Extremely disappointed. I usually go to Thai Basil and by usually I mean always, but thought«why not try something different tonight». I tried out Penang Grill since I saw all of these raving 5 star reviews. Hmmm… Odd… Maybe I caught them on an off night? I ordered two things to go since I figured ok at least something will likely be delicious and since this was a place I had never been to I wanted to try out a few things. I ordered the chicken pad thai, which Is one of my favorites. The noodles were pink and slightly spicy. Right off the bat I found this to be odd since it is not traditionally a spicy dish. It has sort of a very muted, bland taste to it though like something was just faint, like something was just missing. It literally tasted like they had just left something out. Regardless, it was edible. The chicken was cut very thin, almost like a julienne. I will say however, that they were fairly generous with the peanuts and that was perhaps the only noteworthy positive aspect. I ordered one of their curries. I forget which one it was. I am still sort of scarred since tasting it, so please do forgive me, but excuse me… where was the flavor? It tasted like someone had perhaps taken it out behind the store, sprayed it with a water hose, drained it, and served it. No flavor whatsoever. It was almost inedible. I actually threw out about 50% of it because it was so bad. The chicken had absolutely zero flavor either. There were no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I expect a curry to have several different flavors and I expect it to have strong, noticeable flavors and smell to it. This could best be described as above. Sprayed with a water house and briefly drained before serving. I truly hate to be so harsh on this place and I will honestly give it another chance but are you freaking kidding me? If this is any indication of how this restaurant normally is, then Thai Basil(our go to asian place) absolutely blows this place out of the water. I mean like compared to Thai Basil I feel like I got served dog food coming here. Again, sorry to be so harsh with this review but IMO it is astonishing that such a place could stay in business in Greenwich. I’ll check in again some time and hope it is different so I can revise this review…

Oh my god what happened to this place Used consistently bang out great dishes filled with flavor– star rating easily maintained Never again Gone is the authentic calimari salad, with julienned mango & jicama, thai basil and a hind of fire peppers. lime Replaced by frozen calimari rings and booring dressing. Its been 3 years since Ive been here but it used to be the only good Thai food around Did Danny give up on llfe or just Penang? I understand hunan in OG is still a priority, and asiana is still fairly busy, What about Penang? The grilled snapper used to somehow maintain its crispy skin though served in a complementary and not overpowering miso sauce with bok choy, red peppers, herbs and crisp rice angel noodles Its since been replace by a bland brown sauce laden with canned pineapple and reeking of fish sauce. I had to flag them yo take it away because the odor was do pungent. At this point I gad already upset the waitstaff by asking for basil and standing my ground that basil wasn’t solely a sauce dedicated to Penangs’ menu, as my confused 2 waiters might have thought. It really is an actual herb used by many. In tomato soup. In salads with tomato and mozzarella. On pizza. In lemonade. A green leaf. A common one. Ask the chef for and he will provide it to me– I promise. And he did. I happily shred it and added it to my salad Yes, waitstaff was avoiding me now but I was already there, I was hungry, and I was not leaving. I ate the ‘rendition version’ calamari salad and the phad thai came out. I would like to preface this by saying, I raved and came here specifically for the steaming moist flavorful Phad Thai; because of the added touches I couldn’t find in Darien Westport or Fairfield. Because of the cooked egg they serve, ribbon-noodle style on top of the Thai noodles, w/chicken, shrimp or tofu. This simple dish was once topped with sautéed onions, chopped green onion and of course, crushed peanut for flavor and texture and finally, lime quarters, snuggled into the corner the of the noodles Nyope Not anymore. This was worse than any crappy budget norwalk Thai takeout. Dry, flavorless cooked noodles with some peanut and chicken. I thought I could attempt to doctor my food up at the table, inconspicuously, by asking for crushed spicy chili sauce, soy, and limes, however, my food got cold waiting I was officially being ignored now, like the plague. After having asked a few too many extras for my styrofoam and watery fish-sauce dish Eventually I got the dish to a better place but had alienated my favorite Thai place staff in the process. No love lost here Basil folks Its a leaf. Not a sauce. I have to learn my lesson. Consistency is a huge thing, especially in a restaurant. I should have lowered my expectations Why should I have any expectation anyway? Its the only Thai place and it has a prime location in Greenwich CT after all At least the wine was good lol Lhm

This used to be my favorite place. Food quality has declined, and they took the bones out of our favorite dish, the crispy red snapper because other customers complained about having to debone it themselves :(

We have been long standing customers of Penang and have been very satisfied with their food. We ordered take out and were very specific that one of the dishes needed to be vegetarian with no eggs(had to repeat multiple times). After getting home, we found the dish to have meat and eggs. We called and they argued, insisting that we did not specify and that there was nothing they could do. Poor customer service. I wouldn’t have posted had they given us a reasonable response. Will be taking my business else where.

Spicy Wheat noodle is all I order there. It is amazing. I have never had anything like it even living in Manhattan. My girlfriends and I go there bring a bottle or two of wine. We all order that dish and sometimes a small salad, soup or spring roll which are fine. It is a large portion eat half there bring the other half home because it is better the next day hot or cold. Do not go there to sit down within 45 minutes of them closing. They like to close promptly will give you sh*t for showing up. They do rush you out just ignore them and enjoy.

Years no review, shame on me as this is a great go to spot for casual eats when in Greenwich. It gets easily missed by most as it is just off The Avenue enough that shoppers don’t foray this far. I’d say try if you like Asian and don’t neglect the Thai iced tea as its a pick-me-up for sure!

If you like Asiana, go here for something slightly cheaper. Honestly, what always tips the scales for me is that they let you do BYOB which always saves a ton! Wish they also had sushi though!

Everything about this restaurant is fantastic, ESPECIALLY the food! The workers there are very kind and greet you with a genuine smile. Best part is that the prices aren’t outrageous. My favorite dish is the honey walnut shrimp and chicken, it’s absolutely succulent! Best restaurant in Greenwich!

In the mood for fresh and yummy Asian food? This is your place — salads, dumplings, noodle dishes, rice stir-frys, they’ve got it and it’s good. Don’t miss the Thai Spring Veggie Roll — the spicy dipping sauce should be bottled!

Unilocalers let me down again! This place is unauthentic Vietnamese place owned by Chinese people. Avoid summer rolls at all cost(see uploaded pic).

Consistently fine food. I have only had take out food from this establishment so I can’t comment on the restaurant service. The food has been excellent and it is prepared and ready in ten minutes. The General Tso chicken, Chow Fun Noodle selections and appetizers have all been exceptionally good.(New York City restaurant flavor on a side street off Greenwich Avenue). Prices are very reasonable and lunch portions are large. Where else can you get lunch for two for less than twenty dollars in Greenwich? The employees who greet you are friendly and remember what you tend to order. My only suggestion is that if you are used to spicy Szechuan dishes, ask them to be made spicy. Their spicy is only slightly spicy. They are happy to accommodate all requests.

A great option for this neighborhood. The menu is large, so you’re bound to find something you like. I wouldn’t say any of the dishes are the best that I have ever had, but they give good portions, and service is fast. The people who work here are also really kind and all smiles. A solid choice!

A satisfying and tasty treat that has been serving Greenwich for a number of years with tasty, inexpensive, and reliable Asian Fusion. It’s a small but very nicely appointed restaurant with a super attentive wait staff. If you order a dish with no mushrooms and don’t go back for six months and order the same dish, they will remember that you asked for it without mushrooms last time. No joke! I can honestly say I’ve never had a bad experience there! Favorite dishes are the Curry, Chicken with Black Bean Sauce, or the big noodle bowl soup on a cold winter’s day. They do not serve alcohol but you may bring your own bottle of wine which helps keep costs down. It’s not right on the Avenue so it may not be as chic or trendy as it’s Avenue counterparts but it’s probably for the best.

While visiting family in the US, we’ve ordered many a meal from Penang Grill. We LOVE it! We typically order the Walnut Chicken & Shrimp, a Vegetarian pad thai and a chicken pad thai, rice, and spring rolls. This is more than enough to feed 4 hungry people, and VERY satisfying. We generally do takeout, and service is quick, and the food is always hot and fresh!
