The Copper Beech Inn

Can’t get enough of this place — excellent service, cozy atmosphere, delectable food. The bar is a perfect spot if you have a party of two or three. Serve full menu at the bar. Happy hour specials too!

Where do I start? Arrived yesterday afternoon to a warm reception by the staff. Had refreshments in the tavern, a classic «old» style venue. Move on to the room… love 211. Perfect for a one night getaway. Cozy and comfortable. Oh, had steak for a late dinner room service. Yum, cooked to perfection and cut like butter. Again, the staff who brought it were very nice AND had personality if you all know what I mean. Finally, this morning’s breakfast (OMG…the bacon is to die for) was perfecto, not to mention the great service from Holly. Oh, and yes, Holly’s got personality too. I can’t say enough about the environment but if the employees don’t bring that personality «spark» the wonderful environment won’t be remembered. WE’LL BE BACK!

I review restaurants based on ambience (4+ starts), food (3 – 4 stars) and service (2 – 3 stars).
This is a beautiful place, we arrived and we greeted warmly and the hostess set about to get us to a table and asked another hostess to bring us; though some of our party were clearly looking at other rooms (and admiring a bridal couple), so instead of warmly offering to wait and encourage to enjoy; we got the rushed glare of I need to seat you and even said so!
We sat at a table, nice view, our hosts were very happy. After waiting a moment for a server, we started to order drinks, and oh my, another glare of «could you decide faster».
Food ordered and we are enjoying ourselves. Ceaser salad with parmesan bacon excellent, Scallops and wiener schnitzel to die for. Though my wife’s chicken was over-​cooked.
We clearly talked about sharing salads amongst couples; it took a busboy to notice we were using the bread plates to share and brought other plates — where was our server — did she not listen?
so dessert, I ordered the crème brûlée, creamy, warm and absolutely delicious. But, I made it clear do not bring me the cookie with chocolate as my wife is allergic, but bring it to my friend who was having ice cream. You guessed it. Cookie came on my dessert and my wife opted not to share. You would ask, why not send it back, well you would have had to have come come buy and ask.
I ordered an espresso; full demi-​tas, hot and perfect.
I would go back for the ambiance, food; but at their prices I would have expected better, friendlier service.

We went here for Mother’s Day dinner. It was a fixed menu and most really enjoyed their meal. The ravioli appetizer was the best ravioli I have ever had. The desserts looked much better than they tasted, a bit disappointing. The atmosphere was beautiful. Our issue was that there was one vegetarian in the group and it was disappointing the restaurant did not have a vegetarian menu for Mother’s Day as the main four courses were salmon, filet, scallops, and duck. The chef tried putting together a polenta dish that tasted terrible, the waitress never checked back on the table to see how everyone was enjoying their food. When the vegetarian dish was cleared and clearly not eaten nothing was said by the wait staff — still charged the $ 70 even though that person didn’t really get a main entrée. I have never been to a fine dining restaurant without vegetarian options, even on holiday or special occasions with limited menus. When you are spending 70 a person you expect everyone to be able to eat something. Will try again if they include more options as the other food really was delicious.

The food was excellent — everything we had was delicious and the specials sounded amazing. Great ambience — so happy to have found this gem and will definitely add this to the list of favorite places to eat out.

One of the best Cosmo’s I’ve had in a long time! I feel bad that I didn’t get a chance to let the bartender know:(So whoever was bartending Monday ¼/​16– you rock! The calamari was pretty amazing also– perfectly fried w a side of kimchi and some super sauce, it all went together perfect!

We ate here for Christmas Eve dinner. We had a group of 17, and were expecting a «semi-​private» room with two separate tables. When we arrived, we instead were in a BEAUTIFUL large room to ourselves, with one big table that was set gorgeously. So much more than we were expecting. The service was impeccable, and the food was delicious. We sort of found this place on a whim, but we will absolutely come back for any future family meal! Wonderful, comfortable, special experience.

So glad we stayed here during our Columbus Day weekend last October! It was the last place we stayed during our trip and definitely a favorite. Delicious food the night we arrived (great steaks at their restaurant) and the room we stayed in (Room 216) was plush and comfortable. Big beautiful spa type of tub in the lavish bathroom. Had breakfast at the inn the next morning and it was pleasing to the eyes and the palate. Great time of year to go. HIGHLY recommended.
We really hope to return again.

Have had a number of really good diners here. A little pricey and the service can be iffy at times but overall a good dining experience for the area. Have not stayed in the hotel but have put up a number of guests here for business. No complaints from them but where are you going to stay in the Essex area?

My husband and I stayed here Sept 28−30^th 2015 and everything about our stay was fabulous! We were there to see our son who was performing at the Ivoryton playhouse. I booked the room #323 which I’d chosen from the picture of it online, but it was so much better in person! Much larger than the photo portrayed and had all the amenities you could want. Another pleasant surprise was that the amazing breakfast at the restaraunt was included! (Not just a coffee and croissant in the lobby as expected). The grounds are stunning and the staff was friendly. Everyhting about our room and the Comstock House building were immaculate. We truly cannot wait to return to this amazing hotel which was worth every cent of the price!

A few years ago we were very disappointed. Not anymore! Welcome back Copper Beech! Very pleasantly surprised. The service and food are top notch. 21^st century fine dining. Can’t wait to return!

Lovely restaurant! We had a delicious dinner here on our way back to NYC. A plate of the best steamed mussels we’ve ever had, a scallop & shitaki mushrooms, serviced on ouster cone appetizer and a lobster bisque were devilfishes! Great food, really good service and lovely interior. Make sure to stop by or get in the car & drive for a visit of this nice region & try the delights of french cuisine.

Started at the bar since we were early for our reservation. Had delicious oysters and a nice charcuterie that was very tasty, besides the dry aged meats and cheeses, it also comes with a small plate of gherkins, olives mustards etc.
For dinner I had the special wild boar on bone. This was delicious! Tender, porky but not gamey at all.
Very very nice place and waiter was on top of it all including drinks and re-​filling water!

Stayed at Copper Beech after a wedding. Beautiful place, inside and out. The staff is friendly and formal at the same time. Very luxurious, without being stuffy. The rooms are well appointed with period furniture, that’s actually comfortable. My bathroom has large standalone tub, and a walk-​in shower. Coming from NYC, it took a few minutes to adjust the absolute silence of the room after I turned in. Best nights sleep in forever!

My wife and I stayed here for a few nights and had a wonderful time. The staff (Peter, Gabrielle, and others) was so friendly and accommodating. Our room was beautiful and clean. The food was superb… the breakfasts were hearty, the dinners were first-​rate. And the mango mojito is perfect. Great for a getaway. We’ll definitely be back.

Loved our stay and Peter, the innkeeper, made it top notch! His attention to detail is amazing! Room was cozy, grounds ante beautiful! Loved every bit of it!

I wanted to give this place five stars. But the older bartender was one of the rudest people I have ever encountered. Anyways lets talk about the good. The hostess at the B&B is super nice! Our waiter in the restaurant was amazing! He told us everything about everything! He knew absolutely everything about the wine, entrees and the wild mushrooms that were picked that day! I would give him five stars! I had a filet with wild mushrooms and Todd has fish. The B&B you will want to spend more money to get a nicer room. We stayed the carriage house and it was very hotel feeling and when you first walked in it didn’t smell the best. I am guessing it is one of the older houses to stay in. I wish they would of gave me some insight. It was $ 253.00. Next time I would try the Comstock house. Also I hate those old AC units cut in the walls… they are so noisy and ghetto.
The breakfast was perfect! Eggs benedict was amazing. This place is the best if you are looking for great food! It is also super close to Essex. We will come back and visit CT and try out The Copper Beech in again. I hope to receive better service at the bar next time and choose a better room. The grounds are very pretty.

Before I start my review, I have to say, please ignore every review before May 2013. The old restaurant/​inn shut down, and renovated and reopened under new management. I never had the pleasure of going with the old management, but the dining experience on 7÷6÷13 was top notch.
I made a reservation for 6:00, as we had theatre tickets, so needed an earlier dinner. On arrival, the hostess was welcoming. When we said we had never been there before, she offered to show us all of the various dining rooms that we could choose from. The atrium was lovely but was a little warm with the sun pouring in… would ordinarily be quite lovely but since it was 95 degrees outside, we opted for a window seat in the slightly cooler main dining room. The restaurant was not too full at 6:00 (as would be expected) but filled up by the time we left around 7:45.
We sat down and our water glasses were filled right away. Our server came over and took our drink order, we ordered a bottle of wine. She came back quickly and as she was pouring, answered some questions about the menu. It is very important to note that the menu varied slightly from what was online. The chef tries to use all fresh/​local ingredients so I understand having to change things up here or there.
For our appetizers, I opted for the «Copper» Beet Salad, and my husband ordered the French Onion Soup. While waiting for our appetizers, a server brought us some crusty bread with butter with a grilled rosemary sprig on top. The bread was warm and fresh and quite tasty! My salad was so good. Beets, greens, shaved fennel, and some sort of Gorgonzola crème. The French onion soup was tasty as well, with hints of rosemary in the broth, it tasted very fresh.
For my main course, I had the pan seared day boat scallops with lobster risotto. It was presented beautifully and looked so fresh and summery. I couldn’t wait to dig in and forgot to take a picture until after I had eaten a scallop (oops!!) The scallops were huge and cooked to perfection. My only complaint was that the risotto was a little al dente for my liking. It needed about 3 minutes of additional cooking time, which would have also reduced the excess liquid on the plate. But the flavor was so wonderful that I ate it anyway! There were several huge chucks of lobster in the risotto and it was well seasoned.
My husband had the beef tenderloin, which came with potato au gratin and carrots. It was cooked slightly more than medium, but was still so juicy and flavorful that it was not an issue. Everything on his plate was tasty and all of the flavors complemented each other perfectly.
We decided to share a dessert and could not decide between the apple crêpe and the duo of chocolate mousse, so asked our server to pick the one she liked best. We were delighted to receive a wonderful warm apple crêpe. The exterior of the crêpe was crisp and flaky, sort of like it was made with phyllo, but inside was a perfect crêpe texture. The apples were perfectly cooked, and the cinnamon ice cream and spiced carrot purée were perfect accompaniments.
Our meal was wonderful, start to finish. The décor was up to date and the only odd thing was that they were playing rap/​hip hop music throuout the restaurant. It seemed like an odd choice but it was not very loud so most people probably did not notice. I stopped paying attention as soon as we had our wine, so it was not too noticeable. The service was all that you would expect it to be. We had never been under the old management, but we will definitely be back again. Maybe next time we will give the inn a try for an overnight stay. I would urge everyone to give the new Copper Beech Inn restaurant a try, it is definitely worth it!
