Hi, I’m Steven and I’m a local musician who just moved to Long Beach from Meuse Music in Huntington Beach. I’m really excited to give music lessons in the neighborhood! I started playing drums at age 2 and have been formally teaching since I was 11. For the past 13 years, I’ve been working with over 100 students in the OC and LA areas along with performing and producing under Universal Music Group as Steven James King. I’m offering some discounted lessons for the fall and am accepting all ages and skill levels!

I started playing the drums at age 2. At first, I was drumming with spoons on pots and pans — I could even play «Band on the Run» by Wings all the way through as a toddler. :) After moving up to a real 5-​piece Tama drum set, I started listening to a lot of classic rock and folk music so I picked up the acoustic guitar. I bought my first Taylor 314 at 12. After learning every Dave Matthews Band song I could find, I bought my first Fender Telecaster Electric Guitar. During my Junior High years, I was definitely a classic Rock guy, learning all of the classic riffs and licks — my favorite being Pink Floyd’s «Run Like Hell.» Around this time, I started writing and singing my own songs, and was lucky to study audio recording with some of the masters in LA at a young age. Before I knew it, I was recording and releasing my own albums on iTunes and playing with a lot of bands locally. My first student approached me for drum lessons at age 11, and I’ve been teaching ever since! Music = magic

Steven is a very creative and progressive teacher. He will come into your home a create lesson the perfectly cater to your child needs. He really surpassed all of my expectations of what a music class can be. After having moved all over California for my husbands job and having four other music teachers!!! Example of Steven… My son just wanted to write music immediately he knew a little for previously playing, but all the other teachers would come in and just start having him memorize songs. Stephen King came in as a recording artist himself and really know how to harness this plan my child had. With Steven he show up like a one man recording studio and really knows how to push new music technology to his advantage to help his students. My kid is so excited to have him come, he has been amazing!!! We heard from another parent about this wonder music teacher they had and call immediately… Steven was like finding a diamond in the ruff!!!

Steven does not only teach how to play instruments, but he can optionally also teach how to make electronic music using cool controllers like the monome. It is very easy to get started enjoying making music in this way and it’s great way for someone to get a composer/arranger’s view of music if someone is not interested in becoming a piano pro.
When I was a kid, I started playing different instruments but gave each of them up after about a year because music was not my main passion and I got bored of the practice that was just about perfecting my technique. I found some electronic music looping programs and had a lot of fun with them but didn’t know how to move forward. I was finally able to teach myself, but only in my 20s. I wish that someone like Steven had taught me how to make electronic music when I was younger.
At a personal level, Steven is a friendly and eloquent person and his passion for music shows in his interactions.

I have never met anyone more passionate about music. You can really see his passion when he is teaching you. You can really tell he loves his job. Rest assured you will have every music related question answered by him. If he doesn’t know the answer you will sure have it during the next lesson. He is very patient and can easily adapt to your playing/​learning style. I now have the confidence to play on stage with a band. I also feel confident that I will be able to adapt to any band or song that will I be playing with. He really taught me how to play better and utilize the guitar to it’s full potential. He is very easy to contact and communicate with. Do yourself a favor and don’t get ripped off again. Don’t take from someone who just sits there and shows off and name drops about who he has gigged with. Trust me they are not fun to be around. Take from an honest teacher who will give you no BS.

Steven is an awesome instructor! My five year old has been taking drum lessons since January 2015 and has demonstrated some amazing leaps in music theory and drumming technique. This is an incredible feat considering the frenetic high energy my son was born with… he is the classic «difficult child». Steven expertly instructs and guides my son without compromising his growing passion and natural curiosity for drumming and music as a whole.
I took saxophone lessons starting in the 6th grade for five years and although the instruction was solid and I excelled in the fundamentals I was never exposed to the greats. I mean I never knew who John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Or Sonny Rollins were until I was in my early twenties and after I hung up the sax. The connection between what I was learning and these masters never came up! What I have noticed with Steven is that he eats and breathes music. He wants and can talk about any music genre or style. He reveres the greats that have come before and appreciates the budding talent he instructs and he makes sure they connect. I wish I could have had an instructor like him.

I think there are very few that can offer the instruction that he can and have a true, genuine passion for what he does.
