History

Established in 2001.

We bought the Inn in 2000 and set about completely renovating it and opening it on Presidents Day weekend in 2001. Spin and Margies is a work in progress — new tiling and outside sculpture pop up with regularity. We are situated on 5 private fenced acres. Beautiful cactus gardens abound around the property. There are horseshoes and bocce ball courts and places to lay around and star gaze. In fact we have been told by our customers that it is very hard to leave when the time comes.

Spin supplies all the original photography in the rooms. Spin is a landscape photographer formerly from San Francisco who relocated here because of his ongoing love affair with Joshua Tree National Park. He shows locally in many of the new galleries that have popped up in the last couple of years.

He also uses the suites as mini-​gallery spaces with shows that change regularly. Many of our guests have bought work from the rooms and look forward to returning to see his new work.

Spent 2 nights at Spin and Margie’s with my sister and we had wonderful experience. It was our first time in Joshua Tree and Spin and Margie’s offered the perfect mix of desert charm and homey cabin comfort. We had everything we needed in our room– ac, extra towels, coffee, kitchen utensils, toiletries, books, joshua tree maps, park guides… and a bottle opener :) The grounds are beautiful. It’s about a 10 minute drive from the joshua tree park entrance and is very close to shops and places to eat. We would come back to Spin and Margie’s in a heart beat! We accidentally forgot our music speaker and Margie mailed it back to us. What a sweet experience we had!

My husband I spent the weekend here and it was perfect! It really is the perfect desert hideaway. They have decorated the place so perfectly. The kitchens are nicely stocked with pans, plates, cups and anything you could need to cook. There is also really great outside space to play bocce ball and horse shoes. The hideaway is also very close to the park entrance! I can’t imagine staying anywhere else when visiting Joshua tree. And the morning we were checking out we met Margie, and she is absolutely delightful!

Enjoyed our stay at Spin and Margies. We wanted a quick affordable getaway for our anniversary. Found a deal on Livingsocial and it exceeded our expectations. Place was clean, private, and such a breath of fresh air from the city. We had cabin 4 and had our own private patio. However during our stay we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves! The attention to detail made this more of a personable experience for us. We saw so many little animals just within our patio from a roadrunner, kangaroo mouse, cottontail bunny, hummingbirds, and even bats at night. Patio was perfect to watch the stars, drink morning coffee, and drink some wine at night. It was perfect to come home to the air conditioner already set from a long day of hiking at Joshua Tree on day one and Salton Sea, Slab City, and Salvation Mountain on day two. At night we drove to Pappy and Harriet’s for some good live music. On our last day, Margie made sure to greet us personally and ask about our stay. After checking out we were able to drive down the street and visit the farmers market, have breakfast, and do some shopping. We can’t wait to come back!

Stayed here for a couple days and absolutely enjoyed every piece of it. It’s perfectly hidden, the décor is beautiful and unique, and the grounds are fun to explore and chill out in. All the details in the cabin– from the art to the linen to the dishes were carefully selected, which added to the beautiful yet comfy feel and made us want to stay much longer than we’d booked for.

Spin and Margies’s… Our little desert getaway. We’ve been staying here a couple of times a year since 2012. There are five suites, and we’ve stayed in every one except #2, the Mojave Wanderer.
Suite #5 is the smallest suite, positioned south of the other suites, and offers the most privacy. It has a coffee maker and small refrigerator but no cooking appliances. It has a small enclosed courtyard with a westward-​facing side bordering the undeveloped adjacent property, great for privately viewing sunsets.
All other suites have fully equipped kitchenettes. A gas grill is available. There’s a main courtyard with tables and chairs shared by suites 1 — 4. Suites 1, 3, and 4 additionally have separate enclosed courtyard areas.
Suite #4 is unconnected to other suites. Its main unique feature is its large bathroom with a deep bathtub.
Suite #1 is the largest suite, nice if you prefer «roomier» rooms, or if you want an additional room. It does have a smallish shower. It’s acceptably sized, but not built for two.
Suite #3 is smaller than suite #1, but it’s my new favorite because of its separate, very large, kitschy courtyard with plenty of outdoor furniture, burbling fountain, cactus garden border, and cement animal friends.
The first time we stayed at Spin and Margie’s, Mr. Dawn and I immediately wanted to stay put and enjoy the quiet grounds and eclectic décor. So now we always bring food, cocktail supplies, and plenty of ice. The entire place seems like an art installation, and there are plenty of great locations to have a quiet sit. Each suite has a unique décor with a southwestern mood, punctuated with flea market finds and industrial overtones. Sheet metal in interior decorating? Yes, please! There’s no place else like it, except my place after I remodel.

Spin and Margie’s makes me want to visit J.T. every weekend! It is a giant breath of fresh clean air, with a splash of color, and creativity. We stayed in cabin #5 this weekend and it did not disappoint! After all the site seeing adventures, it was nice to come back to a glass of wine, while lounging in our private patio, with nothing but the dark sky and stars to smother us. We will definitely be back!

This place was amazing. Such great rooms, property and MINDY! She was a sweetheart that made sure all of our needs were met. Went there for my nieces’ wedding (which was across the street). Highly recommend. Perfect for an entire group to still have their own privacy but plenty of space to come all together! Spin & Margies is a little goldmine! Loved it, everything about it!

Can’t believe such beautiful cabins exist in the middle of the desert in Joshua Tree! We stayed here when we visited Joshua Tree National Park because my boyfriend’ and I got a LivingSocial coupon as a gift.
To use the LivingSocial coupon, we had to make a 2-​night reservation, so we chose to stay Saturday and Sunday night. Spin & Margie’s has five different cabins and each one has a unique theme. We stayed in Cabin 5 and it’s smaller than the other cabins, but it was still beautifully furnished. They had a TV with cable, a mini stereo system, refrigerator, free WiFi, and an outdoor patio with reclining chairs. The bathroom had wonderful shampoos and soaps too.
If I could summarize my stay in Spin and Margie’s and Joshua Tree, it would be timeless. Coming from Los Angeles, it was nice being in a peaceful and quiet area. Time seemed to move more slowly than it does in LA, and I felt re-​energized every day I stayed there. You can also see amazing views of the mountains from your cabin. I can’t wait to come back and visit Joshua Tree, and I would love to visit Spin and Margie’s again.
As a side note, there isn’t a front office at Spin and Margie’s which means that there isn’t daily maid service. If there is an emergency, they do give you a number you can contact. However, my boyfriend and I were fine cleaning up the place ourselves. There wasn’t really much to clean anyways. The average price of a night at Cabin 5 is $ 145.00, but we got a discount through the LivingSocial coupon.
If you are looking for a great place to stay in Joshua Tree, and camping isn’t really your thing, then try out Spin & Margie’s Desert Hide-​A-​Way!

Everything about Spin and Margie’s is perfect! We stayed there on August 16 – 18 so that we could attend a concert at Pappy and Harriet’s (another awesome place). We were in room #4 — It felt like my own little hacienda! It was immaculate, the air condition was awesome, their recommendations for local restaurants (no chains please!) were appreciated. It was quiet and just the perfect low-​key getaway! I can’t stop recommending it to everyone I know!!!

I am not a typical Unilocal reviewer, but I felt compelled to write this review after my weekend at Spin & Margie’s. It was the PERFECT place — peaceful, relaxing, and off the beaten path. We absolutely loved every second of our stay there. Mindy was so helpful and went well above and beyond to help you plan a wonderful trip in Joshua Tree, beyond just accommodations, and prior to your arrival. She even came to check and see if we were okay/​needed anything during the 2 – 3 hour rain/​thunderstorm and gave us suggestions of what to do once it passed.
Inside the room itself, they have thought of everything. We bought paper plates, cups, etc. because we didn’t know for sure what would be there, but they have EVERY essential in the kitchen (can-​opener to measuring cups). The wifi works very well, good for us because we wanted to do a little research on the places we were visiting and seeing as JT first-​timers — though Mindy provides with all this information as well!
The ONLY downfall is there is no pool. I thought this would really bother me, but the room itself and the outdoor areas are so wonderful that I didn’t end up caring about it at all. However, if the pool is a deal-​breaker, they will set you up with the Joshua Tree Inn (?) or a different hotel that does have a pool? Overall, extremely satisified, loved the affordable living social deal, and 100% plan on going back.
I never wanted to leave, and I can’t wait to go back!

Found this place on the Internet while searching for a place to stay in Joshua Tree. What a great find. I called and got the scoop from Margie (aka Mindie). We wanted the big room, but it was occupied so she set us up with 2 smaller rooms. they use evaporative coolers instead of air conditioners and the rooms are comfy cool.
The grounds and rooms are uniquely and nicely decorated. Small kitchenettes and sitting rooms in each unit. Free internet. TV with DVD players. My family loved it.
The grounds are set up so that you could just hang out there if you wanted to. great sitting areas, grill, etc. but make sure you get to Joshua Tree NP!
Be sure to just take some time to enjoy the desert night sky every night while you are there.

This is a small establishment, 5 rooms, two of which are stand-​alone, and have private patios for dining, hanging out, or stargazing. The room we stayed in was ample, comfortable, nicely decorated, and downright comfy.
The bathroom and kitchen were very nicely decorated, and roomy. They provide utensils, and even some spices and cooking ingredients. There’s also a nice gas bbq if you want to «grill out» and a fire pit area. There is wi-​fi, a small flat-​screen tv, and they have a great variety of DVDs and CDs if you want to watch TV or listen to music; there are also lots of great books about the Joshua Tree area, and they have fact sheets with info on local restaurants, etc. Somebody took time to do very nice tile work in the rooms, and the grounds have lots of places to hang out. There’s also a lot of whimsical decoration, and the vibe is very relaxing. The swamp cooler and ceiling fan do a nice job of taming the desert heat, too. They’re also cool people, who want to make sure your stay is enjoyable.
On the other hand, though, the noise from the highway can become onerous, some of the outlets are 2-​prong, and at these prices, they really need at least a spa; even Motel 6 has a pool…
NIce place, but could use a few tweaks to make it really special.

I’d never been to Joshua Tree National Park so my boyfriend and I decided to make a weekend of it. Neither of us are campers so we needed a cozy place to stay. This was definitely it. We were in suite #4, which was a small free-​standing building that included a kitchen and a big bathroom with a great deep bathtub. We brought a bunch of food with us and it turned out to be a good decision because the second day of our stay, we were basically trapped in the room listening to the 40+ MPH winds whip around outside! Margie (whose real name I think is Mindy? is this this same person?) stopped by to check on us and offered to bring us anything we needed. She let us check out later than the normal check-​out time as an apology for the inconvenience. How sweet is that? We will be back!

Took my husband for his birthday and we had a fantastic time. The inn is close (within a few minutes’ drive) to Joshua Tree park, restaurants, stores, and movies but you definitely have the feeling that you’re in a cozy hideaway that nobody knows about. The room was clean and the kitchen was way more «stocked» than I thought it would be (i.e., there was olive oil, soy sauce, bbq skewers, etc.). Free wi-​fi, good selection of TV channels, and hot shower. It was very quiet and we felt like we had the place to ourselves. There were very high winds one day so that we couldn’t hike and Mindy said we could stay longer the next day with no extra charge to make up for the time we had lost. How great is that?! She was also very accommodating with the reservation process, as I had to change dates twice. Will DEFINITELY be back!

Really enjoyed staying here! Very reasonably priced and convenient access to the West entrance of Joshua Tree park. We stayed in the large cottage that has a private fenced in yard area. It was very comfortable, nicely decorated (a bit quirky), and has a fully equipped kitchen. Some things you should know that I didn’t see mentioned in any other reviews are below.
The wireless internet is free however the only area I was able to get a connection was outside in the courtyard. Inside the unit there was no signal at all. Luckily I had solid AT&T cell service so I just used my iphone for any web needs.
Although the cottages are off of the main road you still hear a fair amount of traffic noise at night inside. It’s not horrible or anything but if you’re looking for absolute quiet this isn’t it. Most likely you’ll be sleeping with the swamp cooler running anyhow and that does a pretty good job of drowning out the road noise.
If I were going to be in or near Joshua Tree I would definitely stay here again.

We’ve put family up at Spin & Margie’s for years now, and our family absolutely loves it here. Last weekend, my mother-​in-​law and her gal pal, Pat, drove 48 buttercream cupcakes and a handle of bourbon across the Mojave Preserve, from Las Vegas to Joshua Tree. Kind of a Thelma and Louise –slash– Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas style road trip, minus the ether, the bats, and the suicide pact.
This was my mother in law’s second appearance at Spin & Margie’s. She and GT’s whole family last stayed here for four or five nights in 2008, during our Joshua Tree wedding. They were then traveling with a toddler, who was quite taken with the color scheme and décor. The whole family was truly touched by Mindy’s kindness and flexibility with their brood. My mother in law is coming back — with the family, this time — in a few weeks and they’re once again taking up residence at Spin & Margie’s.
As a former tourist and current desert local, I’ve had the opportunity to visit, sleep in, and tour through most of the overnight facilities in the area. There’s a lot of diversity out there in price and amenities, and it can be hard to decide what exactly you want from an overnight stay. I highly, highly recommend Spin & Margie’s. It’s clean, funky, reasonably priced, and convenient to pretty much anything and everything you came for. Four solid stars.

Spin & Margie’s Desert Hide-​A-​Way is a cool little gem of desert hospitality. We stayed in the Catcus Wren cabin, a stand alone structure on the grounds. The cabin was great. The cool interior was clean, cozy and hip. They leave you alone here, which is what I want when I head out to JT. The shower water presure could stand to be goosed a bit, and I wish there was a pool. Otherwise, this place is a winner.

Typically when I do a hiking trip, I go as part of a group and camp. I don’t need foofoo travel. However, the last time I was out there, I was all by myself, so I needed a legit place to stay.
This place is a gem. For being by myself in the middle of nowhere, I felt very safe. The grounds are well kept, and the décor is eclectic and kitchy to go with the natural surroundings. I stayed in the Sonoran Traveler, which was cute, clean, reasonably priced, and had a little kitchenette where I made hot tea at night and sandwiches in the morning. I also had my own private patio area. The cabinets in the kitchen are stocked with some basic pantry supplies and tea. It was more than I expected, and I would stay there again for sure.
The downside: The heating system is pretty loud in this suite. Maybe it is fixed by now. Who knows.
