Mir Music

This place is a joke, I purchased a Saxaphone from them a few months ago and it was a display. I had little knowledge about instruments, and basically depended on the shop to give me some insight. I decided to purchase the instrument because I looked at the cost of rental and it just made more sense to purchase. Anyway, after some research I realized that I should have had the neck strap, pad saver, and a few other items and a case. I went to the store and asked about the items that were not included and the owner gave me cork grease and a cleaning cloth. I asked for the pad saver and his response was, «No that’s more than I’m willing to part with,» and he walked away. Extremely negative, and clearly, he had no time for me especially since he already had my money. Sadly, since I have mentioned this to others, most also have nothing pleasant to say and strongly encourage me to go across the street to the other downtown Hillsboro music store, NOT MIR MUSIC!

A Music store for all styles, cultures, and skill level! Great instruments line the walls, the instructors are top-​quality and personable, and when you need that last-​minute guitar string, or microphone because your gig is in an hour… they can help you with that too!!! Great people, great place!

I really despise having to post a bad review but our experience with Mir Music was negative for the short 3 months in which we rented an instrument. In fact, this is my first review which isn’t a positive one. I cannot post this review without choosing a rating, so I’m giving a 1-​star rating because, well, I have to in order to post my review.
First, new to the area we were excited to find a musical instrument shop within minutes from home. No issues when my husband and daughter went in to rent the instrument.
~2 weeks pass and we return because the keys were ‘sticking’ among other issues. As my daughter begins to explain the issues and areas of concern she is rudely interrupted by the representative. He didn’t give her a minute to complete one sentence. We push that aside and wait a good 30 minutes in the store for him to fix the cork, and then pass off the instrument to the back room. The man in the back room insists there isn’t an issue. I then ask my daughter to attempt to replicate the issue as it would be easier for the repair man to understand. She plays and again they dismiss her concern. I ask her to play a while longer, and then, they reluctantly ask to have the instrument, take it to the back room, another 15 minutes and it is fine for the time being.
Last week we returned as my daughter was experiencing similar issues. Again, the same representative, rudely interrupted her, accusing her of dropping the instrument. This time I politely ask him to allow her to finish explaining the issues so that he can better understand how to address the repair. With a loud sigh, he motions for her to continue.
Last night we come to pick up the instrument that’s been repaired. I ask my daughter to test it out and we instantly notice her 5 + reeds are missing. She cannot test it out. When we ask for the reeds we are surprised at the response. We were told something along the lines of «Why don’t you check at home, logically they wouldn’t be in the case, why would we take them out?» After I inform him that I am positive the reeds were left in the case as I checked the case as well when we turned it in for repair. I assumed this would be a simple fix. I was absolutely wrong. Along with the negative remarks from the repair man in the back room, the representative continued to talk to us in a condescending manner. He insinuated that my daughter was being deceitful and lost her reeds. What bothered me the most is I was very calm and polite and these 2 men were absolutely rude and had a complete lack of customer service.
Next, I inquire on the process to cancel our rental agreement. After careful inspection he deems the instrument in good condition. Since our experience was less than desirable I asked for a record of its return condition and date. He then gives me the receipt for the repair fee. Although angry, I still thank him. Oddly enough his response was «I’m not even going to say anything.» At this point I have had more than enough, it was bad enough my daughter had to witness such behavior and disrespect from 2 adults running this store. After we have the check-​in receipt, we leave the store.
No less than 15 minutes later I received a call from the representative informing me that their newer employee forgot to return my daughter’s reeds when he removed them from her case as he vacuumed the case. He did apologize, but I am very saddened that each time that we visited the store, my daughter had to witness such blatant, demeaning behavior.
I still marvel in disbelief at the responses, but it served it’s purpose – perhaps after the first visit I should have not given the representative the benefit of the doubt and just went with my gut feeling.

I love this little music shop in Downtown Hillsboro. I have rented trombones for my boys when there were in middle school, and later purchased trombones and had repairs on a guitar here. I have always had great service. This little shop has a lot to offer from rental, repairs, lessons and equipment. I love this shop.

I really hate to give bad reviews but let me break this down with both the good and the bad aspects to this musical business.
The Good
–The store is situated in a great environment on Mainstreet, Hillsboro Oregon. It is a small quaint little store that places a large emphasis in my opinion on string instruments and orchestral instruments ranging from Harps, Basses, Violins and Cellos but they do have a nice selection of Brass Instruments as well.
–Mir Music offers lessons and from what I have heard are very professional but expensive. This music store is great in terms of instrumental quality and really the only thing it lacks is a good personnel. Let me explain…
The Bad
–The owner Jack, is far from being the happy customer oriented man you would expect out of a music shop owner. He seems to always be foul tempered and treats his staff and customers like he doesn’t have the time to deal with their problems. However. He is very knowledgeable in his field and you might not be able to find someone as smart as he is in regards to instrument repair and general information.
All in all, I felt like this place just didn’t hit the right note with me. The owner is very sharp with musical knowledge but acts flat towards his customers and fellow staff. The store is well composed of many different types of melodic instruments and they do an alright good job of maintaining the place but there is a strong air of «I don’t really care about my customers» going on. I think if Jack was more open towards his customers and had a much better attitude, this music store would be ranked much higher but often times, its the staff and people you talk to that tend to lure you into one place over another. In this case, I would recommend «Watz Up Hillsboro Music» located directly across the street where the Hawaiian themed store and social owners are sure to make you feel like you are important not to mention they have an excellent selection of instruments and other accessories.

Tried to get help from the owner on building a harp for a science project. The owner was rude and very unhelpful. Actually made me feel bad. Walked down the street to the other music store in Hillsboro and got lots of help.

I rented an instrument for my son and was told I could use 16 months of the rental money towards the purchase of a regular (not sale) priced item. But, after spending $ 288 in rental fees the owner, Jack, who couldn’t have been more annoyed that I would have the audacity to try to use a rental credit that was so large, wouldn’t sell me anything under $ 500, even if it’s regular ticket price was under $ 500. Plus, every time we did pick out an instrument we liked, only the most expensive brand/​item was available for us to buy with our credit, which was generally over $ 800!!. None of the lower regular priced items were available to us. When we said this isn’t fair he said that, «I have to make money». Didn’t he just make $ 288 off me? If you don’t want to give people the credit for rentals don’t offer it to your customers. In my opinion, Jack at Mir Music is scamming people out of their money and it’s just not fair. We are all hard working individuals who need our money, not just Jack.

The owner of this hole in the wall is one piece of work. Turns out he’s from New York. You can definately tell by his personality. If you like being talked down to like your a piece of crap, then this is the place to be. Ask questions about stuff? He’ll barely look up to help you. Treats customers as well as employees very disrespectfully. Prices are too high and not a lot of choice. Special order, you say? Good luck with that. And forget about walking into this place around closing time. He’ll about put his foot in your butt to get you out the door. Walking away from Mir Music, my six year old daughter asked why the music man had to been so mean. I mean, my six year old gets it. Why wouldn’t this has-​been get it?
