Living in SLC, I used to shed a solitary tear and pour one out for my fallen homies when one by one every Blockbuster and Hollywood bit the dust. Shoot me, but I still enjoy renting movies, and prefer going to a place like Hastings with 1000x the selection of a Red Box. Throw in a bevy of books, music, graphic novels, knick knacks, quirky impulse buys and a tall Chai Tea and I’m a happy camper. I wish there were a Hastings in every town. But I cant helping thinking it will be converted straight over to a museum decades from now…“See kids, we used to watch movies and listen to music on shiny discs read by lasers.“ Cherish it.

Hastings is the place to go if you need to waste money on knickknacks or just needing to kill some time in Logan. There is a ton of awesome stuff in here and it’s one of the few places, I’m assuming in the US, where you’re able to go and actually rent a movie and then take it back. Novel concept especially when the world is consumed by kiosks and only new movies in them, it’s really refreshing to be able to find older titles you don’t really want to buy. There is so many random pieces of just stuff here that it would be hard to leave here without buying at least one thing. You have comics, books, CD’s, records, a café, blu-rays, DVD’s even VHS. I will always come when I have to waste an hour or two and twenty bucks to waste. The one thing that isn’t here is customer service. If you need something, you will have to hunt someone down that is most likely on their phone, and that’s just fine. Once you do have someone there to help you, they absolutely will. I sure wish there was one in Salt Lake.

There is a lot going on here. You’ve got movies, phone cases, Harry Potter paraphernalia, a little café in the corner, places to sit… a go cart track, a pool in which you can save baby dolphins, a spaceship you can drive to the moon. Okay, maybe I exaggerated a little on those last few – but point being, you can basically find anything you want if you look hard enough. Except milk, I had to run across the street for that one. This is the only place in Logan I have found to rent movies. You better bring friends to help you search, however, because I basically have to drag the employees around to help me. Seriously, they’re not too stellar at customer service. You do need to get a rental card, so if it’s your first time borrowing a movie, be sure to set aside about 5 extra minutes at the checkout counter to jot down all the information needed. I left with a movie in one hand and sour gummy bears in the other(like I said, they have the most random stuff) and fled to my car. It’s fun to be in there for about 7 seconds. Get in, grab your movie, and get out. TIPS&TRICKS: * If you return your rented movie before«11»(the cashier didn’t tell me AM or PM) you’ll get some money back. So, experiment. Either hand it in BEFORE you go to work the next day or AFTER – then let me know which one saved you money. * If you have time and want to take a stroll around the rest of the store, here’s a challenge for you: Purchase the weirdest thing you can find that’s under $ 2.00. Take a photo with you holding the object high above your head, like a Lion King pose.

The only place in Logan where you can rent movies older than 2 years if you’re interested in some classics. The prices aren’t the best but the options are pretty wide.

The Good: As good as it gets in Logan, movies to rent, new and used books The Bad: Coffee shop is not my favorite The Ugly: I could spend many many hours literally doing nothing here I came here because of the buy 1 coffee drink, get one free. I am a sucker for a deal and it was a hot day and I needed something cool and sort of a pick me up. I walked in through the café door and was instantly in love with everything I saw. Movies, Music, Books, Coffee, ample places to sit, happy employees, and it seemed to be pretty organized and non messy. First things first though– before I could browse and shop to my hearts content I had to get my deal. I will admit I am a bit picky about my coffee. But only if it is iced. Since Iced is what I wanted I of course had to ask my questions. I didn’t see plain iced coffee on the menu so I asked. I double checked that what they served as Iced coffee was not in fact an Americano but indeed coffee. They said yes. I said a 16 ounce please(this is the smallest size in iced there) Problem ahead: they did not have enough iced coffee. They said they could add hot brewed coffee and fill with ice. No… not okay. That completely ruins Iced Coffee because that brewed coffee is brewed a certain strength to be drank straight– no ice involved. Iced coffee is brewed to handle extra ice. Dilemma: I was not going to get anything at this point but I really wanted some yummy coldness. I ordered an iced americano. The baristas probably thought I was cray but sometimes that is just a side effect of ordering coffee for me.(sadly it wasn’t even that good but life goes on. Okay coffee problem over. The store itself is pretty freaking awesome. Used books mingling with New books. Comfy chairs to sit on and seating provided throughout the store. .49 cents rentable movies. I mean who even rents movies anymore? This made me happy to see something that is slowly becoming extinct alive and well in a store. Not a redbox. One thing that was lacking is the magazine section-not much to choose from. and the kids sections was seriously small. Doesn’t everyone have kids in Logan? Where is the stage or kids reading area? I would have liked to see a but more options for the kid area. All in all I liked this place. I like it more though when I thought it was only a local store and not part of a small corp.

This place is kind of a serve yourself atmosphere. In that you will never have a staff member come up and ask you if they can help you find something. The only staff members you pass don’t even bother to greet you. They will only help if asked by you. This can be seen as good, and it can be seen as bad. Usually there’s not too bad of a line, and they have lots of content to choose from. The parking lot needs to be reworked, as there are potholes galore, and during the winter, with the sub-freezing temperatures and the ice that sits in this parking lot, you have to be conscience about the dangers of crossing the traffic to get in and out of the building and back to your car. They don’t do a good job keeping this lot clean. Their hours are good, and selection is good, so all in all still an OK place to go.
