From 1990 — 1994 I was one of the many elementary school and middle school kids that used to frequent this small, neighborhood convenience store. If you’re not from the area, you’d never know this place even existed, as it’s basically tucked away in a mainly residential area inbetween a vacant lot and a few houses — not the most conspicuous location. But every kid walking down Mohr or Eden Ave on the way home from Eden Gardens or Ochoa must’ve hit this place up at least once. Back then I went in weekly for sour cry babies, chico sticks, mamba or lik-um-aid, and the occasional can of Sunkist or Tahitian Treat… and now and then when mom needed milk in a hurry, she’d send me on a 10-minute walk to grab her a gallon from this place. Ah memories…

This is maybe a little racist, but I always thought this was New DELHI Market. guess not. Anyhow, New Deli is a cool little local market that we, as elementary and middle schoolers, would hit up on our way home. We’d buy those great sour punch candy strips and all manner of other mouth-puckering, teeth-rotting goodies. Or doritos, cheetohs, and twinkies. No wonder kids are obese these days. I have no clue what else they sold here, probably liquor, dry groceries, sandwiches, and whatnot. We were like 10, walking from home from school and burning what little allowance our parents gave us. Naturally, all we ever bought was candy and junk food.
