I’ve been here on two occasions. Once to enjoy tea and some finger foods, and once to buy some of their delicious baked goods! I dared myself to have afternoon tea with my gf at this place. The gf had a tea craving, so why not! I know it’s all pink and girly, but man, what do you expect. I had to man up! There definitely were a lot of old people enjoying this calm and peaceful environment. I do have to say, this place isn’t really made for big people, as the tables were really close to each other. But it is a converted house, so it’s expected. We were seated, and ordered from the lunch menu: ~ Tuna Melt($ 13) with a side of green salad. This had real albacore tuna with capers, onions, and melted cheese on top of a nice crusty sourdough bread. Like holy wow! Unexpectedly one of the best tuna melts I’ve had in a long time! Probably because I gave up eating bread, and all of it combined was just spectacular! ~Tea and sandwiches plate($ 28). This had the three tiered platters of goodies. Small sandwiches like the egg salad, cucumber, chicken salad, cheese, and desserts. It was good, but I expected more out the the price. The dessert pieces were definitely a treat. The gf’s tea choice was rose tea which was very aromatic and delicate. I couldn’t help but to stick my stupid pinky up. Believe me, it was hard to lower it with those tiny tea cups. As for the bakery side: ~ Macaroons! A definite LOVE!!! Pistachio, coffee, Earl Gray, salted caramel, strawberry, and a few others were nice and crusty with the right amount of sweetness. Not overly sweet, and not overly weak where the whole macaroon crumbles into pieces. Depending on flavor, some of them, if not most are way better than La Boulange, but not as good as Bouchon Bakery. ~ Fruit Tart! Awesome!($ 6) The crust was perfect, not too hard; Made just right, with the fresh blackberries and raspberries and the nice glaze made for a delightful treat! ~ Chocolat Diablo($ 6) Wow! This tart was excellent! The chocolate shavings on it was just simple and classic. Overall, their teas are superb, and their prices are some what up there. Their menu offers so many satisfying things, that gives me good reason to return. Or if I want to give the gf a treat, I’ll give the gift of macaroons instead of flowers! :) I dig it! I’ll be back!

I also wanted to love this place. it’s so cute totally chic atmosphere, the tea is even really good. But I can’t get past the service. It was horrible. I’m writing this as I’ve been sitting here waiting for the bill for like 15 minutes. Also. Who just assumes that one person can finish a whole pot of tea? I ordered tea, thinking I would just get a cup and she brings out a whole pot. I can’t even drink that much liquid. When I explained this to waitress, she got huffy and and rude. You just don’t treat customers like that. 15 more mins and she comes and asks if we’re ordering anything else. EVENTHOUGH I ASKEDFORTHECHECKALREADY. It’s a shame… This place had such good potential. If I could give negative stars I would. Still don’t have my bill.

This place is très adorable! It’s almost impossible not to feel like a lady when you walk in. TEAS I sampled four teas(all were delicious): Darjeeling Rose Camellia*: hints of soft rose petals mixed with spice and black tea Peach: tasted just like a fresh, ripe peach French Breakfast*: hint of chocolate malt and black tea(tasted like hot cocoa when you add milk & sugar) Mango: much like the peach, tasted like a fresh, ripe mango. *teas are imported from France VENUE Imagine seated in a cozy room right next to the fireplace, with a large velvet chair on the side. The walls are painted pink, with vintage frames and pictures. Throughout the bakery, small trinkets are displayed for sale. Would come back.

A review as a series of recommendations to management at French Bakery: 1) You have a beautiful little café in a prime spot in Lafayette but in the 6 years I’ve lived here I never realized you were there. 2) You open at 9am, which means the«just dropped children off at school» crowd will pick either Starbucks or Peets or Chow for a coffee/snack. because they’re open. 3) Every table is set up for food, and yet the seating area is usually empty, even though I noticed a decent amount of walk-in/take-out traffic. Leave some of the tables barren. especially the counter room and the little room behind. Let us come in and sit at a table with a book or laptop(since you have free wifi) or newspaper or smartphone without having to push away dishes and cups and saucers and napkins and forks and spoons. It’s uninviting. And when we do come in and push them away to sit and enjoy a $ 10 pot of tea, come and clear it away. Give us the elbow room we’ve clearly signaled we want. 4) Brunch, ordered just after opening on the weekends, can’t be served cold. Neither the eggs, nor bacon. Seriously. 5) The tea is delicious. The pastries are great. Summary: Expensive, but not prohibitively so. Plenty of potential, but someone there has to get serious about the café part of the business.

I wanted to love everything about this place. It’s cute and kitschy and I am sure the food on the regular menu is tasty good. I will never know because I won’t be returning. I was forced to select the afternoon tea. We came here to celebrate a birthday. When reservations were made the woman at the tea house asked if we were going to partake in afternoon tea. The person making the reservation said yes(of course – it’s a tea house!), not knowing that she was committing us all to pick one of two afternoon tea options($ 28 or $ 32). I will give you it was a misunderstanding on both parts. Upon being seated and ordering our teas, the waitress said, I will bring out the Parisian selections. We were all shocked and said, no some will be having that and others ordering off the menu. She left the room and returned with her manager. The manager is the reason for the low star rating. She was rude, threatening and if it weren’t a birthday I would have walked out on her in mid sentence. She said condescendingly that we could of course order what ever we wanted but that no matter what we ordered she was going to charge us for all the premade Parisian selections that had been made for us. We started to contest and all she did was get louder and more in our face. Since 4(of 6) of us had planned to order the lunch time tea, it was only one person that really had to change their mind to order it plus another person with an allergy issue. We did bring up the 1 allergy among the group: 1 person could not eat dairy. After deliberation and visual huffing the manager finally agreed to take off one Parisian tea and let that person order what they wanted. The tea sandwiches were premade. The bread was stale and chewy. The cucumber one was dried out and the cream cheese spread had started to turn hard. The little warm bites were ok. The cakes and pastries came out late(15 min or so after we were done with everything and the table cleared) when they should have come at the same time. They were good though. They kept coming through our room to go into a bigger room with a larger party even though both rooms had their own doors. This wouldn’t have been such an inconvenience except the constant excuse me and us scooting out of the way for them to get by became obnoxious after the 3 or 4th time. Then 3 times people came into the room and asked about highchairs when visibility there were no highchairs in the room and we didn’t have any children in our party. The one great item were the scones! I hate scones usually – dry hard old things that crumble with every bite. These were wonderful and a little soft and the condiments that accompanied them were great too! The scones give it two stars. Again, wanted to love this place but I can’t excuse bad service nor can I excuse a threatening manager who berates her customers.

Having been here twice now with a good friend, I wish I had time to stop in for tea EVERY time I’m in the Bay Area. On our first trip out there, the service was a little slow, but because we intended our tea to be leisurely, this wasn’t an issue for us. We ordered the Champagne Tea, and were completely stuffed and happy by the time we left. We enjoyed the entire spread, and drank so much delicious tea, we thought we might burst(I think we had four pots total of different types). On our second trip, my friend was pregnant, so we obviously opted to just get the afternoon tea. We were equally pleased on this visit, and the service was even better because they weren’t quite so busy. Again, we got a ton of different bites, their clotted cream and lemon curd are delightful, and we left completely sated. Our only concern on our second trip was actually pertaining to a group of customers who came in toward the end of our tea and sat at the table behind us. From the moment they walked in, they were complaining about EVERYTHING. It was later in the afternoon when they arrived, so the bakery had begun to run out of things, and these people could NOT believe it. They were going on and ON about how THEY’VE had afternoon tea ALLOVERTHEWORLD and have never had this issue in France or anywhere else. They were DRIPPING with entitlement, and all we could do was give a sympathetic nod to the server on our way out. My friend was particularly impressed with these women’s credentials as worldly tea aficionados, having grown up as a dual citizen of England and Sweden, and only having moved to the US as an adult. I think she knows from a good afternoon tea, kthx. We paid $ 28 each, and as I said, the spread we received was PLENTY. I think we get what we pay for when we come here. When my only complaint is about a group of other customers being obnoxious, I think I’ve found a good spot.

After a lovely brunch and a sess of Yoga in the Park, I decided to stop here for a treat with my beau and my friend Sarah. I remember saying, there is a place over here that has great lemon tarts, it’s a French bakery but I can’t remember the name. Then BAM, we see the storefront and laugh out loud at the creativity of the name. My beau joking suggested we should wear nametags that say«The Asian Customers», har har har. We decided to try a few macaroons and of course the lovely lemon tart I was after. The earl grey macaroon is a must! I personally found the salted caramel and the pistachio too sweet and I don’t prefer sweets that are too sweet if that makes sense. The lemon tart was perfection. The lemon filling tasted fresh, well balanced in sweet and tartness, the crust was buttery and crumble and the meringue, oh God, the meringue was not too gooey, not too sweet, but this perfection of chewy, sticky goodness. Thank goodness I only indulge like this once in a while or my ass might not fit into my lululemon pants anymore. Anywhoo, a must if you want some French bakery goodness. Service was warm and friendly as well. Food coma optional.

Best lemon tart EVER! Fluffy, butter filled, rust. Lemon crème that was not too sweet, not too tart, not too gelatinous. Just right in every great way possible! The meringue… oh my goodness, the meringue. HEAVENLY! The salted caramel and earl grey macaroons were delicious! Try the salted caramel with their excellent espressos! I will walk, run, BART over to this place all the way from SF to have the lemon tart, macaroon, espresso afternoon yummies. Services rocks. Must go after yoga in the park!

This place is about two driveways away from the popular square with Chow in Lafayette, but The French Bakery holds its own. Stationed as an old-fashioned cottage serving up tasty afternoon teas, pastries, and sandwich platters, it’s a nice treat in suburbia. My friend had the French Breakfast Tea and the French Onion Soup & Panini sandwich(brie + ham) – she’d just returned from a stint in Europe and missed France. and enjoyed the food. I wasn’t super hungry so I opted for the Champs Elysee Tea: Scone with lemon curd & cream + 1 pot of tea. The pots of tea are generous and prices aren’t ridiculous. We sat outdoors comfortably, though I suspect in the summer it might get too hot.

So much potential!!! Perfect location Good parking Homemade food — the lemon curd is fantastic One of the few places for afternoon tea on this side of SF But, I won’t be back and here’s why: 1. The prices were way too high $ 28 per person(more than most SF prices) 2. SMALL portions. It was almost like everything was miniature… Even the tea pots are small. 3. The service was not very attentive(although we adored our server, we were left asking for multiple things like water and a napkin) and it felt like she was no where to be found(maybe working in the back doing double duty? With only about 30% occupancy for a beautiful spring Saturday afternoon, I know now why the place was not full. :( There truly is a demand for a great ladies lunch or Afternoon Tea place so I do hope they make adjustments and get some people in the door! Note to the owners: the website is lovely(honestly, it is great) but I could not find the phone number anywhere and ended up leaving to go to google to find it. Also, there was no toilet paper in the bathroom so I would suggest a large basket or small cabinet with an ample supply.

We’ve been here a few times before. I would’ve given this place 5 stars instead of 4. However, they get 1 star deducted because they’re not always good at calling you back whenever you leave a voicemail for them to make a reservation. Also, another reason contributing to the deduction is the fact that you only get one complimentary refill on your pot of tea. Lisa’s Tea Treasures in Menlo Park lets you have as many refills as you want, which is fantastic! The service is alright. Sometimes it’s a little slow, but I’m not going to complain about it too much because the servers are always friendly, and they get my order right. What I’ve tried here: – Champagne Tea $ 37 – Signature warm scone with jam, clotted cream & lemon curd Four freshly made Tea Sandwiches Two warm savory bites Assortment of cakes and pastries Flute of Scharffenberger Rosé Sparking Wine Pot of tea Verdict: AWESOME! – Artisan Cheese & Charcuterie Plate $ 14 – Can’t remember exactly what is included. There were 3 different kinds of cheese, which were all very good. 4TINY pieces of salami. I wish there was more salami included. Also, included were some kind of berry, dried apricots?, pecans?, some kind of sprout looking thing. Verdict: TASTY! But needs MORESALAMI! – Croque Gourmand $ 14 – Hot open-faced on rustic sourdough bread with ham, sautéed garlic mushrooms, and Gruyère cheese Verdict: ABSOLUTELYDELICIOUS! – Chocolat – A lovely black tea flavored with chocolate — like drinking a calorie free cup of chocolate – French Breakfast – Full-bodied black teas produce a rounded taste of malt and a hint of chocolate Verdict: LOVE both these teas! I highly recommend them!

Hidden converted house next to busy Chow. love the trees and greenery envelopimg the place. High tea party of approx 8 in the reserved library room inside. Had I my druthers, i would take it all al fresco by the wonderful tables. Bone china teacups. Service was extra agonizingly slow that particular Saturday. Painful — - teapots were those thick, cheap ceramic kinds. Some teas were served extra hot and nice; others, tepid around the corner just after a few sips. Interesting flavors:6 tried Spanokopita and quiches served.(were they purchased?) Scones were ok. Clotted cream, lemon curd, and strawberry jam condiments. Tea sandwiches: cuke, chicken salad with tarragon, egg salad, ham Server was kind, patient, friendly, and attentive. Timing was off though. Long periods of waiting. Dessert tray included lemon citrine tart, flourless chocolate slices, and some pistachio macarons. Ok too… not OMG quality. Overall, above average!

The two stars are for the really high quality scones. The negative 3 stars are for the following. I had sent my mother in-law here to get some scones for a brunch she was throwing, shes not much of a baker or party planner. Ok –1 star for losing her order. Then when it was finally ready they were out of the clotted cream she ordered. –1 star for having a very snotty attitude when I went to pickup the cream. –1 star for charging $ 5.50 for a very small amount of the condiment. Ladies you screwed up the order, made us make another trip into a crowded area on Sunday morning. Heres some free advice, be nice, when you screw up comp the cream. Sheeeesh!

Comment puis-je aimer cette boulangerie… Oh do I think I have found a new little jem. Its birthday time for this birthday girl and even though I’m all grown up(well at least for the most part), I still look forward to getting some specialty cake from some specialty bakery. This year The French Bakery was the lucky one to make my birthday cake wishes :) I can’t believe I never discovered this place until now. This place reminds me of a hidden cottage nestled within some little village similar to something you would vision in a little fairy tell scenery… Maybe exaggerating a bit but not much. This place is as girly as it gets. Quaint, dainty, victorian, english tea party ambiance, perfect for holding a tea party for any special occasion. I went on line to view there cakes. I then called in and pre ordered a 6 inch Vanilla Bean cake with a Vanilla French Butter cream filling(I am a vanilla kinda girl) I asked to have Happy Birthday Shannon written in Chocolate. The girl helping me was very friendly the total came to $ 32.00 which serves six. I arrived a little earlier then my scheduled pick up time, so while waiting, I couldn’t help my self but have a cup a tea :) This place is pricey so beware! But, It was my day and someone else paid for it :) They have quite the tea selection to choose from with most of them being above your ordinary standard tea flavors. I decided to got with a cup of the Blueberry Merlot tea being I am a blueberry Merlot type a gal. My cup of tea was priced at $ 5.00(I was not aware of this until I got rung up) so enjoy it to every last sip :) My cup of tea was given to me in a nice ornate english cup. All situated on a little plate, along with the cute tea bag it came in. I added a little cube of sugar(they have the classic cubed sugars with little mini tongs to pick it up as well as splenda and additional sugar substitutes) My tea enveloped into a beautiful deep merlot red color in to the hot water and gave off an very flavorful aroma. The tea was nice with settle amounts of blueberry. My pallet could not detect but a very distinct hint of merlot… guess its the color of the tea they are referring too. Anyhow, My cake turned out Fantabulous!!! Vanilla bean cake was moist and incredibly flavorful with its rich vanilla bean taste. Vanilla French Butter cream was creamy and made love with the rest of the cake beautifully satisfying in vanilla lovers fantasy! Overall, the place is pricey and not a place I would stop by on a regular basis to get my tea fix on, though, the service was extremely accommodating and personable and so far for specialty cakes, they are winners! I will be back on the next blue moon :)

*On Wedding Cakes: The French Bakery provided such a wonderful wedding cake for our wedding! Lynn runs the bakery – she bakes her own cakes and runs the business aspect of it too! With that said, she is very busy. Our cake tasting appointment ran a little later than usual, but were rewarded for our patience with a wonderful tasting and an opportunity to speak with Lynn herself. My husband and I were looking for a simple, elegant cake, and that is exactly what Lynn provided for us! We had a toasted hazelnut cake with praline butter cream, and a chocolate chiffon cake with mocha buttercream. We didn’t have to worry at all about the arrival of our cake and the details – it simply showed up at our reception, and we loved it! I will tell you now that if you intend to be very specific about decorative details and a customized, unique cake, you’ll want to be ready to explain exactly what you’d want and how. Lynn seems to be a bit intimidating but I really think you’re just looking at the strength that got this woman to where she is now! My husband and I look forward to ordering anniversary cakes from Lynn in the near future!

I was really looking forward to my visit to this place. I did my research and called ahead for reservations. I trusted my fellow Unilocalers, and was disappointed. I wanted to take my best friend for her birthday. I called on a Monday and barely got reservations for that Saturday(according to the guy on the phone they were fully booked but had one cancellation) so I took it. I called the day before to request the special holiday tea and left a message, I called again in the morning to request the holiday tea and the man said he would see if he could arrange it. We arrived right on time, and were seated quickly. The waitress didn’t know that I had made reservations for afternoon tea, the man came to the table to inform me that we couldn’t get he holiday tea so I went ahead and ordered the Persian tea. The tea wasn’t even hot, the food wasn’t good. The sandwiches were super tiny and plain and the bread was dry. The cucumbers were dry, as if they were cut way in advance and there was hardly any spread on the sandwiches. The scones were very hard and dry. I spent $ 26 pp plus a $ 10 tip and was super dissatisfied with the quality of the food. If a place is going to call itself the French Bakery, I expect some delicious food and pastries. I am giving it two stars because the service was okay. I definitely won’t go way out of my way again to pay waaaay too much money for mediocre food.

Cute cute cute! I came here with some girlfriends for tea on Sunday. This place is an old house that has been converted to a bakery and restaurant. We didn’t order anything extra and I can’t comment on the quality of the food that wasn’t part of our tea service. Why am I giving this place a 5? Because I had fun and enjoyed the whole experience. If I was only rating the food it would get a 3 because the food was nothing special. The waitress was great, she kept checking on us and we never felt smothered or ignored. The ambiance is great with the old house decorated just so. The multicolored plates and tea pots complimented everything well. Everyone in the group had the demi tea which is a pot of tea(large, no one finished theirs), tea sandwiches, and dessert. First they brought out the tea. Everyone had a brightly colored pot that was put on a warming stand with a candle. Next the food was brought out on a large tray with layered plates. The bottom layers had the sandwiches, a scone, and the top had the dessert. The tea sandwiches were nothing special, they had a usual assortment: cucumber, ham, egg, etc. The scone was good and hot with jam, lemon curd, or what tasted like whipped cream to eat with your scone. There were two desserts, one coffee cake and another a lemon tart. The coffee cake was so so but the lemon tart was delicious.

Went here for their tea service! Got the Demi Tea $ 22 and I have to agree with other reviewers, wish the sandwiches were a bit bigger for that price. But I guess you pay for the environment, which I loved. And one set is more than enough to fill you(the scone was the most filling). Tea services are hard to come by if you’re not in the city to begin with, so I was very happy to find a more than decent one in the neighborhood. Disclaimer(I’ve been watching a lot of Downton Abbey and have been craving British tea service for a while now). Summary: Cute cottage/house setting/romantic and verrry quaint Great for brunch/afternoon tea Prepare to pay at least 20/person for afternoon tea Scone was very filling and delicious Will be back for brunch!

I’m sad to write this review, but it must be done. I was so excited to hear that The French Bakery was going to begin a gluten free tea service(complete with scones, desserts and open-faced sandwiches) by reservation and advance request. I made a reservation for a special holiday tea service and was sure to note my excitement about the gluten free offerings when I made my reservation. In fact, I thought that I made it clear in my reservation that one person in my party would require a gluten free tea service. When I got to the tea room our server had my table set with our special holiday tea menus and when she came to take our tea ordered I mentioned that I would be having the gluten free tea. It’s good that I mentioned it because when she came back to the table a few minutes later she informed me that my reservation did not designate a gluten free tea service. I was then told that the owner would still be able to make the open-faced sandwiches but not the scone. Really? You’re kidding me? The server went to the reservation book and looked at the staff members handwriting to see if she could decipher what happened to the reservation. I was told that the staff member was not working that day. I’m not sure what this was going to accomplish… Since the scone wasn’t available, the owner asked if I was interested in subbing a garden salad or the soup of the day in its place. I agreed to have the soup. The soup came first and it was good. Then came the rest of the gluten free tea service. I’m not sure if the owner is well-versed in gluten cross contamination, but my open-faced tea sandwiches were served on the same paper as the regular sandwiches. I don’t have a severe reactions to gluten, but if I were a true Celiac or with someone who was, I would have sent the tray back into the kitchen. I’m not sure if there is a separate area in the kitchen to make gluten free food. Since I don’t have severe reactions, I generally don’t ask about kitchen/food handling/gluten free food safety practices. My advice is would be to inquire when you make a reservation. With that said, the open-faced«sandwiches» were pitiful. The bread was literally 1/8″ thick and while the flavor was fine it was a joke to receive four tiny«sandwiches»(about 1″ wide by 2.5″ long — see pics). I had so little food that I had to stop eating while I waited for my gluten-eating dining partner to catch up. I was starving when we left and I paid $ 26 + tax and had to convince my dining partner(who decided to steal the bill away from me) that gratuity should be included(the server that we had that day didn’t do anything wrong). I don’t think that anything can make up for this. I am so disappointed. Disappointed that they got my reservation wrong when I was very clear in my request at the time of booking(note to other Unilocalers: call to confirm a few days before if you try it out). Disappointed that even though the owner was there and even though I was airing my disappointment and frustration to our server, that the owner didn’t come out of the kitchen to apologize, see how it was or attempt to make things right. I know that if I were trying out a new gluten free tea service and that if one of my customers reservations for this service was messed up, that I would have come out of the kitchen to see how things were going. If I were offering this type of service I would want feedback and I would want it to succeed. Disappointed that the 1/8″ thick«sandwich bread» did not come closed-faced(why another piece of «bread» couldn’t be added to the top is beyond me). Disappointed in the price for the value. Even more embarrassed that my dining partner footed this bill. I don’t think I’ll be going back and I really hated writing this review especially after previous experiences at this tea room and because I was so excited about what the owner was trying accomplish. I would suggest that gluten free reservations be noted in the book and highlighted(or something) to save this from happening to future gluten free customers. I would suggest that the sandwiches be served on more substantial gluten free bread. Mariposa Bakery in Oakland and Miglet’s in Danville are great local gluten free bakeries that make bread. Even Udi’s gluten free sandwich bread found in the freezer isle would made lovely tea sandwiches. I understand that making a batch of gluten free scones isn’t a walk in the park in a gluten filled kitchen or that making an entire batch for one customer without notice is economical, but I was reallllllllyyyy looking forward to a gluten free scone from a tea room(tell me, where do you see that!?). With that said, dessert was tasty. I also wouldn’t recommend going on a weekend day if you can avoid it. We were seated on the opposite wall of a party for group of young girls. Wayyyy too noisy to enjoy afternoon tea with someone. Ps. I still paid $ 26 and i didn’t get ANY savories like my dining partner.

This place is so quaint and cute and best of all, right in my neighborhood! I came here last Sunday with two girlfriends for a nice afternoon«tea party.» Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. She had great suggestions on which types of teas we should try — asking us what flavors we like and what we don’t like. I tried the peach black tea — which had a subtle peach flavor. My friends tried the jasmin green tea and mango red tea(both were equally delicious). I ordered the Demi tea set($ 20 per person), which comes with 4 flavors of mini«finger» sandwiches, 2 petite sweets(sampler portions of the desserts), homemade scones with(buttery crème, lemon crème, and strawberry preserve), and your own pot of the tea of your choice. The sandwiches we tried were: Egg salad with pimetto, taragon chicken salad, boursin cheese and ham, and cucumber mint. Although the sandwiches did not fill me up(I don’t think they’re meant to make you full), they were really tastey. The desserts offered that day were tiramisu and the opera(coffee cream and chocolate ganache and some other yummy goodness that unfortunately i can’t remember). One last tid bit of information: The bakery looks just like a house(it probably was one, that was converted into a bakery). There’s indoor and outdoor seating. I loved all the decorations and pink walls, but I thought the tables were a bit too close to each other — makes for distracting conversations since I can clearly hear all the gossip the ladies at the adjacent table were talking about. Nevertheless, I would definitely be back to check this place out again the next time my girlfriends and I need a little R&R.
