles were great but my sandwich was just ok. I originally wanted the chicken pesto melt but they were unable to give me the sandwich with the pesto aioli on the side. I’m assuming everything is pre-​made so watch out if you have allergies. So I changed my mind and went the the caprese melt. The bread was hard and my knife was dull so I couldn’t really eat the sandwich. I will come back again to try something different but this is not on my list of great places to eat in Fargo.
