History

Established in 1996.

The Nichols brothers opened their first restaurant at the Storybook Inn of Solvang, July 3, 1996. They quickly outgrew their space there and relocated to the famed Mattei’s Tavern in Los Olivos, California. They spent ten years perfecting their dinner craft and building up a loyal following of guests both from Southern California and around the country. Their recipes became so popular they decided to publish a cookbook in December of 2010. Upon their ten year lease ending at Mattei’s Tavern, they took up a new project. A small, casual, American crafted and inspired restaurant serving all your favorite comfort foods. The building was originally built in 1901 and was a hardware and shoe store. The brothers pulled from the original name of the building and named their latest venture, Sides Hardware and Shoes — A Brothers Restaurant.

Meet the Manager

Michael Cherney.

Manager

Michael was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and graduated from The Art Institute with a Bachelors Degree in Culinary Management. He worked his way through the brigade system at Ortolan Restaurant in Los Angeles where he trained under Chef Christophe Eme. In 2009, Michael moved to Las Vegas to work under «Chef of the Century» Joel Robuchon at his L’Atelier restaurant in the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. After leaving L’Atelier, Michael wanted to connect with the ingredients in a different way. He joined a program called WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) and lived on a 40 acre organic, sustainable farm in northern California. This gave Michael the passion he has today for sourcing his ingredients from local farmers and using the highest quality products available. Michael joined the Brothers team shortly after the opening of Sides Hardware and Shoes and has continued to spread his wealth of knowledge and passion ever since.
