Gateways Inn & Restaurant

This is an iconic Bed and Breakfast set in one of the most beautiful villages in all of New England. 5 minutes to Tangelwood and Norman Rockwell Museum. Michele and Eiram are attentive hosts and will bend over backwards to make your stay more pleasurable ! A cozy bar and lounge with entertainment on the weekends! The restaurant is where the place really shines. A simple savory breakfast (included) is served from 8:30 til 10 but dinner is an dining experience with a top notch wine list! Better go enjoy this one soon because places like this are disappearing fast and when they are gone «that’s it»!!

Gateways definitely has the look. A beautiful B&B, great lounge to hang while listening to music and grab a bite, but their restaurant really lacks consistency and a service level that reflects the rest of the place. On our last visit we had the prix fixe (a good deal) and a la carte choices.
The food was mixed. The sides and apps were much better than the main courses. The veal dish had a great tang of meyers lemon, but it was slightly overcooked; however, the creamy leek side was terrific. The sweatbreads were more minerally and less creamy than the best restaurants serve; however, the cold pea soup had intense pea flavor.
Even though the restaurant wasn’t that crowded on a Friday night they were out of a number of items on the menu, and the service was equal to a poorly run diner. No asking if we wanted refills of drinks, nor bread, nor asking if everything is OK, plus the food was very slow in coming to the table. The staff was very friendly, so maybe it is lack of training.
There are a lot of really good restaurants within walking distance. I would chose one of those.

The Inn itself is very lovely and you are warmly greeted by the proprietors who are helpful and friendly. it was a little less than what many Select Registry B&B’s offer – no pantry
with coffee, tea, water, soda, snacks, etc., no afternoon tea and the lighting was a bit
dim and hard to read by. chairs not particularly comfortable but the bed was… Breakfast
was strange, lots of little pieces of cheese & jams (no bacon & eggs!) but the help was very
lovely and friendly, this is not a cheap date, but a good location!

We had a great time at the Gateway Inn. The food was exquisit and great ambiance. I have to point out the hospitality of the place. The innkeeper introduced himself made sure that we are enjoying ourselves.

My husband and I had dinner there on August 10^th for my birthday. We had a 7:30 reservation — which we realized was not necessary since there were only 5 tables filled. We were greeted in the lobby by a very nice girl — maybe 14 or 15 years old. After she showed us to our table we didn’t see anyone for quite a bit. Finally our waitress — and apparently the only waitress (and possibly bartender also) came to take our drink order. We ordered a bottle of wine and were told it might take a few minutes because they have to get it from the basement. She told us several items that were no longer available on the menu and then disappeared. It was this way for the entire LONG meal. We tasted the wine and it had gone bad and she very nicely took it away but it was then another long wait for her to return with drinks. Dinner was the same way. When we finally got our meal I would rate the food as a C. The $ 34 steak was over cooked and about a quarter inch thick. Also, although the china was very nice there was no polish or finesse to plating. Unfortunately the whole meal became at $ 140 joke.

Waitress friendly and effective but trying to be bartender, waitress and coat check. Meal was just okay but hugely overpriced. Salad with sliced steak turned out to be no more than a garnish of salad for $ 15 and a whole strip steak for $ 7. Average burger was $ 22.
Would not return.

We live in Lenox and much appreciate this place for its cozy piano bar, great entertainment, and late-​night dining. Ownership is new this year and oh, the changes. All for the good. Food (we’ve have only eaten in the piano bar, which has its own bar menu in addition to the regular menu) is good and includes interesting nosh plates that combine various items. The piano bar is in a lounge-​type room that opens into the actual bar area that features a gorgeous old wooden bar. No beer on tap, but a huge collection of scotch makes this a fun place for the scotch-​lover.

New ownership this year. They now have a late-​night dining option, with entertainment, in the Piano Bar. Lenox generally shuts down early, and has always lacked a good place to go après-​Tanglewood or theater, and now we have it.
It’s lounge seating, soft chairs and sofas, and tiny tables. The food offerings are themed packages like the New York — corn beef and pastrami, the Athens — various Greek things, sized for sharing, plus various sandwiches. Soup in a bread bowl was unusually constructed, not the usual approach with too much bread vs. soup. We’ve been there twice now, with four people, and had 8 great experiences. Lots of options for vegetarians. The menu is on their Web site.
Entertainment is a singer or small jazz combo, and tends toward old-​time supper club vibe. Very pleasant.
The old owner left behind his insane collection of 100 different scotches, and it’s fun to peruse the menu and then choose one at random. I’ve had a Glen-​something and a Mac-​something, both delicious.
Note: we didn’t try the main dining room or stay overnight, so my rating doesn’t apply to those features. Older ratings should be viewed with care, as the ownership and management are all new this year.

My fiancée & I spent a night here and it was wonderful. The proprietors are wonderful and friendly. The ambiance was great and the room was nice. I loved the gas fireplace and it helped make the room warm really quickly.
We had both dinner and breakfast and the food was awesome. The steak I had for dinner easily ranks in my top 3 steaks of all time.
It is a bit pricey, but when you want to spent a night away somewhere, it is a great place to do so.

We had dinner there last night and it was pretty good. Nothing outstanding. My wife ordered the lobster ravioli which was good but had a very strong (maybe even overpowering) lobster flavor. I got the bolognese meat sause which was good but not spectacular. It seemed a little pricy for the quality.

My friend and I came in on a Saturday evening prior to wedding activities. Our original plans for accommodations had not worked out, leaving us to search for something rather last minute. We were tired and hungry following a 2+ hour commute from NY. Having both recently completed graduate school, budget was in the back of our minds.
Gateways had their vacancy sign up and looked fairly homey and inviting. «Let’s stop and check their rates,» I suggest. He stopped the car and I ran in. Fabrizio Chiariello was behind the bar and told me they did indeed have several vacancies. The rate was not as good as we had hoped, but could be done. «Thank you,» I said. «Let me check with my friend and come back.»
I consulted with Steve-​o, who had a [possibly cheaper] place in mind further south. Back in the automobile, we drove a bit past Lee, seeking it out to no avail. «Let’s do the Gateways,» I said, «but please let’s have dinner first before I pass out.»
We stopped for a small meal and went back. Fabrizio Chiariello was still behind the bar. «Would it still be possible to rent a room?» I asked.
No.
Although the rooms were still available and the doors still open, he told me my window had passed. He said it was a matter of principle. When I told him we had needed to find dinner, he told me we should have eaten at his restaurant.
Exhausted, we gave up and just went to meet the wedding friends for drinks. We ended up sharing a room with some other friends who had an extra bed. In the end, I am glad we didn’t end up paying the higher prices for rooms and meals at such an unfriendly and stuffy place.

My wife and I have stayed at Gateways Inn twice. Once 6 years ago and the second within the past month or so. Both stays were delightful. The hotel is, despite some of the comments listed below, in excellent shape and the proprietors take great care of it. The meals, whether it’s a delectable dinner or a warm breakfast, are extremely well made. The rooms are tastefully decorated with antiques, classy furnishings, and sufficient modern devices and accessories for the busy traveler.
My one complaint this past time was that the heat in our room was completely messed up. We actually had if anything lowered the heat and the room when we came back later in the evening was a boiler. Furthermore, the heater grills both in the room and outside the room were clanking madly throughout the evening, which made it hard to sleep. We turned off the heat, opened the windows, and not much seemed to make a difference. I normally would deduct «stars» or points for this but to be fair they were having heat problems and work was being done when we arrived.
The true pleasure of this establishment (for me) is that the proprietor has collected one the largest and centrally most impressive liquor collections — specifically Single Malt Scotch — in the US. The inn has over 200 bottles of some of the finest and rarest Scotches around, and the proprietor is more than happy to show it off. Still, he has a right to be proud and he has invested significant money and time collecting the many bottles that are prominently displayed in the bar. I should point out that they also host Scotch pairing dinners — I have yet to take part but they look marvelously intriguing.
Anyway, whether you’re looking for dinner, a place to stay, or a drink — I highly recommend the Gateways Inn.

This is a hard one to call. The house once belonged to Proctor, of Proctor & Gamble company. It has been remodeled by the owners in an elegant and aristocratic way, especially the main rooms and the bar, which has a vast collection of single malt scotch whiskeys. Yet it lacks a touch of home, a sense of welcoming and comfort. There are no small flowers on the tables or in the rooms, no cookies baking or set out, no small knick knacks to soften the formality of the place, leaving it bordering on being cold and stiff. The owner Fabrizio was cordial and showed us around the house he is quite proud of. We had only the breakfast and the strawberries were wonderful, the eggs benedict not so much but with a very good asparagus accompaniment. The bedroom was good sized, had the requisite television, end tables, bed and closet, but again lacked a welcoming touch. AC was quiet and effective.
I think this B&B would be best suited for a group of men gathering on an office retreat rather than for a couple looking for something more romantic. For the price ($ 360 with tax) it didn’t deliver as I had anticipated.
