Our forte is listening to the clients wishes and dreams. We will create a garden that fulfills the requirements but will add in a twist of uniqueness to make sure the garden reflects the individual owners personality and not our own as designers. The gardens is meant for the client to enjoy for years to come and not to stroke the ego of the designer. We specialize in designing livable gardens, outdoor rooms, firepits, water features, and mood lighting.

History

Established in 1996.

Originally the business started in 1984 in Laguna Beach, Southern California. After 10 years the company grew and had became a diversified Design –Build and Maintenance company doing multi-​million dollar properties. Then in 1995 when the economy in Orange County took an exceptionally bad turn for the worst, it was time to look for a new market. Upon moving to the Bay Area and falling in love with it, AJ Shepard set up a new practice and it slowly grew and eventually his reputation for designing outdoor rooms and creating unique gardens for clients blossomed once again.

Born and Raised in California. Attended College at the Jewel of the Central Coast in San Luis Obispo. Have worked for several Prestigious firms including The Peridian Group of Newport Beach and Susman Associates in San Francisco. Has been designing great and innovative gardens for people to enjoy and live in for over 30 years. Several awards for beautification, innovation and water conservation.

AJ Shepard (no relation!) fixed up an entry area for a friend of mine’s house. We’re just talking the side of a walkway, up to the front door. Who would have thought that it would make a difference???
Holy cow, what a difference! AJ moved items that were already there (a bench and a sculpture), re-​did the lighting, and re-​did the plants. The thing that was probably the coolest about it was that when I went to my friend’s house, I didn’t «notice a difference» — I just noticed how nice his «house» looked, and how relaxed I felt walking up to the front door.
When he told me that he’d had the work done, of course, I «realized» how many things had moved. But the point of it all is that by using what was there already — and then adding and subtracting to get the feeling my friend and his wife wanted — the place didn’t seem «done.» (You know what I mean.)
I actually asked him for the landscape architect’s name, and had to laugh as his last name is the same as mine. And now I’m putting a Unilocal review here, because it really was that remarkable. Meticulous, very thoughtful, and really quite something! When we go to do some work in our «outside» (we’re working on the house-​part now), this is the guy I’ll call.
Wonder if he’ll smile at the fact that we have the same name, too?

It takes a master to create a master plan.
AJ helped us realize a dream with his vision for our quarter acre of
eroding sand in Golden Gate Heights. Our 80-​year old Norman Tudor came complete with a neglected, overgrown garden and once our remodel was finished in 1996, we asked AJ to help us envision the grounds. Although it took us several years to complete the hardscape (we hauled out 200 tons of sand), irrigation, three phases of planting and lighting, perseverance paid off and the results are truly beautiful and functional. We enjoy AJ’s vision every single day and recommend him to anyone who has a landscaping challenge either big or small. His work has enhanced our lives beyond measure. If you are interested in seeing one of the most breathtaking spaces in the Golden Gate Heights/​Forest Hill area of San Francisco, AJ can arrange for a tour.

We wanted a patio for our side yard and contacted Shepard Design Assoc. AJ worked with us to create a sanctuary. He listened to our wishes and incorporated them into his orginal design. He gave us plants and flowers that would work in our zone as well as recommending a fountain that would best fit.
We have had our new patio for 1 yr now and couldn’t be more thrilled with the end result. Any one who comes to visit wants to go out on the patio for the beautiful colors, fragrance and soothing sounds from the fountain. It is so calming and beautiful.
