Excelsior in Motion

Found this place just by chance as I was driving through Hermosa Beach area last month. I called, got a hold of Andres, who’s one of the instructors here. I came out a few days later to check out a class, then jumped in to the next class an hour later and have been hooked ever since. I take the Kickboxing classes instructed by Andres, and Boxing classes instructed by Michael. There are more instructors and you can go on their website to check out the days/​times throughout the week. The classes are more cardio focused, with some attention give to technique as well. Both instructors will push you to, and beyond your limits, and like myself you will get addicted. I don’t get paid, or get any discount for my review, just being honest. So like anything, don’t believe everything you read, go and see for yourself. Also, the price is very reasonable, so if you already have a gym membership somewhere (like I do), then I recommend you keep it and add this place to your workout schedule as well. You can use the gym for weightlifting purposes and you can use these guys to help build up your stamina, endurance and sweat some pounds off.

Very little actual boxing done in class more of a boot camp style. Don’t think they want new business as the person who «greeted» me and taught the class was very unfriendly. Made no effort to make me feel welcome.

Excelsior is the best place to go for a truly challenging total body workout! I love this place. Last year I completed 4 separate 30 day challenges with bikram, Pilates, spinning, and then kickboxing. I didn’t skip a day. It was here at excelsior that I could see a difference in my body and got stronger. It felt like home to me. The staff is amazing and each day/​workout is different. Needless to say I was hooked and quit the gym and joined Excelsior!!! You can’t beat the price and while the workouts are intense you will feel great and look even better. The owner, Shar, talks the walk and is an inspiration to all as she will to push you to your potential. I highly recommend this place.

Best gym ever for weight loss and muscle building. Be ready to sweat and decompress, the coaches have very different styles but that’s part of the fun.

If you like being pushed to your limits and getting the most out of your workout class then this is the place for you. Each instructor is different in their own way but equally as good. I am so happy I found this gym, you get your own bag (I hate classes that have one or 2 and you share with 10 people!) each class the routine changes up to constantly keep your body guessing. It’s mostly female clients but I have seen a few males in class as well. I was a college athlete so when we’re doing drills I am in my happy place, it takes me back to the good old days. I have been a spin instructor for years so I get bored very easily especially with classes, but not here. Each time I get to class it’s something new and time flies by.

I took Andreas’ sunday morning session, and I loved this guys energy. Make sure to come hydrated, & ready for a total body challenge! Highly Recommended!

I can’t say enough about how much I love this place. I’ve always wanted to get into working out, but found the regular gym too boring and unmotivating, and private trainers too expensive. I took one class in Feb 2014 and I’ve been hooked ever since.
It’s affordable, plenty of parking and right on PCH. The instructors are friendly and encouraging. The workouts are tough but not impossible, and the instructors are always changing routines to help challenge the body. It’s a full body workout plus a great stress relief with bag work that let’s you beat out hard days. I’ve been going to this place for 3 months now and I average about 3 to 4x visits a week… that’s how much I love it!

Holy cow, I’m out of shape. First class with Sher and she kicked my ass. It was tough but more importantly it was fun. I was looking for a place like this. No contracts, $ 39 a month, I can’t ask for anything more.
I plan on being a regular to this place, I’ve got my schedule set. They have classes in the mornings and at night. It is so convenient. I have found my home gym, I’m done looking.

I originally found this place via Unilocal when my best friend and I were looking for activities to do for a day while we waited for my car to be finished getting repaired down the street.
I’ll preface this by saying that I am from Orange County and I recently started going to kickboxing at Team Oyama in Irvine, which has been by far my favorite gym. I skipped for a few weeks during the holiday because of traveling and the flu so I was pretty out of shape. Let’s not mention the holiday food.
It was also my best friend’s first time and I wanted her to try out kickboxing just to see how she liked it. She is usually one who takes her kindle and reads on an elliptical or goes on a bike for a while.
The reviews on here were great and we decided to take a class for the day. First class is actually free! Yay! The value you get for unlimited classes for $ 39 a month is fantastic. I’ve yet to see a price like that in OC.
Parking is a little hard; you have to park on the street or in the residential area and walk in. There’s only one bathroom (I believe) and it was fairly clean. The gym itself is a little small but there’s enough room to do jogging laps around and it would probably be suitable for a class of 7 – 10 and no more than that. It also seems as though this place mostly appeals to women, although our instructor was a guy.
Our instructor was Jonathan and for the 12PM class on a Saturday, there were only three of us total. The first 15 minutes was straight up cardio (jumping rope, jumping jacks, jogging, etc) with the middle portion working on the bag and the end doing conditioning and toning with weights. It was great that he gave us one on one attention and was very friendly yet clearly knowledgeable. My best friend cussed me out the first 15 minutes but she said she felt great after the class ended.
Although there wasn’t a lot a lot of time spent on the bags, I think this is a great workout overall to burn calories and tone. The guys here definitely know what they’re doing and I think this place has great value.
Wraps are about $ 10 each and you can rent gloves for $ 3. If you’re looking for a great workout, this is the place to go!

I tried this class out and instantly fell in love. The instructors are very knowledgeable and the sweetest.
When you try out the class for the first time you will need to buy wraps ($ 9). They will let you rent gloves if you don’t already own a pair.
The class itself was so motivating and no matter how tired and out of breath I was they are there to encourage.
After class you can decide if you want to sign up. There is no pressure what so ever from them. Which is great.
I can’t express enough how in love with this place is and I can’t wait to continue this out!

I’ve been taking class with Michael and want to add him to the list off awesome instructors at Excelsior. I just wish they taught more.

LOVE this new kickboxing/​boxing studio! I had always wanted one that just did these two classes! I get a sweat dripping workout every time. The teachers are all great and really push you to do your best but by getting a great workout. You cannot beat the price for $ 40/​month unlimited. So reasonable. Tried the 90 minute class on Saturday — I loved it. It was really challenging for me but every next class I go to I can feel how strong I’m getting. I’ve already lost a few inches in the last month and can’t wait to continue doing so. I took the first class which was free and I was hooked! Clean facility, and great music to keep you energized. I am so glad that I signed up!

You just cant beat the value Sher is offering. You can take as many boxing & kick boxing classes as you want starting at 6:30am, which is why I joined as all the other options started too late in the morning or too early in the evening and cost anywhere from 2x/​3x as much. You get fantastic & friendly instructors who put you through lots of fun bag work & body weight cardio. And all for a monthly, contract free price that will blow your mind. A months membership is about what 10 Venti Fraps cost at Starbucks! So loose the 10 Fraps per month and add 3+ boxing /​kickboxing classes a week to your schedule and you will be a new person. You wont miss the Fraps anymore either. Will even save some serious $ on the other 20 Fraps you wont need. Not only will you get into shape quick fast, but you will also learn how to box & kickbox which makes this such a great deal. Its perfect for beginners and cross-​fit beasts alike as the instructors can dial the intensity up or down for ea. individual as needed and push you to new heights with every class. Everyone comes out with a great sense of accomplishment. Take a free class and you will see & feel what I mean.

I use to go to the HIIT gym here before it closed down. So while driving up PCH, I saw that it turned into a kickboxing/​boxing gym! I’ve been going to turbo kickboxing for 4 – 5 years at the 24hr fitness at LAX and absolutely love it. But I’ve always wanted to try punching something other than air, so I looked up the gym online.
I had my first class w/​Sher where it was just me and 2 other guys. If you don’t have hand wraps, you can buy them there (I did!). And gloves are free for your first class. Also, the first class is free! Park at the street or behind the sofa store next door.
The «warm-​up» nearly killed me! It definitely warmed me up and by the time we started working on the bags, I was working up a sweat. She taught us the basic punches (jab, cross, hook, uppercut) and then started teaching us some combinations. Then she added the kicks and more combinations. She would add to existing combinations and with the small class size, she can correct your form… and also call you out when you’re slacking! Towards the end of class, time is spent on abs/​leg/​butt exercises and then a cool-​down stretch. I was completely beat. I thought I was in somewhat decent shape due to my having done turbo kickboxing for so long, but it is completely different! There’s more satisfaction in punching a bag, and there’s a lot more resistance and strength involved.
I was hooked and immediately got a membership (very affordable compared to my yoga membership, which I go to in the evenings to compliment this kickboxing class!). The next few classes have been with Michael in the mornings and again, small class size. It’s always 2 – 4 people. And Michael focuses a lot more on form/​technique, which is great because by the time we have a class with Cher again, we can actually be a bit faster in execution. Though not even remotely as fast as she is!
In a way, I hope the class size stays small because the coaches are great and provide a lot of attention (sometimes unwanted when you’re tired!), but I also want this gym to succeed. The instructors are great, are motivational and will correct your form and that’s just not something you see in the large gyms with 50+ people in class. So I will keep coming back and support the gym and the staff — I’ve been recommending this gym to all my turbo kick friends!

Awesome workout! I have taken boxing classes at various locations and Excelsior is the gym I have been looking for. The instructors are amazing and take the time to focus on form. Workouts are tough, but so much fun.

Jeffrey is AWESOME and really cares about your form (which is rare). He corrected my friend and I often and kept us going even though I gave up at the end. Clean new place. Go try it out! First class is free. Park in the back behind Sofa U Love (which is not vacant)

WOW! what a full body workout! FIrst class ever of kickboxing and I m totally in love!
The instructor (Jeff) took his time to explain and correct form on all moves. He kept giving feedback and encouraged to keep moving. Amazing butt workout! The gym is super clean and spacious. The price is super affordable, no hiding fees No contracts, No BS! just $ 39 per mo unlimited! I m going back again and again!!! Thanks so much for such a great class!
