Description

Specialties

Surrounded by flowers, waterfalls, exotic dancers, gardens and a spectacular dance show that represents all the islands — Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa and New Zealand — Mai-Kai, a restaurant-show place in Ft. Lauderdale, offers all the happiness and hospitality of the Polynesians, only a few miles from home.

History

Established in 1956.

Marvel as agile warriors and beautiful maidens perform dances from the South pacific while you are dining on tropical dishes and exotic drinks from an award winning menu. The Mai-Kai authentically recreates a Polynesian Village complete with tiki torches, a thatch roof, tropical gardens with an orchid collection, giant tiki sculptures, lagoons and waterfalls. This is a perfect place to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or to get married at. The Mai-Kai is home for the nation’s longest running Polynesian Dance Revue. Since the Mai-Kai opened in 1956 the restaurant has received considerable acclaim including Best Dining Entertainment, Best Unique Dining Experience and recognized by Restaurants and Institutions as one of Americas Top 100 Independent Restaurants

Meet the Business Owner

Mireille T.

Business Owner

Mai-Kai opened on December 28, 1956 by Bob and Jack Thornton.

The brothers were inspired by Don the Beachcomber, a restaurant in their native Chicago.

«It seems that ever since we were kids, Jack and I have wanted to own our own Polynesian restaurant,» Bob Thornton told a reporter in 1976. «I don’t remember ever wanting to do anything else.»

Their idea has survived both brothers. As Mai-Kai celebrates its 58th year this year, the Mai-Kai (it means «the finest» in Tahitian) has been kept in the family. Current owners include Mirelle Thornton (Bob’s widow and choreographer of Mai-Kai’s Polynesian show; the nation’s longest running Polynesian Show including Hawaii), son Dave Levy (G.M.) and daughter Kulani Gelardi (C.F.O.).
