Stu’s Ae Transmission

I am very pleased with Tim and his staff here! I took my Nissan Xterra 2006 in to him when my car was overheating and I was very stressed out at the time and he was so nice and reassuring about fixing my vehicle in a efficient and timely manner. Tim and his team here found all the problems with my Xterra and had my car running great at the end of this experience! His prices are good and the work is more than sound! He is honest and upfront with all your car needs! I sold my Xterra and felt great about the mechanical condition it was in and bought myself a new Nissan! Now I am going to Tim regularly for my oil changes and maintenance! I will forever be a customer here! Thanks guys for always taking care of me!

I rarely write Unilocal reviews, but felt compelled to do so after having my transmission replaced by Stu’s Ae Transmission. When I spoke with Tim regarding my transmission, he quoted me a very fair price so I took it in to his shop to get repaired. When Tim and his crew began working on my car, they ran into several unforeseen issues. Nonetheless, Tim stuck to his work and provided me the services at his initial quoted price. As someone who does not know much about car engines, I greatly appreciated Tim’s honesty and integrity. I would HIGHLY recommend Stu’s Ae Transmission to anyone!

Tim and his staff are wonderful — The service on my 2006 Ford Expedition was top notch and the price for my service was $ 1000 cheaper than quoted at other places — I am very satisfied with my car and I will definitely be back and have already recommended them to others

I took my car to Stu’s to replace a transmission. They did everything they said they would at a fair price. I will bring my business back!

TL: DR — Would not recommend to my worst enemy. Poor service, dishonest, untrustworthy. they throw smokes and mirrors to make it seem like your getting a deal, but you’re really being shafted. Don’t be an idiot like me and go with this shop.
Car was not going into 3^rd gear, but was able to drive it to the shop. After their diagnosis and test drive, the transmission gave out and I couldn’t even drive it out. Coincidence? Maybe. Realistically, it probably broke more while they were doing testing. I’ll admit, I was upset at first, then I calmed down and hey, it was probably bound to happen anyway. Another thing, one of their tech started yelling at me saying I don’t know !@#$. But whatever, I had bigger things to worry about. Anyways, after talking to Tim and seeing how I really don’t have much of a choice, I went with them for the repair. While I was grabbing my things, I noticed one of their techs left the car dash on, I turned it off and let Tim know that. He said it wasn’t going to be a problem.
After picking up my vehicle, I noticed that the car had trouble starting, but started. I figured the battery just needed to recharge and what better way than to drive it through 5 o’clock 605 freeway traffic. The next morning, the car wouldn’t start which means at the minimum I would be late to work and great, more car problems. I called the shop, and their tech said oh yeah your battery is dying. I called triple a for a jump thinking I would go to a local autozone or something to get a new battery. Tim called me back, I told him I know batteries dies and need replacement but my battery was fine before I took it to your shop, now it’s dying. He said, not to worry and if I take the car in he’ll replace the batter at his cost, he wanted to make this right. I was like cool. So I took my car in, they put the battery in and Tim hands me an invoice. I told him, I thought you were taking care of this, he said no, I said I would do it at my cost, which in his mind means what he pays for in parts. Wtf is that? I told him, I thought you going to take of this for free (mind you, I just spent thousands on a transmission job). He disagreed. I reluctantly gave him my card and told him that if I knew what you meant, I would’ve went somewhere else. Tim said, if you give me a good Unilocal review, then I’ll give you the battery for free. I was like nah man and tried to sign the invoice. Tim rudely said not to sign it, unpolitely pushed the invoice my way, said it was a gift, and basically kicked me out of his shop. !@#$ this place!

Beware! This place is out to take your money. Over priced for lousy work. Took my car here a few month ago when I noticed a leak. They said I needed new axle seals. At the time my transmission drain plug needed to be replaced, so I add that on the job. You would figure a transmission shop that drained your transmission would check the oil for metal. Instead they went on fixing the seals not mentioning my transmission was bad. And of course, the final price was well over the estimate. Their excuse was it took us hours to remove the drain bolt. I thought they specialized in transmissions.

Wish I could give zero stars. Dishonest or stupid? Called Jake to get a ballpark figure to install a floor shift kit on my 66 Ranchero. I was clear I just wanted an estimate and would not hold him to it. He quote me $ 1,200 to $ 1,500! I could rebuild my whole transmission for that.
I did my homework and discovered it’s a $ 200 to $ 300 job.
When I called him back all he had to say for himself was «I’ll admit it was a bad guess.»
Five times what it should cost is not even on the same planet as a «bad guess».
Either this guy knows nothing about the business he is in or he is dishonest. Which is worse?
My take away was he heard a woman’s voice and saw dollar signs. Lame excuses aside, it was INSULTING.
So glad I found out before I even wasted my time driving to the shop.

Good experience. They cost a bit more than my last mechanic, but they have a guarantee and do a really good job. Actually they had to fix something that my last mechanic should have taken care of less than a year ago. Friendly people.

I had a great experience here. Everyone I worked with was very nice and explained every problem my car was having. I was little disappointed that price I ended up paying. Was the same price the dealership was going to charge me even though they said they would be cheaper. But my car is great now and I am thankful for that!

Would like to give a shout out to Stu’s Transmission! We have been going to them for years and they always are very fair and their customer service is fantastik. Prompt phone calls to let you know what’s going on with your car. We are always more than satisfied!

This is THE BEST auto repair shop around. They is a saying in life. «you get what you pay for!». I brought my freshly built 1967 Chevy C10 into Tim for an overheating issue. Tim and Dave jumped right into my truck with the love and passion of restored classic cars. They informed me that my truck needed some serious tuning. Having 550hp under the hood they made my car even more powerful doing the fine tuning. I haven’t been happier to give them my money for a well serviced job. These guys are my new best friends for car services. They are fast, honest, and up to date with all cars and even have blasts from the past knowledge of classics. Thanks guys. Stu was open and honest the first time I went in and had him figure out that my check engine light was on because of a worn gas cap saving me $ 100 so I trusted him. But when I brought it back because it was overheating I was surprised to find he was lacking in the honesty department.
After telling him I wanted my overheating car diagnosed and that I thought it was possibly a faulty fan, he looked at it and told me my fan wasn’t working not knowing that it actually was working because I heard it turn on before I brought it to him the real issue I found out on my own was that it was a faulty fan switch not allowing the fan to turn on when it’s supposed to. He also said my hood cable was broken as well when I knew that it wasn’t it just wasn’t assembled correctly before I shut the hood a few days earlier. He quoted everything plus labor at $ 660 claiming the fan and hood cable needed replacement when I knew those parts were fine like I said, he also said my radiator hoses weren’t assembled properly which I also knew was wrong because I attached them correctly myself. I told him I didn’t have the money and that I would bring it back, yet he continued to harass me saying bad things would happen to the car if I didn’t allow his team to fix it. He tried hard to hustle me and I realize he was doing that because he could have made a killing in sales replacing parts he thought that I thought I needed that were actually irrelevant to the overheating issue. After reading info on the internet, thank the Lord, I was able to make minor repairs myself that completely stopped the overheating issue which basically was a new radiator cap, radiator, thermostat, and fan switch, all totaling way less than his absurd quote. I hope that his business suffers because of his dirty antics so that he can learn to be honest. He thought I was another silly customer that was oblivious to what goes on with vehicles, also thinking he could get away with misleading me to believe certain parts needed replacing so he could make extra cash. A smart customer is a mechanic’s worst nightmare I tried to give zero stars I trieeed!

I’ve been meaning to post a review of Stu’s AE Transmission for a while, just now getting around to it.
I’ve been taking my truck here for about three years now, and I’ve definitely found my mechanic for at least as long as Tim Giffin is running things. Honest, fair, competent and professional.
Here’s an example. Two years ago my transmission was slipping, and Tim told me right off the bat that I was probably going to need a new one. However, he tried his best to help me avoid that. He tried at least two cheaper fixes before we finally had to give in and replace the tranny.
Tim seems to understand he doesn’t need to gouge you — if he treats you right you’ll be back, and he’ll have a customer for life. That’s definitely the case with me.

Found my favorite shop for all my repairs. No haggle and 100% trustworthy service. Took my new BMW in for some regular maintenance and it feels better than before. Thanks Tim!

Let me say this. I am not a consistent contributor to Unilocal.I am a 100% consumer of this service. Stu’s A&E is the «Great Exception». They have been so reliable, and so helpful in keeping my baby (’06 Chrysler 300 Limited) running like new since I got her at 0 miles. It is hard not to share my great satisfaction with the world.
Transmission, Alternator, Thermostat, regular engine/​safety check-​ups. They do it all. They are a knowledgeable, friendly staff. You seriously cant go wrong. Tim, the manager, will give your cars issues to you straight and honest. A no-​nonsense person, but gentle at the same time. He has exceptional interpersonal skills. And the great service and results provides a great combined experience for the consumer.
This place is always packed with cars because people, businesses, and I think even the LBPD, knows who to trust with their automotive assets. If you don’t go, then that is one less person I have to wait behind when my car is there. haha
Tim, who was once just the mechanic that was closer and cheaper than the dealer, turned into the mechanic that I consistently visit, is now the mechanic that I trust as an advisor and a friend. Thank you for making my experience completely satisfactory for the last 2 years. Even if I move out of the immediate area, my loyalty remains.

Yes Stu’s Transmission is as good as it gets. Tim thank you for putting me at ease and thank you for your patience with my million questions. My transmission was rebuilt on my 97 Ford Fusion… a week after we drove up to the bay area and back, the ride was perfect. I will be back and will refer you to everybody I know… THANKS

So expensive shop, they changed my car battery for $ 150 and they installed a smaller size from what I had, if you go to Walmart you can install bigger battery size just for $ 100 or less.

I’m a little late with this review but I’m sorry, I really am.
I came to this auto shop just like everyone else. I was scared they would drain the money out of me just how you hear from every other place… I was scared they would tink with my car so I would come back again. I was scared they would tell me I had more problems then I thought I did so they can work more and get paid to their full. I was just like everyone else… I was scared it would be too expensive… I was scared to bring my car here.
But i want everyone to know that there is no need to be scared anymore. These men have no need for lies. These men… they have integrity, and they will help you. So it’s ok. you can stop looking for another shop because they will take care of you and your vehicle. Sepmer Fi.

I kind of have mixed reviews about this place. My husband’s transmission went out after doing a little research on places I came across Stu’s A E Transmission, they had great Unilocal reviews. The truck runs great and we are pleased with the work but it would have been nicer to know all the little details from the start such as: they say the transmission rebuild comes with a 3 year warranty when in fact they only offer a 1 year warranty and a 2 year LIMITED warranty!
Pros:
They are very friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable
Checked the transmission free of charge
Fast service (I had a price quote and what was wrong with the truck the next day)
It only took about a week for the transmission to be rebuilt which was great!
Offered a 3 year warranty on the transmission which we loved
Cons: (This is where I kind of have mixed reviews)
They price quoted me $ 2400-​$ 2890 +tax (I wasn’t to surprised when it was the max amount they quoted, we figured this)
But I was told it would have a 3 year warranty which is great most places only give 1 year or 2 year warranties. However, it wasn’t until after my husband went to pick up the truck and pay for the service did they change things on us. The 3 year warranty is actually a 1 year warranty and a 2 year LIMITED warranty knowing this information we probably would have shopped around a little more.
Another thing we didn’t care for was the fact that the warranty is only good if we have the maintenance for the truck from them only (ie transmission flush).

Not many reviewers buy several transmission rebuilds a year, but as owner of Fjords of Sweden Volvo, I’ve used and recommended Stus over and over through the years. Their work is excellent and their warranty coverage superb.
There are a lot of fly by night operators and snakes in the grass in the transmission business, but Stu’s is a good honest place that has been in business for years and will be there for years to come. The building is old and the utilitarian architecture dated, but don’t let that fool you; inside they keep up with the newest transmission technology.
They’ve rebuilt several late model Volvo transmissions for my shop and my customers, all of them running well even years later. I send all my front wheel drive transmisson rebuild work to Stus. Strong recommend!
