Orion Moving and Storage

We hired Orion because they had good reviews and the phone woman was very helpful. BUT… they farmed us out to Cloud’s Moving out of Utah. Our stuff was supposed to be stored for 2 months, and it was, but when we were ready for delivery the driver picked up 1000 lbs in Texas and put the stuff in with our load that, we told, completely filled a 55 ft moving van. The driver only hired two assistants to help unload and by 5pm they just shoved most of our stuff into the garage! Fragile antique cabinets had the glass shattered, one box spring to a guest bed is completely missing, the feet were completely knocked off an antique Asian cabinet, pictures had the glass broken, and box containing a dozen sets of double sheets packed around my iron is missing! Orion didn’t help us when we called about damage, and Clouds sent us a form stating we had only 10 days from delivery to make a claim and it took us longer than that to get our stuff moved from the garage into a 4000 sq ft house!
We would NEVER use them again!

I would like to add to the list of complaints folks have with Orion — they are terrible! Go somewhere else for your moving needs! It will start off well enough, Rocky is a great salesperson, but literally the day I signed the contract, the company wouldnt let me speak to him again — every contact had to be through «customer service»! I moved in August last year but things were in storage, I just moved everything out of storage and it reminded me how unhappy I was with everything they did… I wont bore anyone with too many details but suffice to say — in addition to them not confirming the appointment, running late and nonchalantly telling me they would come back the next day (I was leaving town that nite), not bringing the correct boxes for my plasma tv (I paid the extra 50 bucks for speciality boxes ha!), not having the correct boxes for my california king (also clearly stated on the move form at an additional cost), to not being able or willing to tell me where my items were in the shipping process and being several days late — I had to call them 2 or 3 times a day — they just ignore you!!! Then when my boxes arrived, they were crushed… I mean crushed and torn — it was unbelievable. I have pictures and I will upload them. I have moved more than 8 times in 15 years, 3 of those were across country and this was the WORST move I ever encountered. Do yourself a favor and find a different company!!!

I did some searching online and got the best quote from Orion Moving. The salesperson was very nice and polite and she explained to me how moving was. With her instructions, I set a «first available date» and was told within 48 hours of that date I would have my stuff picked up. She told me the transit time for my items would be 5 – 7 business days.
The week before the pick-​up date, I hadn’t heard anything. I called the day before the pick-​up date, and they told me that they had left me a message (which I don’t think they ever did) saying that they’d be at my place for pick-​up between 8am-​11am. The next morning, they called at 9am to say that they didn’t have room on their truck so that another one was being dispatched from their headquarters in Dallas (about a 5 hour drive away) and that they’d be there between 3pm-​5pm. They showed up around 4pm and the three gentlemen were very polite and professional. They got the items loaded up and were ready to go by 8:30pm. The only negative thing about the pick-​up was that the quote was of course underquoted — I ended up having to pay almost $ 1000 more than they quoted me. But what can you do when you are all packed up and have a plane ticket out two days later.
I got to my new city and after 3 business days, I called to see about delivery. They told me that they were planning on loading up my stuff the following day and my items would be there in 7 business days. I didn’t receive a call the next day or the one following, so I called them again. They told me that the driver would be there on delivery date but didn’t know when. The next day (the day before delivery) I finally got a call from the driver who said he’d be there around 4pm.
The day of delivery around 1:30pm, I received a call from the truck driver who said that he was confident that there wouldn’t be room to park an 18-​wheeler at my apartment building. He told me to go rent a UHaul truck and to meet him somewhere (where was up to me) where he could park the truck for shuttling of my items. Luckily, the owner of our local UHaul place allowed us to use his large parking lot for shuttling.
The truck driver showed up around 3:30pm and we had to wait for 2 local guys to serve as muscle. They showed up hot and sweaty at 4pm. They loaded our items into the Uhaul and then we drove back to the apartment, where they unloaded. They didn’t take any breaks and were professional. However, I had been promised that all large furniture would be broken down, packed, and then unpacked and put back together during my move. These movers did not unpack or put together the furniture. In fact, my husband and I did a lot of unpacking to make sure they got their furniture pads back.
Immediately when we were done and returning the UHaul, we noticed one item missing. We told the driver who didn’t seem to care, telling us to «file a claim with Orion». I called Orion the next day and got their answering machine.
After some emails back and forth with their Operations Manager, I finally gave the info necessary about our three missing items (DVD shelves, my diploma, our wedding portrait, and an ironing board). Out of all these items, the middle two had been packed by Orion, but they still misplaced this item. All we really cared about were those items, but after many calls, the manager recommended that we file a claim.
We never heard from Orion, but we did fill out the claims paperwork. Today we received notice that we will receive $ 0.60/lb for the missing items. This is the basic rate if you don’t add moving insurance, but after estimating our lost items as 60 pounds, the only amount we’re getting reimbursed for our personal momentos is $ 36 (if Orion agrees to pay!). I called the office one last time before I send this acknowledgement/​agreement out, and I was told that the Operations Manager was out of town for the past week and she was the only person who would know if they had located my items or not…
Since I got such a great quote initially, I recommended these movers to two of my other friends moving out of the state. My friend G had his items picked up a week earlier than me (they were also hours late to this pick up) and didn’t receive his items in Connecticut until 27 days after pick-​up when they told him 8 – 10 business days. My other friend E had his items picked up the same day as I did, but they were not delivered to NYC until just this past weekend (almost 1 month since pick-​up date).
I can confidently say I would never use these movers again. I’d rather spend the money on the therapy and massages that I would need to move it all myself.

Its been a month and I am still waiting for my things…
So — I have been inspired to write my first review on Unilocal ever to make sure that no one else chooses Orion because the rates seem so tempting. They promised me a move out date, and showed up a day and a half late. The contract said delivery in 7 – 10 days… not even close…

CAN I PLEASE SUBMIT A BIG OLE NEGATIVE 10 STARS?! It’s official. Orion Moving & Storage completely lost our 2 boxes and trashcans. As I mentioned before, one of these boxes was extremely important to me. Over 12 years of memories of friends and family are gone. What happens now? Orion Moving & Storage reimburses us by paying a whopping $ 0.60 for every pound that these boxes weighed. Wow, right??? Yes, yes we should have purchased additional insurance, but couldn’t afford to after they jacked up our moving cost almost double! We def would have would we have known they were going to lose and damage so many of our belongings.
Thanks Orion Moving & Storage for the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE EVER IN MY LIFE! Not only that but thanks for losing countless memories of my family. Just a little advice to Orion Moving and Storage… FIND A NEW PROFESSION, because you suck at this one.
