I was disappointed with tonight’s meal. I selected the vegetarians plate. The last time I ordered this two weeks ago it was delicious. I selected the greens because they were so tasty before. However to Ishtar the cook totally missed the mark. The collards were supposed to mixed with cabbage. NOT. They were mushy and tasteless. I got a double order as one of my sides. No way I am going to stomach the rest of this mixture. The string beans not what I expected from soul food restaurant. However better than the greens. The fried wings were OK. Last time I ordered them tasted like my momma had fried them. Three wings six dollars. I will not be back. Also the sock it to be cake was as dry as my front lawn. Highly disappointed. I ordered it two weeks ago. The reason I returned was for the vegetables and the chicken. I am hoping you are not using can vegetables. The black eyed peas I ordered were not fresh. Sorry. I love southern cooking however it seems hit or miss here. I truly know tonight’s cook was not the same person that prepared my food two weeks ago. Sadly I will not give you another chance. It’s too pricey and the food is not up to par.

My #1 Breakfast spot! I love this place and go there a few times a week, matter of fact headed there now. Love the staff and have a good relationship with them all. They all know my name and greet me like family when I come thru. Food is excellent and the dessert is as well. If you want authentic soul food in the Long Beach area this is the spot!

Ok, how do I start? I am in love with the turkey meatloaf! They know how to make the best fried chicken, been twice now and it’s my new favorite lunch spot go to. Our server was beyond sweet and it was an all around wonderful time. Don’t forget to try the black eyed peas, candied yams and macaroni and cheese

I have eaten at M’dears quite a few times. The food is very good, but they took my favorite meal off the menu the liver and onions. All the waitresses are nice and attentive. Kelly always handles my order with perfection. All their sides are cooked very well. The portions on the to go orders could be larger.

This is my first time eating here at M’Dears since its changed from M&Ms. The food was excellent thanks to Chef Dre and his team. I was first a little sceptical about getting the gumbo because I haven’t been to too many places that actually sold good Gumbo but againts my better judgement I tried it anyway and u have to say it was Great. Filled with flavor. Not too spicy and not too salty. I loved their cornbread, which if you are use too southern style cooking, taste more lot Hot Water Cornbread. My mother in law had their turkey meatloaf and gravy, greens, and yams. And my son ate their waffles which was nice and soft. And to top it off. I couldn’t get enough of their lemonade. Definitely took me back to my grandmommy’s cooking. Needless to say I would definitely go back again. Good job team and a special thank you to Chef Dre.

I think my 1 star rating speaks for itself. My party was very disappointed in the can sides offered and the overly priced desserts. Décor: extremely POOR, holes in wall, very dusty place and the customer service needs improvement.

Ok so anyone that knows me knows I love supporting businesses that are new or have an ethnic basewell let me tell you… not disappointing visit. One waitress I think her name was Dionne… had 10 – 12 tables the whole time I was there turning the tables busing the tables, all with ease… not saying there were 10 – 12 customers I have to tell you she must have gotten in and out about 25 customers during the time. And no one felt lack of service… She handled her S@&t! Smiling the whole time engaging with whom she could… Well the food was good too. Hot and prepared well with great plating… I will definitely be back and highly recommend although it was a little difficult to find hidden in a strip mall next to a bowling alley

Staff was very nice and helpful. My husband has a very limited diet and they were great. Ordered turkey meatloaf. It was delicious and the mashed potatoes were awesome. Highly recommend!

Gonna try again, I got the Oxtails, was way too salty for my taste, I actually could not eat them, My Family liked the food, My Nephew, got the Fried Pork chops Dinner, he loved it, My sister got the Caesar Salad, she thought it was fantastic, and it also looked good, My niece got the«Gumbo» she was satisfied as well, I think its what you choose, Bunch of hard workers, there, like most business, they won’t hire enough help, so you really can’t blame them for the slowness of getting your food, at my Job its the same way, not enough help, and Business owners always want too save money,. On there major«Soul Food» dishes they need too do a taste test, I think. But gonna try again, Its close too where I live, and would like too have a nice place too go too… oh another thing, they need too overhaul the Mac n Cheese, not good at all, and the greens and cabbage, it lack that, spicy, hammock flavor, it was totally bland, tasted like water, I don’t know, us Black folks, have that taste that we are looking for, and perhaps it isn’t the healthiest, but every now and then, its ok to have… But I am not gonna rule then out, just yet…

This place was such a nice surprising find! Got the bacon club sandwich and potato salad for under $ 10 and they do not kid around! They gave me so much food and it was all delicious. So much bacon, they did not skimp on that and the potato salad was really good. Will come again to try their breakfast(which goes until 1pm) cuz their waffles smelled really good :)

Little disappointed. Was hoping for southern soul breakfast and just got mediocre. I ordered the m’ dear special with the sweet potato pancake. Big let down. If it wasn’t for the nutmeg and 2 bite size pieces of sweet potato I would have never known it wasn’t a regular pancake. Tasted like someone just whipped up breakfast from all the supplies they bought at stater bros. my friends grits were bland and not at all authentic tasting. I won’t be back.

The 2-star rating is not for the food. It’s for the sloooow service, the non-refills of water and for running out of various foods. I have been here twice and have experienced those very things each time. The food is delicious, the chocolate cake is moist and chocolatey, and I love the name and concept of this place! It’s just a shame to serve food so slowly AND to not have what I want to order. My friend had pork chops one day, went back the very next day and was told they’re out of pork chops. I wanted to try sweet potatoes, and I was told they are out. They were out of the candied yams, too.(both listed separately on the menu.) I want to love this place! Please pick up the service!

So my in-laws told me about this great soul food restaurant in my area. Admittedly I’m especially skeptical of soul food because not all those who claim to be good cooks are, particularly when it comes to soul-food;just because you fry a piece of chicken does not make you a good soul cook! Enough about that… This place had a pretty laid back vibe. Self seating, and friendly staff. The oxtails & greens/cabbage mixture, I would definitely order again, but the macaroni/cheese over-cooked, rice/gravy, decent enough… The CARROTCAKE A MUSTHAVE! My husband had the steak/gravy w/yams and dressing, he liked it enough for a return visit. If decent food, and friendly staff is what your looking for this is a jewel tucked away inside a bowling alley with a down home feel…

Wow $ 14 for lunch and additional charge since didn’t have cash. Not expecting my lunch was going to cost that much. This place was out of my way. Average food, parking lot is FULL& restaurant is empty(2 tables in use total 5 people. Try to give small businesses support but in return my support is not at a great cost. My service is weak.

The Mac and cheese, greens and cabbage mix, and the corn bread is really good. I had a taste of the carrot cake, red velvet and chocolate all was delicious. The only thing that the red velvet cake was missing was the good olé cream cheese icing.

So we came in for breakfast and it was packed. Service is kind of slow. More help came in but they need set tables to cover because three different people asked us same things and got things either mixed up or forgot entirely about something, confusing. I ordered salmon, grits eggs, coffee and he ordered chicken sausage, grits, eggs and orange juice. My salmon was overcooked but everything else was okay.

Deep sigh… I hate to do this, but I have to be honest. This is my worst experience at one of my favorite places to eat. Because I don’t know where to begin, I will just outline my issues with the service today. 1. The table had syrup all over it… I asked twice for it to be cleaned. 2. This is the second time I. Two weeks I couldn’t order chicken and waffles because they were out of waffle mix. 3. My scrambled eggs were so cold, the cheese I requested on top didn’t melt. 4. My toast didn’t come until I asked for it, well after I was into my meal. 5. I had to ask for coffee refills. Now, I am a frequent customer of this restaurant and I even drive from Long Beach to LA to the original restaurant. With that said… I am so disappointed today.

I’m not a fan of the shopping plaza M’Dear’s is located in but inside, it’s a cute, little restaurant. I had the sweet potato waffle with chicken wings here. As soon as I took a bite, I said, «This is much better than Roscoe’s!» My friend scowled at me because he worships Roscoe’s but I think he knew I was right. The sweet potato waffle had a good chewy texture with a slight crispiness. The sweet potato made this waffle ever so scrumptious. The chicken wings were lightly battered, tender and juicy. This dish itself helped my morning start off right. I do have to admit, the customer service can be a bit slow here. This is not the place to go if you want to get in and get out. If that’s your agenda, you are going to find yourself frustrated trying to speed up the service. I also had to wave down the waitress twice to get refills on my coffee. She was sweet whenever she did stop by the table though. Nonetheless, I left M’Dear’s happy and full. I really wanted to try their dessert but I was just too full too. I would want to come back for the sweet potato waffle and chicken wings!
