Samosa House Silverlake

This place is fine if you’re seeking plentiful fast Indian food. It’s basically the Panda Express of Indian food. The best item on the menu, in my opinion, are the samosas (it is «Samosa House,» after all), but I tried various curries and they were bland to my tastes. The paneer had too much cream, and the garlic naan was crunchy on one side and didn’t really taste like garlic. I think I if I’m ever hung over, this food would be a great cure, but if I’m looking for more authentic fare, I’ll go elsewhere.

Best Indian food I’ve ever had. The veggie chicken is to die for. I love mixing it with the yogurt curry! This place is my go to whenever I’m craving rich, delicious food. You must give it a try!

Really good Indian food and pretty nice restaurant. The combo is great for lunch and is affordable at $ 10 bucks. Awesome spot for grab and go if you really want a samosa or two for less than $ 2 dollars a piece. The naan and samosa are fresh to order and taste and look like it. I believe it’s all vegetarian Indian cuisine as I didn’t spot anything with meat in it. Not a problem even for giant carnivore like myself as I’m always up for an alternative grub once in a while.

I got the combination plate, which comes with 3 entrees for $ 10. There are about 10 entrees to choose from and I honestly don’t know what I got, but shit was fire. Only two options weren’t vegan. The combo plate comes with white or brown rice, soup (if you’re vegan) or yogurt, and garlic or naan bread. The garlic bread isn’t vegan btw. They should really give you the option of a combo plate with just one or two entrees. It’s soooo much food and way more than enough to make you full. Come here if Night + Market Song is packed up the ass. It’s just one block down Sunset.

Samosa House is one of my favorite places for an affordable Indian feast. Parking is impossible around here, so if you’re ordering to go, bring a buddy who can stay with the car and idle somewhere while you get the food. One of the greater perks of marriage — you always have a buddy.
I go nuts for the dishes you won’t find at a normal Indian restaurant, like jackfruit curry and smoky cauliflower. Almost everything else falls flat for me (though I keep ordering the chanas because I so desperately want them to be good), but the stuff that’s great is SO GREAT that it keeps me coming back. Other standouts are the chapati (order it instead of the naan, so good!!), the sambar, and all of the chaats. The chaats are made to order and are listed up on the board. I especially love the samosas (duh) and the bhel puri.
I’m so happy Samosa House expanded to the east side so I can get my jackfruit fix whenever I want!

Sadly, this is the only Indian restaurant that I have tried thus far and it did not disappoint. They have a great selection of vegetarian dishes. I’ve tried the curry chicken, jackfruit, squash and corn, smoked cauliflower and the lentils — all were absolutely delicious. I always opt for garlic naan and white rice. You can choose brown rice for an additional $.50.

I wish there were more joints like this, spread out evenly across the country. I basically always want indian food, veg or otherwise, and samosa house is quick, convenient, and tasty. It reminds me of new york’s many punjabi delis which are both cheaper and a bit better, catering primarily to the city’s cabbies.

It’s good the plate ginger Chai except the rice. Which is only ¾th cooked. could have been basmati rice. Quantity should be more.

I’ve only ordered out here, but it was fantastic each time. It’s 100% vegetarian, but I assure you carnivores will love it too. Everything is fresh and well-​prepared, as well as reasonably priced. I appreciated that the woman who was serving me the most recent time, perhaps the owner, took the time to make recommendations of what to try.

Note that this place is cafeteria style so probably more appropriate for lunch or a quick dinner than date-​night. With that being said: prices are good, the food is fresh, and the restaurant is cute! We popped in for take-​out and were quite disappointed that we couldn’t buy beer to go, especially because all the liquor stores on the street were closed for some reason. No Kingfisher for us, unfortunately! If you’ve never had cooked jackfruit before, this is the place to try it! A unique flavor and good meat substitute. We will be back!

To be honest, I’m the last person to endorse, let alone, try, anything vegan/​vegetarian or any sort of healthy variation that disregards meat, but it’s good. Really good.
It’s «deli» style where you order from the counter and pay at the end of the line, so service is quick! Don’t be dismissive though. It’s still got a sexy-​feel to it. So, go on. Bring yo’ hungry date.
My favorite is the Paneer and Chana Masala, but honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything. Everything is packed with such great spices and savory flavor.

This seems to be a favorite haunt of some of the coolest Silverlake vegans that I know, so I thought I better give this a try before I become totally irrelevant!
I am not vegan or vegetarian, but I enjoy and appreciate ethnic foods with intense flavors — the meat doesn’t make or break that! So yes, vegetarian food can be FULLY filling and satisfying.
But I digress…
The things that people love about this place were the things I didn’t like:
— the «soy» chicken in the «tikka masala» style dish kind of ruined the whole thing. Why can’t they use tofu?
— the rice was very disappointing, did not pass for basmati at all. But is very good plain white rice.
— the cost — $ 28 for my husband and I; but for the same (and sometimes less) amount, there are several Noho and Mid-​Wilshire Indian food restaurants where we often enjoy sit-​down, waiter service, with much better tasting food, and that includes beer. So the «such a cheap option!» rave doesn’t strike me as… true.
Seeing that this joint doesn’t taste like the Indian food I am used to, I’m not likely to go back; but I hear that vegans «HAVE to eat *somewhere*», so I may refer a few visitors and friends in this direction. They won’t know what their missing from the Chicken Tikka Masala anyhow!

This is what matters — 10 bucks for a combination plate which includes three dishes and rice and a bunch of sauces and probably some other stuff too. I am English which means I’m from England which as everybody knows it is the home of Indian food. So I know what I’m talking about. In terms of quantity, quality and overall value for money and total satiation you have found what you’re looking for. Also the mango Lassie is one of the best on the planet. Yes, Lassie — Come Home.
I should add that I give this five star review despite having received a $ 700 parking ticket for parking in the loading passenger zone at the side for all of 30 seconds and being dealt synthesist ticket shit stuff. But the guys who owns this place do not own the road nor do they control the fascist ticket masters. Shanti.

First off, I’m by no means a vegetarian. I love eating meat and I usually notice when my meal doesn’t have any. Not here though! The veggie chicken is just fine, but just about all the dishes are sufficiently hearty and savory, so you don’t even have to target fake meat here.
The dal, paneer and lentils are all plenty hearty. Throw in a delicious potato rich samosa with chutney and any meat eater will be plenty full and plenty happy. All for $ 12.
If you want to really have a treat, I’d say throw in a $ 5 plate of Samosa Chaat. It’s 2 samosas covered in a whole plate of deliciousness of beans, veggies, chutney, yogurt and spices.
Full Disclosure: I was eating the combo plate and samosa minding my own business, and they just randomly gave out a couple Samosa Chaats for free for no reason at all (other than their own awesomeness).
So yes, my review of the Samosa Chaat may have been bribed with a free sample plate — why don’t you go and see if you can get bribed too!

Went here with my boyfriend who is normally a heavy meat eater, but we both very much enjoyed our vegetarian food. We ordered two samosas and split a combo meal with pakora curry (good), «chicken» makhani (yummm-​definitely can tell that it is soy, but good flavor) and then chana (very unremarkable). The raita and rice were standard.
Only weird thing was that our garlic naan (delish) came out about mid meal, and the samosas came out after our food (they are normally an appetizer). I know they have the whole cafeteria line serving style so of course the combo platter is ready to go immediately, but I would have just appreciated them saying the naan and samosas take a little extra time so we can serve you this now or together. But it was nice to know that they were making those things fresh, so I appreciated that.

Let me preface my review by saying I am Indian. I feel like that is relevant here. I am always on the hunt for good Indian food in Los Angeles but haven’t found a place that would rate 4 or higher. Sadly, this place isn’t it either. If you are Indian, stop reading. I can save you time: you will not like this food.
The ambiance is nice and it looks clean (didn’t use the bathroom). The cafeteria trays were pretty gross though and didn’t really match the restaurant style. They should invest in some cheap light silver trays — fits into the style and also are easy to wash but don’t look as crappy.
Parking was an adventure — took my friend and I half hour. So. we were extra hungry when we got in there. We both got the combos where you get rice, naan and a serving of your choice of three buffet dishes. ($ 10 with white rice, $ 10.50 with brown). Between us, we tried the jackfruit curry (creative and one of my faves), the smoked cauliflower (by far the best), the chana (very bland), the spinach (also bleh), the veggie chicken in a creamy curry sauce (I think these are soy nuggets — not a fan of this), spicy eggplant (was not spicy — but this one was not bad either).
If I were to go back, which I don’t think I will, I would order just the smoked cauliflower over rice (not sure that’s an option). Since it’s buffet style, the food is just sitting out all night and it tastes like it. It’s not as spicy (and I don’t just mean hot spicy — I think it’s lacking spices). I was also horrified that they charge 60 cents for mango pickle. I have never seen that anywhere before. For $ 10+ for a plate of pre-​made indian food, you should have covered the cost of the pickle. That is pretty tacky!
So, I am sad to report… not a fan. :(Amazing Indian food… I miss you.

Why so much love for Samosa House?! I hate leaving 1-​star reviews, but I had the hardest time enjoying the food here.
First, I like the concept/​convenience factor here. You go through a buffet-​style line, they serve you a plate that’s «cafeteria style.»
What I did not like was 1) because it’s buffet-​style, you don’t actually know how fresh the food is, 2) it was EXTREMELY salty to the point where I had to chase my food with glasses of water, and 3) it was so flavorless, and the curry sauces were so thin and watered down.
I had been warned by friends that SH is not the best, but Unilocal reviews persuaded me to go. I’m glad I tried it, but I really will not go back.

When I walked in, I was a little worried. The décor was gorgeous but also seemed inauthentic. By the time I tried the food, all my worries melted away.
I went to eat with my vegetarian friend, and this place was perfect. The samosas were huge and delicious. The pani puri blew me away — so many spices and flavors. I’ve eaten a lot of naan in my life but the garlic naan was the most delicious, fluffy naan I’ve ever had. For the combination plate, I ordered the lentils, cauliflower, and potato curry. I loved the cauliflower dish; the lentils I’d skip next time.
My biggest complaint for the whole place is that the décor and everything is so nice but they ruin it by serving everything on cafeteria trays, paper plates, and plastic silverware.
Street parking was a pain (especially since there’s a lot of construction going on at the moment at that intersection) but that’s Los Angeles for you.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this restaurant!

Indian food served like Chinese fast food platter except the restaurant is pretty nice. Outdoor seating is cute but unstable.
Cauliflower, garlic bread are good. 3 choice combination with brown rice is $ 10.50. Was told the fried milk ball is pretty good. Again, I’m not an Indian food guru or close to one, but I don’t enjoy some not so greasy ones.
Parking is difficult as usual, walked instead.

My first introduction to Samosa House was on the Westside, and for years I was a regular at the original Samosa House on Washington Blvd. with the market attached to it. Therefore, you could imagine how happy I was when I saw one pop up on the Eastside, more specifically, in my neck of the woods.
I was a little sad to see Dusty’s go. For a diner that had been there for years, there was a charm about it that spoke of its age and presence within the community. However, I do think Samosa House was a good replacement, fitting in with the other vegetarian/​vegan restaurants in the neighborhood and a delicious option for Indian food. Now, going there after I discovered it was the test to see how it matched up to it’s original Westside counterpart.
It’s definitely a schmancy upgrade to the original restaurant on the Westside, but so is the rest of Silverlake, as it is fit for the hipsters who frequently eat there. What I do appreciate about this location, is that it does not fall short in the quality of the flavor and options that the Westside location offers and compliments the nice décor to complete not only the presentation but what lies underneath it, the rich flavors to your palette that Samosa House is known to bring.
It’s not Samosa House without their jackfruit, garlic naan, tikka masala, amongst other delicious entrees and of course what they’re named after their «samosas»!
The only downfall about this location that prevented me from giving them a full 4 stars is the parking. There’s only street parking which can be hard to find at times, with a small lot that you can use across the street during the day.
If you’re ever craving yummy Vegetarian Indian food and are in the Silverlake/​Echo Park area, have no fear about trekking to the Westside anymore. You don’t have to go far to enjoy Samosa House on the eastside.
