So disappointed with the food and delivery time. I was staying at local hotel and found this restaurant on Unilocal.I was redirected to Eat24 and everything else went downhill. I ordered $ 47 worth of food and it arrived cold and not welled prepared. I wouldn’t recommend this place when I go to Long Beach, CA again. Sorry

With the gf in LB and we stumbled upon this restaurant. It was a Cambodian restaurant which was why we decided to try the place. Parking was weird and the restaurant was empty when we got there, but the food were good. We ordered Beef Lok La sirloin beef and Ba boong which was BBQ pork consist of thinly sliced cucumber, lettuce, bean sprouts, cilantro, carrot, rice vermicelli noodles and basil. This place is recommended if you are looking for different types of Cambodian food. However, don’t bring your date here because your breath will smell like onion after. So keep your mint handy before you kiss your significant other.

Khmer dishes with American portions! If you’ve ever been to SE Asia, you know everyone there’s skinny. The reason is their portion sizes are so small. Well Sophy’s has solved that problem. Not only do they cook up delicious Cambodian dishes with fragrant spices and rich coconut milk, they give you lots of it. Their signature dish is beef jerky Khmer style. It is a little chewy on the outside but soft on the inside. Amok is another quintessential Cambodian dish. Sophy’s does it a little differently. Because Amok is traditionally served as a delicate morsel wrapped in a leaf, the portion may be a little skimpy for American tastes. Sophy’s Amok is served on a platter as a main course satisfying both palate and stomach. We had read that a number of Hollywood celebrities have frequented the place including Angelina Jolie. We didn’t see any during our visit but the food was well worth the drive from the San Gabriel Valley.

Still one of my favorite thai places in Long Beach. It is a nice, large restaurant, great for families and large parties. The staff is really nice. I recommend the thai beef salad(plea), the salt and pepper shrimp(for the adventurous) and any of the curries.

I was so hungover, like vomiting after drinking a glass of water hungover. Eventually I felt good enough to eat but there was nothing at home and I didn’t want to leave my couch so delivery was a must. I was a little hesitant having never eaten Cambodian food but at this point my small intestine was eating my large intestine so I put on a brave face and ordered the Green Mango Salad and the Thai Boat Noodles. It was like a flavor explosion in my mouth! Sophy’s has the best Thai & Cambodian food I’ve ever eaten. Delivery was quick too.

Don’t Eat here. Save your money. They will rip you off by 1 $, 2 or 3 everytime… I ordered raw beef and shrimp Tom yum, everytime the price changed, each waiter or waitress charged different, I caught them and get dumb responses back from them. I am so done w that restaurant. Be aware guys. Don’t waste your time, go eat somewhere else. I even uploaded the receipt, please look under the tip comment. Pass the word around about this dumb restaurant that over charged customers

Location/Vibe: Family atmosphere. Catching up with a fellow hometown friend in lb type of place. Maybe even a good lunch spot if you want the view of busy PCH next to your table(not meant to be pretty lmao) I’ve came here before and it was sketchy to me once I walked up the steps to the entrance I almost didn’t want to go inside. But since I am familiar with it a little more it was not as sketchy. Service/Food: A lady greeted us at the front and let us sit at the first available table(not like it was busy during lunch) and nicely set the table with a utensils. I thought that was pretty nice of them to set it up(not that it was fancy) but it was almost convenient. I ordered Thai Boat Noodles and a Thai Tea. So far it was tasty. It was just enough to fill me up for lunch. $ 10 ??? Get outta here(fogettaboutit **hint hint for the regulars that look outside the window from the booths) jk it was decent ! I’ll come back with family for a simple lunch. Note: Damn that Thai tea hit the spot though just don’t get boba in it :) and the plates and utensils that came out in the beginning doesn’t stay at your table because once you order the soup they’ll take it away. Weird. Hand me those plates when I’m with a bigger party, otherwise don’t flatter me lol !

Love this place. This is my fifth time coming here and always impressive. Ordered the Beef Jerky, Amok, Tom yum Gai, and everything was good.

I ordered delivery. They said it would be here within 45 – 60 minutes. It took 95. No apologies when they got here even though I had called them not happy about this. The fried bananas were terrible as was the stir fry. Luckily I got ONE thing that was good… AFTER putting three packets of soy sauce on it. Never ordering from here again. Not happy with this food or service!

Similar experience to Ron K. Probably more of a 2.5, but I will go up to 3 because I generally like the place. Been there many times over the past several years– familiarly breeds bad service, in my opinion. Although it was lunchtime on a weekday, the server said service was slow so there is no more lunch menu.(I was like, fine whatever; I like the place and want them to make money.) Water never refilled, despite asking. She finally came to refill AFTER we paid and were ready to leave. Asked for the bill, never got it. Went up to pay and had a written up bill that was difficult to verify.(Usually I get a proper, itemized bill in English; this time, we did not.) Was about to leave a generous tip until I did a mental calculation that the final bill seemed a bit high. I approached later the server and she confirmed that the tip was already included, and she forgot to tell me.(Definitely decreasing my trust.) An unfortunate experience that definitely makes me not want to return. I’m disappointed because I really want to support this business as the owners and many people that work there seem to be very nice; it’s just one particular, chatty/overly-familiar/bad service server and this experience that make me not want to return.

We came with a Groupon. This was my first time trying Cambodian food. Flavors are on point! Everyone already said it, but get the Lok Lak! Good combination of texture, lots of flavor without being confusing, overall really delicious. We really enjoyed this dish and the sauce. We were quiet while eating because it was so yummy. We also got the Amok. The catfish was kind of this crumbly texture though, which I wasn’t too big on. The flavors though were good. It was this gentle curry flavor, not spicy at all. They do charge 1.50 a person for rice, which is kind of more than most places, but they give you a lot. They also never bothered to refill our waters. The space is larger than I expected it would be, and the booths are comfy.

They were really attentive! Dont forget that this place is CASHONLY but if you do they do have an atm machine in the restaurant! Everything was really good. I had the kang panang which was really tasty and you have to have rice with it! The frech bread that was served with it was really soft and great to dip in the curry!

Although the restaurant was located in a sketchy area and the décor was a bit dated, they served amazing Cambodian and Thai food! Service was very friendly and the lady who served us spoke Cambodian. Since there were quite a few of us, we ordered a bunch of dishes to sample! I highly recommend the Vietnamese soup with pineapple and crunch melon! It tasted sweet and a bit sour yet refreshing and savory at the same time! Definitely a great summer soup but I’ll be happy to eat it all year long! Also don’t forget to get the beef sticks, stir fry clear glass noodles, Thai papaya salad and amok. All were delicious and there was no leftover. The only leftover we had was the beef anchovy which was just alright. It could have tasted better. The meat was not of good cut and it was quite chewy. And maybe they could install a fly trap in the restaurant?

Sophy’s has a really fantastic selection of authentic Cambodian and Thai dishes. I think more people are familiar with Thai food than Khmer food(unless you’re Cambodian or living in the LBC), so you’ll see a lot of familiar favorites like Pad Thai and Pad See-Ew on the menu. It makes being adventurous easier because you can order a Khmer dish that you’ve never tried before and a Thai dish to be safe, haha. Tonight, I tried: Lok Lak — Thin cut steak served on a bed of lettuce, tomatos, and cucumbers. The sauce has a lighter consistency than gravy but thicker than dressing. It was made from the steak juices with lemon juice, seasonings, and garlic added. Mee Ka-Thang — Cambodian version of the Chinese dish, Chow Fun. Flat rice noodles with beef, egg, and veggies in a savory gravy sauce. So.effing.BOMB. Catfish w/curry paste — Don’t know the exact name of the catfish dish that I had but I believe the fish was steamed in bananas leaves and then cooked in this curry paste sauce with bell peppers. It was a delightful balance of saltiness, fishiness, and sauciness. Papaya Salad — Khmer-style papaya salad is different from Thai-style because it has more of a crabby taste due to the addition of tiny crabs, while I find Thai papaya salad to be more«lemony-chili.» We also had this soup that I forgot the name of but I wasn’t wow’ed by it anyways. I would have preferred to get the Tom Yum or coconut soup(Thai dishes) than the one we ordered. This soup wasn’t bad but I didnt like the spare ribs in the soup, too rubbery in texture. Overall, the food was delicious but I think a little overpriced. You can get Khmer food at even more authentic and less expensive joints in LB such as Hak Heang or New Paradise(their menus might be in Cambodian but there are some pictures). Also the service was average. They’ve got a great staff but they can work on being a little more attentive.

PDXCONNECTION Several of the folks who run this restaurant are family members of Portland’s Mekong Bistro also Cambodian/Thai. One of my favorite PDX eateries. That’s as far as the similarities go. Here the extensive menu is eight pages of everything to fulfill one’s craving. Their portions are huge and so we just ordered two entrees. #60. Banh Cheo(Asian Crêpe) Pan fry crepes filled with ground chicken, shrimp, bean sprouts and onion. Served with an assorted fresh vegetable, a variety of mint, and crushed peanuts in our tasty sweet and sour sauce #76. Thai Boat Noodles(Soup) Brought to you from the lands of Phuket and Krabi. This soup joins the world of rice noodles with beef, meatball, beef tripe and then topped with cilantro and golden roasted garlic. Served with watercress. We now have a slight dilemma. It’s approaching dinner time and we’re still quite full from our lunch. Maybe that’s another way to speak highly of our Cambodian lunch.

I went here tonight with three friends. I had beef pad see ew which was very delicious. It was a good sized portion and came with ample beef and Chinese broccoli. For only $ 8, it was definitely a bargain. A lot of places make pad see ew that is very oily, but Sophy’s does a great job. My friend had one of the curries, which was very tasty as well. It came with a big bowl of rice which was more than enough. The prices here were amazing. Most items range from $ 6 to $ 10. To make things even better, I had a Groupon that I bought a while back. Although the neighborhood may seem a little rough, since it is not very well lit, Sophy’s is in a nicer part of Cambodia Town. There is a parking lot with lots of spaces, even though it is a little cramped. I had to take a star off because there was a pretty noticeable unpleasant smell of some sort of cleaner in the dining area. I frequently dine at hole in the wall and Asian eateries, so I don’t have unreasonably high expectations for cleanliness, but the smell here kind of bothered me. I smelled it right when I walked in, and it lingered with me throughout our dinner. I don’t know how to describe the smell… kind of like a bathroom smell. Not so pleasant!

So they change their name: Cambioan food and music. That’s what the sign, Unilocal map brought us here. No address on the building. We were a little confused. We had a Groupon for Sophy’s Fine Thai and Cambodian, so we ask and the hostess/greeter stated it’s the same place, same food, name changed. Okay, cool. We were sat in the ‘back’ of the room, window behind us was the parking lot. Most tables were set up for big groups(more than 4), there was two of us, so we had ample elbow room. Since we were familiar with Thai food, we decided to try Cambioan style dishes. We were not sure which was which since the menu seems to combine both both types but decided with the following: Food: 14 chhah kreoung Khmer style stir-fried with bell pepper, kaffir leaf, basil, and spicy lemon grass paste with fillet fish. This was probably one of my favorite dishes. We opted for fish with dish and it was a hit. Flavors were well balanced, not too spicy for me but had the ask for the BF’s taste buds require more zest. For me, it was perfect. 35 Khmer Ginger Deluxe stir-fried freshly cut ginger with chopped garlic, soybean sauce and black pepper then topped with golden crispy ginger. We choose a beef option with this dish because of the ginger being represented in this dish. The flavors, delightful, savory, and I absolutely love ginger(raw or fried)! I could eat it but itself but the beef really balanced out the ginger and garlic sauce, tasty complement meal. This is also my favorite dish. We ordered a side of white rice and water. Brown rice is listed as an option, probably a dollar more than white. No alcohol is served here but that’s okay because the was delicious. I would definitely come back to try come more dishes. What a great find and thanks for Groupon!

I figured 2 ½ years had passed since my social faux pas, and plus, I had a Groupon, and PLUS, I had way more background knowledge with which to appreciate Cambodian food, so I decided to give Sophy’s another try. This time, unfortunately, my appreciation went down. I was able to see that their fish amok came, oddly, with steamed red and green peppers instead of the ‘exotic leaves’ claimed on the menu(I guess there was bok choy), lacking a coconut entirely, and tasting mainly of extremely weak and coconut-milk-heavy yellow curry. The fish was so not-fresh that I ended up spitting out a couple pieces. I also noted that the sauce/spice rub on Julian’s stir-fried green beans(stated long beans on the menu) was very sweet soy-heavy. I still really love the descriptions on their menu and soak them up like I’m reading a novel. I just wish the actual flavors matched the ones evoked in my imagination by the descriptions.

Asian cuisine is my all time favorite. Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipino, Mongolian… you name it. I kept hearing how great Khmer cuisine is… and finally after all these years I got to try it. I heard about Sophys through co-workers and friends and when I used to live in long beach I would always pass by it but never had the chance to dine there. My boyfriend and I had no clue on what to order… but we finally decided on these 3 dishes: Chhan Kreoung with seafood combination Khmer Ginger Deluxe with Beef Combination Fried Rice Food came out quickly and that first bite… AMAZING! The seasoning and flavors were wonderful, portion sizes were bigger than I expected, reasonable prices on the food, and the staff made sure to check up on us every few minutes and refill our drinks and ask how the food was doing. I would of given this place 5 stars for my overall experience, but its CASHONLY, however there is an ATM machine inside the restaurant as well.

** Cash only … BUT… There’s an ATM inside with a $ 2 fee** Our waitress was very nice and the food came out fast. The portions here are pretty big compared to most Cambodian /Thai restaurants I’ve been to and it’s cool they give you a free drink(soda /Thai tea) with your order. I’ve definitely never heard of or been to a restaurant that does that. However, the food was not that great. The Pad Thai had an overwhelming taste of peanuts and the beef in the mee katang tasted old. We ended up throwing out the mee katang later because it just wasn’t any good. =\ Our table was clean, but everything around us looked dirty. I looked up at the light fixtures and they were extremely dirty and need to be dusted. It was gross and off-putting. I’m giving them 3-stars because of the lady who served us, the free drink, and the portion sizes; but it’s really is a 2-star place when it comes to the food. Unfortunately, I would not make it a point to return. Sorry, Sophy! :(
