We are a full service dental office. We specialize in many areas — fillings, crowns, bridges, and implant restorations as well as TMJ and either minor or major problems associated with jaw. To help maintain or stablilize your bite or to protect your teeth we offer both night guards made specifically for your mouth as well as snore guards for those that are interested. We specialize in cosmetic dentistry offering veneers, cowns, teeth whitening, and bonding, working with some of the best dental technicians available to obtain beautiful and natural looking results. We have two dental hygenists who provide excellent preventitive care, to help you maintain your teeth and mouth in the best possible condition. We love providing a family friendly enviorment, and welcome everyone looking for excellent dentistry with a friendly and personable staff.

Established in 1981.

Dr. Matosian bought the existing practice of Dr. Kenneth Shipstead in 1981. He has been practicing in the La Mesa area since 1977. The majority of his staff have been serving the community along with him for 30+ years.

Dr. Matosian did his undergraduate work here in San Diego at UCSD. Following that he entered USC Dental school graduating in 1975 with honors. After graduation he moved to Switzerland where he did children’s dentistry. Upon his return he opened his own office in 1977.

Dr. Matosian has always placed a high priority on both education and Continuing Education. He has been a faculty member at USC dental school. In addition he himself has taken numerous continuing education courses, completing the five part program at the well-​respected Pankey Institute of Florida, as well as courses with Dr. Peter Dawson. Currently he co-​directs the Odontic Seminar a Continuing Education seminar.

In additon he has maintained membership with both the American and California Dental Associations. Initially he served as a member of the CDA Peer Review Committee in San Diego, eventually serving as its Chairman.

Wow. I didn’t know you could write a review for a dentist. But after reading the only other review from Ashley K., I feel in the interest of fairness that I must contribute my 2 cents worth. My family has been going to Dr. Matosian for 10+ years. I’ve had some major work done and have no complaints. I’ve had periodontal problems for years and through his and his hygienist’s care and attention my «pockets» are reduced to a level I haven’t seen in years. Other dental pros have seen his work in my mouth and notice that it is quality stuff.
If someone’s prime factor in choosing a dentist is price, then you should get prices up front, not complain about them after the fact. George (that’s what he prefers to be called) is not the cheapest dentist in town. He has an established practice with an established client base and can charge more for his quality service than some new guy just starting out. I feel the quality is worth the price.
My experiences have always been positive, not always pain free, but seriously, what dentist can claim to be pain free. Oh, and the staff, especially the receptionist, is about as nice and polite as you could find anywhere. It is a family atmosphere where everyone is treated like family. And that is a good thing.

Dr. Matosian and his staff are great. After having some very bad experiences with other dentists I had become jumpy about going. After my experiences with Dr. Matosian my anxiety is pretty much gone. The quality of care and his patience with me was awesome.

My inner 8 year old self would hurt me for saying this, but I actually look forward to going to the Dentist at Dr Matosian’s. I don’t know if it’s the friendly family atmosphere, or the free toothbrush at the end of the visit, but there’s always a positive vibe in the office, and the staff is always professional.
I first came to see Dr Matosian after my previous dentist said I needed 5 cavities filled after already having 3 fillings the previous visit a few month earlier. After being suspect of these cavities actually existing, I went to see Dr. Matosian on a recommendation from a friend. A quick exam from Dr. Matosian showed I had no cavities at all, saving me hundreds of $$s.
I quickly switched over, only to have another incident where I avoided loosing a tooth, when Dr. Matosian salvaged a rotted filling from a previous dentist.
These instances proved to me that Dr Matosian has my best interest in mind. If you don’t have a good Dentist already, check this guy out.

I just got my bill from this dentist– AFTER insurance, I had to pay $ 86 out of pocket. My insurance is quite generous, and will pay a maximum of $ 96 for the exam, $ 108 for xrays, and $ 93 for the cleaning. Matosian charged $ 175 for the exam, $ 115 for the xrays, and $ 93 for the cleaning. I called my insurance thinking something must be wrong, as this is my first time at this dentist. With all the other insurances I’ve had in the past, I’ve never paid out of pocket before at my awesome dentist back home. Insurance told me that to give an example of how «ridiculous» Matosian’s prices were– the average dentist in this area charges $ 23 for the exam. Matosian charged $ 175! I then called the dentist office to figure out what went wrong, and I got some attitude and comments about «quality» being reflected in the price. My hygienist was visiting with her daughter standing in the doorway while cleaning my teeth. Not to mention it was the only painful cleaning I’ve ever had. The receptionist said that the initial visit is 2 hours long. I didn’t time it, but I was there way less than 2 hours, and about half of that was waiting while everyone was visiting with the dentists family who was in town for the holidays. Very very disappointed in this dentist. If I’m going to have to pay $ 86 out of pocket, I want quality. Not to mention their xray machine is the most archaic piece of garbage I’ve ever seen at a dentist. The bite wings are 4 inch pieces of plastic that are completely painful– not like the disposable bite wings that have been around for the last decade. I left this place in pain, my teeth didn’t feel as clean as they do at other dentists, the receptionist is rude, and the equipment is from the 60s. Avoid.
