Shleppers Moving & Storage

The manager or «owner» of Shleppers told me he didn’t care about bad Unilocal Reviews… but I am going to write one anyway. If you are thinking of using this moving company, DO NOT DO IT. THIS COMPANY IS HORRIBLE. I didn’t take the Unilocal reviews too seriously, and I even mentioned them to the woman who scheduled my and she told me not to worry, that these things only happened because these customers were moving long distance, and my move is really easy (just 6 hours away from Los Angeles). Anyway, somehow she talked me into using Shleppers, which is a terrible company that has disgusting good customer service or horrible management.
I booked my move one month before my move date.(One would assume the date you book is the date they move). I already drove some of my stuff to a new city, and started living there, but I purchased a plane ticket to come meet Shleppers and move my large furniture. The day before they were suppose to move me, they called me to tell me they could no longer move me on that day. I argued with them for an over an hour, and said I flew down to Los Angeles to meet them, and that I already started a new job, and there was no way I could move another day. I booked my move 1 month in advance and they call me the DAY OFF MY MOVE. They said there was absolutely nothing they could do for me, and they over booked. What company overbooks on a day that I schedule 1 month in advance!!! That is just poor management and customer service. And the woman I was arguing with on the phone was rude and demeaning. Her name was Danielle. They clearly got a better paying job and decided to push me aside. They even told me to find new movers… It wasn’t until I had a man call and threaten to sue them that they «decided» to come and move my furniture on the original date. As if moving isn’t stressful enough, Shleppers makes it even more stressful.
So they pick up my furniture… after hours of arguing… and hours of a major freak out…
They said they would hold my furniture for a month, and I gave them 4 dates that worked for me for them to come and drive my furniture to my new house. 4 dates. And of course they were unable to deliver on any of my dates. The wouldn’t even give me an estimated date or time they would deliver. They said there were no guarantees at all… They said that if I wasn’t home, they would drop my stuff off at a storage company, and I would have to pay them!!! WTH. The «owner» who was also rude and demeaning, said that the delivery date on the contract is a window. I explained to him that a window has a beginning and an end, and he said to me «well I don’t know what to tell you.» Then a week later some other person calls me to tell me that she is giving me an update, that there is no update. It was really helpful… She said my furniture might be in Arizona or something. For all I knew, Shleppers stole my furniture.
FINALLY, I got my furniture. Of course, they delivered on a day I was working, and thank goodness I had someone to meet them, otherwise they would have probably just dropped my furniture off on the lawn for all I know. The delivery guys are pretty nice, but I feel bad for them, and think they should quit working for such an unprofessional, rude, and mismanaged company. I feel bad, because they are probably paid shit, because they try and FORCE you to tip them, but how could I tip them after dealing with such bad customer service!!!
Shleppers sends you an email regarding «Information before you move» and one section says: How much should you tip? As in other service industries, gratuity is customary. When your move is finished, Shleppers recommends giving a gratuity of 15−20% of the total cost of your move to the movers. If you prefer, you can give the entire gratuity to the foreman who will distribute it to the team. You can pay the tips to the movers in cash, or you can add it to the credit card bill.
Why would they suggest this if they are going to give you such bad service.

If I could give no star I would. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!
*This company should be shut down– it’s run by non educated scammers. They don’t tell you the situation b/​c they know they would be out of business if people knew the truth.
For starters
THEY LOST ALL OF OUR CLOTHES but that’s not even the beginning .
Let’s talk about the HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, «insurance policy» & how they handled themselves! after that you will find a list of other things lost /​broken with the money breakdown.
When my items showed up broken and missing, Dave would not return my calls. I HAD TO CALL FROM A DIFFERENT NUMBER TO GET HIM TO PICK UP! (excuse me are we in high school?) when I did get him on the phone, he had nothing to say except he would get back to me. No one even said I’m sorry, we are working on it, I’m sure we will find it– nothing! I finally got the owner Zion involved who was equally as unhelpful .
Zion (owner of CIVIC) wrote me an e-​mail with over 8 words misspelled, no punctuation and careless typing errors. I’m sorry, but you are a «professional» company, the owner even… and that’s the kind of care you take when addressing your customers! It’s called: take your time, read before you send and lastly spellcheck.
After months of arguing back and forth as to how all these items could be lost– I found the truth. THEY HAVE NO WAY TO TRACK YOUR ITEMS– b/​c they don’t have their own drivers or trucks. What does that mean? Well, they basically throw your stuff in a truck that has tons of other shipping companies items in it. These loads are shipped all over the country, adding & subtracting goods as they go. With multiple people in charge of sorting, and no paperwork involved, how could this work? So the guys driving think they know what goes where, but if one person messes up there is no way for anyone to find out. Even if someone else gets your item –they would call THEIR shipping company not Civic and their company would be clueless.
The driver tried to give us 2 items that were not ours and since we were his last stop– he threw the items away!
In addition CIVIC tried several times to get more money from us. They changed the price on delivery and held our stuff hostage until 3 hours later when I proved them wrong — they tried to overcharge us $ 350+
All Zion (owner of CIVIC) wanted was for me to get out of his hair and file a claim because they only give you 0.06 per lbs — so we lost countless items valued over $ 5,000 and they gave us $ 62 and try and call it even!!! I don’t even want my stuff back– I want to sue them for acting as a shipping company.
Lost/​broken :
–Our new mattress had the plastic torn off it and was black with dirt –worth $ 700 (cleaning alone cost $ 100) got $ 0!
Both our bikes broken– mirrors and gears (one bike no longer peddles) –worth $ 800 got $ 0!
Our room dividers broken — worth $ 220 got $ 0!
2 glass art pieces shattered –worth $ 100 got $ 0!
Suitcase filled with work products LOST-​worth $ 1,500 got $ 20 for it
Large 7′ custom driftwood lamp LOST –worth $ 200 — got $ 6 for it
Our HUGE box of ALL our clothes LOST — worth –invaluable…hand sewn dresses, vintage shirts, jackets from closed stores, I’d say over thousands of dollars in merchandise alone. Got $ 36!

We used civic when we moved out of our place earlier this year and had a horrible experience. Just like another reviewer, the truck battery went out. They rushed trying to unload 4 hours later and ruined a lot of our furniture and they still didn’t finish. Had to store overnight. We have moved again since then with a different company and were by far better. Clearly, we picked the worse the first time and makes everyone else seem 1000% better.

Update ⁹⁄₁₅: I noticed that the previously named Civic Van Lines moving company has renamed itself Schleppers Moving & Storage. Do not get it confused; they are the same company. Clearly they are shedding their previous name because of issues and trying to start anew. Don’t fall for it!
Moving is a heck of a stressful and expensive process when moving out of state and a good mover can either make that experience better or more stressful. Unfortunately, what started out as a good moving experience with Civic Van Lines, quickly turned into one of the worst experiences I’ve had moving — and that’s coming from someone that’s moved out of state twice and in state 2 times a year for the past 5 years.
I ended up switching to Civic Van Lines the day before my move date because my original mover, American Moving Group, did a bait and switch and increased my quote 2X what they’d originally quoted. I spoke with Dave at Civic and instantly felt at ease — he’s a very nice guy. I paid the deposit and was excited to get back on track with moving the next day. I get a call the next day from the movers to give me a heads up that they were on their way — Awesome! Then I get a pocket dial from the same guys and can hear them talking crap about me! I was astounded… the movers arrive and from the get-​go were extremely aggressive and seemed pissed off about something. I called some people to come over and hang out with me after seeing and feeling their vibe that made me extremely uneasy. I ended up talking to them about the pocket dial and their visible issues with me for reasons unknown to me and it seemed like things got back on track. They did their work, I paid and the deal was done. By the end of it, I had them laughing and everyone was at ease again.
Everything was well and good until they had our belongings and we needed to get a delivery date. They will NOT give a delivery date to save their lives… in actuality, they told me my stuff would be delivered by a certain date and it wasn’t. They actually took my stuff to a storage facility for a week, which was complete news to me, and then delivered a week later than they had told us. We ended up sleeping on the floor in Texas for a week because of this and the delivery movers called us 4 hours before delivering to let us know they were coming (NOT enough time!), were late and showed up at 3am. We stayed up till 5am going through the inventory as they unpacked and found tons of broken items. I was told the delivery movers would put my furniture back together they disassembled for transport — nope, these guys knew nothing of it. In the end, we ended up paying ~$ 3K and had a world of hassle, stress and tears. We will be moving ourselves next time!

Dave on the phone was super helpful and took great care to ease my mind that they were there to take care of everything.
Vlad, Earl and Victor came to my house to load my belongings and to help pack miscellaneous items. They were so friendly and helpful… I even got to take a short nap while they worked. :)
Thank you, guys… you’re truly heroes today!

Today was my move day and I couldn’t ask for much but these guys Joseph, tommy, Chris were such hard workers and I’m very satisfied with the guys helping me move but once they got into Civic Van lines moving truck and I was in my car and ready to go the truck would not start these poor guys had to ask the guys doing landscape for a jump because they had a big truck themselves, this beast that civic Van lines owns and use for moving should retire, I paid over $ 500.00 to move, the truck not working took me longer to wait for the truck to start, I talk to this lady name Esther she was rude, no class, no respect she treated terrible, not only I was humiliated truck breaking down in Front of neighbors this move was t smooth, I would never use them again or refer their services to anyone, I still has to pay the whole amount even when the company truck used was a piece of crap,

A bunch of thieves. The will come and up charge you on every count. Walk up a flight of stairs thats $ 100 more. Walk more than 75 feet, $ 100 more. They will push to crate everything and try to charge you $ 150 each time.
They arrived 4 hours late and their van was too small and they had to do two trips. Of course i got charged x2!
When i refused to pay the extras they said that they would not release my stuff and will put it in storage and will see me in court.

BELIEVE THE BAD REVIEWS! I didn’t and regret it. We went with them because they were lower than Mayflower. They ended up costing almost $ 1000 more, charged of course after everything was packed on the truck! They broke so many things — I have pictures of boxes with FRAGILE on them stacked below 7 other boxes! They moved the drop off date and blamed me, so I had to scramble to get someone there to unload. They even stuck me with someone else’s table! I would give NO stars if I could. Absolutely horrible.

On my first review dated 6 mos. ago, i stated that i was frustrated w/​the movers customer service, then just today i received a call from them and said that they completely restructured their system and is now under new management. I really appreciate the courtesy call and they apologize of what happened 6 mos. ago. I hope that the new management will do good and j know they will than the previous management. DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID! If you are moving long-​distance, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I get the impression, from reading about other people’s experiences, that civic does a fairly decent job with local moves, it’s the long distance moves where I see everyone is getting screwed. If I can save even just one person from the absolute HELL I went through, then writing this review was completely worth it. I moved across the country, from west to east coast, and I was attracted to civic van lines because the «quote» they gave us was so affordable. Complete bait and switch. They gave us a low quote over the phone, and once every single one of our belongings was boxed up in the moving van, DOUBLED the price. Not to mention, the movers were 3 hours late, took over 7 hours to pack up our 2 bedroom apartment, left stuff in cupboards and on shelves, and broke/​damaged BOTH items, and the interior of my former apartment. If that wasn’t bad enough, our stuff arrived almost 2 MONTHS late, and every time we called to find out what was going on, we got the run-​around. No one was ever helpful or honest, more like rude and unprofessional. I honestly believed we were never going to see our belongings again, and after living over a month in our new apartment with NOTHING, I started buying new stuff. We have a young child, it’s not like we could just go without certain things. Finally our stuff arrived, and the movers who dropped our stuff off (who really had nothing to do with civic whatsoever) were the only redeeming part of this whole process. And I would like to add, that I would have probably been upset that I had started buying all new things, except for the fact that when we began unpacking, most of our stuff was either broken or missing. We’ve accounted for entire boxes of things that just never even showed up. Honestly, it was the most stressful, hellish move I’ve ever been through. The kicker is it probably would’ve been cheaper, after the doubled quote/​damaged property, to have not moved anything at all, and just have bought all new stuff when we arrived east. The level of unprofessionalism is unbelievable. This company is a bunch of SCAM ARTISTS and CRIMINALS. DO NOT USE THEM IF YOU MOVE LONG DISTANCE, you may never see you belongings again!

Valarie in customer service was great. However, the movers were another situation. they broke several pieces of furniture and I was told to file a claim with Anthem. Its been over 60 days since we filed the claim. No word from the insurance company and Civic Van Lines refers us back to the insurance company. I need to replace my broken dining room table glass and unfortunately I get no response from either company. I would not recommend this moving company.

Wow– I feel bad for the last review. I had the complete opposite experience, thankfully!
My friend and I were getting ready to move, conveniently when everyone and their mom were moving too — rental trucks were becoming sparse and to be honest, I wasn’t too jazzed up about begging my friends to help us move… post college gal — I am just OVER moving in general even when a lot of booze is involved. ha!
I got onto
, entered my information and then all of a sudden, a ton of moving ppl started calling me to get my biz. I realized that hiring movers in the short notice, the day we needed out, and the price– it was not going to be do able for us… and I am talking like 375 – 400 for 2 guys and a truck for 3 hours… Wowzass! After our rude awakening of the price, we were looking at Uhaul for our move and then all of a sudden… Civic Van Lines call — Valerie — what a dollface… talks to me and gives me an unbeatable rate. $ 207 for 2 guys for 3 hours. She was so sweet on the phone, I went ahead and locked it in– I was satisfied with the work!
The guys got to our pad, turned into robots and was getting everything loaded… mind you, we clocked it so that we had them for 3 hours exactly. The cutoff was nearing so my friend and I popped in and started helping bringing stuff out to their truck so we could speed up the process without going over the 3 hour limit… boom locked and loaded.
We did run 15 minutes over our time, but we unloaded their truck all together so fast. They brought everything — including 4 complimentary wardrobe boxes for our easy transport. They also brought blankets, tape, saran wrap and delicately wrapped all of our furniture. Our dresers etc were left un-​knicked.
One little hiccup I was not aware of was the drive time — we made a 15 minute drive to our new place — per California, it doubles to 30 minutes. weird but whatever, laws are laws. I made sure I asked for certain the price that was quoted was the price that we would pay so long as we did not go over the 3 hours — everything included, gas, insurance for the guys, etc… Valerie said, yes. So with the 15 minutes going over, we were clocked at 3.75 hours with drive time. I didnt like that surprise but whatever. Besides that little $$ hiccup, I am very satisfied with the work done and actually my coworker also moved the same weekend and used them too. He said they did a good job. I would hire them again! Movers are the way to go – esp with big furniture. it is not worth scratching your expensive shit to save a buck. Spend the money on Civic Van Lines — your ishhh will stay in mint condition! And! You can’t beat the price ! Thank you Valerie and Alfredooooo!

I hired Civic to move from CA to UT. In my opinion, this company should be banned from doing business anywhere. The price quote at first was good, starting @ about $ 950, then the price kept going up. On the day the packers actually showed up (they came a day late), the cost went up to about $ 1800, & I was told that if I didn’t agree, then they would leave my stuff. The problem was that I had to be out of my place that same day & Civic knew that, so I didn’t have a option. When the moving van finally arrived in UT (they were again late) the cost went up once more to about $ 2300 (which was higher than any other quote from other movers). There was all kinds of damage to my property, including the top of my TV entertainment center completely smashed in & a shelf missing. The left support leg of my computer stand, along w/​the whole upper back section is broken & not useable. The computer printer ruined & they used my clothes to use for packing, so ink went all over my clothes, even though they CHARGED me for boxes & packing material. They bent my folding table & camera tri-​pod stand (not repairable) & a whole bunch of stuff missing. So be aware if you’re going to move, stay away from Civic Vanlines! If you’ve used Civic & experienced a similar bad experience, join me in filing a complaint w/​the CA state Attorney General’s Office, so they can conduct a formal investigation into their deceitful practices.

I usually Unilocal any & every company before considering spending my money… Why didn’t I do that last month when I made the MISTAKE of using civic van lines to move me? I guess b/​c I spoke to a few other companies & reviewed them & THOUGHT I did but there’s is no way I would’ve used this company had I seen this! So anyway, my story is the same, the girl Danielle who I 1^st spoke to to book my appointment was extremely nice & quoted me a price & I kept asking was there any additional «hidden fees». She assured me that they don’t do they’re customers like that but when moving day came OMG I got ROBBED & charged for all types of stuff! They were supposed to refund me for all the stuff they added on, a month of waiting & calling them every other day, I finally get a PARTIAL REFUND of the amount discussed! I’m so upset & tired of dealing with these folks. I just filed a dispute with my credit card company. Moving is stressful enuff, save yourself a few grey hairs & STAY AWAY FROM CIVIC VAN LINES!!!

I had a great experience with these guys. I was initially hesitant given some of the questionable reviews, but I asked about them and the representatives answered all my questions professionally. They offered a rate that was unbeatable and were very prompt in their correspondences.
The movers, Mike and Henry came on time and didn’t start the clock until I signed all the papers, which explained the entire process. Henry looked at everything prior to starting and gave me an estimate on how long he thought it would all take and they stayed true to the quote provided online. They were great troubleshooters and made a great team.
They even arrived to the destination before I did. My vote’s for Mike and Henry when it comes to movers and Civic Van Lines overall.

My earliest delivery date was ⁶⁄₁₄. I called them on ⁶⁄₂₀ to find out if my items had been released from storage and shipped. They couldn’t confirm anything and said they would contact me once my items had shipped. I called back on ⁶⁄₂₂ and they couldn’t even tell me if the items had been released from storage. I was told to call back on ⁶⁄₂₃. I called back on ⁶⁄₂₃ and again, the dispatcher couldn’t tell me where my items were– if they were in storage, shipped, nothing. She said she would call me back in 20 minutes with more info. She never called back. Three to four hours later I called her back and she still didn’t have any additional information. She told me to call back (again) on ⁶⁄₂₄. I told her that was unacceptable. She put me on hold and found out that my items were out of storage and waiting to be shipped. They were unable to tell me when my items would leave the state to start the 3000 mile trek, let alone when they would be delivered. I understand that there may be delays or unforeseen circumstances, but not knowing where my whole 2 bedroom apartment worth of stuff is, is unacceptable. Moving is stressful enough. I would like to believe that the company I am dealing with is competent and would like to have some peace of mind that my items will arrive as quickly as possible.

BEWARE. This company is not what you think! They quote you a low price then once they have your items loaded they recalculate and tell you that it’s going to be more. I went with them becasue they had a special. I have a one bedroom apartment and was given a price based on that. Once they loaded my items they then told me that I went over the allowed weight and it would cost me 2 ½ times more. When I told them I wanted my things back they said it would cost me $ 1000 to return it. That was just the beginning. It was a total nightmare having my things delivered. I was told one date then the driver got sick and they rescheduled me. I had set it up that they brought my things in something other then a 18 wheeler since the complex I was moving into didn’t allow large trucks. I was told that I would have to wait another 7 – 14 days to have my furniture delivered because they didn’t have a truck availible or I could pay more money to have it transferred to another truck even though it was their employee that got sick. Then they got another company to deliver my stuff and they didn’t even deliver it when they said they would. The whole experience was so stressful and the company didn’t care at all.

Civic van lines were very helpful, any questions or anything I had I recieved the right information and help. My needs were met and the price was very affordable, I would recommend them to anyone who asks for a great moving company.

Do NOT use this company! Complete bait and switch. Offer low moving quote and doubled the price once half our stuff was in the truck. Movers said move would take 4 – 5 hours and 9 hours later they were finishing. Forman marks everything as mechanical condition unknown for all electronics and all furniture is marked with scratched scuffed scraped and torn to ensure you can not collect on any damages acquired throughout the move. All furniture was torn or damaged upon arrival! Sell everything and buy new instead of using this company!

Boy, i was really nervous at first, but they were absolutely great in every way.
I rarely write reviews, only when i’m really happy or really dissapointed, needless to say in this case i was extra Happy! :)
