Nothing special or spectular about the service. A friendlier vibe from the staff and management would definitely help the atmosphere. Other then that the overall feel and look of the bar is perfect. Its a nice spot to sit outside, without the usually rowdy behavior u see on a weekend. They also show UFC fights, which is a bonus.

This place is now closed for good. It went from being okay(on Gray) to complete shit(on Milam). It seemed like they eliminated everything that made going to the Tavern worthwhile. Gone were the pool tables, the video poker, and the ping pong table. I never felt welcome at this new location; it was cramped and had only a few T.V.‘s. To me it seemed as if they were trying to transition into a wine bar. Way to appease your loyal regulars! It never got as packed as it would at the W. Gray location; even on dollar taco nights. Once you set foot in here, you’d know, the end is nigh. Piss poor attitudes and shitty management makes me hope they never re-open this abomination ever again.

Sadly, I must update this review to report that The Tavern is now CLOSED. I liked their original location better but I’ll still miss them.

It was a nice place to go for steak night… too bad it’s closed now. I think the guy there said he was going to turn it into a Mexican restaurant … o well… I look forward to trying it out in it’s next incarnation.

I stopped doing business with them at the Gray location as the crowd seemed to be more ghetto as the days went on. The bartenders were hit and miss. Most are reasonably attractive but that attracts many Ed Hardy types that try to talk to them ad nauseum. I’ve been by the location on Milam but there doesnt seem to be many people there. That location hasnt served others well either.

After a fabulous evening at BestFest my friends and I were looking for somewhere to have a few beers and eat something. We saw the new Tavern location on Milam and decided to check it out. The new location has a nice size patio but overall I found the entire bar poorly designed and choppy. Sunday night is steak night and it smelled and looked delicious. I wasn’t hungry enough for that so I ordered the quesadillas. They were surprisingly delicious! It was a small portion of shredded chicken and cheese in between 2 crispy, buttery tortillas that had been cooked on a griddle. It was also served with a fresh and spicy pico. My dining companions ordered burgers and said there were pretty awesome as well. The atmosphere is another story… Upon entering there were 2 dudes playing guitar and singing. They played every extremely predictable bar song I could think of. It was comical to my friends and I. Bön Jovi’s «Dead or Alive» really sealed the deal. We all looked at each other in shock of the lack of originality the poor guys had. There was also a toothless man eying myself and the other girls in my group. It was a bit distracting to say the least. Overall I just feel that this place is a bit trashy… Not my scene I guess. I’ll give it another try, as it was a Sunday night and it may be better on a more popular night to go out.

This was one of my last stops prior to heading to Iraq. I cannot say enough about the service, and the experience. I LOVE crawfish. They had it. In abundance. I love beer. Cold beer. And they had that too. I love friendly people, with friendly smiles, and a warm presence about them. And the best? Customers who freely give you their pitcher of beer complete with cups, and good cheer just for saying, «Man, I could use a pitcher of beer.» It really happened to me. At this place. And I still get warm fuzzies when I think of it. Everything about The Tavern was cool. I cannot WAIT to go back.

This review is only for Wednesday night– Steak Night. I usually come here with a huge group of friends once a month. Service is pretty busy… just depends on where you sit. If you sit outside– you have to order at the bar. But if you sit inside the bar– you can get your order quick. Steak night consist of a huge piece of steak and baked potato(or you can get a substitute for your potato for a side salad, fries, or onion rings) for $ 15 dollars. Plus, for all of the beer drinkers out there, they have Saint Arnold by the pitchers too. Happy hour pitchers are from 3 – 7 p.m. and its $ 6 dollars for a pitcher. Not bad for really good steak and beer.

Yay! I’m finally getting around to writing all my reviews from the past few months! Let me start of by saying this place is a lot bigger than I thought. Normally I’d say oh crap I’m never gonna be able to find my friends and the restrooms are gonna be disgusting, but this was not the case. I was immediately able to spot my friends when I walked into the establishment, which saved me from that awkward lost sheep thing I normally have going on when I walk into a bar alone. We ordered a pitcher, which was reasonably inexpensive, and got some cups to play beer pong. There’s a room set up with multiple beer pong tables, and I believe a pool table? During our game we realize it was karaōke night, and started rocking out to the horrible renditions of 80’s songs everyone was singing. This place is one of the better drunken karaōke places. You can get an audience if you wanna sing, and it’s easy enough to escape the screeching of a tone deaf singer. Outside there’s almost always a game of flip cup going, and they’ll invite you to play with them as long as you have a smile on your face. This is a great place to go with friends if you’re looking for a fun laid back night out.

I’d give this place an easy 4 stars for the early evening crawfish & beer experience, but I have to take a star off after considering that it isn’t a very attractive option for weekend evenings. Their Crawfish are awesome. They’re served on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays for $ 3.50/lb. For those of you who don’t know crawfish like I do, that’s a ridiculously low price. Most of them were tiny, although the season is still young, and the value is still great. They’re cooked the CORRECT way: in a big boiling pot with the seasoning, rather than simply coating them in seasoning after cooking. My hands were still burning the next morning. Happy Hour runs until 8pm and the deals are great. Most notable is the $ 0.50 lone star bottles. Goddamn. As for why I took a star off: I took a good look inside, the place is just kinda ugly. Not charmingly laid-back ugly, just ugly. It reminded me of my frat-house days, and that’s both a good thing and a bad thing.

So a Yankee friend of mine was coming in yesterday for work, and he wanted to meet at a laid back, fun bar. Luckily, I had read Eva K’s review on The Tavern. Soooo… Samantha P joined me along with Eric, my friend’s college roomate and his gf, in showing the yankee a little piece of Texas The driinks were cheap, but I am not sure how much, since the guys wouldn’t let the girls buy drinks… We started a game of pong. .. I didn’t play because I know my limitations, but. .. I enjoyed watching the game. There was Karaōke in the adjacent room, and Samantha P and I got distracted by a spirited bar rendition of «What’s going on?» After the pong game, we hung out at the karaōke room and sang along to Bohemian Rhapsody and Friends in Low Places. As we were leaving, my yankee friend spotted a game of flip cup… Like Eva K, I got involved in a massive flip cup game… there were at least 20 ppl flipping at any given point. I found out that I am amazing! A NATURAL! I found my talent. My team won several rounds as I made the victorious flip. This place was awesome for their ping pong, their Karaōke and the community flip cup games. I don’t know why this place hasn’t received more Unilocaly love.

I spent this past Saturday early evening pre-gaming at the Tavern, why? 50 cent Lone Stars(in a plastic cup), laid back clientel and ping pong, duh! This bar sprawls and offers plenty of activities such as ping pong, pool, darts, they even have bean bag toss set up out front! I played my first game of flip cup ever, I know, I know… We managed to attract a large group and I believe we ended up with 14 people in the game. Guess what… I ended up being the winning anchor, I was hoisted up onto my teammates shoulders post-game and for 15 minutes I was the most popular girl at the bar. ;) The taquitos and queso were forgettable I must say… The queso just had that weird grainy texture to it, you know what I’m talking about? Steaks reign supreme here on Wednesday and Sunday as other reviewers have already praised, so do yourself a favor and check it out with some good company.

Thursday night’s crawfish was ten times better than Sunday’s! Whoever cooked the crawfish did an excellent job, and I even ate the potato and corn. It was so spicy, my nose watered; the crawfish was definitely more spicy than salty(compared to Sunday). I would’ve rated four stars, but the waitress took an hour to bring me a straw after I asked twice. I realize this seems like a minuscule detail, but otherwise, I look like an idiot trying to drink from a glass of water with crawfishy, dirty hands!

I really wanted to like this place. I find absolutely nothing redeeming about it. One star. I will not come back here. I think«Eek! Methinks not» is quite appropriate for this place, and the only other place in the city I have given one star yet. Not really sure where I should start. The bouncer giving a well-dressed, well-educated group of shy 20somethings a bunch of noise before we even got in there? The rude bartender? The loud, out of control crowd inside? Finally heading outside, the extremely rude drink girl/waitress that messes up simple beer orders, then accuses you of not knowing what you just ordered? The noisier patrons outside? Or having my card charged TWICE, then waiting around twenty minutes to dispute it with a non-existent manager before finally saying fiddlesticks and going home? I wouldn’t bring my worst enemy here. Not even if he put sugar in my gas tank and kissed my sister. There is so much in the immediate area that you don’t need to come here either.

First the good: The Tavern is an awesome bar BUILDING, as in the facility is great. It is a giant bar that was not crowded at all on a Saturday night and had plenty of places to sit. There are tons of things to do here too, such as pool, ping pong, bean bag toss, darts, free popcorn. So if you want to do any of those things, then this is a great place to go. They also have really good happy hours apparently, which they weren’t having last night. I believe Tues and Thurs they have FIFTYCENTLONESTARS. They also have food specials that vary throughout the week. The bad: everything else was pretty mediocre to bad. The bartender we had was a huge prick and made weak drinks. The music they played overhead was some of the worst crap I have ever heard in my life, which is one of the main reasons we ended up leaving. Again, the facility is awesome which gives it 2 extra stars.

Oh Tavern, how you have failed me. Instead of offering one of the best bar burgers we’ve found in Houston, you’ve replaced it with something generic that wasn’t even up to Whataburger standards. Grey, flavorless frozen beef, a limp boring bun, and decent but unremarkable vegetables result in a burger that does absolutely nothing to distinguish it. Whoever decided on this change should reconsider. We won’t be going back.

OK everyone, I am just reviewing their ONE very special item here — Steak Nite! Every Wed & Sun, Tavern offers $ 15 steak & baked potato. I love steak & crave for those tender juicy meat once awhile & being just a block from my house, its a blessing… I have checked several bars around Houston and most offers really mediocre Steak Nite. I brought many friends to try, all loved it even the pickiest one that usually splash on more expensive restaurants such as Flemings, Vic & Anthony, Ruth Chris, etc You get 16oz well marinated, flavorful piece of ribeye with baked potato(whichever you like it, they will fill it for you). I do prefer my steak medium-rare but most time, i get them medium but am not complaining coz everytime that piece of meat placed in front of me, i devour it without complaining… so, GO, HIGHLYRECOMMENDED but be warned though, go on a quiet evening where there’s no important games going on tv, otherwise, you will wait for a loooooonnnnngggggg time and pray that the waitress will get your order correctly! Oh as for the bar, crowds & drinks, no idea and not interested, just give me the steak & i’m not going to bother anyone…

Couldn’t agree with Crystal L more. I wasn’t with her on this particular night where she experience rude service, but I too got the same does of The Tavern treatment on another occasion. Not only was our waitress absent most of the time and took forever to grab our beers – so long I was forced to go to the bar – but the lovely server had the nerve to over-tip herself on my tab. I didn’t realize this until a few months later when I looked over my online bank statement and noticed she added more on to the tip I already left her. She probably assumed I was too tipsy because I had trouble finding my card once she gave it back to me, oh, but honey, I found out because I always right out my amount on my second copy and keep it for tax purposes! Why in the world would I tip someone more than double of what my tab was?(I’ve only done this when hooked up at the bar, not the case here.) So it was too late to refute the charges from my bank, and I figured it wasn’t worth my time to contact The Tavern. Unilocaling the sitch would be more helpful. So note to all you Tavern fans: double check you bank/credit card statement, just pay cash … or just don’t go here.
