The Redwood Fortuna Riverwalk Hotel

Not sure why this hotel gets less than 5 stars. The staff is awesome. For under $ 100 you are getting a very clean room and a hot breakfast (a very good hot breakfast) coffee and apples are available all day in the lobby. You also get an indoor pool, indoor hot tub, gym and it’s pet friendly. Perfect for the price.

I was a bit wary when I saw some of the negative reviews on Unilocal.FEAR NOT. This hotel proves to be very comfortable for a very good deal.
Price per night was about $ 78 compared to other neighboring hotels that were over $ 100. This location was about a 25 minute drive to the Avenue of the Giants.
Everything in the hotel room was clean. I read about stains in the bathtubs /​mattress but I didn’t find any. The TV was up to date. The breakfast was really decent too! They had a hot breakfast available (tater tots, boiled eggs, sausages, etc.) The only thing they were missing was bacon. (Insert Homer Simpson’s moans for bacon here.)
The personnel were also very nice. We asked for extra towels and a comb and they happily obliged.
All in all, I thought it was a very good deal considering how other hotels around the area charged about $ 100+. I have stayed at Best Western, Comfort Inn, Marriott, etc. before and I would say this hotel is comparable in terms of cleanliness, service, and the provided hot breakfast.

Stayed here a couple of nights for a local event. I have to say, I was surprised after reading some of the negative reviews. The room was nice! It was clean, well-​furnished, spacious and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful, the Wi-​Fi was speedy, and the hotel was easy to get to, and quiet. I travel quite a bit, and for the price, this place is a gem.

I booked a night using Hotel Tonight. The rate seemed really good ($ 69) for one night and a decent complimentary breakfast.
The one downside was the gym is a bit far away (still, a good gym) and did not have a sauna (when I booked I was misinformed that it did)

The rating is taking into account the price. It’s a really good value and it’s pet friendly which is great. The complimentary breakfast is actually pretty decent. It loses a star for me because the WiFi was barely usable which is really annoying in this day and age.

The hotel is very clean and comfortable. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The pool is clean and warm and a lovely treat. The breakfast is hot, fresh and tasty and the location is beautiful. Our only complaint was that the cleaner only made our bed and did not clean our room at all.

I booked this hotel through Groupon thinking it would be a great place to stay so my boyfriend and I could see the Redwoods. I was wrong. Here’s why.
Fortuna, CA is the worst town I have ever visited. There is absolutely nothing in this town. My boyfriend and I drove 4 hours to get to the hotel. As soon as we got there we were hunger so we tried finding a place to eat. There was nothing that looked even a little bit decent. We ended up driving to the nearest town 20 minutes both called Eureka. Don’t go there either. There’s nothing to see or do. There’s a big mall but even in the mall itself there wasn’t much. There were several parts of the mall that didn’t even have any business. Just empty space. We ate at a barbecue spot called Porters that had such dry meat.
The hotel rooms smelt so BAD! The second I opened the door I got a huge whiff of like a combination of urine and wet dog. It was gross! I had to keep the door open for 2 minutes to get the smell out of the room. Sad part is, when we were checking in, house keeping literally had just finished cleaning. I was making a reservation when the lady radioed in that she had finished cleaning the room. How sad is that! There was nothing special about the room. The bathroom was incredibly small and just not pleasant.
They messed up my reservation. I booked my room on the 21^st and 22^nd of December. When I arrived they told me they had no reservations under my name. I had a mini heart attack because i wasn’t about to be left out with no room after traveling for 4 hours. Turns out, the reservation was made for the 21^st and 22^nd of November. But on my reservation it said December! The front clerk laughed and said it was okay they had plenty of rooms. I didn’t feel better because of that comment.
Loud neighbors! The people staying near us looked like they had been staying for a while and they were so loud! And because the hotel allowed pets all you could hear at night were the bark battles between all dogs. The rooms have the thinnest walls. I don’t know if it’s because of how thin the walls were but from 8pm to 10am the person staying in the room next to us had the TV on and I could hear every word!
Don’t stay here unless you have to. Don’t visit Fortuna. NOT WORTH IT! If you use Groupon scroll pass it. Don’t even bother. The nearest Redwood park was 20 minutes. After driving for 4 hours, 20 minutes seemed like an eternity. Not worth the money.

For its price range this place is great. It smells, looks, and feels clean and fresh. The rooms are comfortable, and they have taken time to add little comforts. The breakfast spread was unique and taste, I would stop here anytime!

No hot water at this hotel. No electricity the second day. No electricity means our key didn’t work and couldn’t get back into our room. It was like a camping trip, but an expensive one. There are other hotels in Fortuna; The Redwood should only be a last resort.

I’m not quite sure what the other reviewers are complaining about. This inn was absolutely fine for a night of sleep. We were 3 adults in a double queen room. We arrived late at night and the new male desk clerk was very nice and had us checked in quickly. The room was much larger than most, very clean, quiet, and comfortable. It didn’t smell of smoke in the slightest. The complementary breakfast was a tad better than average and there was still a ton to choose from @9:15am (it’s over @10.)
I’d definitely stay here next time I’m diving down 101. There’s nothing outstanding about this place, but everything is perfectly adequate for a night.

This place is a joke… Granted there was not much to choose from on a holiday weekend, but after scouring reviews on Trip Advisor and other hotel websites we figured we would give it a shot. We figured it was only 1 night, how bad could it be? (We forgot to check Unilocal to see how the reviews bode and by the time we did we missed our cancellation period) Take note of all of the bad reviews. kid you not, they are all true. I think the review on ⁷⁄₂₂ is made up or the guests were smoking some good stuff.
$ 170 for a stay… included pet fee, fine. No elevators, had to schlep all of our belongings up the stairs… afraid to leave anything in the car since the area is rather sketchy, dubious meth heads lingering around the property.
Our room. It was so gross, even our dog did not want to go in. He refused to leave the bed and that was only after we removed the filthy comforter. Luckily the sheets appeared to be clean yet the blanket folded on the shelf in the closet area since we no longer had a comforter was not very clean. it had other dog hair embedded in it and it must have been about 30 years old, it was one of those old polyester blankets and appeared to either have been attacked by creatures or it was a blanket that was used in a smoking room at some point.
The carpet. Should be illegal to have such filthy carpeting in a hotel room. I could understand and would cut some slack if this was a room rented by the hour or we paid considerably less for our stay but come on, seriously aside from the nearly black traffic areas to the blood stain on the side of the bed, I’m sure the carpet would walk out on its own if it could.
Cable TV? no. 1 channel is all that we had.
Oh and what about the air conditioning? OMG. That clap trap was so loud. I thought a train was at the other end of the room.
I would have made a bigger deal or complained but after driving 10 hours I just decided to take a few ambien, take a shower, and pass out hope that this was just a bad nightmare.
The «breakfast» I didn’t even bother, but since I was in a coma. my partner decided to go check it out. I heard it consisted of food in troughs and had fly’s circling around all of the food.
Pathetic this is the experience one gets for almost 200 bucks. They spend so much money marketing this dump on their fancy website they give no consideration or attention to their customers and the property. This place even had the nerve to send me a questionnaire about my stay and I took the time to complete it. Everything I shared here on Unilocal,I shared on my review. They didn’t bother to «make it right» or even apologize as they claimed they would in the event that our stay was not pleasurable.
Fortuna sucks. This «hotel» sucks. I would have rather stayed at the Bates Motel.

This is no 4-​star hotel, but it’s a nice and cozy place to stay that offers free parking, Wi-​Fi, complimentary breakfast, a pool and warm customer service.
My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night and really enjoyed it. Check in was quick and the front desk was super friendly. They also keep some fruit and snacks at the front as well!
Our room was typical of any hotel, but loved the fridge and microwave combo. Everything was clean. The bed was EXTREMELY comfortable and the pillows, oh my god. Probably the best I’ve ever slept in a hotel. The one downside is that the walls are a tad thin and you can hear your neighbors.
The complimentary breakfast was good; cereal, milk, coffee, tea, juice, potatoes, sausages, biscuits, bagels, fruit, yogurt.
Overall a very pleasant stay and will return in the future if ever in the area.

Nice quaint motel. It is an older property that has been maintained. Rooms and lobby area are clean and comfortable. One neat feature is an indoor pool and spa. There are many hand painted murals around the property. The mural in the pool area depicts the Redwood trees indignant to the area. The breakfast bar was in the minimalist side. Just basic fare. Staff and service were good.
The motel is located near many local eating establishments.

Reserved directly through hotel and paid full price, $ 139 plus-​taxes. Website said $ 15 pet fee, the hotel info book in the room said $ 20, and the desk charged us $ 25. The room was horribly stained, look at pic attached, when i asked specifically what extra cleaning the do after a pet, the clerk didn’t know. They obviously don’t. Our room had old food, old used q tips and trash behind the refrig, it hadn’t been cleaned properly. The tv was not programmed and the desk clerk tried for 3 times to get it to work, but maintenance wouldn’t answer her, that took 3 hours to get tv working. Then there were no towels in the room. The clerk saw all this. Especially the badly stained rug and trash left in room when she tried tO fix tv. Clerk was going to add a discount, but of course it never was added… iWe stay in a lot of hotels, but never this one again, we moved over to Best Western to a clean, nicer room for $ 30 a night cheaper…

Rooms super shabby and not too clean feeling, nothing like the website or even the pictures on this Unilocal page. Had to work on an assignment, but all 4 wifi networks would not connect. The girl from the front desk came over to our room to help us and could not connect any of our four devices and tried to say it was not the wifi’s fault but our devices. Absolutely maddening. How does a hotel in 2015 not have wifi that works?

Website is pretty deceiving. When we pulled up it looks totally different from the website. We had the King Suite which looked clean with the exception of some carpet stains. We had the large bath in the corner of the room and as soon as we started filling it up an awful sewer type smell started to fill the room. Wasn’t worth complaining about at the time, it was late and we didn’t want to move rooms when we were just leaving early the next morning. Opened both windows and hoped the smell left soon. Shower the next morning took forever to drain. Had weird fixtures popping out of wall also with a crappy duct tape job on the exposed pipe.

We booked this hotel for our first night of our Northern Ca coastal trip. Out room was ready when we arrived, and appeared clean. The pool was out of order, but we weren’t planning to use it anyway. We dropped our bags and headed out for dinner. Returning to hotel around 8, we settled in and then attempted to watch some tv, but our new tv had not been programmed so we could only get one channel. Called down to the front desk and someone came up, looked at the remote for a few minutes and then said sorry, she didn’t know what to do. She offered to move us, but as I was already in my pajamas that wasn’t appealing. She said she would note a discount on our account, which was appreciated.
After she left the room was getting stuffy so we turned on the a/​c. Sounded like a jet plane landing in the room!
We got up early to hit the road and headed down to breakfast. Most of the breakfast was gone already, even though it was barely 7 am and breakfast started at 6:30. I went to the front desk and asked about breakfast, she said ‘aren’t there still cinnamon rolls?’ then informed me that ‘her person’ would be there around 8:30 (I assume with more breakfast??). I told her we needed to get on the road. Wanted to check out and verify that the discount had been applied. At that time the desk girl told me that since I had booked through a third party she was unable to provide a discount. After some back and forth, she finally agreed to apply a ‘small discount’, but would not tell me how much, and said she didn’t know if the refund would come through the hotel or the third party site. I asked if I could have a receipt, and she told me she could not print one out because the rate was unpublished. I asked her how was I supposed to know if I received the discount then?
She finally agreed to print the receipt. Still waiting for a refund 4 days later. At this point I’m not holding my breath.

I had a pretty good experience here! I bought a deal off of groupon that was something close to $ 50 a night including a $ 50 gift certificate to a steakhouse in town, a little redwood sapling, and some postcards from the area.
Fortuna is a teeny town, but it wasn’t without its charm. The hotel is on the opposite side of the freeway from downtown (which isn’t far or anything). It is right across the street from the river which has a cute little trail and a nice view (hence the name).
We got a double queen room since it was cheaper than the king and brought our pups with us since its pet friendly (although its $ 20 a night for your animals). The walls are fairly thin, so you likely will hear your neighbor. The rooms were a good size with a fridge and microwave, and I was very impressed with the bathroom and the size of the shower. And if you’re not a fan of bringing your own toiletries, there are full size things of soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. I guess the downside is if you like taking the little travel things, since they are attached to the thing.
The breakfast is decent and they have a good selection. The beds were comfortable. The service was good and helpful, the WiFi is free. I would say this place is definitely worth it and I would come again. :)

This is a classic clean, good, comfortable place to crash in Fortuna. Basic amenities like free Wifi, breakfast, and a pool are included. Our room came with a TV, iron and board, hairdryer, fridge, microwave, and two king beds, nothing fancy. We stayed here because of a Groupon deal that got us an extra night added on for only $ 50 and also dinner credit at a local restaurant.
I agree with the others on the walls, but I’ve had that problem at other hotels. We happened to be sandwiched between people with a dog on one side and with a baby on the other side, but thank God both were usually quiet! (although I did know when the baby was hungry, twice; mercifully during the day)
Chatted with employees ranging from front desk clerks to maids, and everyone is accommodating and friendly. Amanda in particular is helpful. She has great knowledge of the area, is good at giving directions, and is very pleasant to talk to.
Excellent place to stay for your Fortuna vacation.
