History

Established in 1987.

Manhattan Fruitier opened in 1987 with the goal of making fresh fruit baskets of unequaled beauty and excellence, inspired by Dutch still-​life paintings of fruits and flowers, exquisitely rendered with lushness and naturalism. For our service philosophy, we looked to the tradition of Manhattan’s 19th century carriage trade, hand-​delivering fresh baskets throughout the city. We now offer a variety of gifts featuring fine cheeses, meats, dried fruits and fresh fruits, in addition to delivering our gifts in the greater New York City area.

Business Owner

Jehv Gold opened Manhattan Fruitier in September 1987. This was preceded by a great undergraduate education at Oberlin College and a crazy detour to law school and a career as a lawyer in NYC. Manhattan Fruitier was Jehv’s successful bid to change the direction of his life. Business was a much better fit for him.

Jehv’s business philosophy is to treat everyone he or Manhattan Fruitier deals with (employees, customers and vendors) with respect and honesty. He values long term relationships in all aspects of his life.

Jehv enjoys running outside (no matter the weather), the family’s French Bulldogs Lily and Massimo, Ultimate Frisbee, reading anything that is well written, watching movies and, most of all, spending time with family and friends.

In my mind, a fruit basket is not what I would think is a very thoughtful or elegant gift; the very mention of them brings up thoughts of glossy cellophane and tacky ribbons. Manhattan Fruitier reinvents this outdated concept and brings it back in a tasteful and somehow personalized package.
I received my basket hand-​delivered to my office. I loved it. With the short note and the focus on exotic fruits (this basket ain’t basic), the gift felt very personal. However, I noticed some of the fruit was already starting to rot. More disappointingly so in the fact that the affected fruit were ones that can traditionally withstand longer periods of time — like the pear and the persimmon. After perusing the website to check out the prices of these baskets, I was taken aback by the steep price tag and felt that the high price should match the quality delivered. I emailed Manhattan Fruitier stating my discontent and immediately, the day after, I received a bigger and even more beautiful basket as a replacement. The fruits were fresh and I had what was probably the best cherries I’ve ever had. I really appreciated their efforts to make amends and their quick action.
Manhattan Fruitier’s customer service and fruit quality go above and beyond, but it comes at a cost. These are not cheap (and neither is the delivery!). For a special person or even a business client, these fruit baskets are a great choice for a sophisticated present.

Not only are the extremely rude as a business but the van driver which was sporting a big beard and a cap cut me off on second avenue in Manhattan and called me a f-​ing f – got. Wow that was completely uncalled for. Stay away from them. There are better quality companies that do more than them and don’t use prejudice language.

Called to check on the status of an order in the middle of the day on a Friday, and their phone system said they were closed. However, according to their business hours, they are open. Recipient hasn’t received anything and I paid (wasted) a lot of money on the basket. I’m never ordering from here again.

Agree with the other negative posts… my sister got me the «tropical» assortment which amounted to a mango, asian pear, avocado, blood and regular orange, and a kiwi along with crystallized ginger and dried mango. Basically she paid $ 100 for what would have cost $ 10 at the grocery store downstairs. Beautifully packaged but it seems like they go with the cheapest possible assortment for the given time of year… or maybe December is just an awful time for fruit but a little honesty with what we were getting would have been nice. If you want tropical fruit in NYC, head to Chinatown.

Since when are 2 plums, 1 apple, 2 clementines, an avocado, a small red grapefruit, a pomegranate, 2 pears and a persimmon exotic? I can get all these at my local supermarket, what a rip off.

Beautiful High Quality baskets! I was so surprised to see anything but stellar reviews. I have done business with this company for years and have never had a problem. My clients and friends have always loved the baskets. I started using them after someone sent me one of their baskets and it was as beautiful as a painting.
Most fruit basket companies are cheesy at best. Manhattan Fruitier always sends a beautiful product and now has expanded way beyond fruit. I love sending their gilded chocolate cake for birthdays!

The gifts are high quality and just wonderful for all occasions and the wicker baskets make for a great presentation.
The first time I used them it made my wife’s day. She was so surprised, absolutely loved the gift, and everyone in her office were jealous.

reading Julie’s review below, no wonder they cant get your order right. because apparently it is too confusing for this company to process even one order.
ordered the citrus basket on Gilt, packaging slip confirms citrus basket. and this is what i got:
the avocado even had the upc label on it. if you are going to put together a basket with stuff from Whole Foods and charge 2 times the price at least get the contents right.
and you know what’s the best part? it was for my girlfriend who wanted that basket specifically. imagine how embarrassing it was for me.

Customer service was excellent how ever the quality of their product is mediocre at best. I have had better fruit from my local super market and at the price they charge for the fruit (which is fine) I was expecting the best in the USA which was not the case. Again presentation, delivery, and customer service were great but the actual product was a real let down for what you pay for.

I can’t say enough good things! I ordered a large gift of fruit, chocolate and flowers to be sent out for mother’s day. I even customized the order by switching out the chocolates… It was a hit! And their costumer service was outstanding when my mother called because she had some questions… Thank-​you for making my mother and grandmother feel so special!

Placed 3 orders with them and apparently it is too confusing with them to sort out. Order A, B, and C. Order A was sent fine. I called and emailed them to cancel order B. And then I placed Order C the next day. Well, apparently it was too confusing for this company. Because they not only canceled order B, they canceled Half of order C as well. I never gave any info to mess with order C! yet send half only! So to my disdain, only one client got an order and the other did not! Waste of time. For that I will not order again.

Very unhappy with the basket I ordered and sent an email about my concerns. No one responded so I called. Was told that the mail order person was not there but they would talk with him the next morning and call me back. I was not called back. I am going to dispute the charges. Poor customer sercie

This is my go-​to gift basket place for film producers, movie stars, visiting foreign dignitaries, etc.
1.) Because they’re high-​quality, classy and NOT CHEESEY like most gift baskets.
2.) Because they hand-​deliver locally.
3.) Because it has the name «Manhattan» in it. Yes, I’m serious. These are LA people we’re talking about. :)

As I mentioned in my previous review, I spoke to a customer sales representative. I also then called back to speak to a manager who basically told me the same thing — to look on the outside of the box for a white piece of paper that you tear open to read the message. Then I wrote my Unilocal review. Today, I was contacted by the owner about my review and he said that since 9⁄11 they moved the message outside the box because people were hesitant to open unexpected packages. However, now they are changing their method to include the message both outside the box and inside the gift basket. For my inconvenience, he also offered to refund the cost of my gift basket. I appreciate the effort made to correct the situation and with the message both outside and inside the gift basket, I would consider using them the next time I need to send a gift basket.
