History

Established in 1957.

The Vine Cinema first opened on December 26, 1956. A small Jack Lemmon and Jane Austin film called «You Can’t Run Away From It» was the first motion picture shown that day. Originally a one screen theatre with a tiny lobby, the Vine Cinema was a modern marvel for the time.

Fast forward to August of 2009 when Vine Cinema decided to make a change to Independent films. These smaller films often shown in theatres in Berkeley and San Francisco were not being shown in the Tri-Valley, and were a way to get out of the shadow of the close competition just down the street.

Just a month later in September of 2009, the Vine got it’s beer and wine license, and the «Alehouse» was then added to the name to show that beer, wine and food was now available at our movie theatre.

Recently in December of 2012, the Vine Cinema played its last 35 mm film… and went DIGITAL! Now, 100% of our films are presented in crystal clear digital format, insuring a bright future for the Vine Cinema & Alehouse!
