Crunch

When in Portland for a long weekend we couldn’t skip our workouts so we tagged along with some friends to Crunch, as this was their gym. The staff were super friendly and helped get us set up with guest passes in no time. The facilities were clean and equipment plentiful. People from all walks of life and fitness levels were here and able to find what they needed. The only downfalls of this place that I noticed in my two days here were that there were a lot of dumbbells, but there was only two of the 17.5 — so my wife and I had to share that set or bump up or down in weight. Also the women’s locker room and restroom are all in the same area — completely. The restroom really should have some division from the changing area for odor, sound, and just overall comfort reasons. It was fine when we arrived but not the best smelling when we went to leave.

The 9.99 a month is a great deal for me since I have been going to the religiously like I used to. The gym is clean and equipment are fairly new and we’ll maintained. This gym is not open 24 hours buy the hours are pretty decent. The trainers here really look like trainers and not just a gm rat who needed a job. One thing that I am kind of annoyed is when I come in and buy something it takes a while to get the attention of the staff not because they are assisting other members but socialzing, otherwise I really do not have a complain about this place.

I joined this gym because it was a really awesome gym and I was able to use it to tan and get in shape for my wedding! I love it and love the location and the staff is very nice. I’m very disappointed with how they go about canceling. I was in contact with them for three months, I move due to my husband being in the army and was unable to come in and sign for canceling. Send three letters and was in contact with people at the locating and in billing. Today if was finally confirmed that it was cancelled on the 21^st of January. Today is the 27^th! 7 days after they got my third letter of was canceled and I had to call to make sure! No one called me, no one followed up with me like they said they would. They also after my account was put on hold because of them messing up I now own $ 20. No «we are sorry for the inconvenience we will take care of it» they said «because you didn’t follow up with us about it we can’t do anything for you»
Never again will they get my business or my family’s.
Completely unacceptable for them to blame me for there error.

Clean and friendly with some awesome equipment.

I go to crunch for the classes! The instructors are so nice and there are alot of classes to choose from. The price is definitely crazy low so you cant expect top of the line, but so far I’ve been pretty happy. I especially like Maria & Wendy the zumba and pound instructors they make class so much fun! It gets pretty crowded from 6 – 8 but that makes sense. Overall I’m pretty happy to be a Crunch member.

I went to this gym for a year, left for 4 months, and decided to come back because the other gym was just too small and a bit out of the way, where this one is literally in my back yard.
Its pretty big, TONS of machines. Its always clean when I’m there, smells nice. The womens room is wonderful, big, and no one doddles or snoops around. its pretty nice.
Since I left they have added a few features, like this gymnasium looking thing with a climbing wall, and a punching bag. It also looks like they put more free weights into their inventory, while I don’t use them, My husband does, and he is pretty happy about it.
All in all, I’m glad that I came back to this gym. It may not be 24/​7, but I get everything I need out of it.

I absolutely love this gym and my trainer. All of the staff I have encountered have been super friendly and amazing. Definitely glad I chose this gym over LA Fitness. I have been working with my trainer Alison since the I started and she is amazing! She knows her stuff and she is just an invested as you are in your goals. She knows my limits and pushes me to do what I am capable of doing. I am always excited to go in and share my little progress steps.
Overall the other members seem friendly and respectful of others space. Plenty of equipment to use even during peak times.
So far I have no complaints with the gym or the staff.

Pros:
Variety of classes offered.
Variety of equipment.
Members are kind to each other.
Not busy late morning.
Cons:
Staff: clearly a management issue– people are trying, they just have no training or leeway to think on their own. Want a channel changed? Need to ask a supervisor! Have a question beyond the physical location of the bathroom or asking to tan? Good luck with that! The folks are nice enough, it just gets frustrating and cumbersome dealing with them, when they clearly had little to no training or guidance.
Trainers: this is only a con if you pay for training. If you just need to know basic «how to use this,» the training is fine. Above and beyond that? RUN AWAY!!! How people can have certifications and be so uneducated in their field is beyond me. Before you pay for training like I did, do yourself a favor and eavesdrop on a session– you will see what I’m talking about. On the other hand, it’s absolutely fantastic entertainment when the trainers are working out there on their own time– it’s like watching wildebeest doing calisthenics, but with more wasted effort and louder grunting! This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, unless you’re trying to control weight and not laugh out loud at the same time…
Roid stink: you know what I’m talking about. Go later in the day when it is busy, or sometimes later in the morning, and you can expect to be walking through some clouds of testosterone fueled funk. While considerable effort is clearly made to mask said stink (here’s looking at you, ladies!), spraying bath and body works floral stink on top of the steroid stink pouring out of your pores will not solve the problem. Rather, you end up simply smelling… More. You know those pubescent boys who bathe in Axe body spray and still smell like dirty little apes? Yeah, it’s like that. But worse because it’s adults… Who should know better.
TV/​Music: I’ve come to expect a certain level of annoying popish with a baseline trash to be pouring from gym speakers– but it’s so loud here that you cannot cancel it out with music through earbuds. It’s painfully loud at times. Not to mention annoying as hell to anyone who doesn’t worship at the temple of top 40 trash.
TVs are set to ESPN, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News. Good luck concentrating on your workout with war, sex, and violence in front of you. But what about ESPN, you ask? Well, I love watching sports, but not watching people talk about sports when I can’t hear what they’re saying because some pop tart is screeching through the speakers at unbearable volume.
Want a channel changed? Tough shit! Even the machines that have personal viewing screens are preset to 4 channels– so you have your choice of violence, sex, sports, or politics/​religion. Yay. Or you could ask the staff to change a channel… Good luck with that.
Cleanliness:
I will say that the equipment is maintained pretty well, and the workouts space does appear to be clean. Just don’t look to close. Or mind the film on the mats. Or look in the corners. Or look down in the locker rooms. Or touch the floor in the class room. Just concentrate on the appearance of clean, and remember to wash everything with bleach. You’ll be fine.

I was in town for a month and decided to join this gym since it was close to where I was staying. The staff was extremely nice and gave me a free t-​shirt when I signed up (don’t know if that was a promotion or just a normal thing).
The gym itself is awesome and has lots of equipment. It was not as crowded as I thought it would be, even around the beginning of January, so finding equipment I needed was very easy.
I would have given this gym 5 stars if it wasn’t for the locker room. If you are coming here, be prepared for old men walking around butt-​naked. They don’t even make the effort to cover themselves after a shower. I don’t know if the management can do much about it, but if they can they should. It’s disgusting
Other than that, this gym is perfect.

Ultimately this is a very nice very clean gym I’ve been going here for 2 years now up until recently only reason why I left was because there was no swimming pool I absolutely love water aerobics. I do like using free weights and machines from time to time but I really prefer the water definitely a great gym for someone who’s on a budget. They have awesome classes but I do admit you have to go in a bit early to get a spot cuz they fill up fast.

In town for a week and hooked me up with a free pass … 24-​hr or LA Fitness wouldn’t even consider a free hour … Gym is clean, updated, and spacious. Also offers trainers as well as classes from what I observed. if you’re looking for a gym in the area I’d recommend giving this one a try.

I love this gym and all of their classes. The people at the desk are always helpful and nice, the trainer I had was great, and the class instructors know their stuff and make me feel comfortable. It’s always clean and not usually that busy when I’m there, around 5:00 PM.

I’ve been going here for almost 6 months now and feel that I can give you a pretty unbiased opinion of this gym. I am the location type when it comes to gyms. My motivation is that it needs to be as close to my house as possible as my motivation will literally be drawn away once I need to make a longer drive. When I was at LA Fitness I was literally a 5 minute drive or possibly a ten to fifteen minute walk away. Once my wife and I moved in together over a year ago my lack of motivation began about going to the gym regularly. I’m not the type that needs a wingman at the gym. I go in plug in my headphones and put the «F» Off sticker on my forehead and want to be left alone to my workout. I don’t want to hear how you lifted an extra set or how hot that girl is on treadmill. I’ve already noticed and pretty much don’t care cause I’m already spoken for. I decided to switch gyms and found Crunch to be a lot closer to my house. I went through my initial tour and did find that they did lack a few pieces of equipment that LA Fitness does have such as a decline bench. Once I joined I found work arounds from the equipment they don’t have and what I do like is the lack of meatheads around the gym. You will find the occasional couple that workout together and a lot of elderly people here to keep their bodies in motion. The only gripe I would have is the lack of Seated Dip and Ab machines where I find myself waiting for from time to time and the amount of douche bags that have no desire to put their weights back when they’re done and don’t think that its only guys I see a lot of women here do it too. For what you pay and the service you get its well worth the money and from the stories I hear about from Planet Fitness I’m glad I joined Crunch cause I don’t need pizza with my workout or to be ridiculed if I accidentally drop a weight.

I have been coming to this gym for a year and a half now. I can honestly say that my disenchantment with it is 50% me not wanting to move (I prefer sleeping, thank you) and 50% the people who come into this gym.
So here’s the thing– this gym membership is only 10 dollars a month, unless you’re interested in the melanoma… er… I mean tanning package, which is 20. Honestly, that’s a friggin good deal if you like to tan, as I used to, before I started thinking about things like cancer. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved tanning. It was almost like a meditation for me, so I’m all for people having the choice to do it, and for 20 monthly, that’s better even than Sunblaze tanning over on Powell, which was already dirt cheap.
BECAUSE it’s only 10 a month, anyone can afford to come here and because they don’t feel the cost, it seems they care less about being a respectful gym-​mate. Not everybody– there are some regulars here who come in, get their work out, and head out, after wiping down the equipment, etc. Unfortunately though, there’s a good number of «drifters», like the New Years Resolutionists who come in a week out of the year right after New Years Eve, and mostly sit on equipment the rest of us would like to utilize to have a phone conversation at the top of their lungs. I once had a video of a gentleman who came in, got on the Precor AMT right beside me, and began singing at the top of his lungs to a point where I couldn’t even drown it out with my headphones up at their loudest. And that sort of thing is on the more benign side of things here.
Having come from 24 hour fitness in Clackamas when we moved over to the Gresham area, it hurt a little bit to make the change. The gym is smaller and people were much more respectful of one another and the equipment at 24. But 24 was 30 dollars a month being grandfathered in to a «good deal». 30 a month isn’t bad. But I’m not driving clear to Mall 205 to go to the nearest 24. I’m also not going to pay to go to Crossfit, and Cascade is pretty much the same as Crunch except they’re just about as pricey as Crossfit. Nope. I’ll deal with my love-​hate relationship with Crunch and it’s misfits. The bottom line here, is that it’s 10 dollars a month, offers good, functional, up-​to-​date equipment, and even has a water filtration system on the drinking fountains. You’ll learn to deal with the people or you will decide that a pricier option will be worth it.

I’ve been coming to this gym for a little over two years, now, and I love it.
The staff started calling me by my name after barely a month and are always both able and willing to help with whatever they can. It’s been getting steadily more popular, due to the price, so afternoon-​evening workouts are crowded.
$ 10 a month for basic members, and $ 20 for premium; unlimited tanning, guest passes, access to any other Crunch gym, and a website used for dieting, workouts, etc.
Being a very basic workout center, anyone starting on the road to physical success will fit in quite well; no «bros» or «gym bunnies», and hardly any colon-​blowing grunts emanating from the bench racks.
The music could use an update, though ;)

Came here when I was in town and wanted a guest pass.
Simple process and I will come back here to work out if I return to the area.

Crunch in Gresham isn’t bad. These are small gyms relatively speaking but I am starting to enjoy it more than the one out in Beaverton.
First off, the evening classes in Gresham are more mixed. i.e. not ALL zumba classes. It really irritates me that the Beaverton Crunch is nothing but these hoo-​ha dance classes in the evening. Lame.
The parking… HORRIBLE.
Staff…so-so.
The equipment here is a little better in my opinion.
Can’t beat the price!

Unfortunately became over crowded. I’m not ok with coming to a class 30 minutes early to fight for my «magic ticket» for class and no open elipticals… plus parking is ALWAYS packed.
I guess you can’t expect too much for $ 10/​month.

A good, simple, no-​frills gym! These are the things I really like about it:
* The price — you can’t beat it! For $ 9.95 a month you get access to the gym and all its exercise classes (Zumba, Pilates, Yoga, kickboxing and more), free use of their online nutrition program and a few personal training sessions. At $ 19.95 you get all of that plus access to any other Crunch gyms in the country, free tanning, and you can bring a guest with you for free ANYTIME you want. There’s also no contract, you pay on a month-​to-​month basis, which is really convenient.
* There’s a good selection of really nice equipment to choose from for your workout. Equipment all seems to be well maintained.
* The exercise classes are offered at various days/​times throughout the week to try and fit people’s schedules.
* It’s clean! The staff is frequently cleaning the floors, emptying the trash bins, etc. And from what I’ve seen, everyone is good about wiping down the equipment with disinfectant after they’re done using it… it’s nice to know I’m not grabbing on to handlebars or sitting in a seat that’s coated in someone else’s sweat. (Bleh!)
* Friendly staff.
Two side-​notes and possibly what you might consider «downsides» of the gym:
* Parking can sometimes be a challenge, especially during the busy hours.
* Not sure if this is true for all the classes, but for both the evening Zumba and kickboxing classes that I’ve been to, you’ll want to get there 15 – 30 minutes early as you’re given passes to get into the class. Both had quite a few people there and the room can get a bit crowded.
