not only are there foods awesome, i have a very wonderful experience with the restaurants owners. last month my husband and I went to this restaurant to eat dinner. our good evening turned to be horrific for me when I realized I lost my wedding ring(I’m a newly wed so my ring matters the world to me). I asked them to just have our orders to go since i lost my appetite to eat and was panicking. I looked for my ring under the table where we sat at that time but unfortunately Can’t find it. I left the restaurant in tears. a month after, I received a msg on FB from the restaurant owner’s daughter informing me they found the ring and I can pick it up in my convenience. I was truly overjoyed! they went in to trouble to find me on FB! i knew that because i know when i left the restaurant i didn’t leave any of my contact information since like i said i was panicking at that time. When I went to the restaurant, the owner recognize me and returned my lost wedding ring!!! i will be coming back in this restaurant for the rest of my life!

The chef and staff are great. I like this place alot because the food comes out fast enough to stop in during my lunch hour and still make it back to the office on time. As for the house rolls, they are huge portions, as other reviews have said. Way bigger than at other places. I’m not sure which ones I’ve had but they were all delicious and unique. Additionally, there are so many different combinations of bento boxes which most sushi places do not have. The chef is creative and I appreciate the wide variety of dishes he combines together for different bento boxes. I feel that most sushi places now are like Chinese takeout places– everyone has the same exact menu. This is not the case with nagashima’s menu and one of the reasons they stand out as a great sushi place.

Review is based upon takeout only. Ordered a three roll lunch combo. My co-workers ordered rolls as well. Pro: The rolls are huge, at least 50% larger than from other area sushi places. Cons: Priced a dollar or two more per roll than other places, but if you come hungry you get what you pay for in quantity; and the sushi was far from being the freshest I have tasted, especially the yellowtail. I will give this place another try at some point, but I am not rushing back. I have been back for lunch twice since my first review, once eat in and the other take out. I am adding one star because quality was where it should be both of the times I returned. Service was also well-paced for a weekday lunch out of the office. Decent cold sake selection too.

Sushi wasn’t presented well and didn’t taste fresh. Appetizers weren’t impressive either. Had the gyoza, lobster moto and red roof roll. Not a place I would rush back to but not horrible.

My husband and I have FINALLy found our sushi spot on Long Island! It’s located in a strip mall and not fancy at all, but food delivers. The fact that the chef/owner is Japanese is a big deal to me because authentic Japanese is so hard to come across! The sushi rice in nigiri is done right, and fish is Fresh. We asked for omakAse(not on menu but we wanted all the chef picked specials) and portions were generous and we left full and happy. All the vegetable dishes were amazingly fresh and delicious– picked straight from their backyard garden as another Unilocaler mentioned. The tempura okra was one of my favorite dishes– not sure if it’s on menu — depends on which veggie is in season. Their udon was a perfect way to end the meal– noodles were chewy and broth was seasoned just right, also topped with the freshest veggies. It was a pleasure getting to know the chef and manager wife. Now I know the reason this place has been open for 26+ years– We can’t wait to come back!

We got a piece of bad fish and they would not refund our money. We threw that sushi out and took a loss. Let the buyer beware. We don’t go there anymore

This place is great if you’re serious about Sushi. Sit at the sushi bar and ask for a couple of pieces(Chef’s choice). The sushi chef is kind and loves to teach about sushi. He uses fresh vegetables from his personal garden… and that is pretty cool.

Sushi chef was awesome! He explained all of the different fish and the seasons. The«kick sauce» is a must try! Will definitely be returning– I am a big fan of sushi and this place was on point.

Good, fresh sushi, and convenient location right off the LIE. We only tried to sushi rolls, but the fish was fantastic, and the rolls were pretty big. We came immediately after opening for lunch, and they were still super quick with the orders and the food. The pricing was also fair.

Great service! Edamame is the best, by far! Try the special rolls, you can’t go wrong!

The food is good for what its worth. It’s worth skipping the constantly raved about Kobe steakhouse around the corner. But you do give up the friendly staff at Kobe.

Okay, first a disclaimer – I haven’t eaten at Nagashima in a few years. The reason why I haven’t eaten at Nagashima in a few years is the reason for the review and the one measly star. When you sit down at a table in a sushi restaurant, and something as simple as a piece of salmon nigirizushi comes to you and smells like a nasty fishmonger at closing time, you know you haven’t gotten fresh sushi. Then, you pick up the piece of tuna nigirizushi and it’s even more smelly than the salmon. That’s when you know you’re in a crap hole. Nagashima is one of those crap holes. If it has improved in the last couple of years, then I guess I will need to try the place again and retract this, but until that time, it’s among the worst sushi restaurants I’ve ever encountered.

We LOVE Japanese food(and have been fortunate to enjoy authentic cuisine throughout Japan) so we tried Nagashima after reading positive Unilocal reviews about the place having good food and a Japanese chef, and also seeing that there is chanpon on the menu. Sadly, the chanpon was a disappointment because the item served did not match the description. The«spicy» pork soup was unexpectedly BLAND and there was no pork to be seen in the bowl of «Chinese» ramen noodles.(A bottle of pepper was put onto the table — was I expected to make it spicy?) The price of $ 15.95 was HIGH. Half that price would be more reasonable.(Have you tried good chanpons at real Japanese restaurants?) On a brighter note, the chirashi($ 22.95) was fine. Also, other diners in restaurant ordered sushi/sashimi options that looked good. (We did overhear another table commenting that the vegetable dumplings were not good.) Side note: Perhaps there is more than one chef or the Japanese chef also speaks Korean.

Great food! Friendly staff! If you want real Japanese food, you should come here! And it’s not overpriced. Japanese man is making Sushi! And he told me he has his own garden and growing vegetables. I ordered Saba no Shioyaki(Grilled Mackerel). It came with salad, vegetable tempura, rice, miso soup and Sashimi! I was so full but everything was delicious! They even game me a fruit for dessert! Staff were very nice and welcoming! I’m definitely going back soon!

The Best Sushi restaurant. Makoto is an artist with food. Not only is it the best quality sushi, but his presentation is a work of art. He literally uses all the colors of the rainbow. My husband says he has the best raw bar, especially in the winter. Enjoy his premium saki with your meal. Our favorite sushi restaurant.

The sushi here is fantastic. The fish is fresh and the chef will give it to you straight. He won’t serve you something he doesn’t think is good. The chef is also the owner here and he takes a lot of pride in his food. Will he make you a crunchy spicy salmon roll if you order it? Certainly and with pleasure. But can you get something better here? Absolutely. If you want really great nigiri sushi, you’ll most likely have to ask the chef what’s good that day. The regular stuff on the menu is great too, but the specials are what set Nagashima apart from the rest of the pack. And the price? A fraction of what you will pay for similar fare in Manhattan. It is hard to get this level of dedication to the craft of sushi around these parts. I have a feeling those who reviewed Nagashima negatively simply aren’t ordering the right things. The chef here is the crown jewel of this restaurant, and he will guide you to a delightful meal if you let him! He may come off cold and snooty at first, I kind of thought so too at first. But sit at the sushi bar and strike up a conversation — he’s really very pleasant and downright funny. Been in Long Island for decades and a sushi chef for longer. You can’t stay in business that long without doing something right.

I recently read an article on «Time.com» titled«Is Unilocal for Morons?» where Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern is not pleased with Unilocal user’s reviews: specifically that too many uninformed users are posting up moronic reviews. While I cannot agree entirely with Mr. Zimmern’s view as I find most of the reviews are informative, but he’s spot on with the reviews I read about Nagashima. I went there based on the multiple favorable(4 – 5 stars) user’s reviews. First let me qualify by saying the restaurant’s staff is friendly, the fish is VERY fresh, and the Chef is actually Japanese. My 3-star rating is purely based on the food’s taste… if I had to factor in presentation, I probably would give it 2 stars. Aside from the freshness, the food at this place is average. I highly encourage users that gave 4 to 5 stars to try a few additional Sushi joints. And no you don’t have to go to Nobu or Katsuya and mortgage your house to experience excellent sushi, there are plenty of other great Sushi joints on Long Island, but Nagashima regrettably is not one of them.
