The Writer’s Block

You know when you walk into a place and there’s an immediate, visceral reaction that would make you do nearly anything to have that place exist forever and ever?
The Writers Block is such a place and despite not planning on buying a book I bought one anyway as a sort of pledge to to the continued existence of this place — I hope to all that is good and decent in this world — forever and ever and ever.
And Scott, one of the owners, was exactly how you’d imagine the curator of such a treasure trove of books: kind, thoughtful and radiating bookly wisdom. I asked him about Murakami and he spoke briefly about his love for the author then helped me find a book I’m sure I’ll enjoy immensely. To have that kind of attention from someone obviously greatly adorous of books in a small temple dedicated to the written word… Well, I’m not ashamed to say it almost brought tears to my eyes.
Come here, buy something, find out why you’ll never shop for books anywhere else. I promise you’ll thank me or whoever or whatever brings you here.

We were given a tip to check this place out and we’re super glad we made the walk. This was one our best experiences of our trip. This place is super charming. I can’t even explain how cool it was inside. There were more than just books and everywhere you looked was a new surprise. Go here!

I took my class of 2^nd graders on a field trip here today, and it was awesome! They led the students through the story writing process in such a fun, engaging way. Each student got an actual bound book of the story they created, complete with author photo on the back, to take home with them. The workshop was amazing, and they did it free of charge. I’ll definitely be bringing classes back here in the future.

I was a featured author there. The put my book on the hshelf for a month and did a book signing with four other authors and myself in the back room. I’m a Vegas native who currently lives in DC. When I heard about about The Writer’s Block opening, I subscribed to their listserv (even though I’m on the other side of the country), hoping that I would be able to stop by on my next visit home — it was so cool to learn that an independent bookstore was opening up in Vegas — not a common sight in Sin City. After more than a year, I FINALLY made it over to check it out today. Nice store, great selection of books, and the room in the back, where I guess they host readings and workshops is really spacious. I hope more Vegans stop by to support the store — it is a rare gem that I hope leads to other spaces for literary engagement in this city.

Recommended by my sister, responsive, giving and a couple who care about the next generation. Well worth a stop. And worth your patronage.

If there was a way to give more stars I would! Love this quaint little book shop. The owner and all the store help are so nice. Baron be bunny is a favorite with my kids and they look forward to coming here and petting him. My daughter was lucky enough to be able to do the magical newspaper writing class –FOR FREE! She is 6 and it was such a great outlet for her creativity not only writing but also drawing. The finished product is a masterpiece to be cherished

I might have children just so I can read them the books they sell at this amazing little bookstore. Bought my niece a xylophone here and she’s gonna slay so hard. Very cute décor and the couple that owns it are the best most sweet people from New York.

A fun little book store with a pleasant staff.

This is a wonderful book store but also so much more. They sponsor creative writing workshops for public school children in k-​12 as a free service to the community. The participants leave with a published and bound copy of their work. They have meeting space available for gatherings. They have a wonderful selection of child and adult gift items, art supplies and the opportunity to adopt a bird! There is even a live shop rabbit, no kidding, in an alcove by the register. Make time to stop in and support this shop, you will be glad you did.

I wish The Writer’s Block had been around during the Vegas trips of my teenage and college years. Downtown has changed in such a nice way, and an indie bookstore is a fantastic development.
It’s small, but crammed full of new and interesting books. I caught eye of many of the latest in literary fiction, cool art books, and just all sorts of excellent selections. For the nerds out there, they even had a copy of Hyrule Historia for sale! And I may have felt a little swell of pride to see that several of the items on display I’ve purchased for MPOW back in Oklahoma – whoever purchases for The Writer’s Block clearly has the same taste! ;)
Be sure to peruse all the sections – there’s something for everyone here. I found the store to be well-​organized and easy to navigate, something that I find frustrating about the big box bookstores. The clerks were also friendly and helpful without being too overbearing /​breathing down your neck.
I know I’m gonna come back in future trips to come. Heck, I’m even thinking of coming back before I jet back to OK next week!

First purchase of many. Scott even helped with the gift wrapping. Have you checked out this gem? It’s the only independently owned NEW bookstore in Las Vegas. Scott and Drew are the owners. Their passion for what they do and how they do it is infectious. Their book collection is very carefully curated in such a way where you can find something for everyone on your gift list. Scott personally assisted me in finding books that fit the personality of the friend I was purchasing for. The unique design of the store is so immersive and everything is merchandised so well that books you’ve never heard of but will want to just pop out at you as you navigate through each section. I am so overjoyed to have a small business like this within easy walking distance of my house. Parking (yes, I drove — it’s cold!) was also super easy on 10^th Street.

I love this store! It’s the first «local» bookstore I’ve see in this city and I think the only one? They had a lot of cool art books that aren’t necessarily «rare», but not what you would typically see elsewhere. They had a lot of cool knickknacks, fine notebooks (from $ 2 – 20) and were made with cool papers and designs and small enough to carry in my purse without taking a lot of room. They had really cool pens also. Love the layout, reminded me of Portland, OR. I think anyone who’s into literature, writing, crafting, DIY, etc. will love this store and definitely must check out.
P. S. They have a bunny in a cage in one of the rooms and I felt really bad for it :(:([because it can’t hop around]

I love the many masks, I did adopt one of their birds. This a great place to buy gifts for loved ones. The resident bunny caught me off guard which was totally rad.

AS IF THAT WASN’T ENOUGH… they are also super kid-​friendly (great selection of children’s books, a live rabbit you can pet, toys to play with, welcoming staff).
PLUS they host all sorts of workshops and book clubs FOR FREEEEEEEE! I only glanced quickly at the flyers, but they have various writing workshops, puppetry, book clubs, etc, for adults, high schoolers, and kids (down to 5 years old). After the workshops, they even publish little mini-​books of high school poetry or kids sci-​fi or whatever.
I love reading, but I’m typically slave to the Kindle/​Amazon. No longer! I will gladly trek downtown to peruse their hand-​selected inventory and pick out a new read. What a great place to promote literature in the community. Thank you Writers Block!

So much more beneath the surface, you’ll see what I mean… It’s unlike any bookstore I’ve ever been to! Designed to the 9’s every surface and square inch is beautifully rendered. A true reflection of the owners who are both incredibly passionate to their mission of creating a new element to the community through an array of carefully selected books and free programs to the public which takes place in their back multipurpose room. I wanted to buy everything in the store. We were rushed to go in and out so quick because someone in our group was tired and grumpy lol. We’ll be back for more next time we’re in Vegas.
It’s safe, there’s plenty of places to park nearby, tons of books to read and lots of cool people there to show you around. I am totally digging the energy at The Writer’s Block and no doubt they will be hugely successful because of their true love for people and books.
Tips: Look for the neon sign at the front and a letter press in the window! Also check out the Container Park which is three blocks away on 7^th and Fremont. There’s a podcast, The Downtown Podcast, that takes place right across the street. Lots of cute restaurants and bars surrounding for miles on end either way on Fremont. Have fun!

The Writer’s Block is a charming store that makes you want to buy books. There are toys and trinkets scattered throughout, as well as (fake) birds you can adopt (which is just the coolest idea, to me). I overheard an employee tell another customer that they are able to order special-​request books, so if you want something very particular (or just something they don’t have), they seem very willing to get it for you.
The shop itself is both organized and laid out beautifully, which makes you feel at home. It would be very easy to lose a couple hours inside just wandering and looking at everything they have. Plus — there’s a REAL bunny! He doesn’t hop around the store (as far as I’ve seen), but he’s very cool to admire before you check out.
My goal is to visit The Writer’s Block next time I’m in need of a new book to help keep this shop thriving in town. I hope you’ll check it out, too!

An absolutely adorable bookstore. It had a nice smell from the uniquely crafted particle board bookshelves. I really liked the layout and they even showed us the back area where they plan on having workshops and author signings.
The bunny is a sweet little personal touch to the store. It goes nicely with the fact that the person that works there (forgive me for not knowing his name) was extremely sweet and helpful.

Las Vegas has tons of restaurants, bars, casinos, and even an unusually high number of grocery stores– what we need more of is book stores! Happy to hear that The Writer’s Block has opened in the Fremont area– in addition to tons of books, they also have interesting and educational décor and knick-​knacks like anatomical animal models.
Books are divided up by new releases, fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books with separate sections for health/​diet, poetry, and lifestyle. Though the store itself is on the small side, it is packed with books and there is good selection. Staff is friendly, greeting customers as they enter and offering to help find specific items if needed.

I love bookstores. Scratch that: I LOVE bookstores. I would probably wither away and expire if the places didn’t exist. So I was understandably pretty excited when I caught wind of a new bookstore Downtown.
It’s small and hidden a little farther down Fremont where they are still building in new things for the area, but I walked in and was instantly impressed. A lot of interesting niche titles that you don’t always see, but the choices were solid, and I really liked how well everything was laid out in the store. They also have a unique selection of toys and other little collectible items that really caught my attention.
I could have easily browsed around the books a little more, but I didn’t have too much time. The staff seemed friendly and helpful. I do wish they had a little coffee in the store, and books and coffee just fit well together like… books and coffee.
They are still in their «soft opening» phase, but I could easily see myself killing time down there, perusing books. Honestly, I’m thrilled to see such a thing hit Downtown. It seems to bode well for the expansion of the area.
I will most definitely return. If they continue on the path they seem to be heading on, this may be a new hangout for me.
