Danger Charters offers a variety of trips from Eco tours to sunset sails and even heavenly weddings at sunset. Our fleet is three 65ft traditional shallow draft schooners built for sailing the back country of the Florida Keys. Come with us as we navigate through shallow channels and sail up to uninhabited islands.

Our Eco Tours take you out to the Key West National Wildlife Refuge with captains that have sailed these waters for years. The crew will take you on a guided kayak tour around the mangrove canopy as we spot nature at it’s best.

While snorkeling in calm, smooth waters, you will see a variety of marine life. We will share with you some history of the Florida Keys and the Eco-​system.

Our Sunset sails are one of the best on the island. Because we have a great selection of wines from around the world paired with fine cheeses, imported and domestic beers, a beautiful sailboat and great personalized service.

History

Established in 1993.

Danger Charters is owned by Wayne and Lara Fox of Key West, Fl. Wayne started Danger Charters in the early nineties when he came across a Chesapeake Bay Skipjack (sailboat) located up the keys. He brought the boat down to Key West and started out doing Eco tours with it. He would take 6 or less guests out kayaking, snorkeling, and sailing in The Key West National Wildlife Refuge.

A few years later Wayne met Lara and she started helping out. They would sail the backcountry daily with guests, looking for new channels to go through, different species of birds, and fascinating marine life.

As the nineties drew to a end they decided to build their own sailboat from scratch. It is the only aluminum Chesapeake Bay Skipjack ever made. A 65ft shallow draft sailboat, perfect for the keys.

In 2004 they added a second sailboat to the fleet, Danger’s Prize. They would add a sunset sail which had wines from around the world and fine cheeses.

Today people all over Key West love Danger.

I have been working with Danger Charters for over 12 years now and fell in love with the company the day I stepped foot on the boat. I grew up on the water in North Carolina and have always had a passion for sailing though I did not do much as a kid.

Danger has given me the opportunity to do something that I love to do. Knowing that you gave someone the memory of a lifetime is definitely a priceless moment.

I have a little boy that comes out with me sailing sometimes on Danger and has learned how to snorkel and kayak with us.

In the time I have been here I have met many of guest and coworkers that I call friends today.

My hobbies are boating, catching lobsters, coaching and snorkeling.

The saying is true, «If you do something you love you never work a day in your life» I love it!

This was one of the best sunset cruises I’ve ever been on. I’ve sailed for years and when the captain delayed our departure for weather, I knew we were in good hands. The crew was fun, the sunset was great and a good time was had by all.

My wife and I had a great time on the boat. We took the sunset wine & cheese excursion. Started off with a great explanation of all the wines we were going to try. The service while we were on the boat was great and the crew made the experience great. We ended up making friends with the couple sitting next to us and had great conversation through the whole trip. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to enjoy a little time out on the water around great people!

My lady and I had a great sunset cruise 2⁄15. The Captain and Crew were great. Great service, safety oriented and FUN. I highly recommend the sunset cruise. When we go back to Key West we will try some other Danger Charters FUN aquatic activities. Vessel was «Sarah»

If you’re even considering doing the kayak/​scuba/​sailing tour, do it! Definitely the best experience we had during our visit. Being that there aren’t many nice beaches in key west, this is the way to really experience this beautiful, natural habitat.. The crew was awesome: friendly and very knowledgable about the history and natural surroundings of the keys. Scuba was fun and the kayak tour was chock full of an array of wildlife. If you’re at all a nature lover, check this tour out

Fantastic day at sea. Captain Nick and his Mate Jamie were awesome hosts from cast off to return. Food was good, snorkeling was fun and kayak trip was educational, informative and fun for a family of four. My ex and I took our two kids (9 and 12). The boat was terrific, the equipment good quality, and despite my expectations, the food was quite good. We’re gluten free and the menu didn’t disappoint. We told them ahead of time and they provided Udi’s wraps for our lunch. Wine was enjoyed, plenty of beer, and lots of soft drinks and water for everyone. Definitely recommend this trip if you have a day in Key West.

In all honesty I can’t really review the Wine and Wind tour itself because we were unable to go. However, I think it’s worth a positive review to note that the owner/​operator was extremely kind when my wife had a last second panic attack (decided a sailboat on a windy day wasn’t for her). We were given a full refund even though it was literally minutes before we were about to board!

Great Crew, great group of people, learned a lot. The kayaking was great, we saw a dolphin. The snorkeling was COLD, but we went in. It was my first snorkeling experience so I can’t compare it to other snorkeling areas. The crew was honest about the snorkeling conditions (it rained a lot the day before so the water was a little bit «dusty»). Great service on board, soft drinks, wine, beer, fresh fruit and snacks.

I wil starts by saying the the crew was wonderful from start to end. They were very friendly and knowledgable. Worked all the time to keep us safe and happy.
The reason my friend and I choose to go with Danger Charter is because the visitor center at Key Largo said it will be a mind blowing experience… we really looked forward to it. Our biggest disappointment was the snorkeling. I snorkeled in many places before, Islands of Hawaii, Mexico, Bahamas and Israel. But this time can’t be considered as snorkeling for the simple reason, we saw nothing!!! not one coral or fish… NOTHING!
Here we are by the 3rd. largest coral in the world, biggest in the US and yet they choose to stop snorkeling where there was absolutely nothing to see. The weather was cold and the water tempter was cold and yet we «dived» in excited to see nothing what so ever… it was very disappointing, especially since my friend flew from Israel, spend the money… not ok.
The kayaking was great, again, the team was awesome, they handle the whole group smoothly. Lunch and snacks were served. Fresh food.

An awesome experience! My husband and I took the sunset trip with them yesterday (November 2015), and we thoroughly enjoyed it!
The sailboat was very clean, modern and beautiful with real sails, which meant vey quiet as it cruised the water. We departed about an hour before sunset and we came back an hour after sunset. Just the perfect time to see the beautiful sky. Very serene atmosphere.
They offered food and drinks throughout the trip. Different types of cheeses, crackers, vegetables and dip, some sausage slices, and even chocolate!
The crew Darrick, Brian and Nate were all very friendly! They talked with everyone and have attention to everyone. They made the whole experience even nicer!
When we come back again to Key West we would not search anywhere, we would go back with this company whether it is for a sunset trip or a snorkeling trip, or any other trip they offer.
Go with them, you’ll love it!

The guys (Sean, Cody, Nick) were great hosts. Couldn’t ask for more personable people. Very friendly, nice, and full of random facts. My boyfriend and I had a great time on the all-​day tour.
If there was a complaint I could make it was that everything was too scripted.
Would definitely recommend these guys for a fun day in Key West.

We had an amazing time on the sunset cruise.
Even if we had been sober, I would’ve had the greatest time. So many interesting wines, such a beautiful view of Key West from the water. It was one of the high points of our trip. Upon boarding we were worried it might be a little too social and mingly for our taste. Not at all; everyone does their own thing and participates as much as they want to. Just go. Thank me later.

Visitors to Key West have almost limitless options for sunset cruises. Small charters on fishing boats, or the multiple companies offering sailing experiences. At first I was hesitant to plunk the extra cash for Danger Charters, but I talked myself into it and now I won’t go with another company.
Throughout the sail, the crew was super friendly, starting conversations with guests by asking actual substantive, conversation-​starter questions, as opposed to the more standard yes/​no questions. We even saw one of the crew in town a few days after the cruise and she initiated conversation with us again! Cool people. You can tell they really love their work.
When it comes down to it, these sunset sails are all just booze cruises enhanced by the fact the boats are nice and in a gorgeous location. So, the booze is an important element of the experience; well, Danger not only has the most generous pour, but they also provide quality stuff. Our cruise featured 9 (I think) different wines from old and new world producers and served in succession from sparkling, to white, to red and each graduated in intensity. You «taste» each one (that is, they pour you a generous glass of each) and then get more of any/​all as the cruise continues. That’s a lot of drinking in a 2-​hour timespan. We were already a couple drinks in when we arrived fro the cruise, and left this thing feeling pretty great about life in Key West. They also serve tasty snacks; cheese and crackers and other finger foods.
I also appreciate that Danger sets off from the Westin marina as opposed to the larger marina where the larger companies are based. It’s much less of a crowded tourist trap, and you’re on the water first, farther out than the other boats, so there’s little interaction with the obnoxious «Party Cat» full of empty nesters getting lit on Natty Light.
I now understand why this is one of the highest rated sunset cruise experiences available: the perfect balance of friendly and generous service in a small group that helps it to feel like a unique and personal experience.

What an incredible trip. We went on the Backcountry tour. Our crew was great, laid back, very knowledgeable about the local bird and marine life. We had plenty of time to enjoy a kayak tour to and around a mangrove island, snorkeling above stingrays and a variety of colorful fish and some time chillin on a sandbar with a cold drink.
Definitely worth the drive from Islamorada for the day for us! I would do it again. What a great time

Full day /​sailing /​snorkeling/​kayaking trip —
24 people on board including the crews (me and my family switched at the last minute causing the increasing in number of people)
The crew were very professional, interactive and entertaining during the boat ride. Drinking beers/​wine, Sandwich, snacks and fruits were offered to make the ride more enjoyable. The crew took the time to chat with everyone and make us all feel comfortable
My family and I were all first time snorkellers, they gave us all the information and tips we needed to enjoy snorkeling. Helping us gear up and lead us out to the open sea. There isn’t that much to see (we saw sting ray and small fishes) but the experience was very fun. The crew was helpful and patient
After snorkeling, we sailed over to a mangrove to kayak. More fun history/​ecology lessons while we kayaked. It was very informative and kayaking through the mangroves was awesome.
Overall very great experience with them! I would definitely choose Danger Charters again.

We have used Danger Charters a total of three times. Every time has been an absolutely outstanding experience. On our most recent trip to Key West did the ½ day snorkeling and kayaking trip one day, and the sunset wine cruise the following with several other couples down from Tampa.
Both were captained by Amelia, who was excellent on both occasions. The rest of the crew were equally top notch. Knowledgeable, friendly, open, and truly engaged in what they are doing.
I would highly recommend Danger if you are visiting the Keys. It isn’t possible to rate Danger without comparing them to Fury. Fury runs catamarans out of the same harbor, and they pack them to near standing room only. We heard them referred to as «cattlemarans» by several locals. Danger caps their boat at a comfortable capacity, and the experience is outstanding.
Also, for those visiting from outside the US, the crew rely on tips as a major part of their income, so plan accordingly.

Really awesome experience! Everybody was awesome and there to make sure everyone had a great time!
Captain (whose name I embarrassingly cannot remember) had a deft touch of the helm, ensuring my wife, who had up to that point never not gotten sea sick on any body of water, thoroughly enjoyed herself and didn’t get sick at all. Wine and cheese was great and the sausages and hams were perfect compliments. Just a great experience on every level! These guys deserve the 5 stars!

Highly recommended! We (family of 4 with two kids 10 and 7) had a wonderful time on the «Danger» with a very friendly, knowledgable and professional crew of three. Nice wooden sailboat, not overcrowded, nice snorkeling experience and a spectacular kayak tour around a mangrove island. You don’t have to be an expert in anything, but you won’t be dissatisfied if you are either. Nice people with us on the boat as well. Fresh fruit, snacks, beer, wine and sodas are served. So just bring your swimwear, flip flops and a towel and you will spend 5 very memorable hours off Key West.

EMBARKING —
— Relaxed and orderly, two different color boarding passes were handed out when you checked in. Everyone with white tickets went with one person down one dock, and the people with the green tickets were brought down another dock so everyone didn’t plow into one another and get on the wrong yacht. There were two vessels heading out for this evenings sail, both of which were anchored side by side.
THE CREW —
— The skipper and crew, Sean and Cody, where easy going and very nice hosts. Once we were at sea, the skipper turned on some light music at the helm which was very much appreciated. Tipping was casually mentioned as we disembarked but not in a forceful or repetitive manor.
THE TRIP —
— Best I’ve been on so far. Once underway we were able to walk around with ample room to move about. For me, once the captain cut the engine and the wind took her sails, it was the most beautiful and relaxing experience I think I’ve ever had. I could imagine myself in a lazy hammock while the sun was setting and birds were circling about. Now that I’ve had a first hand taste of it, sailing is definitely my cup of tea.
REFRESHMENTS — A-​Okay… but not a home run for quality
— The different wine selections were explained and passed around one at a time. From sparkling wine straight through to the richer, more bold Cabs, there were four white and four red presented. The whites were all on the fruity sweet side, not my particular choice. As Sean and Cody went around, you had the option to taste all wines or stick with your favorite. For me I stuck with the sparkling wine. I did try the Pino Grigio and Chardonnay offered, but it was not to my personal taste. My husband started with a cold beer along with a few tastings, and settled with the Cabernet Souvignon.
— Assorted cheese, crackers and caprese salad sticks were passed around. Uneventful, nonetheless adequate.
COST — $$$ — Best for adults
— This is on the high end in comparison to other companies out there and what you get for the overall price, but an absolute wonderful experience. It definitely depends what you are looking for and what type of evening you would like to have. Sometimes less is definitely more.
I would definitely book on Danger again. Awesome vessel.
SIDEBAR — I just checked out their web page and there is an actual video for this trip which is pretty accurate of the experience. No overcrowding which was nice.
