Been on the Liberty before and have never had a bad trip but today CAPTAIN GARY (not the usual guy) just didn’t want to fish kept taking us on a boat ride and then decided to cut the trip short at 10:30 when we were supose to be out till 12 Midnight… the rest of the crew was great but CAPTAIN GARY didnt want to try and find the fish .hope management does something about it. If they want to keep my business…

I was planning on coming out and catching some fish but instead Captain Garry took us on a fucken boat ride. Captain Garry didn’t want to fish, cut the trip short we went in at 10:30 when we were suppose to be out till 12:00a.m. This Captain sucks ass I hope i will never see this guy on this boat again

Decent charter. Me and 4 others took their full day San Clemente Island trip on the Eldorado. Clean boat. Pretty chill crew and Capt. Food and drink was pretty good. Office staff was pretty cool too. Bunks weren’t half bad and I think it just got overhauled.
Spent about an hour landing bait and leaving the harbor. Got to San Clem around 4am sun up for a sun up cast. Which is good. No waiting around killing morning rise.
The bite wasn’t too hot, the Capt and crew did all they could. All other boats that day had bad numbers as well. Boat was pretty respectful of waters and other charters. Unlike some of the other boats out there had no problem coming up and trying to snake out casts and fish marks. Dick move in the fishing community.
My only complaint was there were a few off duty deck hands who were filling the boat. One of the guys was a complete dick head and just being a selfish ass. Talking shit about customers in HIS way, talking shit for people hooking up when he wasn’t and holding up the boat when tuna start to boil up top. He was getting so annoying the Capt even went on the speaker and told him STFU and fish. Everyone paid the same to fish. This isn’t his boat.
Other than him and one other guy the rest of the on duty deck hands were cool. Pretty quick to clean deck and help us out and gut the bagged fish.
Ended up closing out at Desperation Reef with a bunch of other boats to make up some numbers and land some bass sheep head and a few hooked up to some decent YT tuna. So it wasn’t a wasted trip.
Also cool I’ve seen then donate Charter tickets to charity events and support children organizations. So that ears some respect right there too.
Decent charter. I would recommend it. Don’t get too caught up into some of the reviews that focus on landed or not landed fish. That’s part of fishing. Sometimes you hook up, sometimes you don’t. Way of the world. Not cool to slam a crew/​company for something they cant control.

I was on a boat cruise yesterday to Catalina aboard the Liberty at pier 55. It was supposed to be the all day tuna boat (fishing for yellowtail Tuna). Our boat caught 2. Nothing else. The Skipper was very experienced but not lucky on this trip. He gave us a 50% discount card for next time. The cook was great. 2 of the deckhands were helpful. Mike the lead crewman was obstinate, rude, belittling, unfriendly, and a complete jerk. 10 days ago I was on the Liberty and we only caught a handful of «yellows». The crew were ok then. If I ever fish out of Long Beach again I will not be on the same boat as that idiot Mike. He needs customer service classes. It my younger days I would have put him in his place. NOW I rely on Unilocal to establish a point.

Last Saturday 09÷05÷15 I bought ¾ day from 6 AM to 3PM fishing trip on the Liberty. The trip was 40 minutes late. When we were still on the boat, the captain said the boat does not have the live bait nor squid, so he told everyone to fish mackerels at the dock. When the boat left the dock about 1 mile, the captain told us to fish mackerel for the bait while waiting for the bait. Finally a bait boat came and we had some very small anchovie for chum (throw those little fish to entice other fish. We continue to fish mackerel for our own bait. About 9 am, a bait boat with small sardines, many of those sardines were already dead or very weak. So we wasted 3 hours for mackerel fishing. Because of 3 hours late plus the ship had only 43 out of 90 anglers so the captain canceled the catalina trip to save gas and bait money and we fish at local water near shore with strong cellular reception and within sight of Long Beach.
Many people did not catch anything or very little because bait quality was so poor and the boat did not go far enough.
One deck hand was fishing too but the high school kids who work as deckhands for free were very helpful.
They should extend 3 more hours of fishing or offer customer at least 50% for next trip.

Let me start by saying that I had high expectations from this boat, since I had heard it was a great boat, with a great crew. Well I soon learned that this wasn’t true!
The boat is decent, although i didnt like the bunk beds (small and hard to get into). The crew was terrible. The «deckhands» were clueless and refused to help. All they cared about was catching fish themselves. I asked several times for help and or advise from 2 different deckhands and all they would say was «dude it’s easy, just catch them»…not very professional IMO!
Additionally, I think this boat has an unexpericned captain. I was hoping to go to San Clemente or Nicolas, but intead we went to Catalina, because he said the bite was very good… well it wasn’t. We got there at around 0230 and anchored. We didn’t fish until 0600 – 0630. For about 2 hours there weren’t any bites. After only catching 2 – 3 yellowtails in like 4 hours we finally moved. To keep it short, this captain was clueless. On several occasions he said he saw a lot of activity at the bottom, I think his radar was broke, or he doesn’t know how to use it.
Now, I know I can’t fully blame the captain for a terrible day of fishing, since fishing can sometimes be very slow. BUT, I really think he could have done a better job at finding fish (at one point he straight out gave up and we left about an hour and a half early smh). To top it off our bait sucked!!! Their unexpericed crew messed up, and as a result most of our macks were either dead or dying fast.
Stick to the half day or ¾, because these overnight boats, specifically this boat. sucks!

This review is specifically for the Liberty, fished Wednesday June 10^th.
First off the boat is set up really well, Nice and wide sides where two people can pass each other, plenty of tables inside and outside the galley. Just a cool setup.
The crew and captain were great. Obviously, customer service is stressed and it make you want to come back. Very helpful deckhands that work for you. I’ve fished local boats for 25 years and this was hands down the best crew I have ever fished with. Special shout out to the cook, super cool, professional. Honestly, I still can’t believe the level of service. Keep it up!

Our group of three made a trip out on the Liberty ¾ day boat yesterday.
Only as far as the rigs and 150, after picking up bait, only an hour and half out to the fishing spot. Took a couple of sets to get over the yellowtail, but once we did, it was Booya! Plenty of hook ups, lots of big yellows landed, great time had be all 33 pax on board.
The crew were all very friendly and helpful, assisting the less experienced on the boat, and sharing the latest tips. Great job guys.
We were bummed out about the El Dorado overnight boat being cancelled the night before. Turns out that we probably had a better time on the Liberty.
We’re going back next week. Thanx guys!

Fished on the Eldorado, overnight out to San Clemente Island. The best part about this trip was the actual boat. The Eldorado is newly renovated with a nice galley and plenty of space to fish. The good news ends there.
As for the Captain (TJ) and Crew, I’d say they are pretty weak. Captain didn’t seem to have a clue where to fish around the island and was desperately trying to find yellowtail. We saw working birds and schools of fish breaking the surface, but he didn’t seem to know how to position the boat so that we had a shot at catching them. On one of our particular drifts, we saw another charter boat hang 10 – 12 fish in a matter of 30 min just a short distance off our bow. I’ll give the Captain the benefit of the doubt that it just «wasn’t our day», but I think we could have done some things to increase our chances of catching yellowtail. Captain gave up on fishing for yellowtail in the early afternoon and took us to a reef to catch bass. This was disappointing as we came out to target yellowtail, but I think the Skipper was defeated at that point and just need to put some fish on the boat.
On another note, which has nothing to do with the fishing, the boat is very unprofessional. I couldn’t believe that the deckhands were speaking poorly about the customers (fisherman) who were very inexperienced and needing a little more assistance. There was a minority group (4 Men from the Far East) on the boat and although their skills weren’t the greatest and they caused some tangles, the deckhands should never complain to other people on the boat about them. These men paid their money just like everyone else and deserve the respect of the people who are there to assist them.
The unprofessional nature of this boat clearly starts at the top. The Captain finally came out of the wheelhouse to assist with putting out bait and we had to listen to him berate his crew for putting out too much bait, not helping customers quickly enough, not getting lines out the water fast enough, etc. It was a pretty uncomfortable 10 minutes to see his guys scramble to come up with excuses as to why they weren’t performing to his satisfaction. In my opinion, you never criticize one of your employees in front of your customers. You do nothing but make yourself and your crew look incompetent. Save the scoldings for the wheelhouse or the dock once all your customers are out of earshot. He was clearly taking his frustrations of a bad day fishing, out on his guys.
TJ, when you allow your buddies to come along on one of your trips and do not make them pay, be sure to tell them that the paying customers should have highest priority on the boat. To watch your friends monopolize the best spots on the boat and nudge out the full fare paying folks, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. On top of that, your inflated fish count from our trip that you post on the website and 976 Tuna is the icing on the cake.
All in all, there are too many options out there to settle for inexperienced and unprofessional outfits like this one.

Went on a twilight trip Friday March 13^th on the «liberty» and it was my worst fishing trip ever. We only went out about 3 miles from the marina and the fishing spots the captain took us to were bad, no one was hooking up. It wasn’t till this guy started shouting at the captain to rise that anchor and find a better spot, he finally moved to a less miserable spot, the last spot where the jackpot fish was caught, it weighed no more than 5 lbs. that is BS. Anyway the trip was bad overall and I will never go on the liberty again.

Very disappointing. Firstly, the 6a-​3p trip was more like an 8a-​1p trip.
We went on the ¾ day fishing trip last weekend. The boat left port at 6:30a and took the next hour to get bait. Didn’t get out to our spot until around 8:30a.
We started off the morning with our captain saying we should only use the squid bait at our current location for bottom feeders. Then we spent the next 5 HOURS in the same spot only catching sculpin. It was insane. When we heard the engines starting up all of us were relieved to know that we were moving, but the boat only rotated and literally moved 2 yards and dropped anchor again.
We were told repeatedly NOT to use the live bait which we spent the first hour of the morning getting. The captain was very explicit that we were only to use the frozen squid ALL DAY.
What the hell is going on here? The boat was full of eager fishermen who paid good money for a 9 hour trip. Everyone left with maybe 2 – 3 sculpin each.
A very boring day. All the fishermen on the boat with us felt conned and duped.
That said, the deck hands were very very nice, skilled, and professional. Very patient with the older folks and younger kids on board. The only annoying thing was that whenever they would help with tangles, they would just throw fishing line and other trash overboard. Blatantly polluting.
Spend your money elsewhere.

Triton is a Sportfishing boat that seems to be newly renovated. It can fish about 20 comfortably… has large bait tanks and low easy to fish rails. The captain and crew are pretty good, as it was my first time I’ll need to try it a few times. Berth 55 is not the easiest to find, nor is the dock easy to get to from the ocean. I can’t say I like the longer boat ride, but if they catch fish its fine with me! We did very good on the calico bass as the captain put us on a good spot that day at Catalina. I will have to try the boat again to fish for yellowtail or seabass and see how we do. I like the Triton’s operation, but I’m not too excited about Berth 55 where they are docked. 3.5 stars…

Took my 7 year old granddaughter on her first fishing trip aboard the Liberty
Took about an hour to get right outside the breakwater and fished in about 100′ of water for sculpin. After the small bite died down, I asked if we where moving soon. Their answer was, «what are you talking about, we r catching fish here» BS! After a couple hours of slow fishing, captain said we where moving, finally! We did a complete 360 and ended up on exact same spot! He did this twice. Really??? I’ve been fishing for over 20 years and this is a first. Not to mention, we where back on dry land by 2:30 on a ¾ day boat. Another first! Will not be going back.
On a good note, my granddaughter caught her first fish ever!

Go Triton… I honestly think everyone who gave Triton bad reviews are not familiar with how everything works on these boats or just had a bad fishing day and are just taking it out on the crew.
1) Sure it took awhile to get the bait but it was on our way out to Catalina anyway. No big deal relax…
2) This crew was among the best I have had the pleasure experiencing. One of the best captains, he stayed out late for us and called in favors just to find the good fishing grounds. The deckhand was this young kid named John who ran around helping everyone (Even the drunk guys). Hope your hand is doing better John. The cook could use a touch of personality but 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.
3) Most everyone cought their limit of bonita that day.
Though someone walked off with my fish (most likely by mistake).
All together one of the most epic fishing trips in my experience. Kudos to the crew and captain. I look forward to my next trip with you guys. I would definitely recommend this boat to everyone I know.
Oh p. s. I heard someone on the boat say «no true fisherman Unilocal». This one does.

TRITON… I think not… I DO NOT RECOMMEND BERTH 55… there are plenty of other landing… please stay away from this mediocre place… we went on a full day private charter yesterday. The boat TRITON… oh lord… what can I say about this rookie/​mickey mouse operation. We were scheduled to leave 6am. We did not leave the dock until about 8am. It takes about 30min to get to the bait tank. Takes about 2hrs boat ride to get the front of the island. I decided to take a nap, as soon as I walk out to the deck… the deck was full of dead anchovies. the anchovies are roughly the size of a baby pinky finger. I thought to myself… how the fcuk we gonna hook this bait and expect it to swim?
I had to redo my hook since the hook I use is a little too big for the anchovies. This has to be one of the saddest day of charter fishing ever!!! the squids were not cut, we all had to cut our own baits, I got yell at by the deck dude for using the knife to cut my bait. this boat is no bueno, the el capitain is a rookie… need mucho training.
after a couple hours of trolling the island. el capitain decides it’s time to head back. Another 2.5hrs boat ride back to the dock, el capitain decides he need some gas for his boat. Instead of dropping us off, el capitain went to refuel his boat. It takes about 45min to refuel and by this time, it’s already 7pm. At the refuel station, I was you all can see how they pump diesel fuel into the boat. The deck dude use the fish sacks as a soak rag for the spilled diesel. And guess what? Those rags are going to be reuse for the next run.
not a happy camper… but if ya’ll decides to get on the Triton or any boat at Berth 55.

I’m a fan of fireworks and celebrating America’s birthday, so through Living Social, I purchased two tickets on the Liberty to cruise out toward the Queen Mary to watch the fireworks display on July 4^th.
South Bay Cruises’ (SBC) management of my tickets was very smooth. There were a few changes about how the booking had to be made between SBC and Living Social, and they were administered without me having to intervene. SBC communicated with me via email and answered any questions that I had in a prompt and professional manner.
We arrived for the cruise on-​time and found the dock easily. There were a lot of people, yet there was no line for us to check in. We provided our names and received our blue wristbands to board The Liberty without a hitch.
A large and patriotic pelican sat perched upon the dock welcoming the crowd to his home. The Liberty was the adult boat option. It offered a cash bar and a band. There was a family-​oriented, under 21 years of age boat that was available as well.
Jake «The Honey Bear» Heun, our Captain greeted everyone as they boarded obviously aware of the responsibility that comes with having his fishing vessel full of party goers. He exuded the air of a Captain, and set my mind at ease. Throughout the trip, he kept watchful eye to ensure our safety and to make sure the deck hands were unobtrusive, yet aware of passenger safety. He stood watch and provided ample warning to us, as the boat dropped its large metal anchor into the bay. At various times throughout the tour, I spotted the Captain and his staff doing the work that comes with navigating these waterways, so all of the passengers could have a great time.
We pushed off on-​time and the party began. Of course, the weather was perfect. The notes of The Jim Nichols Band Featuring Estela on Sax filled the soft air with well done, familiar classic rock and blues covers from Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac and Jimmy Buffet among others. Drinks flowed. The grill kicked on. We passed box boats and a battleship, bridges and gantry cranes. The Chief Cook was personable and offered simple fare that was as good as a hamburger, burrito and chips can get. The fireworks show was awesome; made all the more so when passengers began singing an impromptu rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.
We pulled anchor and cruised back to port. The libations had been plentiful and laughter filled the night air as strangers became friends and buddies. We arrived back all too soon having given America’s 238^th birthday the proper celebration she deserves. I can’t wait to do it again in 2015!

4÷5÷14 Twilight fishing was slow tonight. I only caught 1 fish for the night. They did have many give away items on their raffle.
The Westerly is a good sided boat (over 80′) but somewhat uncomfortable with many steps & a small salon. The bait was mediocre, it was frozen squid was still ‘hard frozen’ in a large block. It was work to try and get some of the bait off the block to put on your hook. The crew was friendly and helpful though. A good novice boat with plenty of room between the rail and the house.

Having fished out of Long Beach Sport Fishing at berth 55 many, many times and I felt right back at home after a couple years absence.
Many years ago in my 20’s, 30’s I was a very avid fisherman.
Traveling far and wide and spending at least half of my free time on the water in search of the elusive pescado.
I exhausted countless days, and a great deal of my money doing what I loved, saltwater fishing. Whether it was catching a bucketful of 6 oz Sand Dabs off the coast of Lo or chasing 200 lb Tuna hundreds of miles off shore I enjoyed the pursuit, and ultimately the eating of most things that swim in the ocean.
I have fished on many of the boats out of Long Beach Sport Fishing. ½ day, ¾ day, twilight and overnighters. Some boats better some worse. But overall they run a pretty solid fleet of boats to suit your needs here. The captains and crew work hard to make your trip successful and enjoyable.
While fishing out of LBSF I have been «skunked» catching no (zero) fish and I have also had a few special epic days fishing on her boats. But that’s why they call it «fishing» and not «catching». My most memorable LBSF trip being a ¾ day trip aboard the Victory (no longer there) where I caught and landed 5 yellow tail on a single trip.
These days I do not fish with the frequency I once did but my passion remains, albeit refocused. Now days I am deeply dedicated to youth fishing and one of the things I do is help run an annual Boy Scout overnight fishing trip where boys aged 12 – 17 get to experience a night and a day fishing offshore, usually at one of the local islands. Its always a fun trip for the boys with many going out on the water for the first time.
This year the owner of the newly repowered Eldorado Steve Fukuto stepped up to the plate and gave us a great rate and along with the Friends of Rollo youth fishing charities donation we were able to get a group of 30 boys out on the water at a cheap rate.
A great day of fishing was had off the shores of San Clemente Island. Some good assorted rock fish, red snapper, ling cod, sheep head, white fish, johnny bass, calico bass and more were caught. No exotics but some fine table fare all the same.
The captain and crew were both courteous and very helpful.
Take a kid fishing!

Something about getting a double cheeseburger while at sea. Maybe its the ocean air? I don’t know but they taste better. I wish I could explain it better, but they just do. Breakfast aboard a party boat is always refreshingly good as well.
I have been fortunate to befriend many like minded fishermen who have the same passion for fishing and spreading the love. Please support them as they support our youth.

Both promote and support the ethical usage and sustainability of our local fisheries.
Remember a bad day fishing is still better than a good day doing nothing!
