Aikido Academy Los Angeles, the headquarter of Aikido Kobayashi USA, is a traditional martial art aikido dojo located in Los Angeles, California. We offer group kids, teens and adult classes for men & women of all ages and levels as well as private one on one instruction. New students and visitors are always welcome to observe and train with us.

Business Owner

Aikido Academy Los Angeles founder and head instructor Michael Jacyna Sensei, began his practice of martial arts at age 8, starting with Karate followed by Tae-​Kwon-​Do and Aikido.

In 2003, he relocated from Europe to Los Angeles, CA and began offering kids and adults aikido training. Aikido Academy Los Angeles opened it’s doors in 2011 where he is pleased to offer Aikido instruction in the tradition and lineage of Hirokazu Kobayashi Shihan (1929 – 1998), student and frequent assistant of Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba O’sensei.

Michael Jacyna is a professional aikido instructor, godan holder (5th degree black belt), fluent in English, Polish & Czech and welcomes both American & international students at the dojo.

My six year old son started Aikido Academy in January. I asked him if he likes it… and he said «Mommy, I don’t just like it… I LOVE IT!!» Sensei Michael has such a great way with the kids, fun but disciplined. There is a genuine sense of joy and adventure in each class. As a mom, I really appreciate the fact that the kids practice/​learn with the adults who help demonstrate the moves and pair up with the children. My son gets one on one instruction in every class. In two short months he has progressed tremendously. My son also plays soccer, tennis and baseball and when I ask him which one he likes best — he always says… Aikido class, Mommy!

I was looking for aikido classes from long time ago, its really complicated to find right place and right sensei (master). Michael one of the best masters around the world, very energetic, good attitude, sharp European sense of humor. He is the only one presenter of aikido kobayashi school in US of big Japanese and European community. I’m personally highly recommend Aikido Academy Los Angeles from the beginner’s way up to the way of «lifestyle of aikido»!

Michael Jacyna Sensei is a true budoka of Kobayashi Aikido.
This dojo will inspire you to practice and it will allow you to appreciate things you probably have not noticed in life before. Michael Jacyna Sensei is able to find a unique approach to every student. He is great and knowledgeable educator. Moreover, he organizes large seminars couple of times throughout the year.
I felt blessed at some point that some invisible forces in life lead me to this particular dojo and granted me unforgettable experience to learn about Aikido first hands from Michael Jacyna Sensei. People who practice in this dojo are very nice and it feels like family in there. This dojo is for true aikidokas who seek for harmony in martial art application.

Sensei Jacyna teaches a curriculum founded on hard work, patience, and respect. Respect for your fellow students, and for the time we are all spending to learn. He has a friendly, approachable disposition, and is always very warm and welcoming, both to members and non-​members alike. The students here come from all walks of life, and the dojo is laden with a connected, family atmosphere. Everyone helps everyone else, there is no sense of having to fit in, or prove yourself to your fellow students. When test times come around, everyone helps the candidates review (often taking their own time to do so).
Sensei Jacyna has a keen sense of progression and capability, and knows when to say «try harder», and when to say «slow down». You never feel like you being unduly pushed into something you cant do.
The practicality of techniques is often described alongside the artistry. We do not practice «voodoo» at this dojo, and nothing is chalked up to magic movements. Foundation is stressed over flashy choreography, and everything must make sense.
I can say a lot of positive things about my experiences as part of this dojo, but the most significant would be that I often wonder who I would be had I found aikido earlier in life. I’ve discovered another way of thinking about things, and approaching everyday situations that I didn’t before. Where ever my life may lead in the future, I’m thankful that this journey began here.

Michael Jacyna Sensei is very passionate about aikido!
I found this class after trying to find an aikido class that could fit my busy schedule. I previously had many years of training in Aiki Kai style of aikido, and was impressed by Sensei’s ‘Kobayashi’ style of aikido of which I previously never heard of. I was immediately taken by his very elegant yet powerfully martial technique. I think many former students of Aiki Kai will find this unique style of Aikido very complementary and powerful. Because Kobayashi aikido is so rare here in the United States, Michael Jacyna is quite a treasure to any aikidoka and I encourage other students of aiki kai to come check out this rare style of aikido.
Most notable in his teaching is how integrated everything is, especially weapons as the bokken and jo, into the classes.

Our Sensei Michael Jacyna created a friendly and full of respect environment in our class.
We have different people from different countries, but I feel like we all are one big family.
Of course, being a woman I described my emotional perception)

I’ve studied several martial arts before and have been to as many dojos, but the Aikido Academy of Los Angeles is easily one of the best I’ve been to.
The instructor is a seasoned veteran of the art and has learned from some of the best practitioners in the world. He does a great job of explaining the techniques and philosophy of the art while giving you practical outside applications for real world self defense.
As far as dojos go, this is one of the biggest and best equipped I’ve been to. Unfortunately it get’s a little hot at times because the space is so large they rarely turn on the AC, but then again I’m there to work out, not lounge.
