Hunter Mt Ski Bowl

Went to hunter on a beautiful spring day. Conditions for this horrible winter were very good. Lots of terrain still open, had lunch in cafeteria. Corn chowder soup tasted homemade, turkey sandwich on chibatta bread… nice. Prices, typical resort.

Took my son and wife to Hunter Mountain yesterday and it was a great experience. While they skied I wondered around taking in the lodge, restaurants and bars. While it was fairly crowded the food service and drink service was fast and friendly. Special shout out to Johnny the bartender. Note, the bar is cash only, deal with it. The rest of the resort takes credit cards. My son and wife particularly liked the 6 person fast lift. Fast lines. They have a great teaching school also. My son took two lessons there when he was 4 and loved every minute. A fun place with great skiing and nice people. If you visit in the summer they have a great zip line too.

This is probably one of the better mountains to go to for a weekend or day ski trip from NYC. If the snow conditions aren’t good for skiing /​snowboarding, you should consider snowtubing. Its a small hill, but I had a good time, last time I went.
Paragon Sports, OvRride and several other businesses offer day trip packages to Hunter (which includes roundtrip transportation from NYC… you can also opt to include lift tickets to the package). For Paragon Sports, you can also add on equipment rentals from Paragon sports.
One thing to note: I’d prefer the bus services that would provide just one stop (pickup and drop off location) in the city. Stopping by all the different stops within the city is such a drag with NYC traffic, etc… Feel like we added about an extra 1hr commute time because of the multiple stops and cutting across town.

I’ve had a midweek pass to hunter mountain for the past two years and it’s been awesome. I work 3 days a week so I usually come during the week to beat crowds. I’m a snowboarder FYI. They always try to make as much snow on the trails as they can. It’s a quick two hours from NYC and better in my opinion than camelback, JFBB and mountain creek. It’s a 4k summit and has some pretty decent double blacks on hunter west. There’s a small terrain park with a couple 4ft –6ft jumps and some rails. NBD. It’s a pretty big mountain for the east coast with a small mountain feel. No frills. There’s no gondola, no village etc. But who needs it? I don’t. I need a mountain, that’s steep, groomed and empty when I come on 830 Wednesday morning and hunter delivers! The bar also has a good selection of reasonably priced beer and everyone is friendly. Def recommend if you’re looking for a close mountain to NYC with some serious trails.

Had the best time here! the course is well maintained. They have good deals (ladies day package on Wednesday!) so check online prior to your visit.
Ladies day package includes a lesson, lift tickets, rentals, and a $ 10 meal voucher. For I believe it was $ 66. This is good especially since the lift ticket itself I think is like $ 55.
It was freezing when we came and the slopes were kind of icy, I definitely busted my ass a few times. We had an awesome time tho. Came in to the bar for a break and some eats. Basic food, fries, pizza. Typical … They have a few restaurants inside but they were mostly closed… Also, my friend had this amazing hot tea with cinnamon sticks in it and rum, looked amazing and it was perfect for the ice cold day.
It was pretty busy in here!
I recommend checking online prior to your drive if you live far to assess the conditions of the slopes. Luckily we were okay but like I mentioned earlier. It was super icy. We had the best time tho. I see they offer fun activities in the summer, we will be partaking.

Everyone here was very helpful and accommodating! Had an amazing time that day! I ate at the «colonel’s hall and base lodge». I had a veggie pita and it was sooooo delicious! Took a break in between and stayed by the bar. Everyone here is absolutely friendly! I had an awesome bartender. He knew exactly what I wanted and needed to conquer the cold temps that day! Prefect resort for beginners to experts!

Great driving distance place to go for snowboarding/​skiing if you live in NYC. It takes approx. 2 hrs of driving +/​-​traffic.
I like this mountain because the trails are more advanced compared to ones found at Blue Mountain, Camelback, and Windham. You can get a good run out of the Black and Double Black Diamonds.
The Belt Parkway trail is good when you are still learning and want to improve for higher level trails because the trail is long, has good degree of ups and downs, some curves, and there are some places where you can pick up some speed to conquer your fears of wiping out. The only problem with the Belt Parkway is that it can get somehow crowded and you have to become aware and slow down for safety purposes.
Overall, this is a great place to go if you are not planning on going to the «Awesome» places in Vermont.

Came here with friends because we usually do the Irish fair that’s held on Staten Island. This was called the Celtic Festival. We got there early and stayed for mass that was held in the main tent. After that trekked around the area, which looks way different without snow, and checked out the sites. It was nice but there wasn’t many vendors selling Irish, Celtic, Nordic wares .
Instead it was filled with lots of fried foods of every kind like you were in a carnival. One of the highlights was the bagpipe competition which we enjoyed and went on for a while. Me and my bud took the lift to the top of the mountain ($ 12.00) which I enjoyed the view. Watched zip-​liners doing they’re thing. Everything is over priced and is just another tourist trap and no real heritage what so ever for which I was disappointed. Had a corned beef sandwich which was $ 10 bucks had 3 slices of corned beef and hard potato chips. Not even fries. Wife had to send hers back 2x because she can’t eat nuts or seeds and they kept bringing the sandwich with caraway seeds.
Glad I went but thought it would be a lot better.

Came here to hike.
1) It is the second tallest mountain in the Catskills.
2) The fire tower is fantastic.
3) The overlooks are amazing: John Rabb and Geiger Point.
4) The Diamond Notch Falls is also worth the visit.
5) Excellent loop hike.

Skiing ain’t really my thang, but rolling green meadows, fresh air and live music most certainly are.
Because of that, find me at Hunter Mt during the summer months and not, I repeat not when it’s frigid outside. If my friends drag me there during ski season I’ll be the gal in the lodge with her face in a spiked hot cocoa.
Anyhow, I’ve come up to Hunter a few times over the years for their annual Mountain Jam festival. Most recently, I went this past week and had myself quite the time. I’ve been to a bunch of fests and Mountain Jam is probably one of the best, and a large part of that is due to the atmosphere. There’s nothing better then laying out a blanket on the hill and relaxing while singing along to music and sipping on a cold brew. When you look in front of you, you’ll see the large main stage. Because you’re on an incline the view is always great. Look behind you and you’ll see massive pine tree coated mountains, ski lifts, blue skies and sunshine. This makes for an incredible fest experience.
I’ll heed you one warning, brace yourself for some cold temps at night! It normally drops below 40 degrees. Because the festival involves camping and early June nights are notorious for being cold in the region, I think that this fest should be moved to July or August, and I’m sure many would agree. Regardless of a change in date, I’m sure I’ll be making an appearance at Mountain Jam time and time again.

3.5 Stars: Here’s a review for first time newbies on the slopes coming from an amateur myself. I’ve never been snowboarding before so this entire activity and mountain is a foreign concept to me.
1. Wifey and I bought a package online for cheap: rental equipment (helmet, boots, board), lift tickets and lessons all in one. Large parking lots as we pulled in so finding a spot wasn’t an issue. Separate faster line for online reservations made the check in process quick. We got all of our equipment efficiently rotating through all the rental stations.
2. Finding the beginner lesson areas (levels 1 – 2) was confusing without anybody to direct us. My only issue is that lessons aren’t really formal in a group setting as expected. Instructors will approach you here and there to assist (or more often if you really look like you’re struggling). They’ll teach you to find your balance and ride in a straight line… stopping not so much. Thanks to random YouTube videos for teaching more than these guys.
3. Magic carpet ride time! (Level 3). Easy ride up a bunny slope, strap in both feet and off you go crying and screaming down the short hill because you don’t know what you’re doing. I mean, I’m not trying to spend all day learning in level 1 – 2. Live a bit, YOLO? The only way to learn is to do it yourself. Can’t say much about the lower lift (level 4) since we called it a day after Wifey wiped out one too many times and had a minor tailbone injury.
Leave your personal things in your car to make your life easier. Small square rental lockers are available though for $ 5 cash. Lines for everything weren’t too long especially since we went on a busy Valentine’s Day weekend. Oh and bring your own food too. The stuff here is overpriced cafeteria food.

Hunter Mountain is probably one of my favorite places in New York for winter sports!
For shy first-​timers, Hunter is absolutely beginner-​friendly. Highly recommended for newbies attempting to learn skiing and snowboarding here. Beginner Pack is a great deal that includes a two-​hour lesson, a lower level lift ticket, and equipment rentals. I appreciate the fact that the place is very well organized and easy. Everything from the ticketing booth, to the lines to get snow boots and equipment, and directions pointing to different trails. From my experience, the trails are very smooth and get its share of fresh powder after a snow fall. There are tricky slopes but it’s good to practice on as a newbie.
Blue Trail: Belt Parkway was really fun! It is the longest trail of Hunter. As a beginner snowboarder, it’s not difficult at all except for the flat areas along the trails. I highly recommend this trail to people to practice your leg power and the skills that you have learned.
For experts, there are Black Diamonds and Double Black Diamonds for you, too! 3,600 feet at the highest point. I am not ready for expert so I look forward to provide an update when I finally get up there!
Yes, sometimes there are crowds but because Hunter Mountain is pretty big, it leaves space for everyone to fall and get back up (please be cautious!) or zoom pass the crowds. From my experience, it gets less crowded as you advance through the trails.
Food is indeed very expensive but I have to comment that the big hot dog bun was pretty dam good after a few runs! There are very few food options at the lodge but the spots higher up in the mountains are better; motivation to get up there, much? Yup!

Small-​Medium size mountain, the «Belt Parkway» is a nice laid back ride with an incredible view. You must do this trail at least once. There are some steeper blacks, double blacks and a pretty awesome free style park. About 2.5 hrs from NYC, I suggest a multi-​day trip if you’re going to drive up from the city. I don’t know any good places to stay around Hunter unfortunately, I stay with a cousin who lives about 10 minutes away when I go up.
You can get deals on passes throughout the year, I paid $ 139 for a card with 3 tickets (use any day) and it came with 2 bring a friend tickets, where your +1 only pays about $ 20 – 30 or something close to that. I ended up getting 2 cards, for me and my girlfriend. We’ve bought 2 friends along with us this year so far who wanted to learn to snowboard.
They have a very decent learning area, from a very flat, short hill and a carpet ride for people who need to start out at the very, very basics and then even a short lift that gives them a few hundred feet of slope to get them moving towards riding some of the greens and blues at hunter.
The workers always seem very friendly and happy, the peeps at the lifts are always engaging and helpful.
Without driving to far out of the way it’s an awesome mountain!
If you’re looking at spots closer to the city, Hunter is worth the extra travel!

I came here 2 weeks ago to go boarding with some friends.
Great mountain if you are learning or if you are with a novice. Please and staff are super nice and they don’t mind if you take a tumble on the slopes or completely face-​plant when you are elegantly trying to get off the ski-​lift… probably becasue 40 ppl in front of you just fell too.
It gets crowded in the morning and in the afternoon. I’d bring my own food because there’s not a lot to offer here.
Nice trails.

There are some upsides to New York skiing.
Okay, Hunter is no Vail, or even Cannon, but might be on part with middling New Hampshire mountains such as Gunstock. Reasonable snow, reasonable steeps — though trail difficulty markings tend to be inflated one click.
Upside includes its lower absolute elevation; at 3,600 feet at the summit, don’t really have to worry about huffing and puffing with traverses or climbs. To be fair, there aren’t any traverses or climbs.
Downside is absolutely the lines. With just one frontside express lift, crowds are Killington-​maddening. Fortunately, most of the crowds seem to be scared off by «double black» ratings, leaving those slopes okay through lunch.

Since the Blizzacolypse* (or whatever the hell we’re calling this thing) is headed our way tonight, it only seems fitting to review a place that only improves in such conditions.
Hunter Mountain was the ideal spot to end my decade-​long, self-​imposed exile from the world of snowboarding. However, that was mostly because it was only a 20 minute drive from where I was staying.
The Good.
–The most efficient of systems for check-​in/​rentals. Seriously impressive.
–I think this is the only instance when the question, «Do you know that you’re goofy?» is inoffensive.
The Bad.
–I haven’t encountered this many sullen teenagers since I was a sullen teenager.
–Most of the food in the lodges is pretty awful. I’ll never eat your ramen, Hunter.
–The trails and fresh snow are both a bit limited, although it’s tough to blame that on anything but the region we’re in.
The Ugly.
–The awful stench of used snowboard boots.
–The inhuman aches and pains that I now get because I’m an old man.

Temper your expectations. For where we live, this place is pretty fun and offers some better than expected terrain. Because we live in New York, we inevitably deal with the same mountain hee-​haws.
Guy who bites it hard in the ticket line because he can’t maneuver in ski boots but tries to play it cool anyway was there.
Conspicuous dickhead snowboarder who likes to swear loudly and vape in the lift line because he’s a total badass was there in spades.
Out of control rental department amateur on a trail way too hard for him with his coat unzipped screaming «Whooo!» as he almost steamrolls your wife was there. I saw him twice.
Every family with ten or more kids on earth was there.
Braindead trophy Jersey Italian housewife in 9,000 $ one-​piece who can’t ski for sh*t was in the lodge getting hammered.
So go and have fun. Get ready to be any or all of the above people. Or get ready to avoid them.

Went on the first day of the season, when all the other local mountains were still closed. I probably would have given three stars, but the truth is, they worked hard to get up and running earlier, there were no lines, the lifts worked, the lodge was warm and I have no real complaints.
I had a horrible time booking and getting a rate on their website. I suspect that at midnight, they don’t give you the same rate as during the previous minute. I ended up booking a nonrefundable ticket for the next week by accident and an «unconfirmed» booking for the same day.
Customer service treated my unconfirmed booking as if it was just not there or would not honor it. However, since I was not charged, they switched the ticket I paid for to one for that day, fixing the problem. It was simpler than the complexity and thought that went into reading this. Commonsense by a nice older woman at the window made the experience worthwhile. I am a fan of Camelback but I have NEVER had such a good customer service experience there.
There seem to be pretty good intermediate trails.

I’m reviewing Hunter Mountain solely for Oktoberfest being that it was going on after we were done Zip lining here early Saturday morning. First thing we did was go and grab a beer which we had the choice of light or dark and the option to purchase an Oktoberfest mug for $ 5 extra so we all grabbed our drinks and started to walk around and check out the scene. The beer was pretty tasty, I got the dark beer which I was surprised I liked being I drink light beer. They had a lot of food vendors and trucks all around the area. The first thing I spotted was the potato pancake & baked potato stand, went rite over and picked myself up a piping hot potato pancake with sour cream and apple sauce. MAN THAT HIT THE SPOT! Crispy exterior was a soft interior and its perfect when paired with sour cream and apple sauce.
The next thing up on my list was the freshly made crepes. My brother and friend ordered one to split with fresh bananas, strawberries, nutella and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar. This crêpe was HUGE. We barely finished it. Inside the dining room they had a band playing polka music which I wasn’t drunk enough to dance yet so we kept it moving and took the opportunity to take some pictures of the crew in the giant chair located smack dab in the middle of the event.
They had a few attractions for a younger crowd that was nice some face painting, bounce house, and a few different carts selling scarves, sweatshirts, and pillows of all odd things. But that pillow was fabulous and I bought one lol. They had 3 alpaca on location for the stand with all things made from alpaca fur. They even had a baby one there which was adorable. They also had available the option to ride the lift to the top of the mountain for $ 11 but wasn’t about to do that.
Over all it was a cute little event which also had the option to test drive some new VW cars but you had to take a breathalyzer test and show up with 0.00 all across which none of us were able to do so we had a pro driver take us for a ride in the new GTI and the Jetta. It was pretty cool and we got a free flash light for doing the test drive. I’d def come back next year just for that potato pancake alone.
